The program for amfAR’s milestone 30th Cannes gala is growing.
Nick Jonas has booked a trip and will perform at the starry event which will also feature a “special musical moment” by Cher. Demi Moore is hosting the gala on May 23, a showing that will punctuate a busy festival for the veteran actress who has a film in competition, The Substance, and duties with Chopard as the jeweler’s godmother for a gala ceremony.
“We could not be more excited to add the amazing Nick Jonas to our Cannes lineup this year,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost. “We are grateful to him for recognizing the importance of amfAR’s work in the fight against AIDS and we know that, together with Demi Moore and Cher, he will make this an unforgettable evening.”

Fred Schepisi is set to direct Israel-based thriller “The Dimona Affair,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on the story of a whistleblower who claimed Israel was building a nuclear weapons program. (The country has always denied it has nuclear weapons).
After giving The Sunday Times of London a detailed interview about the program in the 1980s, causing an international scandal, “low level” Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu fled the country. He was then reportedly lured to Rome by a female Israeli secret service agent in a honeytrap operation where he was kidnapped and repatriated to Israel. Vanunu eventually stood trial for espionage and treason before being convicted and jailed.
Schepisi, whose last feature project was “Words and Pictures” starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binochein 2013, is set to direct from a script penned by screenwriter and investigative journalist Morrie Rosmarin.

“Bonnie is legendary for her boundless energy on the Crosiette,” AGC Studios head Stuart Ford said of his marketing head Bonnie Voland, whose 40th Cannes Festival was celebrated by Ford and friends at an elegant beachside cocktail on Friday evening.
“This is my 15th Cannes with Bonnie Voland and I’m not sure I still have the energy to keep up with her,” he confessed in a speech in her honor at the cocktail.
Voland has had a rich career to date, – she insists she’s certainly not done yet – graduating as a French major at Hunter College, and working as an actress in Paris before first attending Cannes in 1982 for Passion – The Magazine of Paris. She ran the Toronto Festival press office in the mid-eighties, then worked in Los Angeles for Samuel Goldwyn, Buena Vista International and Chris Blackwell’s Island Pictures, and created her own PR agency and consultancy B. Voland International.

Lakeshore Entertainment has put its film library on the block as it seeks to expand its activities in television.
The company quietly began shopping its 300-title library earlier this year. Moelis & Co. is handling the sale process.
“Over the past 20 years, Lakeshore has built a top-tier 300-title motion picture library through production and acquisition, with films such as ‘Runaway Bride,’ ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ ‘Lincoln Lawyer,’ and the ‘Underworld’ franchise,” Lakeshore spokesman Dennis Davidson told Variety. “Premium content has proven highly desirable to a multitude of financial and strategic buyers and Lakeshore’s library, including its numerous remake, sequel/prequel, and television adaptation rights, is an ideal asset for them. Lakeshore is investigating monetizing this library, which will allow the company to expand into television, as well as continue its broad feature film production.”
Lakeshore decided to test the waters for its vault after receiving a few unsolicited inquiries from interested buyers.

The breakfast buffet at the Beachcomber restaurant just past the more impressive of the two impressive swimming pools of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel is overwhelming. My judgment collapses in the face of its multiple offerings -- Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, western. Somehow I find myself consuming excellent chicken curry, roti bread with sambal, dim sum, smoked salmon with garnishes, assorted French cheeses, fresh fruit with yogurt, a couple of tiny pastries – and I still only sampled a fraction of its possibilities. I’m greeted by Dana Archer of the PR firm Dennis Davidson Associates, and join Variety’s Alissa Simon, who I just saw in Morelia. She’s a five-year veteran of the Dubai festival. She mentions that there is indeed a press screening of an Arab film this afternoon at 3. The only other scheduled event is the opening night film, Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” which I will attend...

Every May, an international swarm descends on a picturesque French Riviera resort town for two weeks of sunshine, parties, hype and all things cinema. With glamorous movie stars, preeminent filmmakers, wealthy jetsetters, fast-talking dealmakers, tuxedoed paparazzi, hopeful wannabes and dedicated cinephiles, this is the wild mélange known as the Cannes Film Festival.
In anticipation of this year’s fest, Moving Pictures asked a cross-section of industry figures — from veteran attendees to more recent Cannes alums — to share their most vivid memories of what continues to be the world’s most famous and prestigious festival of film. We were all stunned by the film, and for several days afterward,...

Toronto -- DDA Consulting's Dennis Davidson has signed on to represent the Marcia Gay Harden-starrer "If I Were You," which just wrapped production in Toronto after a five-week shoot (Hr, 01/19).
Davidson is lining up a sales agent to start shopping the Paragragh Pictures' dramedy in Cannes.
"If I Were You," written and directed by Joan Carr-Wiggin, also stars Leonor Watling and Aidan Quinn in a film about two women who become unlikely friends to fix their troubled lives.
The comedy drama from producers David Gordian and Alan Latham also stars Joseph Kell, Michael Therriault, Elizabeth Whitmere, Claire Brosseau and Bethany Jillard.

London -- DDA Public Relations is to be bought out by management in a move that sees founder and chairman Dennis Davidson look to concentrate on a small roster of long-term clients and a handful of recent additions.
The global PR house, with offices here and in Los Angeles, will fall into management hands after an MBO that is set to "take seven years to complete," Davidson said.
Lawrence Atkinson, who has been running the day-to-day operations for the past three years and John Stannard, DDA's chief financial officer, have acquired "a substantial equity stake" in DDA Public Relations as part of the MBO.
Atkinson and Stannard will become CEO and COO respectively at the firm. Davidson will serve as Chair of the enlarged board of directors.

[Very sad and surprising news here, with the sudden passing of Fortissimo Films founder Wouter Barendrecht.]
Fortissimo Films is deeply saddened to confirm that company founder and co-chairman Wouter Barendrecht died on Sunday, April 5, 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand where he had gone to screen a rough cut of Fortissimo’s upcoming Thai co-production Nymph.
Barendrecht was a passionate advocate of independent cinema for his entire career, the last 19 years of which were at Fortissimo Films and previously at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where he helped create the Cinemart co-production forum. His sudden death, of heart failure, is an inestimable loss: to his beloved family and co-workers, his international circle of friends, and film-making itself, where his enthusiasm and drive helped create enduring testaments to his memory.
Although just 43 when he died, Barendrecht’s vision helped a generation of film-makers reach a global audience, particularly in Asia where he moved to Hong Kong in 1997 upon the advice of acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai to set up the Fortissimo...

LONDON -- London PR house DDA said Wednesday it has hired U.K. Film Council publicist Ian Thomson to head its DDA Consulting division. He will take up his role in October. Launched in 2003, the division currently advises on business development, corporate positioning and fundraising issues, and crisis management. A familiar face on the U.K. media scene, Thomson joins after five years with the U.K. Film Council. DDA is made up of four operating companies: DDA Public Relations, DDA Event Management, DDA Prods. and DDA Consulting.
