Exclusive: In Playing Nice James Norton stars as Pete, a doting dad who finds out his son was switched at birth, giving him a different kind of hero to portray. “He’s a kind of small hero,” Norton told Deadline. “Unlike most of the characters I’ve played, he’s very likable, very amenable and recognizable. There’s a simplicity to him, which I hadn’t really played before, and a likability and quietness that made him feel very real.”
The adaptation of the Jp Delaney novel is produced by Studiocanal and Rabbit Track Pictures, the indie Norton set up with Kitty Kaletsky in 2019. It will bow on ITV in the UK and play on Canal+ in France. Studiocanal is handling international sales and will launch the series internationally this week in Cannes at MIPTV.

Steven Knight To Adapt Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ In Reteam With BBC/FX, Ridley Scott & Tom Hardy
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is reteaming with his Taboo and A Christmas Carol collaborators on a new adaptation of Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Knight will write and executive produce the six-part BBC One/FX limited series that is also exec produced by Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy, Dean Baker, David W Zucker and Kate Crowe.

Dickens first released it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860 before it was subsequently published as a novel. Previous filmed iterations have included a 2012 feature from Mike Newell and a BBC/PBS series in 2011.
Knight is an avowed Dickens fan who told me a couple years back that part of what sets Peaky Blinders apart from other period drama owes something to the author. At the time, he said, “If one were to hope to aspire to do what Dickens...

A panel of British TV professionals struck a hopeful note on Thursday at the Mia Market in Rome, as they tried to assess the potential fallout of Britain’s impending exit from the E.U. on the booming U.K. TV biz.
“There will be problems…but I think a far bigger force, actually, is the desire to continue to collaborate, and actually collaborate much more with European producers,” said Martin Haines, COO of Kudos. “The impulses of Brexit…are just not in tune with what audiences want. The creative opportunity and the commercial imperative will just wash it away.”
Haines appeared on a panel, “Focus on U.K. TV,” that included Kate Crowe, head of TV at Scott Free London; David O’Donoghue, co-managing director of Carnival Films; Daisy Goodwin, creator of ITV and PBS Masterpiece series “Victoria”; Alex Marshall, COO of Archery Pictures; and Steve November, creative director of Lionsgate TV U.

Tom Hardy is on the move right now, and since FX‘s Taboo is currently set to “probably” air in 2017, it’s a good idea to burn the show into people’s brains while we’re all hot for Hardy.
The show looks for all the world like the cinematic offspring of the combined well of recent “dark and creepy” efforts, and that’s at least partially because it has production/cast ties with Peaky Blinders.
Hardy will have a lot resting on his shoulders with this effort, as the short-run series apparently focuses heavily on his character. Hardy plays a presumed-dead son who reappears when his father dies, but most people might not want what he manages to inherit, which is largely a lot of people trying to kill him.
It’s hard to make a call based on a trailer alone, despite the inherent irony of that statement,...
