James Adolphus’ new HBO documentary Being Mary Tyler Moore begins with an awkward 1966 interview of Moore by producer and talk show host David Susskind.
As Susskind rambles about how Laura Petrie, Moore’s character from The Dick Van Dyke Show, was a “strained idealization” of the American housewife, Moore sits with a big, clearly forced smile, before she finally breaks and launches into a celebration of Betty Friedan and The Feminine Mystique.
I’m rather sick of “Being” in the title for both documentaries and scripted stories — as if claiming to capture the essence of a person is shorthand for profundity — but Being Mary Tyler Moore is definitely invested in this sort of clash between superficial appearances and actual “being” when it comes to one of the most beloved and decorated women in TV history.
The documentary doesn’t always provide definitive answers on who Mary Tyler Moore was, but...

Wgn America is adding to its Prime Crime slate with the acquisition of two original series in the detective procedural genre — the comedic Carter, starring Jerry O’Connell (Billions), Sydney Poitier Heartsong (Chicago P.D.) and Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black), which will premiere August 7, and crime drama Gone, starring Chris Noth (The Good Wife), Leven Ramblin (The Hunger Games) and Danny Pino (CSI: Miami), for debut in early 2019.
Carter and Gone are part of Wgn America’s new programming strategy of cost-effective originals launched a year ago that involves acquisitions of already produced series, virtually all in the crime arena. The two new pickups represent a new element in the tactic. While all previous acquisitions have been foreign series — 2017 Canadian detective drama Bellevue starring Anna Paquin, 2015 Swedish-American thriller 100 Code, 2016 Canadian police series Shoot the Messenger and the 2017 Canadian drama Pure — Carter and Gone, while having international pedigree, both originated in the U.

Loud noises on both coasts — hosannas in New York, wails of despair in Los Angeles — are coming from basketball fans today after Phil Jackson was hired as president of the New York Knicks. But the move isn’t just about games. Investors wonder whether the Zen master, coach of 11 NBA champions, star player on two others, will help not just the Knicks but also its parent the Madison Square Garden Company? Executive Chairman Jim Dolan, whose family controls Msg as well as Cablevision and AMC Networks, introduced his new team president at a news conference this morning at the Garden. He says his pal Irving Azoff — the longtime personal manager (Eagles, Steely Dan, Christina Aguilera) and CEO of recently launched partnership Azoff Msg Entertainment – introduced him to Jackson in December at a party at his house. The retailer’s stock closed -12% today after it disclosed in an SEC filing that the agency is investigating two matters involving the company’s recent financial reports. On October 16 the SEC’s New York regional office told Barnes and Noble that it’s looking at a company earnings restatement in July. In addition, the SEC is curious about a charge by a “former non-executive employee” that some Information Technology expenses had been ”improperly allocated” between the Nook and Retail segments. “The Company is cooperating with the SEC, including responding to requests for documents,” Barnes and Noble says in the filing. Did the chain lose $117M of its market value today just because of an investigation? Probably not. Many investors have also become pessimistic about the number of Nook tablets and e-readers that Barnes and Noble will sell this holiday season — especially after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos attracted so much...

It seems so: Netflix shares are down 5.9% in afternoon trading even though the overall market is up slightly. The chill follows the disclosure late last week that Time Warner Cable is interested in becoming a co-owner of Hulu, which is weighing purchase and investment offers from seven companies. In addition to the No. 2 cable company, firms believed to be in the mix include Yahoo, Kkr, Silver Lake Management/Hollywood agency Wme, Guggenheim Digital, DirecTV, and the Chernin Group (in partnership with investors Qatar Holding and Providence Equity Partners). Netflix investors are particularly concerned about Time Warner Cable because it shows that “cable operators have to get in the Netflix world in order to compete,” says Maxim Group analyst John Tinker. “It highlights that [the streaming business] is going to become more competitive.” Shares in Coinstar — the company behind the Redbox rental kiosks and a new streaming venture with Verizon — are down 1.2%.

The stock is down 7.3% at midday following the book chain’s warning last night that there’s bad news ahead regarding its Nook e-readers and tablets. It now forecasts that Nook revenues for the fiscal year that ends in April will come in below $3B, with a cash-flow (Ebitda) loss that will be “greater than it was in fiscal 2012.” That contradicts Barnes & Noble‘s assurance last month that the Nook unit would generate revenues of about $3B, with a cash flow loss “at a comparable level to fiscal year 2012.” And it makes 2013 the third straight year that Barnes & Noble will miss its guidance, Maxim Group analyst John Tinker notes. The Nook business “is proving to be expensive — and with slowing revenues makes spinning it off to tech investors harder,” he says. “At some point the company has to quantify the amount it is prepared to lose.” The company says it...

HawthoRNe, TNT’s medical drama, just wrapped up its 3rd season and for Michael Vartan, that means he’s looking for his next job during his hiatus. “I would say you never stop looking for work as an actor,” he told me.
I talked to Michael on a conference call about what he does on his time off, auditioning and if he’s ‘method’ in his work.
If you get a chance, listen to the audio interview; he seemed like a really great, down-to-earth guy. He was open, honest and funny so I definitely recommend taking a listen!

Where do you see the longevity of the show?
Michael Vartan: You know, I’m not sure, it’s definitely in the hands of the writers. If you told me at the beginning – at the end of...

Who is the auteur of a production, the individual whose style and sensibility most shapes it? When it comes to film, the matter, for most people, was long ago settled by the journos-turned-filmmakers at Cahiers du Cinema over in France and critic Andrew Sarris back here in the states: the director. But what is the answer to that same question when it applies to the television? Because the medium inherently requires a much longer commitment from those who work in it, I think it’s even more of a relevant and interesting query, and I believe that I know the answer.
In television, directors, writers, and even actors tend to come and go over the course of a show’s run, and rarely have the final say on creative matters. Showrunners, however, are involved before the lights turn, and they tend to be the last ones to leave the room after the lights go out.

True Blood has tapped Hawthorne actress Christina Moore to join the season 4 cast as a recurring character. Moore, whose credits also include MADtv, That ’70s Show, and 90210, will play Suzanne McKittrick, a WASPy Texas housewife who possesses certain special abilities. Moore will shoot her True Blood arc while on hiatus from Hawthorne; production on the TNT drama’s third season (its first with new showrunner John Tinker) is scheduled to get underway this spring. Also landing multi-episode arcs on the upcoming season of True Blood are Neil Hopkins (a.k.a. Charlie’s brother Liam on Lost) as Claude, Claudine’s (Lara Pulver) mysterious brother, and Chris Butler (The Good Wife) as Emory, a prissy and conservative shapeshifter with his own agenda.

NEW YORK -- While the media and entertainment industry is projected to experience accelerated growth in the coming years, sector stocks will continue to show widely differing momentum, industry experts said here at a PricewaterhouseCoopers seminar Tuesday. "You have to be very selective", John Tinker, managing director of ThinkEquity, said in a panel discussion when asked about the outlook for sector stocks. "There is this separation between traditional media and the Yahoo!s of this world. This is (currently) the real growth sector, the Internet mainly, where growth is explosive."...
