“I spent a lot of time reviewing the silent films for crowd scenes –the way extras move, evolve, how the space is staged and how the cameras capture it, the views used,” Nolan said earlier this year when it came to the creation of his WWII epic Dunkirk, referencing films such as Intolerance, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and Greed, as well as the films of Robert Bresson.
Throughout the entire month of July, if you’re in the U.K., you are lucky enough to witness a selection of these influences in a program at BFI Southbank. Featuring all screenings in 35mm or 70mm — including a preview of Dunkirk over a week before it hits theaters — there’s classics such as Greed, Sunrise, and The Wages of Fear, as well as Alien, Speed, and even Tony Scott’s final film.

Running from 1-31 July, BFI Southbank are delighted to present a season of films which have inspired director Christopher Nolan’s new feature Dunkirk (2017), released in cinemas across the UK on Friday 21 July.
Christopher Nolan Presents has been personally curated by the award-winning director and will offer audiences unique insight into the films which influenced his hotly anticipated take on one of the key moments of WWII.
The season will include a special preview screening of Dunkirk on Thursday 13 July, which will be presented in 70mm and include an introduction from the director himself.
Christopher Nolan is a passionate advocate for the importance of seeing films projected on film, and as one of the few cinemas in the UK that still shows a vast amount of celluloid film, BFI Southbank will screen all the films in the season on 35mm or 70mm.

This charming Roy Rogers oater could reboot interest in vintage ‘series’ westerns. Basically a film for little kids, it’s earnestly played by all concerned and director William Witney’s direction sparkles. The added filip that makes the difference is the beautifully restored Trucolor image — Roy’s wonder horse Trigger is indeed magnificent. I listened carefully, but I don’t think Roy actually says, “Yippie-ki-yay, M_____f____r.”

The Performance | Since Paula wasn’t going to live through “The Same Boat,” Witt, who played Carol and Maggie’s captor, didn’t have a moment to waste. A federal judge officially sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death on Wednesday for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing. “I am sorry for the lives that I’ve taken, the sorrow I have caused,” Tsarnaev said before thanking Allah. “I want to ask forgiveness of Allah and his creation.” Judge George O’Toole addressed Tsarnaev during the federal sentencing hearing: “Whenever your name is mentioned, what will be remembered is the evil you did. What will be remembered is you murdered and maimed innocent people.” Also Read: Boston Marathon Bomber Sentenced to Death Penalty Tsarnaev emphatically pronounced his guilt. “In case there is any doubt,...

Grey’s Anatomy fans, you’ll soon be able to set a date with T.R. Knight. The actor, best known for playing George O’Malley during the first five seasons of the hit ABC medical drama, has joined Hulu’s 11/22/63, an upcoming event series from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King that stars James Franco, according to TVLine. 11/22/63 is based on King’s best-selling novel of the same name and will center on Jake Epping (Franco), a high school English teacher who travels back in time to try to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Jake finds his mission threatened by love, the Lee Harvey Oswald (played by Australian actor Daniel Webber), and the past itself, which (of course) does not want to be changed. Knight will take on the recurring role of Johnny Clayton, “a salesman in 1960s Texas who can’t quite break up with his estranged...

Rip, George O’Malley, who died after heroically jumping in front of a bus; Denny Duquette, who died after a heart transplant; Lexie Grey and Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, who both died in a plane crash. This is just the short list of characters showrunner Shonda Rhimes and her staff of writers have killed off over 11 seasons of the medical drama, understandably, for the most part. This show mostly takes place in a hospital — people are going to die. But even on Grey's, major players typically don't die without a fight or (at least!) a full-season arc before their deaths. Last night, without reason, we lost Dr. Derek Shepherd. With little preparation or lead-up, Rhimes (who wrote the episode herself) viciously killed off one half of Grey's golden couple. Dr. Derek Shepherd, known as “McDreamy,” or the "Der" part of “MerDer” (an adorable 'shipping name), was hit by a truck,...

In the moments before he was arrested on April 19, 2013, accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev used a pencil to scrawl on the inside of a boat parked behind a home in Watertown, Massachusetts. Nearly two years later, those writings - riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood - were introduced in federal court as evidence in the murder case against him. Tsarnaev addressed the loss of his brother, Tamerlan, who had died in a police shootout earlier that day. "I do not mourn because his soul is very much alive," the message said. "God has a plan for each person.

John Hawkes, who won an Oscar nomination for his roles as a menacing uncle in "Winter's Bone" and who plays a manipulative cult leader in "Martha Marcy May Marlene," isn't looking to build on his body of creepy character work with more villains in the immediate future. Although he's been offered the part of Charlie Manson, he always turns it down. And while there's been speculation that he would play John Wilkes Booth in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln epic about to go into production, Hawkes told IFC that his part is actually very different.
"I'm playing a real-life guy who wasn't famous," the actor said. "He's a lobbyist from Albany, who is called in by the Secretary of State [William Seward, played by David Straitharn] to aid Lincoln's case."
This leaves four possible candidates for Hawkes' character: W.N. Bilbo, Emanuel B. Hart, Robert W. Latham, or George O. Jones, all of who helped steer the...
