“You have to put it in the script. If you put in the script – it will happen.”
This is Geena Davis’ sage advice to filmmakers when crafting stories aiming to incorporate inclusive storylines and characters.
“Nobody is going to second guess if it says the scene takes place at, say, ‘a police station which is 40 women,’ or if there’s a scene where ‘a crowd gathers, which is half female,’” continues the Oscar-winning actor and founder of the eponymous Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
“Specify what it is. You have to write in the script.”
That advice came to fruition in “The Seven Faces of Jane,” a surrealistic anthology film that held its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival’s eighth edition last night in the quaint Arkansas city, home to Walmart’s global headquarters. The fest, founded and chaired by Davis, runs in-person through June...

Variety can exclusively reveal a clip from “The Seven Faces of Jane,” produced by Roman Coppola and starring Gillian Jacobs, which will have its world premiere as the opening night film at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, Arkansas on June 22.
The eight-chapter experiential road trip film is co-directed by Julian Acosta, Xan Cassavetes, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Boma Iluma, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong and Alex Takacs.
Automobile giant Ford was looking for a unique way to reach consumers about new electric vehicle Mustang Mach E and speak to a diverse audience in authentic voices. For “The Seven Faces of Jane,” Roman Coppola had the vision of creating a film using the “Exquisite Corpse” concept, a method of creating art by collectively assembling parts to create a whole. This format consisted of each filmmaker contributing a segment with little to no knowledge of what the others were doing, and they were...

One of TV’s biggest potential selling points in its current state is Total Creative Freedom. The extent to which that’s a reality for anyone outside showrunner auteurs commanding nine-figure development deals is suspect, but there’s an ever-growing mythos around television as a place where creative ambitions face fewer speedbumps. Since its inception two years ago, the HBO anthology series “Room 104” has been one of the best-case scenarios of this lack of constraint.
Still, even as episodes flit around between genres and a bevy of different creative voices, the show is working within one of the wildest restrictions of any show on TV: staging every episode inside an unassuming motel room. In the show’s Season 3, debuting Friday night on HBO, “Room 104” goes to its greatest lengths yet to ensure that none of these dozen new episodes feel like what the show has done before.

For over 40 years now, tales of demonic possession have been a faithful staple of horror movies. At least one major release each year dealing with a character – usually a young woman – struggling to shake off a particularly pesky poltergeist, spirit or even Satan itself, often with the help of an in/experienced clergyman.
As such, the market for these movies has become saturated with some pretty samey fare. Which is why it’s somewhat refreshing (if not entirely novel) to see The Atticus Institute tackle the familiar subject matter as a faux-documentary/period found footage piece. We start with a familiar scene – an impending exorcism taking place in a dimly-lit, possibly subterranean scientific facility – that naturally goes pear-shaped and are then introduced to the...

That's right, 19 movie clips from Randall Miller's Cbgb which follows the story of Hilly Kristal's New York club from its origins as Country, Bluegrass and Blues (Cbgb) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock 'n roll and punk. Hilly had one demand of the acts he booked, they could only play their own original music. No top 40's, no covers. It was the credo he lived by, support the artist at whatever the cost. Kristal, a fan of Country and Bluegrass dreamed of having a club in the lower Eastside that catered to that kind of music, when he had difficulty booking those bands he turned to other kinds of rock music.

Today’s poster shows actress Malin Akerman (Watchmen, The Proposal) as frontwoman Debbie Harry, of the band Blondie. On the Cbgb website, owner Hilly Kristal, addressed questions regarding what Cbgb stands for. Kristal said: ”It stands for the kind of music I intended to have, but not the kind of music that we became famous for: Country Bluegrass Blues.”

It's hard to imagine Alan Rickman as anyone other than Severus Snape, but after seeing the British actor on the set of the upcoming "Cbgb" film, we're starting to think that he could have made an excellent Mr. Weasley.
"Cbgb," which chronicles the famous New York City music venue during the burgeoning punk rock scene of the 1970s, is currently filming in Savannah, Ga. Lucky residents have had the pleasure of spotting Rickman, sporing a curly red wig, on set. Now, you may need to squint your eyes -- and grab a magnifying glass -- but one Twitter user tweeted the following photo of Rickman, as legendary Cbgb owner Hilly Kristal, from the set:

The final pieces of the Cbgb cast are now falling into place, with the news that Twilight star Ashley Greene is in final talks to star as Lisa Kristal. To all intents and purposes the female lead in the impressive ensemble, the character is the daughter of Hilly Kristal, the owner of the famous musical nightspot, who's being played by Alan Rickman.Variety report that the screenplay has Lisa in frequent conflict with her old man, before the final detente that sees her taking on the mantle of the club's business manager. A law-school graduate, Lisa was able to help keep the club afloat until it closed its doors for the final time in 2008.Cbgb stood for Country, Bluegrass and Blues, but it was Punk and New Wave that made the club's name, and the Manhattan hang-out became a crucial hub for bands like The Ramones, The Misfits, The Cramps and Talking Heads.

Most actors can point to a particular role they'd love to play, or a play they've always dreamed of acting in. For Matias Ponce, that play was "Short Eyes," the 1975 Tony Award winner written by Miguel Piñero during his incarceration for armed robbery. "When I was 16, I saw the film 'Piñero' about the playwright [Miguel Piñero]," Ponce remembers. "It's all about his life and what he went through when he was locked up, and how he started writing his plays. I got really hooked on the playwright and read 'Short Eyes' and realized there was a character I'd love the opportunity to play." Director Julian Acosta feels similarly excited about the play. "It's a kind of a seminal play in theater history," Acosta explains. "It's the first play by a Latino playwright ever to be produced on Broadway, and it's very rarely produced. It's one of those shows...

A reporter waiting for a meeting at a construction site is found dead. McGee (Sean Murray) has to take another polygraph test. Tony (Michael Weatherly) asks him why and here comes the oft used phrase again, "Don't ask, don't tell." Need to have that included at least a few times a season. Tony being funny as per usual, comments, "You didn't make a mistake about coming out did you?" How many times has Tony mentioned that about McGee now. McGee replies, "I don't have anything to come out about." Tony calls him "McQueen" and that this could end McGee's career. Always a scaremonger, our Tony. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) on the other hand, never took a polygraph. Just a thought what happened to the polygraphs the team were meant to be subjected to in season 4 finale Angel of Death. We didn't hear anything more about that. The dead Vic was Matt Burns (Julian Acosta) a blogger,...

Castle is one of those shows that proves – despite what we cynical bloggers say – that network execs do have a soft spot for a good story with good characters, even in the face of less than stellar numbers. Castle was written off by the bean-counters out here in the arm-chair ratings analysis corp, but ABC gave it another season anyways – and I'm sure nobody is complaining about being wrong. Nathan Fillion is seemingly hater-proof anyways, maybe you could accuse him of being too-likable, and Castle recalls enough Remington Steele with its updated pseudo-noir to be perfectly engrossing. Here is the lowdown on Castle's much anticipated September 7th premiere.
