NBA All-Star Baron Davis has sold a half hour comedy pitch to Fox that’s loosely-based on his life, and centers on a South Central-raised kid who receives a scholarship to attend a prestigious suburban school, and has to balance the world he already knows with the one he's entering. It will be written and exec produced by Courtney Lilly - a writer whose name has popped up on this site a few times over the years: Chris Rock’s "Everybody Hates Chris," "Arrested Development," "The Cleveland Show," "Guys with Kids," and more. The new shingle is called The Walcott Company and the duo have brought Management 360’s Mary Lee on board to run it for them. This follows the actor and the writer-director collaborating on the single camera comedy pilot The B-Team for Fox TV and Imagine TV last year as well as Winkler directing a number of episodes of New Girl’s recently concluded second season. The two sold a mob feature comedy pitch to Warner Bros last year. Repped by CAA and Management 360, Winkler is set to direct The Coward, based on an adaptation he co-wrote with Matt Spicer of Nick Jones’ comic play about 18th century English aristocrats. Two young boys, looking for adventure and a place to call their own, set off into the wilderness and learn a lot about themselves, adulthood, and the complexities of life in the process. This isn’t a new narrative, by any stretch, and its one that has repeated over centuries in popular culture. There is perhaps no better example of the “young boy in nature” story than Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and the novel is the high water mark against which many stories in this vein must be measured.
Every summer seems to herald a number of undercooked, over-exaggerated “trend” pieces about patterns in the films of the summer and about what that says about our culture as a whole. Rest assured, this is not another one of those. Rather, it is an examination of two films that tell similar stories in drastically different ways and with varying levels of success.

Some of this year’s Sundance comedy-dramas have had their narratives plucked from the wellspring of their director’s personal experience, though that should never excuse any shortcomings. Yesterday, I wrote a negative review of Francesca Gregorini’s treatment of motherhood in Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes. My primary beef was less with the inherent trauma at the centre of the story, and more to do with the formal missteps that, regrettably, had a few critics in my screening snickering quietly to themselves. Their mockery was, again, not directed at the content but its aesthetic delivery, deemed preposterous once the third act indulged in a questionable surrealistic abandon.
Stand-up comedians can rarely be accused of surrendering to melodramatic impulses of the like seen in Gregorini’s feature. Us comic Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk with Me leaps into fantastical dream sequences that illustrate his subconscious fears of marriage and fatherhood,...

You know, I really like this side of Matthew McConaughey. No charming romantic comedy wit, not pretty boy antics, and hell, he keeps his shirt on for almost the entire movie! Almost? Eh, how can the man deprive the ladies what they want? But don’t be fooled by McConaughey’s presence in the film, for Jeff Nichols’ Mud is nothing like a stereotypical role for the actor. This is all part of his “breaking out” period which has seen Matthew take roles you wouldn’t expect in Bernie, Killer Joe, and Dallas Buyers Club (where we’ll see a skeleton-looking version of the typically buff actor), and writer/director Jeff Nichols used him perfectly.
Nichols’ country-twang coming-of-age story follows two young boys named Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) who go exploring on an island in search of a boat which now sits peacefully in a tree after some brutal flooding.

Mud is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios—he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

In the fictional New England town of Amity Island, local officials scoffed at Sheriff Brody when he told them there was a man-eating shark in the nearby waters. Sharks like that don't come here, they snarked. Of course, then that little Kintner boy was gobbled up while tourists and locals fled in terror. I've confessed before that Jaws has instilled in me a deep fear of the ocean and of sharks, a fear that many of my loved ones feel is irrational. Well, I'm feeling both smug and terrified at news that a real-life and really massive great white shark has been spotted off the coast of Long Island, New York, a place just miles away from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where the majority of Jaws was shot. The Huffington Post reports this 16-foot long great white weighs in at nearly 3,500-pounds and her name is Mary Lee. I know, that's...

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, a 3,500 pound Great White Shark is on the loose, about 45 miles off the coast of Montauk Point in the Hamptons. You shouldn't have to worry about this one, though. The shark, named Mary Lee, was tagged for tracking by Ocearch, a nonprofit organization, in 2012, according to the Atlantic Wire.
She swam down to warmer waters in Florida around Christmas, before returning up north to the vacation hotspot. Luckily, it's January, so there's not a lot of people looking for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. The Coast Guard reports that Mary Lee is actually moving further away from the shoreline. So, unlike Bruce, the shark from "Jaws," Mary Lee seems to be fairly harmless at this point.
While Mary Lee is actually named after the mother of Ocearch chairman, Chris Fischer, the name also has a "Jaws" connection.

A Denver man who sued a supermarket claiming that he developed a chronic lung condition from eating too much popcorn has won $$7.2m (£4.4m) in a verdict against various food companies. "Mud," American writer/director Jeff Nichols' underwhelming follow-up to the masterfully visceral "Take Shelter," is both a shallow and contrived coming of age story. While both 'Shelter' and "Shotgun Stories," Nichols' promising debut feature, explore their respective characters' motives and emotions, "Mud" instead offers pat sentiments and bland bathos.
While his parents talk about separating, Ellis (Tye Sheridan, one of the boys in Malick's "The Tree Of Life"), an adolescent native of DeWitt, Arkansas, helps Mud (an accomplished performance from Matthew McConaughey), a fugitive, reunite with his lover. Ellis isn't initially sure why he confides in Mud. But ultimately, Ellis sticks by the titular Byronic redneck in a predictably vain attempt to understand his parents’ break-up and why self-evident displays of affection cannot be taken at face value. Every ounce of mystery and promise established in the first half hour of "Mud" evaporates once it becomes clear that Nichols...

Bubba is a mentally challenged but good natured man who spends his spare time playing with a little girl in their local farming community. After taking out mob justice with their shotguns, the men are shocked to find out that the little girl survived and Bubba was the one who saved her from the dog. The funnyman took out an injunction against Mary Lee Harvey last month after she accused him of cheating on her during their marriage.

But Harvey, who denies her claims, seems determined to have the last laugh - Mary Lee tells TMZ.com that three days after Valentine's Day, she was served "with a box of chocolates, a romantic card, and a notice saying you are going to be required to come back to court on March 10".

It’s 35 years since Jaws hit multiplexes, become an instant classic, made bucket loads of money, turned its director into a star and made bathers think twice before going into the water. Since then we have had some toothless sequels, countless rip offs, lots of movie referencing (Airplane and Back to the Future Part II being the best) and a shark mythology that refuses to die. But what were the essential elements that made Jaws a phenomenon?
In the fourth of our giant sized movie celebration articles (various Owf writers have previously argued for Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Back to the Future and Psycho) and in no particular order here are 50 reasons why Jaws may in fact be the greatest film of all time…

Whether it was mechanical shark difficulties or a wise directors’ decision (or probably a bit of both), there’s no denying that less is considerably more with old rubber teeth.
