Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.

The Age of Aquarius will continue for NBC, now that the network has seen fit to renew the 1960s-set drama for a second season to air next summer.
David Duchovny stars as an honest cop in the Summer of Love, navigating a politically charged and socially transforming climate as he investigates a sinister musician named Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony). Emma Dumont, Grey Damon and Claire Holt all co-star.
Aquarius represented a daring experiment for NBC, with the entire 13-episode season becoming available online following the TV premiere. Ratings on the small screen have been modest, but NBC cites the show’s performance on digital platforms, where viewers could choose to binge-watch the season, as the driving force behind the renewal.

We have a couple of updates for NBC's "Grimm" that should help fill the void until the Olympics are over and the show returns, including word on a new guest star and the upcoming digital series "Love Is in the Air."
Per TV Guide, C. Thomas Howell (pictured; "Southland," "Criminal Minds") will play FBI agent Weston Steward in Episode 3.18. Because of his experience and capability, Prince Vikton (Alexis Denisof) views Weston as an invaluable resource when Stateside issues need to be handled swiftly and precisely.
Also, as we told you in late January when we heard from "Grimm" co-stars Silas Weir Mitchell and Bree Turner (full interview here), a new standalone web series is on its way that focuses on Juliette and Rosalee and their friendship; and we have more details on that as follows:

NBC Digital has laid off just under 5 percent of its employees, insiders said Tuesday. The layoffs are part of an effort by Rob Hayes, the recently named executive vp digital media, to "refocus and restructure" the business, one source said. Hayes, a highly regarded former Showtime executive, was tapped in June to run NBC Digital, with one mandate being that he more closely align digital efforts with programming strategies. "As NBC expands its digital media reach, we want to take full advantage of the synergy between programming, marketing and digital media," NBC Broadcasting chairman Ted Harbert said at the time.

NBC Digital began laying off employees this morning. According to insiders, about 4 out of a staff of 80 got the axe. NBC declined to comment. The prelude to the layoffs came two weeks ago when Rob Hayes, Evp Digital Media for NBC, announced a division overhaul, in which four new executives were added to the digital team: Michael Martin, Svp, Product, Technology & Operations; Tom Blaxland, VP, Production; Eddie Lee, VP, Technology; and Ross Cox, VP, Product. In addition to those hires, Matt Allen and Trideev Dasgupta wee upped to VP, Digital Integrations and VP, Digital Business Development & Strategy, respectively, reporting to Ann McGowan, Svp, Digital Business Development & Strategy. Today’s layoffs are the result of that restructuring, insiders say. It’s been a little more than a year since Hayes was named Evp, replacing longtime NBCUniversal digital chief Vivi Zigler who left the company. Hayes was among the former Showtime execs...

We have learned that five senior NBC.com employees were laid off today. The list includes VPs Josie Ventura (VP Primetime Production), Emre Celik (VP technology) and Robert Angelo (VP Late Night, Daytime & Mobile), Senior Quality Assurance Manager Jennifer Grant and Chris Himes, Supervising Digital Producer, SNL, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, 30 Rock. Word is that the shakeup is part of a restructuring and staff overhaul implemented by NBC’s new digital chief, Evp digital media Robert Hayes, who joined NBC last summer. The positions are expected to be refilled. With NBCU as one of the main backers of Hulu, the content on NBC.com and Hulu often overlaps, challenging NBC.com to forge its own identity.

The war for TV viewership began long before this fall’s slated premiere dates in September and October, and if any network took the opportunity to strike early this season, it had to be NBC.
In the TV business, ratings are key. Ratings determine how much networks can charge advertisers for airing commercials — the higher the rating, the higher the price tag. All of the networks want good ratings to make more money from advertising, and ratings are often the lifeline of a show, no matter how loyal its following. (Just look at NBC’s Community, which has a passionate fan base but has been moved to Fridays due to low ratings.) And in efforts to climb out of their fourth place slump, NBC has stepped up its game.
As part of its aggressive strategy, NBC aired the pilots of new series Animal Practice and Go On after the Olympics.

We continue our examination of the business book In Search of Excellence with an interview of author Tom Peters. Why was it so successful, what is the book's legacy and what does a restaurant owner in Chicago have in common with Jack Welch?
What was the impetus for you to write In Search of Excellence?
In the mid to late '70s the U.S. was going through something that, on many dimensions, looks closely akin to what's going on today with China, only it was with Japan. And the idea was that America's time was up. Japanese companies and the Japanese economy was going to take over the world. It was extreme, as it turned out--just as I think a lot of the language is today. A couple of guys, Bill Abernathy and Bob Hayes, wrote a seminal article in Harvard Business Review which was called, "Managing Our Way to Economic Decline.

A tough crowd at the Bifas, why Airplane II should have been an entirely different movie, and avoiding the wrath of Nina Simone
Cheer up, it's an awards ceremony
Martin Freeman hops off to New Zealand in January to play Bilbo Baggins. He was at the Bifas last week, and at BBC London radio, following me around like a little hobbity thing. Go to Middle-earth, I said, and seize your huge break of a role. "I'll give it a go," he said. You don't seem too happy about it, I ventured. "Oh, well," he said, perking up a bit, "I'll try to do as good a job as possible and not muck it up." Freeman clearly fears being away from his lovely family for so long but will nevertheless be in good company in New Zealand, with Bifa host James Nesbitt, whose new head of hair looked surprisingly good, I thought.

Before heading to The Runaways red carpet premiere in NYC, I was lucky enough to interview Cherie Currie. From lead singer of the first all female rock group, The Runaways, to Hollywood actress and celebrated chainsaw artist – Cherie has never lived a “normal” life, but she has certainly lived... It was unsurprising then that eventually Cherie’s life would be picked up by Hollywood and her “memoir of a Runaway” book, Neon Angel, become adapted for the big screen as the critically acclaimed The Runaways, starring Dakota Fanning (as Cherie) Kristen Stewart and with former band mate, Joan Jett as the executive producer. Talking candidly about everything from the glitter and grit of the days on the road, to the dark demons of drugs and sexual abuse - Cherie waded through and came up as determined as ever, proving no less spirit or spark than of the original Cherry Bomb!

My favorite answer to a question VCs get every time they sit on panels was from Gordon Moore. "When is it a good time to start a company?" someone asked. Moore shook his head incredulously and answered, "When you have a good idea!"
If you look at the history of successful companies, they start up in good times and bad. Those started in poor economic times include Microsoft in 1975 and Lotus in 1982 and contemporaries such as LinkedIn in 2003 and Facebook in 2004. But you can just as easily find great companies that were started in good economic times. I can tell you that now definitely appears to be a great time to start a company. And the current economy is a big part of that reason.
Eighteen months ago I was seeing new companies at a pace I had never experienced. At First Round Capital we added 2,400 new companies to our database,...

Showtime has inked a deal with virtual world technology company The Electric Sheep Company to create a standalone Web-based virtual world for drama series "The L Word."
The L Word virtual world, which begins testing next month and formally launches with the debut of the series' new season in early 2009, will be the first to use Electric Sheep's new WebFlock, a Flash-based solution that eliminates the lengthy downloads and other technological barriers that have prevented some virtual worlds from attracting the mass market.
Rob Hayes, vp and general manager for Showtime Digital Media, noted "Word" did have a successful promotion last year in Second Life, but added he expects to this program to attract a much larger audience.
In addition to screenings of "Word" episodes, Hayes foresees a whirlwind of virtual activity surrounding the series. "We'll also have celebrity guests as well as speed dating events and birthday party kits," he said. "Some of these will be centered on the show and some of them will be around the lifestyles, but the goal is to find ways to extend the brand."
Though Showtime currently views virtual worlds primarily as a promotional tool, Hayes said it also considering ways to monetize this avatar-based audience going forward.
"Word" will be the first to use WebFlock, but Electric Sheep CEO Sibley Verbeck said the company is already in talks with other entertainment brands intrigued not only by a user-friendly Web-based solution, but also by the opportunity to create their own stand-alone worlds rather than run programs on existing worlds like Second Life.
"These brands want to have a relationship directly with their audience and not have to participate in a system where someone else might be advertising right along with them," Verbeck added. "We can drive hundreds of thousands or millions of people into a virtual world where they can immediately come into a virtual space and navigate around simply by loading one web page."...
