The Armando Iannucci comedy series “Avenue 5” has been canceled after two seasons at HBO, Variety has learned.
“Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey,” an HBO spokesperson said. “While we will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Avenue 5,’ we look forward to many more adventures together.”
The series originally debuted on HBO in January 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic production on Season 2 could not begin until late 2021, with the second season finally debuting in October 2022. The series ultimately received middling reviews upon its release and generated only modest ratings.
The series starred Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips.
The series took place in the not-so-distant future when space tourism is a booming business. Per the official logline, “While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd (Gad), Captain Ryan Clark...

The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.
Created by two-time Emmy winner and “Veep” alum Armando Iannucci, “Avenue 5” is set 40 years into the future where traveling the solar system is a booming tourism business. The Sweeney
Review by Jeff Galasso
Stars: Ray Winstone, Ben Drew, Hayley Atwell, Steven Mackintosh | Written and Directed by Nick Love
In the 1970s, Ian Kennedy Martin’s The Sweeney was a ground-breaking British television drama that exposed the rough underbelly of the Metropolitan police force- one which had previously been ignored by the media. Now, over 30 years later, police brutality and corruption seems rather passé; countless TV programmes and films have explored the dark side of law enforcement. So what can the big screen reboot of the iconic British coppers, The Sweeney, offer in the year 2012? With writer/director Nick Love playing a poor man’s Michael Mann, the answer is: not much at all.
As Ray Winstone steps into John Thaw’s shoes as the leader of the flying squad, Jack Regan, some artistic license has been taken in modernising the character. Regan’s drinking has been swapped...

Fans of the hit 70s TV series have no fear: Director-writer Nick Love has taken the heart and soul of the iconic characters, Regan and Carter, and given them a cosmetic 2012 facelift, thrusting the chauvinistic, hard-nosed coppers into a contemporary, clinical crime-fighting environment, complete with latter-day baddies. In fact, Love is wise not to try and replicate what made the TV series so popular in any way (as others have unsuccessfully done), instead putting his own unique and ever-comical deadpan ‘hard boys’ stamp on this project, but with subtler effect.
For those unfamiliar with ‘the lads’, this film version centres on the jaded older character Regan, played by Brit pit-bull Ray Winstone. Detective Regan and his team of hardened Flying Squad coppers of London’s Met police force are set up to take a fall with tragic consequences. Pursued by Internal Affairs at the same time, Regan makes it his...

This remake doesn't feel like it's based on anything remotely real
The writer Ian Kennedy-Martin based the original television series The Sweeney on the hard-drinking escapades and questionable methods of a real-life Flying Squad copper, but this remake doesn't feel like it's based on anything remotely real. It doesn't even feel like it's based on The Sweeney.
Rather than upgrading the 1970s TV favourite, it treats it like a stolen car – to be stripped down, resprayed and erased of identifying features. Only the brand name has been retained.
We never even see an actual police station; this Flying Squad seems to operate out of a spacious, hi-tech corporate office building high above the city. We barely see any real Londoners, or even the real London. The movie almost entirely restricts itself to the glossy, steely modern cityscapes of the capital.
Throw in lots of helicopter shots and a greyed-out colour scheme,...

Stalwart of the TV police series Juliet Bravo
Noel Collins, who has died of cancer aged 74, was a linchpin of the police series Juliet Bravo throughout its entire six-series run. As Sergeant George Parrish, he was familiar for his "Yes, ma'am" response to consecutive uniformed inspectors Jean Darblay (Stephanie Turner) and Kate Longton (Anna Carteret). Parrish and his male colleagues were seen adjusting to working with a female boss in the BBC programme, which was launched a decade before the more hard-edged Prime Suspect – although four months after ITV's The Gentle Touch, which starred Jill Gascoine as a detective inspector.
The pace of life was slow in Juliet Bravo, whose title came from a police call-sign. The series (1980-85), set in the fictional Lancashire town of Hartley and described by one television critic as "Dixon in skirts", was also notable for being the flipside to its creator Ian Kennedy-Martin's previous,...

The hip-hop musician says being cast as George Carter alongside Ray Winstone as Jack Regan is a dream come true
The rapper Plan B is the new Dennis Waterman. And he's delighted. The Brit award-winning pop star said his casting in the role of George Carter for the film version of The Sweeney was a "dream come true".

For the longest time it seemed that the movie adaptation of Ian Kennedy-Martin's quintessential gritty 70s police show, which followed the down-at-heel sleuthing and kicking of ultrahard northern cop Jack Regan (John Thaw) and long-suffering London sidekick George Carter (Dennis Waterman) over four seasons and two movies, might stay in development hell. But you can't keep a bolshy copper down, and thank God The Sweeney has turned to the 'predictable' choice for its reboot/remake, as there is no actor in the UK better-fitted to play Regan than Ray Winstone.
He's joined, we hear now, by 'Plan B' (Ben Drew), who will take up the role formerly played by Waterman. 27 year-old rapper Drew has previously appeared in Adulthood (2008) and Harry Brown (2009), among others, and this year sees his directorial debut with Ill Manors. Actor Ray Winstone ("Sexy Beast") has now signed on to play the lead role of Officer 'Jack Regan' in a feature film remake of the 1975 UK TV series "The Sweeney".
The original police drama, lensed entirely on film by Thames Television's Euston Films, focused on two members of the 'Flying Squad', a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in tackling armed robbery and violent crime in London.
The title derives from 'Sweeney Todd', which is Cockney rhyming slang for 'Flying Squad'.
The series previously spun-off the Mow films "Sweeney!" /"Sweeney 2".

James Bond star, Daniel Craig, is one of the big names under consideration to play the role of Jack Regan in the remake of the 1970s television police drama The Sweeney.
