Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Exclusive: Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects) have landed the lead roles in the BBC’s upcoming crime drama series Dope Girls, we can reveal.
Umi Myers, Eilidh Fisher and Geraldine James have also landed major parts in the series, which we first told you about back in March. At the time, our sources said the BBC sees Dope Girls as a spiritual successor to Peaky Blinders, which ended last year.
Filming on the show, which is set in London’s Soho in the early 20th century, when female gangs ran the clubs, drugs and moonshine, is now underway. It will launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and comes from Polly Stenham and Alex Warren (Eleanor).

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Afire (Christian Petzold)
Writing recently about the introduction of video umpires in baseball, of all things, Zach Helfand was skeptical: “accuracy is not the same as enjoyment,” he wrote, “baseball is meant to kill time, not maximize it.” The best films of German director Christian Petzold do both, though you sense his heart might belong to the latter. Petzold’s latest, Afire, unfurls with all the page-turning seduction of a gripping novella. It stars Thomas Schubert as a struggling writer who travels with a friend to a secluded house near the Baltic Sea. Their car breaks down. They encounter a beautiful woman. Somewhere in the distance, a forest fire rages. Soon, inevitably, another burns inside. – Rory O. (full review)

Nida Manzoor’s fizzing comedy joins cinema’s long procession of disrupted nuptials, from The Philadelphia Story to Muppets Most Wanted
I blame the movies for the tense, wilful shiver I feel at every wedding ceremony I’ve ever attended – when the priest or officiator opens the floor for objections, and a few seconds of awkward, semi-amused silence ensues. What a chaotic thrill it must be to speak up in that moment! I never would, of course, and have never seen anyone else do so. But in cinema, nuptials are made to be sabotaged as often as not, and by forces more malicious than the tepid British summer. The “stop the wedding!” film is virtually its own subgenre. Nida Manzoor’s fizzy, raucous comedy Polite Society is a pleasingly unusual addition to its ranks.
The wedding targeted in Manzoor’s film isn’t a victim of romantic discord or envy.

Top global talent paid homage to director Martin Campbell and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould at the second London Action Festival, which concluded Sunday.
The duo, who were honored with the festival’s Moving Target Award for their outstanding contribution to action cinema, were surprised with a range of video messages from people who had worked with them.
Daniel Craig described Campbell and Corbould as “two people who have had a major influence on my career.” On Campbell, Craig said: “It gave me incredible security knowing you were steering the ship [Casino Royale]. I have so much to thank you for. I’m incredibly proud of the film we made together.” On Corbould, Craig added: “I don’t know what to say. You’ve blown me up, you’ve set me on fire – but what has been so incredible in working with you is to have had the privilege of getting inside your imagination.

The much-anticipated three-part event “The Continental: The World of John Wick,” will arrive on Peacock in September. The three-part miniseries explores the origin of the hotel-for-assassins that serves as one of the main settings for the iconic action series and how a young Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) was dragged into a hellish 1970s New York and forced to confront a past he’d rather forget. This week’s streaming premieres bring a Bollywood-inspired action romp, a moving mother-son drama, and an important battle to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, and now you — I mean, uh, your kids — can watch it over and over again. But first, check out a Sundance indie that will have you hooting and hollering.
This week’s contender to watch: “Polite Society”
After a promising Sundance premiere, “Polite Society” opened to strong reviews and decent grosses for an indie without many well-known names. It’s part wedding comedy, part Tarantino, part “Kung Fu Hustle,” and part “Ocean’s Eleven.” Priya Kansara, best known as Miss Eaton on “Bridgerton,” stars as an aspiring martial-arts stuntwoman who will gladly break out the kung fu if it means stopping her sister (Rita Arya of “The Umbrella Academy”) from going through with her ill-advised marriage. “Polite Society,...

Chez Jolie Coiffure (Rosine Mbakam)
A vérité vignette of a small, expat-owned hair salon in Brussels’ African Quarter. Giving Birth to a Butterfly (Theodore Schaefer)
We meet Diana Dent (Annie Parisse) readying matching wedding gowns soon revealed as not her own. She’s mending them to sell online—a necessity considering her bull-headed and controlling husband Daryl (Paul Sparks) is hell-bent on putting their life savings towards a dream of creating his own restaurant. That means no money for Drew (Owen Campbell) or Danielle’s (Rachel Resheff) college.

Fans got their first look at Ritu Arya in the "Barbie" movie on April 4, when almost every cast member was featured on their own "This Barbie" post in the trailer showing off their character. Arya's reads, "This Barbie has a Pulitzer." Speaking to Popsugar about her new movie "Polite Society," Arya jokes that in real life, her poster would read, "This Barbie is figuring this sh*t out."
"Margot was awesome. So had just a lovely time while I was there."
Arya admits she had a bit of "massive imposter syndrome" being part of the star-studded "Barbie" cast - which includes Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling - but it was an "incredible" experience, she explains. "They were all so lovely. It was just very surreal." Director Greta Gerwig, Ayra says, created a "beautiful atmosphere" for the film that was "collaborative and playful." Priya Kansara didn't pursue a career in acting sooner because of a lack of representation. The 'Polite Society' star - who plays Ria, a young woman dreaming of becoming a stunt performer, in the new heist action comedy - didn't think she would have the opportunity to appear in movies as she didn't see herself represented on screen. She told Collider 'Ladies Night Pre-Party': "I didn't see people that looked like me on screen or in this space. I don't think I thought it was accessible to me.”However, she noticed a chance as she got older, which pushed her to chase her dreams. She added: "When I was studying through university, during those years of my life, I started to see how the industry was starting to open its doors more."And also kind of instilling that discipline in me about, ‘No, I love this, and this...

How ‘Polite Society’ Created an Exhilarating Blend of Action from ‘The Matrix,’ Eunice Huthart, More
From the Bruce Lee poster on her wall to the spinning kick by real-life stuntwoman Eunice Huthart she spends hours trying to perfect, aspiring stuntwoman Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) lives and breathes action cinema. So did the team making “Polite Society,” which draws stylistically on everything from the heightened wirework action of “The Matrix” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” to the gleefully destructive chaos of “Kill Bill,” and actual, real-world karate bouts.
There’s a wonderful differentiation to the fights, which all feel as targeted and emotionally distinct as the songs in a musical: Ria slowly gets more confident, the stakes behind her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) marrying a too-perfect doctor Salim (Akshay Khanna) and acquiring a domineering mother-in-law Raheela (Nimra Bucha) get higher — and Ria’s schemes to stop the marriage get more bonkers.

It’s refreshing stepping into a film with no expectations. That was my experience with a fun and fanciful action comedy called Polite Society. Written and directed by Nida Manzoor, the film takes a wild direction with the idea of an arranged marriage in a modern era. Telling the story of two sisters, one of whom falls madly in love with a dashing and wealthy stranger. Her sister is terrified that the man and his mother have insidious plans for her sibling. The comedy works, as does the action, and the films stars, Priya Kansara and Ritu Arya are terrific together.
Before the film’s release, I sat down with both Priya Kansara and Ritu Arya to talk about their latest. The two were a joy to speak with, and it was nice to hear how they became involved with this original and entertaining feature. They opened up about playing sisters,...

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Polite Society.”]
It took everything I had not to yell out loud during “Polite Society.”
Not because of the intense fight sequences, killer martial arts, or even that twist — what had this reporter out of her seat was a dance sequence that unfolds during the film’s final act. As Ria (Priya Kansara) dances at sister Lena’s (Ritu Arya) wedding, she aims to “distract” the assembled guests while her friends are busy executing a master plan that’s consumed most of the film’s running time. Dressed in an emerald-green outfit, Ria takes the stage, and the opening notes of “Maar Dala” begin to play.
Composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Nusrat Badr, “Maar Dala” first appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film “Devdas,” based on 1917 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel of the same name. In the film, Madhuri Dixit-Nene performs the number (sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and K.K.) as courtesan Chandramukhi,...

Polite Society was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A young woman (Priya Kansara) studying martial arts becomes convinced something nefarious is afoot when her formally rebellious sister (Ritu Arya) agrees to a marriage arranged by her Pakistani family.
Review: Polite Society is rare for Sundance these days – a crowd-pleasing action comedy. Everything Everywhere All At Once proved there’s a hunger for variations on the genre. Polite Society mixes your classic culture-clash coming-of-age tale (shades of Bend it Like Beckham or Blinded by the Light) with the type of light action comedy the directors in Hong Kong used to turn out regularly. Polite Society is a fun-filled actioner for all ages, featuring wire-fu and a whole bunch of fight scenes.
It helps that director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts) brings specificity to Polite Society with her being born into a Pakistani Muslim family while living in London, just like the leads.

Arriving in theaters nationwide Friday, April 28th is Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society (a film that this writer very much enjoyed out of Sundance) courtesy of Focus Features. The film stars Priya Kansara as Ria, a high schooler who dreams of one day becoming a stuntwoman who must put her own unique training to the test when she has to save her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) from marrying Salim (Akshay Khanna), who has his own nefarious reasons for wanting to find a wife.
During the recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak briefly with both Kansara and Arya about their involvement in the project, but the duo discussed what attracted them to their respective roles and how much they enjoyed working on Polite Society as a whole.

Though she’s the only writer credited on it, filmmaker Nida Manzoor had a very special writing partner on her debut feature “Polite Society.” The British-Pakistani creator of “We Are Lady Parts” told IndieWire that she co-wrote her film with her younger self — literally.
“I wrote the script over 10 years ago, and it basically got passed on everywhere,” Manzoor said in a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire. “It wasn’t until the success of ‘Lady Parts’ that it sort of became something viable again — for the first time, actually — and it was weird. I really had so much self-doubt around it, because it had gotten nowhere [because it was] just hard to define.”

We’re just one week away from the official start of the summer movie season, but before that, we have one more weekend of April to knock out a few releases hoping to bring in some business the summer’s bigger releases take over. Not that it matters, because “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will continue its first place run with another $35 to 37 million this weekend, edging its way closer to $500 million. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There are three new wide releases, the strongest of them being Lionsgate’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” based on Judy Blume‘s beloved 1970 young adult bestseller, which helped get many a girl (and a few boys) through puberty. The movie stars Abby Ryder Fortson as the film’s title character, Margaret, as well as Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and Benny Safdie as her family.

A pointed satire of the marriage market from We Are Lady Parts’ Nida Manzoor delivers the laughs – and some full tilt comedy action
Nida Manzoor created We Are Lady Parts for Channel 4, a sitcom about an all-female, all-Muslim punk band; now, for her debut feature film, she brings serious levels of goof, wack and zane for a feelgood action comedy with a very incorrect adjective in the title. It stars newcomer Priya Kansara as a young girl from a British-Pakistani family: Ria, a year 11 martial arts enthusiast and wannabe stuntwoman on a desperate mission to sabotage her older sister’s marriage to a guy that somehow only she can see is a sinister creep.
Kansara does a lot of her own gonzo stunts and kickboxing moves, and the sheer energy and full tilt comedy she brings to them had me thinking of the young Jackie Chan in Drunken Master.

Polite Society is one of the most original and entertaining films released this year, and to mark its April 28 release, we had the pleasure in speaking to the brains behind the project, the writer/director Nide Manzoor, alongside the film’s leading star, Priya Kansara.
We discussed the film’s unique and original elements, while asking Manzoor about the casting of her lead, and what made Kansara the perfect Ria. The actress tells us about doing stunts, while the pair talk about their own dreams and aspirations, and whether they, like the characters in the film, ever faced any conflict in their pursuit for a position in the arts. Watch the full interview in its entirety below.

Priya Kansara has her eyes set on her next action film co-star.
The “Polite Society” star plays the Ria Khan in the action film, a protective sister who shows off plenty of her martial arts while she tries to save her sister from her impending nuptials.
While teasing the intense action in the film, Kansara also shared some actors she would love to kick butt alongside in future projects.
“Oh, my gosh. Michelle Yeoh. I love her. I would love to work with her. She is the O.G.,” she gushed over the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star when asked about her top 3 action stars. “And I feel like you also can’t do action without being like Keanu Reeves and like Tom Cruise because you just can’t. It’s not allowed.”

This British action comedy is a nuptials-based kung fu homage. Leads Priya Kansara and Ritu Arya discuss auditions, stereotypes – and being the next Tom Cruise
A few years ago, Priya Kansara was working in an ordinary office communications job for a healthcare pharmaceutical company. Now she’s fulfilling her childhood dream of being a leading actor, scaling buildings, learning jiu-jitsu and doing backflips in her latest film, Polite Society. With no previous stunt experience, Kansara describes the process as “jumping into the deep end”.
“The shooting schedule was so intense,” she says, recalling the third and final shot of one particular Friday evening. With 15 minutes left of the week’s filming, she was put in a harness and tasked with performing a major stunt. She remembers how worried everyone was on set that they wouldn’t get the shot in on time to enjoy a “stress-free weekend”. But, thankfully, Kansara executed the move flawlessly.

A devil-may-care approach in terms of plotting meets a careful attention to crafting detail in this riotous debut from Nida Manzoor. It’s a coming-of-age film with kick-ass moves and a spirit so punk-minded it powers past any questions you may have about plausibility.
Teenager Ria lives with her elder sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and her parents (ex-EastEnders regular Shobu Kapoor and Jeff Mirza). Ria spends her days hanging out with her mates Alba (Call The Midwife’s Ella Bruccoleri) and Clara (Seraphina Beh) and dreaming of becoming a stunt woman like her idol Eunice Huthart (a real-life artist who doubled for Angelina in Tomb Raider among other jobs).
Ria and Lena are tight, with the older sibling often being enlisted to shoot some of Ria’s stunt moves - including a particularly tricky spin kick she’s been working on, if only...

For her first feature, We Are Lady Parts creator Nida Manzoor crafts the highly entertaining action/adventure/sci-fi hybrid Polite Society that explores what happens when traditional values and modern sensibilities clash to thrilling effect.
In Polite Society, Priya Kansara plays the strong-willed Ria – a Pakistani high schooler who wants nothing more than to become a stunt woman, a profession that her parents aren’t exactly keen about her pursuing after she graduates. Ria’s older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) is also something of an anti-traditionalist too, as she recently dropped out of art school due creative frustration and has been trying to figure out what’s next. The sisters end up at a hoity-toity party due to their mother Fatima’s (Shobu Kapoor) desire to fit in with all the other moms in their community where Lena is introduced to pretty boy Salim (Akshay Khanna), who is on the hunt for a wife.
