“Diversity” is undoubtedly a buzzword in Hollywood, but the inclusion of people with disabilities behind and in front of the camera remains an overlooked topic in the industry.
At Variety‘s inaugural Inclusion Gathering, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation at West Hollywood’s London Hotel on Nov. 2, industry creatives and executives gathered for breakfast and a series of conversations centered around the topic of disabilities and inclusion in Hollywood.
The first conversation, “Disabilities in Storytelling,” was moderated by Tim Gray, executive vice president, Golden Globes, and featured Ashley Eakin, director of Disney’s “Growing Up” and Apple TV+’s “Best Foot Forward”; Angela Kang, showrunner and executive producer of “The Walking Dead”; David Renaud, co-executive producer of “The Good Doctor”; Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, executive producer, creator and showrunner of “The Witcher”; and Kaitlynn Yang, CEO, visual effects supervisor on “American Born Chinese.”

Deaf representation has come a long way in Hollywood.
“Coda’s” release and subsequent best picture Oscar win marked an important moment for deaf audiences. It showed the most significant representation of the community on a global stage since 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” earned Marlee Matlin a best actress prize.
“Hollywood is making that shift from diversity for optics to something deeper,” says Lauren Ridloff, a deaf actor best known for her work on “Eternals” and “The Walking Dead.”
That deeper shift includes recent projects where deaf representation has been the focus of major storylines. Director James Cameron called on C.J Jones to create Na’vi sign language, featured in “Avatar: The Way of Water.” HBO’s “The Last of Us” offered up another landmark moment when the show about a post-apocalyptic world featured Keivonn Woodard, as a young deaf Black man trying to survive zombie hordes. Following the groundbreaking release of “Avatar” in 2009, James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise about a humanoid species called the Na’vi is finally back with the first of several sequels. After a 13-year gap, the saga will pick up with “Avatar: The Way of Water” in December before continuing on with what are currently being dubbed “Avatar 3”, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” in 2024, 2026 and 2028, respectively.
Stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and others look back on the original while teasing what’s to come as “The Way of Water” picks up on their story over a decade later.
“It’s been about 10 years,” Weaver tells Et of the time she’s committed to the franchise since starring in the first one. “And then, in the meantime, Jim Cameron has written four amazing stories about what is now a family, the Sully family. And so, the stakes are higher. There are more amazing characters.

The casting of performers with disabilities should be part of Hollywood’s ongoing efforts to be more inclusive, but it’s often not, even though the Americans with Disability Act of 1990 makes it just as illegal to discriminate against the disabled as it is any other protected group.
“Disability is consistently overlooked in the conversation about diversity and inclusion,” said Anita Hollander, national chair of SAG-AFTRA’s Performers with Disabilities Committee, who hosted the union’s panel Thursday on disability inclusion in Hollywood. The discussion was part of the guild’s Stop the Hate summit.
“There are just too few opportunities for performers with disabilities,” said Camryn Manheim, SAG-AFTRA’s national secretary-treasurer, in her opening remarks. “In fact, people with disabilities make up less than 3.5% of all onscreen characters. And when we do see characters with disabilities, they are often played by non-disabled actors. It’s a fact, the number...

As Hollywood continues its ongoing fight for increased diversity and representation across the industry, disability is rarely included.
Entrepreneur and disability activist Keely Cat-Wells is teaming up with major Hollywood figures to urge movie studios to hire a permanent disability officer. Amy Poehler and Naomie Harris are among over 80 names who have signed an open letter being sent across Hollywood on Wednesday.
“If you show the injustice of the system and say, ‘Look, here’s a way forward,’ it makes it more difficult for people to ignore,” says “James Bond” star Harris in support of the letter.
Cat-Wells is the founder of the Los Angeles-based talent agency, C Talent, which represents d/Deaf and disabled artists and athletes globally.

RespectAbility will have a heavy presence at Sundance this year, with a lineup of virtual panels and discussions, all on digital Main Street.
The disability advocacy group is presenting five conversations under the umbrella title the Accessibility & Inclusion Lab; two of the events are in collaboration with Film Independent.
A goal is to encourage authentic representation of disabled people on screen, and to help change how audiences view people with disabilities. Another goal is to give filmmakers the tools to make films more accessible, both for disabled crew members and for audiences.
According to Nielsen, the disability market influences more than a trillion dollars in disposable income. However, with one-in-five people in the U.S. having a disability, there is a startling lack of representation – just 2.3% of characters in the 100 top-grossing films of 2019 and 8% in family films.

Amazon’s “Sound of Metal” is a piece of terrific filmmaking — and its achievements are even more impressive considering Hollywood’s depictions of deafness in the past.
“Sound of Metal,” directed by Darius Marder, stars Riz Ahmed as a heavy-metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing. The film has a three-act structure: Attempts by drummer Ruben to cope; his time spent in a deaf community; and his attempts to re-create his life as it was before the hearing loss.
The heart of the film is the middle segment, when community leader Joe (the excellent Paul Raci) tells Ruben that deafness “is not something to fix” and his assignment is simple: “Learn how to be deaf.”
Director Marder tells Variety, “This film is a wake-up. Most people think of deafness as a physical disability. We don’t understand that it is in fact a culture.”

James Cameron is nothing if not meticulous in putting his movies together, which has been a major source of frustration for both the fans that would love to see the filmmaker churn them out on a more regular basis, not to mention the studio who inevitably brace themselves for his latest project to arrive years behind schedule.
Incredibly, Avatar 2 has finished principal photography, and with the post-production process in full swing now, there’s a chance that the sci-fi sequel might actually be completed in time to hit theaters in December 2022 after already being delayed seven times since it was first announced for 2014. Given how long he’s spent immersed in the world of Pandora already, eight years late isn’t too bad all things considered.

I quite like the title Door In The Woods and the images it conjures up. In my head I had some kind of weird horror version of Monsters Inc. There are endless possibilities, and while this film does, kind of, attempt some of these on a low budget, it maybe doesn’t have quite enough ambition.

I quite like the title Door In The Woods and the images it conjures up. In my head I had some kind of weird horror version of Monsters Inc. Art can provoke feeling, but its impact has limitations in the face of legal and systemic oppression, said Riz Ahmed, the activist and actor known for “The Oa,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Night Of,” onstage at the CAA Amplify conference in Ojai on Tuesday, calling for the high-powered industry execs, talent, Wall Streeters and politicos in the room to act on reducing Islamophobic sentiment in the media.
“The efforts of individual artists or storytellers may be bold, they may be progressive, they may act as beacons of hope for other people, but in the face of institutional prejudice and institutionalized obstacles, systemic obstacles, our efforts can sometime still fall flat,” he told the audience, a group that included Obama-era senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, “Patriot Act” creator Hasan Minhaj, playwright Young Jean Lee, Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson, and “Just Mercy” stars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx.

Cj Jones was born with the ability to hear but due to spinal meningitis, he became deaf and his first language was American sign language. With support from his parents and perseverance to go against the naysayers, he performed a one-man show, became a stand-up comedian and made his way to the big screen with a role in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver (which he receivd out of over a thousand non-deaf actors) and the forthcoming Avatar sequel.
Since then, he has become an advocate for the inclusion of the disabled community in film and TV, a marginalized community that has been underrepresented and underserved in Hollywood. He has done that by leading by example. He said that his inability to hear is a medical model and that it’s about “looking at an individual with their gifts and them telling a story they haven’t seen before.”

Amy Hopper’s “Parents Inc.” took honors for best film at the sixth annual Easterseals Disability Film Challenge Thursday night, in ceremonies held at the Sony Pictures lot.
Other winners were Carl Hansen, director for “I/O”; Nicole Evans, best actor for “Human Helper”; and “The Vanished,” which took home the awareness award, accepted by Melanie Waldman.
The program was hosted by Nic Novicki, who founded the Film Challenge to empower filmmakers (with or without disabilities) to tell unique stories while providing opportunities for inclusion and representation for people with disabilities (or Pwd). Novicki reminded the enthusiastic audience that Pwd represent about 20% of the population, but only account for 3% of onscreen depictions.
Participating teams had 55 hours to write, shoot and edit a three-to-five-minute short based on an assigned genre. This year, the genre was sci-fi. Their productions were created on the weekend of April 5-7, with more than 200 people with...

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the Sept. 5 episode of “Castle Rock.”)
Throughout the first season of Hulu’s Stephen King-inspired series “Castle Rock,” fans have been wondering what the deal is with the character known only as “The Kid.” In Episode 9, “Henry Deaver,” we finally found out — along with the show pretty much explaining all its mysteries.
That doesn’t mean the explanation was extremely clear, even if it was well-executed. In Episode 9, “Castle Rock” shook up everything, rewrote its timeline, and gave viewers a ton of information about The Kid (Bill Skarsgård). You’d be forgiven for not fully understanding what you were seeing, since it completely re-contextualized everything viewers knew about “Castle Rock.”

So, I’ve been hearing about ‘Baby Driver‘ for awhile, and despite all the praise it was getting; I had this sickening thought that couldn’t leave me that seem to force me to remain skeptical. I didn’t realize how skeptical I should’ve been until I started watching it though. This movie basically starts the same way that ‘Drive’ began, and it’s, basically the same story, just filtered through writer/director Edgar Wright. Yeah, Wright is the main reason I remained skeptical; in just a short time he’s developed a huge fanbase, and the guy is talented. He made ‘Hot Fuzz’ which remains one of the funniest comedies I’ve seen this decade, one that I’ve gone back to several times over. That was my first movie of his, but most people were familiar with him through ‘Shaun of the Dead‘ originally, the first of...

Sweet Christmas, everyone – this year’s Awesome Con was busy as all get-out and chock-full of cool things to see and do, and con season is rushing by so fast that I’m just now getting to my recap! (We can also blame the con crud for this, alas. It’s been following me around for a solid month.) As always, there were way more activities than one mere mortal could get to. And on top of that, this was the first year where I really saw multiple events surrounding the con that were either not directly affiliated with the con but inspired by it, or connected to it but not part of the main con experience.
So let’s start there. First off, I was part of a pre-con round-table interview Awesome Con set up with the inestimable Stan Lee. Stan answered many great questions. He talked about what...

A young getaway driver’s playlist helps him stay in the fast lane in Edgar Wright’s exhilarating car-chase thriller musical
After wisely walking away from the car crash of Marvel’s 2015 film Ant-Man, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright is back in the fast lane with his most thrillingly cinematic romp. A romantic musical disguised as a car-chase thriller, Baby Driver combines the over-cranked action fantasies of Hot Fuzz with the poptastic sensibilities of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. At its centre is Ansel Elgort’s eponymous getaway driver, who uses earphones to drown out the “hum-in-the-drum” of tinnitus (the result of a childhood accident) and orchestrates his life to carefully chosen iPod playlists. Whether he’s burning rubber or fixing a peanut butter sandwich (“right up to the edges”), this former joyrider spins his wheels and records with the same infectious exuberance. Think An American in Paris meets The French Connection,...

You know an Edgar Wright film when you see one. From his signature directorial style to his pop culture heavy writing, he does something truly unique. It’s not a stretch to say that there’s no one else in the industry quite like him. This week, Wright unleashes Baby Driver, which is in equal measure both very much like what’s come before for him and very much something new. Wright is embracing genre in a way that he has never really done before. I saw the film last week and liked it quite a bit, though it’s a flick that I think is a bit overpraised, if we’re being honest. More below. The movie is an action packed one, chock full of music. Young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) sets everything in his life to music, even the heists he pulls off for Doc (Kevin Spacey...

Now this is what I call a summer movie. Baby Driver has it all: thrills, laughs, sex, nonstop action, a killer soundtrack, a star-making performance from Ansel Elgort and a director – Edgar Wright – who can knock the wind out of you. When was the last time to got pumped by a car chase? This revved-up ride of a movie is loaded with them, and they're spectacular.
Ok, let's back up and get our bearings. Elgort, the teen dream of The Fault in Our Stars, plays Baby, an Atlanta getaway driver with chronic tinnitus.

Writer/Director Edgar Wright is known for his unique films that both satarize and embrace whatever genre he chooses. We're talking Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and The World's End. Wright's dialogue is always poetic with the sharpest wit and most clever word-plays. His editing style is unmistakable, fast and in your face, smashing one scene seamlessly into another. His shots are colorful, with just as much to say as the dialogue that accompanies them. His action scenes are sincere, brutal, and among the best out there; it's a wonder that Wright hasn't been handed a giant action franchise on a scale even bigger than Baby Driver (Though we guess Ant-Man would have been that film, had he stayed on). Wright's actors are always top notch, selected with care and directed to perfection. All four of his previous releases are winners for these reasons,...

This sweltering evening in London town saw the return of one of the brightest stars in the cinematic sky. Director Edgar Wright brought his latest film to the capital and we were there to meet him and the cast on the red carpet of Baby Driver.
The new film from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz man Edgar Wright stars Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, Cj Jones, Jon Bernthal, Lanny Joon, and Paul Williams which is a ridiculously good cast. “He’s a good kid, and a devil behind the wheel.”
That’s Baby (Ansel Elgort), an innocent-looking getaway driver who gets hardened criminals from point A to point B, with daredevil flair and a personal soundtrack running through his head. That’s because he’s got his escape route plotted to the beat of specific tunes that go from his well-curated iPod straight to his ears, and which translate into expertly timed hairpin turns, gear shifts and evasive maneuvers that leave his passengers on the ride of their lives.
Which makes Baby Driver, with its mixture of mph and music, the newest explosion of genre-crossing excitement from writer-director Edgar Wright, an action thriller unlike any other.

To achieve success (no matter your profession), one must stand out from the crowd. No filmmaker understands this better than Edgar Wright. His movies take on this life of their own, defined by calculated ingenuity. A booze soaked sci-fi invasion? Easy. A satirical zombie homage? Try overnight classic. Wright doesn’t just play in a sandbox, he creates living, breathing worlds out of lines in the sand – but even for Mr. Wright, Baby Diver boasts ambition at irreplicable volumes.
Ansel Elgort leads Wright’s action-comedy-heist as Baby, a getaway driver who suffers from tinnitus (a ringing noise only Baby can hear). This leads to constant iPod usage that keeps him focused (distracted), which Wright cues every single movement in Baby Driver to. Yes, you read correctly. We watch Baby Driver from Elgort’s perspective, where actions are fluidly choreographed to whatever track he’s currently blasting. Gunshots match with bass drum beats.

Like every Edgar Wright movie since “Shaun of the Dead,” the director’s fifth feature, “Baby Driver,” takes a ludicrous concept and turns it into a brilliant exercise in high style and a rush of big ideas. The director’s most ambitious work to date is a wildly successful romantic heist comedy, propelled from scene to scene with a lively soundtrack that elevates its slick chase scenes into a realm that develops its own satisfying beat.
If Busby Berkeley made “Grand Theft Auto,” it might look something like this exuberant comic caper, in which young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) speeds through highways and back alleys seemingly impervious to police advances so long as he has a smooth beat to guide his maneuvers. Operating under the employ of robbery maestro Doc (a stern Kevin Spacey), Baby quietly works off a debt to his boss by hauling two-bit criminals out of harm’s way,...
