Ever since The Orville wrapped up its third season all the way back in 2022, we've been dying for news of a follow-up. Dubbed The Orville: New Horizons, season 3 was such a step above everything that had come before that it was mind-blowing. Not only was it a great season of Seth MacFarlane's comedic sci-fi drama, it was also just one of the all-around best seasons of science fiction television of that year. Alas, it was also a big, expensive season of television that took more than two years to produce, and Hulu did not rush to give season 4 the green light.
But hope has remained alive for the past several years. Whenever The Orville comes up in interviews, its cast has kept that torch burning. Lead star and general creative force behind the series Seth MacFarlane (Ed Mercer) reassured fans in early 2024 that "the show is not dead," and...

There are a few shows or movies that set a standard and a template for a whole genre. HBO’s 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers not only did that for war dramas but also launched and boosted many acting careers. The series, created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, presented real-life events of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division throughout World War II.
The ensemble cast of Band of Brothers is one of the main reasons people still remember the show. Apart from playing the roles of soldiers, actors like Scott Grimes as Donald Malarkey, Kirk Acevedo as Joe Toye, and Damian Lewis as Richard Winters made the audience empathize with their losses and wins and connect with their camaraderie. Now, after more than two decades since its premiere, let’s catch up with some of these talented cast members and see what they are up to.

The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike lasted a whopping 148 days, becoming the second-longest strike in the labor union's history. From May 2 to Sept. 27, 2023, Hollywood writers were on strike after disputes with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) involving demands for higher pay and fair residuals, mandatory writer staffing, and protection from the threat of AI technologies. The strike impacted a slew of hit TV shows, including Abbott Elementary, Stranger Things, Saturday Night Live, The Handmaid's Tale, Severance, Hacks, and The Orville.
The Season 3 finale of the latter show premiered on Aug. 4, 2022, about nine months before the historic WGA strikes. From creator Seth MacFarlane (who donated a total of $6 million to the Entertainment Community Fund during the strikes), The Orville acts as a funny but heartfelt Star Trek spoof of sorts set 400 years in the future and follows the trials and tribulations of a starship crew, made up of both humans and aliens,...

Disney is leaving the famed Fox Studio Lot amid plans to centralize production teams in Burbank.

Sitcoms have a harder time than ever to really catch on to what the public wants. It's sort of a genre stable that viewers need a few seasons to get to know the characters and storylines they'll be enjoying. Unfortunately, the market is so competitive today that it's almost impossible for many new sitcoms to survive past one season. Many fresh and hilarious comedy shows have fallen by the wayside only because of low viewership, leading to a show's eventual premature cancelation. On top of that, no other sitcoms have it harder than the ones on network television, such as Fox's brand-new sitcom Going Dutch.
Going Dutch was created by Joel Church-Cooper and stars Denis Leary alongside a massive cast of hilarious characters in a show that seemingly fits Leary's charismatic and brash personality to a T. The show premiered right after the New Year on January 2, 2025, and was met with positive reviews.

Seth MacFarlane's The Orville has received high praise from Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Jonathan Frakes. A fan asked him about the parody series at this year's Indiana Comic Convention.
Reported by Collider, a fan asked Frakes, who played William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, his thoughts about Seth MacFarlane's beloved series. The Orville both parodies and pays homage to Star Trek and the Next Generation eras, while also taking inspiration from Star Wars to tell a sci-fi comedy story, with the crew of its space-ship going on serialized adventures. Frakes spoke highly of both MacFarlane and his work, saying, "Seth MacFarlane is arguably our biggest celebrity fan."
One of the reasons Frakes had such nice things to say about The Orville was due to the way MacFarlane utilized Star Trek veteran creatives for the series. "He hired Brannon Braga, who worked on a lot of our best stuff.

Galaxy Quest and The Orville are hard-hitting spoofs of Star Trek, but there are certainly no hard feelings from the cast of Gene Roddenberry's franchise. In fact, some of them are even big fans of the two. During Indiana Comic Convention's Star Trek: The Next Generation panel, Collider's Steve Weintraub broached the topic with Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Denise Crosby. He asked the trio what the sentiment was at the time when Galaxy Quest came out in 1999, a few years after The Next Generation had come to an end. Crosby was the first to share her thoughts: "It's perfect. It perfectly captures the essence [of Star Trek] with love and humor and intelligence...it's so well-crafted."...

During his stint playing Commander William Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Jonathan Frakes (seen above left) underwent a rudimentary director's boot camp. Frakes was interested in directing episodes of the show, and the producers said he would only be allowed to do so after shadowing other directors for 300 hours. Frakes put in his due diligence, and he ended up directing eight episodes of the series. The producers were so impressed that they also hired Frakes to direct two of the "Star Trek" feature films.
His directorial experience on "Next Generation," he found, could be parlayed into other directing gigs. For one, he remained with the "Star Trek" franchise for decades, coming back to helm episodes of "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," "Discovery," "Strange New Worlds," and "Picard." He directed the family friend sci-fi adventure film "Clockstoppers" in 2002 and "Thunderbirds" in 2004, eventually moving exclusively into television, overseeing episodes of "Leverage,...

The fate of The Orville remains undecided. After three seasons, it could all be over in a blink of an eye. Still, if all we got were three seasons, then what a wonderful three seasons it was. The series won over fans by embracing the core concepts of Star Trek. Granted, it was with a humorous twist most times, but the idea of pushing for a brighter future while also pushing important cultural conversations was straight out of the Star Trek playbook.
The fact that The Orville so lovingly modeled itself after the prime years of Star Trek (1987-2005), and the shows that came with it isn't some random act. Many of the men and women who worked on those iconic shows 20 to 30-odd years ago were brought in by Seth MacFarlane to help launch and mold The Orville into a spiritual successor to all of those wonderful Star Trek shows of the 80s,...

Some of history's most successful animated shows have taken it upon themselves to go a step further and tell stories in a feature-length format. "The Simpsons" and "Bob's Burgers" created their own movies. "South Park" went "Bigger, Longer and Uncut" on the big screen, and dipped into movies again years later when they planned 14 films for Paramount+. Even "Futurama" sent the Planet Express team on four cinematic adventures before those were split up and turned into a sixth season. However, while all these animated escapades have transpired over the years, one beloved animated sitcom, complete with a homicidal infant and crude cutaways, has refrained from the same treatment. "Family Guy" still hasn't had a proper movie, but it's not for a lack of trying. According to show creator Seth MacFarlane, it's simply because his schedule is too jam-packed to send the Griffins off on a whirlwind adventure that would require a movie ticket.

We talk about Star Trek-inspired properties a lot over on our site. We mention The Orville, Galaxy Quest, and other Star Trek-themed, or inspired shows. Yet, one that we don't talk about a lot is the horror-anthology series, Black Mirror.
A modern-day Twilight Zone, Black Mirror does all the same things that the iconic Twilight Zone used to do, just with more emphasis on technology than the 1960s horror series used to. The cultural examinations, the lessons, and the concepts are pretty universal across both shows and Black Mirror mostly does an excellent job of filling in where Twilight Zone left off.
Despite Black Mirror not being anywhere close to a Star Trek clone on its own, season four brought forth an episode that caught many Star Trek fans by surprise. The episode was called USS Callister, and it featured Jesse Plemons as the standard, James Kirk-stand in character.

The Orville is one of the best pieces of science fiction going today. Whether or not it gets a fourth season, the show's legacy has been cemented. It's funny, it's poignant and it's not afraid to do what Star Trek used to do quite a bit, and tackle serious questions. Topics like gender-affirming care, social media's toxic influence, addiction, and so many other conversations have all been had in this show. A show that is quite honestly a parody, and love-letter to the world of Star Trek.
It's actually one of the biggest compliments that the show routinely gets from Star Trek fans; it feels like a Star Trek show. That's not by accident, they've intentionally brought on numerous figures both behind the scenes and in front of the camera to come in and help with the franchise. Due to that, it has a very Star Trek vibe. Well, the...

Seth MacFarlane is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, particularly in the TV space. As the creator of long-running shows such as "Family Guy" and "American Dad," his creations are now fixtures of the pop culture landscape. But even heavy-hitters miss every once in a while. Riding high at arguably the biggest moment in his career, the network seemed to think it couldn't lose. What it wound up with was an unrivaled critical misfire.

Star Trek is a franchise that is one of the most important in the history of television, particularly in how it was able to essentially create a subgenre of TV that took many of the rhythms of police procedurals and mapped them onto a utopian science fiction setting. What resulted was a series that appealed to multiple generations of fans, who were able to hop into any single episode of the series without needing much prior context and enjoy Star Trek as an episodic drama.

Ted fans can get ready for more adventures with the drug-taking, foul-mouthed bear, as Seth MacFarlane has revealed that filming on the second season has now wrapped. While this is great news, it does not mean that we will be seeing the results on screen just yet, as those who remember Ted’s first season will recall several months of post-production work being required to bring its titular character to life.
However, MacFarlane was delighted to share an update on the series’ continued production, with an X/Twitter post in which he said:
"Today we wrap production on Ted Season 2! Thanks to our stellar writers, cast, and crew for all their amazing work on the funniest season yet!"
Ted is a prequel series to MacFarlane’s popular movie franchise, and goes back in time to when John Bennett (played by Mark Walhberg in the movies and Max Burkholder in the...

It's not surprising that a show created by Seth MacFarlane would feature big name stars, and his Star Trek homage The Orville is certainly packed with celebrity appearances, from Charlize Theron to Ted Danson. But there’s a huge Hollywood star whose cameo in the second season may have passed you by.
In the seventh episode of season 2, "Deflectors," an envoy from the planet Moclus comes aboard the Orville to escort one of their top engineers, Locar (Kevin Daniels), who is there to help the ship's engineering team upgrade its deflectors. This makes things awkward for the Orville crew member Bortus (Peter Macon), another Moclan and Locar's ex.
And Bortus isn’t the only crew member having troubles with failed love affairs. Having ended a relationship with on-board teacher Cassius (Chris Johnson) at the start of the episode, First Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrienne Palicki) finds herself the recipient of a...

Galaxy Quest remains one of the best Star Trek-inspired parodies out there. It's funny, witty, touches on reality a lot, and does a great job of depicting life in the Star Trek fandom without being mean-spirited or unkind. The acting is fantastic, the story is tight and it's largely everything you'd ever want from a movie. Star Trek or otherwise.
Yet, after 25 years, we've gotten nothing. We've heard rumors of a new Galaxy Quest-themed show, but with the passing of Alan Rickman and Tim Allen now leading a hit new sitcom with Kat Dennings, it looks like a revival, sequel or spinoff may not happen.
But it should. And it could. Galaxy Quest started off as a Star Trek parody, but with the arrival of shows like The Orville, it's clear that Star Trek fans want more than just Star Trek. At the very least, they want more Star Trek,...

In case it wasn't obvious from his sci-fi comedy show "The Orville," TV guru Seth MacFarlane is a huge, huge Trekkie. "The Orville," in its construct, lighting, and character types, very much resembles "Star Trek: The Next Generation," just with a few crass jokes and flippant commentary added throughout. MacFarlane also once presented William Shatner, in character as Captain Kirk, on a big screen at the Academy Awards. Some might even know about the "Star Trek" fan film that MacFarlane made back in high school, wherein he cast himself as Captain Kirk.
His Trekkie credentials don't end there. On one of the "Next Generation" Blu-rays, MacFarlane hosted a commentary track for the episode "Cause and Effect," talking to the episode's writer, Brannon Braga. He was also in the documentary "Trek Nation," and has included myriad "Star Trek" references in his animated sitcoms "Family Guy," "American Dad!," and "The Cleveland Show.

Star Trek is a brand that has influenced the world of science fiction for decades. They've helped create and influence other franchises for years. Due to this, some franchises and films have popped up that took the Star Trek formula and gave it their own twist. The most recent iteration of this trend is The Orville, a show some of you may be quick to tie to Star Trek.
Yet, before there was the Orville, there was Galaxy Quest. If The Orville is a show that is telling untold stories from within the Star Trek universe, but with a comedic twist, then Galaxy Quest is about the lives of those actors.
Starring Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, a William Shatner stand-in, the movie follows the cast of Galaxy Quest, a show that ended its run some 20 years before the start of the film. The show is still beloved all this time later,...

Seth MacFarlane is now (and perhaps always will be) best known as the man behind his massive animated hit shows "Family Guy" and "American Dad." MacFarlane's creations now rival the likes of "The Simpsons" and "South Park" in terms of longevity and staying power in pop culture. But MacFarlane is more than that, as evidenced by his live-action love letter to "Star Trek" aka "The Orville."
The series, which as of this writing has run for a total of three seasons, premiered on Fox in 2017. "The Orville" later moved to Hulu for its third season, which arguably changed the show for the better but that's another issue entirely. During the show's second season when it was still on Fox, it actually featured a cameo from none other than action maestro Bruce Willis. That said, viewers would be forgiven for not noticing him.

Resident Alien stands out as a tasty blend of quirky humor, offbeat storytelling, and heartfelt moments amidst its sci-fi backdrop – and there are more shows like it out there. Resident Alien stars Alan Tudyk as Harry Vanderspeigle, a flawed, genocidal alien who poses as a small-town Colorado doctor and eventually becomes sympathetic to the human cause.
The show dives into everything from offbeat human interactions to larger existential matters. Whether it’s the off-kilter small-town atmosphere, clever humor, or supernatural storylines, there are a handful of sci-fi comedy shows that capture a similar balance likely to tick all the right boxes with Resident Alien viewers.

Joaquin Phoenix leads the Beau is Afraid cast in one of the wildest roles of his career, but he is also backed by an outstanding cast that pulls him through his surreal story. Written and directed by Ari Aster, the filmmaker who brought audiences Hereditary and Midsommar, Beau is Afraid follows Beau Wasserman (Phoenix), an anxious, fearful man who has a complicated relationship with his mother Mona. After her death, Beau goes on a journey of self-discovery and realization as he attempts to get home in time for her funeral.
Aster’s latest, and most challenging movie yet, isn’t exactly a horror in the same way its predecessors are, but there is still a sense of unease that permeates Beau is Afraid. The film Aster takes Beau down an intriguing, strange, and complex path filled with colorful and absurd characters. A new 2024 Netflix comedy series staring Cheers star Ted Danson is now the Number 1 TV show on the platform's global streaming chart this week. Danson's most well-known role is as Sam Malone in the '80s and '90s sitcom, having been on the cast of Cheers from the beginning, all the way to the end of the show in season 11. He was nominated for and won multiple awards in the role, including Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1990 and 1993. Its success led to the recently-revived Frasier as well.
However, he's also been recognized for his role in later works, with his roles as Michael in The Good Place and Hank in Fargo season 2 being his most recognizable characters in recent years. He's also had a recurring role as Admiral Perry in The Orville and starred as Mayor Neil Bremer in the short-lived Mr. Mayor.

Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2

Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.
Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.
Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

Seth MacFarlane is most famous for creating (and voice acting in) crass comedy cartoons like "Family Guy" and "American Dad." His love for animation was sparked by primetime TV's first cartoon sitcom, "The Flintstones," but animation is not MacFarlane's only passion -- he also loves show tunes and musicals.
Indeed, MacFarlane's all-time favorite movie is "The Sound of Music," Robert Wise's 1965 musical epic starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. As he put it to Wired when revealing his favorite film, "Can you believe that? Who would've thought? 'The Sound of motherf***ing Music.'"
"The Sound of Music" adapted the 1959 stage musical of the same name, which itself was based on the true story of the Austrian Von Trapp family, a family of singers who escaped their Nazi-conquered homeland in 1938. I have very sad news to report tonight. It has been announced that Tony Todd has died at the age of 69. The legendary actor is best known for his roles in Candyman, Final Destination, Platoon, The Crow, Night of the Living Dead, and his many appearances in the Star Trek franchise. He was a massively talented actor whose incredible baritone voice made every project so much better. This is a huge blow.
Todd’s wife, Fatima, told THR that he died on Wednesday at his home in Marina del Rey after a long illness. New Line Cinema, the studio which produces the Final Destination franchise, wrote on Instagram: “The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony, -Your Final Destination Family.“

Some comedy shows take a while to get into their rhythm, but others manage to hook their audiences from the very first episode. It can take writers and actors some time to find the comedic flavor of a new show. Comedy relies so much on chemistry and timing that a perfect comedic pilot is rare. These things can take a long time to build up. However, some hilarious shows capture lightning in a bottle from their first outing.
There are many great comedy shows which started off a little slowly. Seinfeld, for example, has an odd first season that doesn't quite nail the comedic rhythms that the show is known for, and The Office takes some time to distinguish itself from its British counterpart. Not all comedy shows suffer from the same affliction, however. Shows like Futurama, How I Met Your Mother and Derry Girls hit the ground running.

Speaking on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (sometimes) podcast on Sirius Xm, Danson offered a mea culpa to Grammer, his special guest. According to Danson, he felt he got "stuck" with Grammer during their time on Cheers and remembers getting angry at him for an unspecified reason. I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the Cheers years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once," he said, to which Grammer replied, Yeah, you came and told me that one day, without getting specific. Danson then added, Its stuck in both of our memories.

If William Adama found his legs aching in Battlestar Galactica, he can blame the likes of James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. While Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek are two very different franchises, their spiritual connection can be felt within the myriad of sci-fi tropes shared between them. The inter-franchise bond is even stronger because of one Ronald D. Moore. The brains behind Battlestar Galactica's 2004 reboot series, Moore first cut his sci-fi teeth on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in addition to a brief stint on Star Trek: Voyager.
Naturally, then, a hefty dose of Battlestar Galactica's DNA was carried over from Gene Roddenberry's universe, but as much as Star Trek informed what Battlestar Galactica was, it also informed what Battlestar Galactica was not. I always like to hear that another horror / Western blend is in the works – so I was glad to see The Hollywood Reporter announce that the folk horror thriller The Wolf and the Lamb, which is set “during the western expansion of the 1870s,” is coming our way. Cassandra Scerbo of the Sharknado franchise and Adrianne Palicki of The Orville star in the film, which is currently in production, with filming taking place in Montana.
The Wolf and the Lamb marks the feature writing and directing debut of Michael Schilf. Scerbo is taking on the role of a widowed school teacher searching for her only son, who is the latest child to go missing in a tight-knit mining camp. But when the son miraculously returns, he is more monster than man.

Many fans of Seth MacFarlane's hit sci-fi parody still wonder why Halston Sage left The Orville. Halston Sages Orville crewmember Lieutenant Alara Orville's chief of security was responsible for the safety of the starship's crew, starting out inexperienced but evolving into a more than capable lieutenant throughout the first season. Alara Kitan also possessed superhuman strength, which was a product of her home planet of Xelaya having a high gravitational pull. This proved against nefarious aliens like Dorahlian zealot Hamelac (Robert Knepper) or Krill spy Derek Ashton (Sean Cook). Unfortunately, it was Alaras unique Xelayan super-strength that led to her departure from the USS Orville crew.
In The Orville's season 2 episode Home, Alara discovered she was gradually becoming weaker as her body adjusted to lower gravity, which required her to return to Xelaya to re-acclimatize and regain her strength. Alara then reconnected with her family who had previously...

Paramount Pictures remake of The Naked Gun has been pushed back by the studios. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the reboot starring Liam Neeson as Detective Frank Drebin, the role originated by the late Leslie Neilsen in the 1988 movie, will be released Aug. 1, 2025. The film originally had a July 18, 2025, release date. The first Naked Gun movie, Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! spawned two sequels, 1991's Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun: 33 1/3: The Final Insult from 1994.

The Orville is one of the most perfect complimentary shows for Star Trek fans. Originally envisioned as a comedic take on Star Trek, the show slowly evolved into a Star Trek clone, resembling a series from the 1990s. Just with some humor in it. The series has been around since 2017 but hasn't had a new season since 2022 and fans have only gotten three seasons across those seven years.
A potential fourth season remains a significant possibility, and one we're all hoping for. Yet, with the departure of Adrianne Palicki following season three, it seems like The Orville is set for a brand new era should it return. Citing the slow-shooting pace of the series, and the way that affects her and her coworker's ability to get other jobs, Palicki opted to leave the show.
She wouldn't be the first original crew member to leave, with Halston Sage leaving during season two.

There's been no official announcement that the Seth MacFarlane-created sci-fi series, The Orville, has been renewed for a fourth season, but there have been reports from unofficial sources that it is, indeed, happening.
According to Space.com, at Star Trek Las Vegas, Scott Grimes confirmed that the fourth season of the series is set to begin pre-production in 2025. On top of that, The Planetary Union Network which is The Orville's official fan podcast posted on Reddit that Grimes' announcement was true.
Seth [MacFarlane, the show's creator] hasn't made an official announcement on any of his direct social media, but we do work directly for production/him. S4 is happening. No one can give an accurate timeline on when it will release yet, though."
And following up with that, Colin Krapp, who is the administrator for The Orville fan group on Facebook, which has over 70,000 members, gave a shout out to Scott Grimes and a...
