It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.
“Dune” was the big screen event of the season, ushering in the reopening of theaters after the pandemic with its heady mix of politics and religion wrapped around a hero’s journey in the desert. It only came up short in costume design and makeup and hairstyling, where it got overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven’s ’70’s punk look for Emma Stone in “Cruella” (Disney), and the transformation of Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures).

Powerhouse “Dune” (Warner Bros.) took the early lead, grabbing four out of five craft Oscars after the controversial pre-taped ceremony of eight categories an hour before the ABC broadcast at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. They were presented by “Dune” co-stars Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa in an unprecedented move to tighten the show and boost sagging ratings, and will appear in an edited version throughout the broadcast.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” won editing, production design, original score, and sound. However, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures) took makeup/hairstyling for the impressive transformation of Best Actress favorite Jessica Chastain as the infamous televangelist. This follows the recent trend of the category going to biopics that includes “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Bombshell,” “Vice,” and “Darkest Hour.” In a show of support for her Muahs team (makeup artists Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh and hairstylist Stephanie Ingram...

The most shocking snub of the Oscar noms was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.”
The film’s 10-nomination haul includes best picture and adapted screenplay, the latter perceived to be its most difficult to attain. Yet, Villeneuve’s lack of recognition for directing could rally widespread support from Academy voters and result in the film tying or surpassing a 50-year record held by “Cabaret” (1972).
Bob Fosse’s classic adaptation of the Broadway stage musical set a record at the 45th Academy Awards for the most Oscars received without winning best picture. Fosse’s film took eight trophies: for directing, actress (Liza Minnelli), supporting actor (Joel Grey), sound, art direction (now called production design), cinematography, film editing and the now defunct score adaptation and original song score. Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” walked away with three major prizes at the ceremony: picture,...

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

Unlike the stunning CG recreation of Sean Young’s Rachael replicant in “Blade Runner 2049,” the Joi hologram played by Ana de Armas was more of an advanced analog creation. In fact, the directive from Denis Villeneuve was to have Joi alternate between looking realistic and artificial, depending on the emotional context for Ryan Gosling’s K, who customized her as more of a loving companion than pleasure model.
They recorded actress de Armas on set with Gosling from multiple angles with GoPros and Hdri lighting set up by Roger Deakins. Then Double Negative made a CG version and went through a lot of testing. However, finding the right look was difficult.
“Joi is a volume, a projection, and we looked at conventional holograms and didn’t really like them that much,” said John Nelson, the production visual effects supervisor. “We had to come up with something more subtle yet cooler than that.

A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.

Despite Aston Villa’s loss to Arsenal in the Fa Cup final last season, the cup run was at least a welcome change from the upsets that have plagued Villa’s recent history.
An embarrassing exit at the hands of a team from a lower division was an all too regular occurrence under Paul Lambert, with the likes of Bradford City, Milwall, Leyton Orient and Sheffield United booting Villa out of both the Fa and League Cups.
Like Villa, Notts County have struggled in recent years but could use the League Cup as a welcome distraction.
It will be a difficult task for them, though. Sherwood is likely to play a strong squad and will probably use the opportunity to give his newly assembled team more time to gel.

Aston Villa have made a £1 million bid for West Brom defender Joleon Lescott, according to the Daily Mail.
The Birmingham club could be left needing some defensive reinforcements following the departure of Ron Vlaar and recent interest in Nathan Baker from relegated Burnley.
With injury problems ruling Jores Okore out until September Sherwood may feel further options are needed ahead of Villa’s first game of the season.
Lescott has been targeted before by Villa but they were unwilling to meet the ex-Man City defender’s wage demands in the Paul Lambert era.
Prior to a bid for Lescott, Villa ironically turned down a bid from the Baggies for Ireland international defender Ciaran Clark.
In some ways a transfer would make sense for Lescott as the ex-England international is a boyhood Villa fan and joining Villa would give Lescott the chance to link up with former Man City team-mate Micah Richards.

Chicago – Like the recent movie-to-stage-musical adaptations, “The Producers” and “Young Frankenstein,” Chicago has become the proving ground before a Broadway premiere. The latest is almost a no-brainer, “The First Wives Club,” adapted from the 1996 film that starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.
The big news is that the original song writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (Holland-Dozier-Holland) have reunited to write new music for the show, adding to their familiar hits “Stop in the Name of Love,” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” 22 new songs have been added to “The First Wives Club” stage musical, representing the first new output in years from the famous songwriting trio.

Aston Villa are in a slump – a slump that has lasted the bones of four years. It was only half a decade ago that the club were consistently challenging for the European places, recording three sixth-placed finishes in a row under Martin O’Neill. Since then, their assets have been stripped and the supporters have been forced to watch the mind-numbing dirge on display from managers Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Paul Lambert.
The multi-million pound superstars are gone, and in their place are a host of raw, unfurnished youth prospects. What of those who weren’t deemed good enough for the club during their surge towards the upper echelons of the Premier League table? With the club forced to dip into the bargain basement for old-timers and never-beens, such as Joe Cole and Philippe Senderos, suddenly those cast-offs don’t look so unappealing now.

Jack Colback claims that Newcastle are in a false position at the minute, that their 18th place positioning in the Premier League is not a true representation of the quality of the team, the club or the manager. Unfortunately for Jack, and for every other Newcastle fan, it seems the falsely optimistic mood coming out of the dressing room – akin to the Titanic rats having a sing-song – can’t hide from the fact that in almost every respect, the club remain bottom of the 2014 form table.

According to Sky Sports News, Aston Villa have made a shock bid for Real Sociedad’s Sergio Canales. The attacking midfielder only joined the La Liga side from Valencia in the January transfer window but Villa are willing to test the Spaniard’s resolve to hang on to the former Real Madrid star.
The Villans have a long-standing interest in Canales and were keen on him during his days with Madrid, attempting to take him on loan in the summer of 2011. However, they were snubbed by the former Spain U-21 international, who instead elected to join Valencia on loan before making his stay at the Mestalla permanent in 2012.

Head-to-head League Record: Aston Villa wins 7, Newcastle wins 8, draws 6.
The opening game of the Premier League weekend pits Paul Lambert’s Villains against Alan Pardew’s Magpies at 12.45pm, with the latter looking to recover from their opening day loss to Man City.
Villa meanwhile won away at Stoke, thanks to an imperious defensive performance by new signings Aly Cissokho, Philippe Senderos and key man Ron Vlaar. If Newcastle want to come away happy it is that back line that will have to be broken down.
With Siem De Jong back in the squad and in contention for his debut, goals might come easier, but Newcastle still look a little light up front.
At the tail end of last season Newcastle lost five straight away games, and Pardew will be looking to turn that tide.

While Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has received criticism for the acquisition of lower league talent that has subsequently failed at a higher level, the Midlands side have made plenty of other questionable signings down the years that will live long in the memory.
The most recent of strange signings include Yacouba Sylla, Aleksandar Tonev and Brett Holman - all players that have barely lasted a full season at the club before being loaned out and eventually sold or released.
Aston Villa don’t have the best track record for signings, due to the vast amount of players brought in through desperation, while their penchant to sign experienced Premier League stars meant them bringing in failed players who’ve just racked up a lot of appearances. News has broken today that Aston Villa’s defender Ron Vlaar has been placed as Mauricio Pochetinno’s number one defensive target after missing out on Dejan Lovren.
Spurs are already building from the back with recent arrivals of Michel Vorm and Ben Davies from Swansea City and Ron Vlaar could be next on the target list.
Vlaar, who won over many fans after his strong displays for Holland in the World Cup, is hot property and Villa manager Paul Lambert has already said he is not for sale but that won’t deter Daniel Levy in his quest to get Spurs back into the Champions League.
One way around Lambert’s reluctance to sell Vlaar to a Premier league rival will be Spurs plans to use either Michael Dawson and Lewis Holtby in a swap deal to benefit the Villains.

Roy Keane has quit ITV's World Cup punditry team to focus on football coaching.
The former Manchester United captain currently works with the Republic of Ireland setup, and has also been linked with an assistant role at Aston Villa under Paul Lambert.
An ITV spokesperson said: "Roy has been a tremendous part of our pundit team in recent years, but we fully understand his decision to concentrate wholly on his coaching. We wish him every success for the future."
Adrian Chiles will present ITV's World Cup 2014 coverage, and will be joined by pundits including Lee Dixon, Patrick Vieira, Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright, Andros Townsend, Martin O'Neill, Gordon Strachan, Gus Poyet and Fabio Cannavaro.
Keane previously appeared at ITV's World Cup launch two weeks ago, but has decided not to travel to Brazil.
ITV is thought to be open to Keane returning in the future.

Aston Villa have certainly had an up and down season that has included highs such as wins against Arsenal and Man City earlier in the season, but also the lows of losing games against the likes of Stoke, Crystal Palace and Sunderland. It’s fair to say that as with many teams, finding that consistent level of performance and results has been a big problem.
Of course, most pundits won’t have Villa down as a prediction for relegation; there will certainly be the view that more that there are teams with bigger problems. However, it’s vital that Paul Lambert’s team don’t complacent, and that is the very point of this slideshow.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert said his side “didn’t deserve to lose” after Everton fought back from a goal down at Goodison Park.
Leandro Bacuna had given Villa a first-half lead after some neat interplay with teammate Christian Benteke put him through on goal to slot past Tim Howard.
But Everton fought back in the second half thanks to goals from Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas, who curled in a superb 25-yard free-kick with just five minutes left to play.
A visibly disappointed Lambert said in his post-match press conference after full-time:
I thought for 71 minutes we were really comfortable in the game, before the first half we never looked really under threat. First goal was really poor from our point of view second goal I think you can hold your hand up and it’s a world class free-kick, and you can’t do nothing about that,...

As we enter transfer deadline day, one of the big talking points will be on Wes Hoolahan. At the time of writing he remains a Norwich City player – but that may not necessarily still be the case by late Friday night. The latest seems to be a case of Chris Hughton investigating comments that the Irish midfielder has allegedly made that put Norfolk in a less than favourable place.
It seems to me that this is a fairly obvious attempt to force a move through to Aston Villa, so it’s very much a case of watching this space. I will be taking a slightly different tact on things for this slideshow though, as I look at the reasons why Aston Villa shouldn’t be pursuing the player. With the January transfer window open there is always going to be plenty of speculation around about players going and coming in. In this slideshow, the focus is on Norwich City and in actual fact it discusses a possible departure and who could replace him.
Wes Hoolahan is a firm fans favourite, but he is struggling to see regular football under Chris Hughton this season as he has started only five league games. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing him. So far, Norwich have resisted Villa’s efforts.
However, with Grant Holt now at Villa Park and former Norwich manager Paul Lambert in charge of Villa there is enough mileage to suggest this transfer will go through. So, today we are looking at who the Canaries might turn to in order to replace the dynamic Irishman. As always,...

Aston Villa have signed Chelsea left back Ryan Bertrand on loan until the end of the season.
Capped twice by England, 24-year-old Bertrand has been out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge this season. He is behind Cesar Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole in the Blues pecking order.
Bertrand embarks upon his sixth different loan spell from Chelsea following temporary stints at Bournemouth, Oldham, Norwich, Reading and Nottingham Forest. He was a regular last term under Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez, making 38 Blues appearances in all competitions, but since Mourinho returned he has played just three games.
Villa boss Paul Lambert told the club’s official website:
“Ryan brings a lot of big-game experience, not only in the Barclays Premier League but even a Champions League final which Chelsea won, so he’ll be really good for us.“

Beleagured Norwich boss Chris Hughton has rubbished suggestions that Irish international midfielder Wes Hoolahan will be allowed to leave Carrow Road this January, according to Irish state broadcaster RTÉ.
The 31-year-old midfielder was the subject of interest from former boss and current Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert, but Hughton has stated firmly that the player won’t be allowed to leave this transfer window.
The former Irish international said this when questioned about a possible Hoolahan departure;
At the moment our concentration is on can we add to the squad, can we improve the squad, not on letting players go out. We’ve had a few injuries especially in midfield, and then Michael Turner will be out for a while as well. We are trying as hard as we can (to sign players) the same as everybody else, but January is a notoriously bad time to bring in players.

Aston Villa Transfers: 5 Strikers To Target In January To Cover For Christian Benteke’s Loss Of Form
AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth
Aston Villa are having a decent season considering they are getting no kind of form out of Belgium Striker Christian Benteke; Paul Lambert’s team currently sit 11th in the league with 23 points from the 20 games that they have played so far. The 19 goals that they have scored though is one of the less impressive goalscoring records in the league; only Norwich, Cardiff and Crystal Palace have scored fewer.
There is no doubt that at the heart of the problem is not having a player that looks capable of scoring regularly. I have already run through some creative options for the club to consider, but this all about adding another striker to their ranks to finish off the chances. Benteke started the season in a positive mood, but after injury has not managed to rediscover that form.
Things were looking manageable with Libor Kozak hitting four goals from eight starts,...

Arsenal avenged their opening day defeat and kept themselves top of the Premier League by winning at Aston Villa. Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud scored within a minute of one another, but the hosts fought back in the second half and pulled one back through Christian Benteke.
Paul Lambert can take solace from that improvement after the break, but several tactical changes – one enforced when defender Nathan Baker sustained a concussion – failed to bring about a favourable result.
Benteke’s goal drought ended, however, and that is another positive for the Villa Park faithful to take in the face of defeat. The Gunners meanwhile took to the field for the first time since losing Theo Walcott to a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Arsene Wenger was also without Mikel Arteta because of a calf strain, so he made three changes from their last Premier League outing.

Quick fire goals from Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud took Arsenal past Aston Villa despite a second half comeback led by Christian Benteke. Arsene Wenger’s Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League and avenged their opening day defeat with victory here.
Giroud nodded wide from Bacary Sagna’s cross for Arsenal inside five minutes. Fabian Delph then scuffed his shot at the other end when Benteke nicked the ball off Wilshere.
A long stoppage followed when Villa defender Nathan Baker took Serge Gnabry’s shot full in the face, was knocked unconscious and required treatment before being stretchered off. Leandro Bacuna replaced him as the hosts changed to 4-4-2.
This stop-start opening quarter drew to a close with Karim El Ahmadi screwing an improvised finish wide. Delph fed this midfielder runner after good work from home side front two Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert wants to bring Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Naughton to the West Midlands.
The Sunday Mirror reports that the 25-year-old fullback could be available for a cut-price £3 million. Lambert is keen on Naughton, who played under him at Norwich City two seasons ago.
Naughton has been in and out of the team at Spurs, covering either right or left back when injury and suspensions have left the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose unavailable. He and Walker joined Tottenham together from Sheffield United in 2009 for undisclosed fees.
Since Tim Sherwood took over as Hotspur head coach from Andre Villas-Boas, Naughton has played just one game. Villa have chopped and changed their fullbacks this season with Leandro Bacuna and another Blades academy product Matthew Lowton getting games on the right.
Joe Bennett and Antonio Luna – a summer signing from Sevilla – have vied for the left back berth.

Aston Villa’s pursuit of Irish international midfielder Wes Hoolahan is set to drag on until the end of the transfer window, according to a report in the Irish Independent.
Norwich have previously denied that Hoolahan had handed in a transfer request. However, the influential attacking midfielder is said to be keen to re-unite with former boss Paul Lambert.
Both clubs have history; acrimony still reigns over Lambert’s controversial move from Norwich to Aston Villa. It remains to be seen how this impacts negotiations.
It is reported that Aston Villa’s initial bid fell well below the £1.5 million reported in mainstream media yesterday, and also far short of Norwich’s valuation of the player.

Beleaguered West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is now an unbackable 1/5 to be the next Premier League manager sacked, according to Paddy Power.

It’s hard to believe that a manager that has his club 11th in the league is under pressure, but that appears to be the case for Paul Lambert. Nevertheless, he is acting perfectly calm and just getting on the job of taking Aston Villa as far up the league as possible.
It’s Lambert’s second season at Villa Park, and averting relegation last season – consolidation in the league appears to be on the agenda this time around. However, this piece if of course all about the transfer window and the areas that Villa may look to strengthen this month.
It appears that the Scottish manager has identified a creative midfielder to link the midfield to the attack as the missing link. So, here is a look at five potential options that can fulfil the role – as always it will be a mixture of opinion and stats from Who Scored.

It appears a growing number of Aston Villa fans are getting frustrated with Paul Lambert with some even calling him to be sacked. As a Norwich City fan that was devastated when he left, I feel a need to react. Football fans are fickle we know that, and they generally react to the last result that their team records.
However, those of us that understand this game at a higher level than the average fan must agree that Lambert is a top quality manager that is destined for the very top of our game. I think that the job he did last season at Villa under difficult circumstances went a long way to proving what a good manager he is.
Therefore, I am amazed to see that he is under pressure – but as well as fans being fickle they are often impatient as well. This could well...

Sunderland host Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa on New Year’s Day as they look to extend their unbeaten run to six games in all competitions, while Villa haven’t won in five.
Sunderland Head Coach Gus Poyet is hoping that the team’s recent run can cause some momentum and finally lift them off the bottom of the table to kick start the New Year, and on top of that, sign bigger name players on the back of it. He told The Sunderland Echo:
“We have had a five-game unbeaten run and if we get a good result against Aston Villa we might be talking about getting past one or two clubs at the bottom of the table.
“That would make us more attractive to potential signings we are hoping to attract.

Aston Villa host Premier League champions Manchester United on Sunday knowing their opponents have won on their last two visits to the West Midlands.
David Moyes’s men are 13 points off the pace in the title race this term going into the weekend fixtures. The Red Devils also have a mounting injury crisis which keeps key names from the spine of their side out.
Paul Lambert prepares for the champions knowing his charges have been better on the road than at Villa Park this season. Eleventh place in the table might look comfortable, but Villa are only six points above the relegation zone after 15 matches.

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen claimed that Dimitar Berbatov is fully committed to the club following his match winning performance against Aston Villa.
Speculation had been rife in the week about the Bulgarian’s desire to leave Craven Cottage, with the player’s agent being reported as saying he wants a move as soon as January.
Speaking after the match Meulensteen said Berbatov was committed to the Whites.
“I just had a good chat with him, like I said Berba is not a stranger to me.
“We know what games we have coming up all the way up to January, and he is fully committed to Fulham and the games that we’ve got ahead of us,” he said.
The Dutchman was delighted with Berbatov’s performance and admitted that the ex-Manchester United striker’s presence is important to the team.

Dimitar Berbatov put the transfer speculation surrounding his future to one side as he inspired Fulham to victory over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage.
The Bulgarian nonchalantly scored a penalty to add to Steve Sidwell’s 21st minute strike, allowing the Whites to secure a valuable 2-0 win – their first in seven Premier League games.
Fulham started the game brightly and had an early penalty claim turned down on 7 minutes after Berbatov appeared to be pushed in the box.
Moments later the Bulgarian was involved again, this time forcing Brad Guzan to tip his header onto the bar from Alexander Kacaniklic’s dangerous corner.
Aston Villa almost took the lead against the run of play as Christian Benteke flashed a header wide, following some good wing play from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
15 minutes in and Fulham came even closer to breaking the deadlock, Kacanaklic twice having good efforts blocked...
