Let’s go, Ms. Teagues! Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson will host Saturday Night Live on April 1, marking her hosting debut on the venerated NBC show. SNL announced the news on Twitter, adding that Lil Yachty will be that episode’s musical guest in the Grammy-nominated rapper’s own SNL debut. Brunson, of course, is no stranger to comedy, as the creator and star of Abbott Elementary, a hit sitcom for ABC. But she’s also no stranger to sketch comedy: Before Abbott, Brunson starred in the first season of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show. Her other TV credits include roles in Miracle Workers, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Party Down, and History of the World: Part II. She also had voice roles in Magical Girl Friendship Squad, Lazor Wulf, Big Mouth, and Harley Quinn. Quinta and Lil Yachty! pic.twitter.com/QYLO0UqYzG — Saturday Night Live...

At the end of Mel Brooks' 1981 sketch comedy film "History of the World, Part I" (a movie /Film once ranked higher than "The Producers"), the director included a preview for the inevitable sequel and some of the segments that might be seen therein. Whereas Brooks explored the Stone Age, Ancient Rome, and Revolutionary France in "Part I," "Part II" was to feature a Viking funeral, "Hitler on Ice," and the distant future of "Jews in Space." In 2023, the mythic second part finally came to fruition — as a six-part miniseries — with the 96-year-old Brooks writing and producing along with an entire team of the comedy world's biggest stars. Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinhotlz, Nick Kroll, and David Stassen are credited as the primary writers, and the sketches are presented in shorter snippets, skipping merrily back and forth in time.

The best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the tablets. Moses descending from the mountaintop, bearing 15 commandments, only to drop one of the three in his armful, is as simple and elegant as you can get. It’s in Mel Brooks’ delivery, but it’s also in the way that punchline plays in any area. Any era, from vaudeville to Vine, gets an equal shot at that laugh.
Arguably, the second best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the quick epilogue that smushes together slices of ideas as a test case for what a potential sequel might have looked like. The stuff wedged into the end of that 1981 movie is weirder, more abstract, and, yes, shorter. For decades, the fact that “Part 2” never came only made it funnier in its own way.

(Welcome to The Weekly Watchlist, a feature where we program everything you need to stream this week. In this edition: "History of the World, Part II" takes center stage, but we also offer up some silly comedies and less-silly historical epics to stream.)
The Series: "History of the World, Part II"
Where You Can Stream It: Hulu
The Pitch: Over four decades after the original sketch comedy movie "History of the World, Part I," legendary funnyman Mel Brooks is back to pay off on the tongue-in-cheek promise of that dangling subtitle. Nobody ever really thought we'd receive a follow-up to the 1981 film -- let alone one that's a whopping 40 years later, debuting as a series on a streaming service, and spearheaded by the same director who is now a sprightly 96 years young. February is over, and March is here at last! The days are getting longer, and though it may not seem like it quite yet, warmer weather and greener lawns are finally nearly here. Heck, the MLB season is now just a few weeks away, with Opening Day set for March 30.
But for many across the United States, this dream of spring is just that. To those with snow still in the short-term forecast, talk of warmth and good weather is but a mockery, a tease to torment the mind while the cold flakes fly. If you’re stuck inside and desperate for a distraction, we’ve got a list of new shows and movies coming to streaming this week that will help you preserve your sanity for at least a little longer.

As the American treasure himself says in the opening credits, Mel Brooks is a hero to some, and merely a legend to others. He broke ground in irreverent social commentary with Blazing Saddles, and rewired the knobs in the monster’s brain for Young Frankenstein. Brooks’ Hulu TV-sketch-series-masquerading-as-a-film-sequel throws more jokes at the viewer than almost any comedy in the History of The World, Part II. Not all of them land squarely, though the ricochets inflict sufficient comic collateral damage.
There is a lot we can learn from an anthology sketch series. All of which is graded on a curveball. Like History of the World, Part I, the series is made up of short gags, like Marco Polo’s (Jake Johnson) impromptu gift-exchange on his first trip to China, longer one-off sequences, and a few continuing stories. Over 40 years after "History of the World Part I" hit theaters, a sequel is finally arriving in the form of a TV series on Hulu. Appropriately titled "History of the World Part II," the series follows in the footsteps of the legendary Mel Brooks by looking back at history with a contemporary comedic lens. Taking cues from the original movie, the series jumps around to different historical periods and events, such as the Biblical times of Jesus Christ, the unfolding of the Russian Revolution, the struggles of ending the Civil War, and many more. While some of the sketches are ongoing threads spread across eight episodes, there are also smaller bits involving Noah's Ark, Kublai Kahn, William Shakespeare, and Galileo.
What's great about "History of the World Part II" (watch the trailer here) is how it combines the classic style of Mel Brooks comedies with the contemporary humor of its creators.

History of the World, Part II began with a call from Mel Brooks to Nick Kroll.
“It’s the craziest thing in my life,” Kroll recalls, adding, “Mel Brooks is more important to me than anybody, so to get that call was like an out-of-body experience.” From there, Kroll reached out to Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz and his writing partner David Stassen. Together, the foursome, with Brooks, have hatched an update to Brooks’ seminal 1981 film, The History of the World, Part 1. Now, 42 years later, Part II will make its debut on Hulu as a four-night, eight episode event beginning March 6.
Like its predecessor, the sketch series offers its audience a tour through history, though this time the 96-year-old Brooks stars alongside Kroll, Sykes, Barinholtz and a who’s who of guest stars. His face is only seen in CGI jokes atop various buff bodies, but the legendary clown Mel Brooks (now 96) is the shameless guiding spirit of History of the World, Part II, a rollicking eight-part sequel to his 1981 sketch-comedy romp through world history. Like Brooks, who narrates and is an executive producer along with series stars Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz, the Hulu series (two episodes a night) will do anything and roast any sacred cow for a laugh. Best to tone up your (running) gag reflex, because it’s going to get a workout. The grin-to-groan ratio varies from scene to scene, but the pace is so fast and the punchlines so frequent it hardly matters. At its best, and worst, it’s like a Mad Magazine parody come to life. Hulu Contemporary comics Kroll, Barinholtz, and Sykes lead viewers through recurring segments on the Civil War, the...

It’s been nearly three decades since Mel Brooks released a feature film (1995’s “Dracula: Dead and Loving It”). He’s done some sporadic voice and TV work since then, including adapting “Spaceballs” into an animated series, but the 96-year-old legend has come out of his semi-retirement to produce his biggest project in a generation in the event series for Hulu, “History of the World, Part II.” Picking up with the same irreverent tone as the 1981 film, this 8-episode sketch comedy almost works like a collection of Brooks films cut together into episodic form in that there are recurring sketches that tell a full story.

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

“Most good sequels take at least 40 years to make,” joked executive producer Nick Kroll of his follow-up to 1981 Mel Brooks film History of the World, Part I. And indeed, 42 years later, History of the World, Part II has arrived from the team of Brooks, Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes and David Stassen, featuring a variety of sketches lampooning different periods of human history.
Brooks called Kroll with the idea of revisiting the project, which the star told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.A. premiere on Monday was “not only one of the highlights of my career, but really one of the highlights of my life. Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.
With the possible exception of the Airplane! guys, nobody knows this better than Mel Brooks. There are jokes in Blazing Saddles that fall flat. You mostly don’t remember them, because so much of it is still a riot. And because so much of Dracula: Dead and Loving It is stagnant, the few punchlines that land are rarely mentioned.
As Mel Brooks spoofs go, 1981’s History of the World, Part I is right in the middle. It has great bits — I quote “It is said that the people are revolting.” “You said it. They stink on ice!” in my head at least once a week — and flailing duds and stretches I think were memorable that...

History of the World, Part I is far from the most beloved Mel Brooks movie, even if “It’s good to be the king” is one of the more enduring lines he ever wrote. It is, however, by far the most in need of a sequel. After all, it’s been 42 years since Brooks concluded the film with teasers for History of the World, Part II, which was to include the sketches “Hitler on Ice,” “A Viking Funeral,” and, most memorably, “Jews in Space.” Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are stone-cold classics,...

Mel Brooks is one of the few remaining living legends in pop culture to have survived so many generational shifts. He started as a comedy writer in the earliest days of television, helped shape and transform modern movie humor, and eventually ended up creating a sea change on Broadway as well with an adaptation of "The Producers," one of his first movies. And now, more than seven full decades after he started in TV, Brooks is back on the small screen, as glimpsed in the opening of the Hulu limited series "History of the World, Part II." But true to form, the Brooks we get a glimpse of is a joke in and of itself: it's a very "swole" Brooks (Aka a bodybuilder with a de-aged version of Brooks' face slapped in front of his own visage). It's a microcosm of this sketch series, as shameless and crass and incredibly funny as Brooks' own work.

It’s good to be the king! And it’s great to see Mel Brooks’ iconic farce finally getting the raunchy, riotous follow-up fans have been wanting since 1981 in History of the World, Part II. “We wanted to honor the film but also really honor Mel,” says David Stassen, who executive produces the eight-episode hoot with the legendary comic as well as Ike Barinholtz (The Afterparty), Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), and Wanda Sykes (The Upshaws). They succeeded. In the sequel series, which rolls out over four nights (March 6 through March 9 on Hulu), Brooks’ narration introduces historical vignettes with the same side-splitting mix of high- and low-brow humor, sight gags, and sly social commentary. Sketches that skewer the Civil War, the Russian Revolution, Shirley Chisholm’s presidential bid, and the story of Jesus provide the backbone of Part II, recurring throughout the season. Some of the stand-alone topics: Noah’s Ark, Freud,...

Exclusive: The wild story of crypto couple Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan is headed to the screen. Hulu is in early development on the limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, from Searchlight Television. Lily Collins (Emily In Paris) is set to star as Morgan in the project, which she is producing with Charlie McDowell, who is slated to direct, and Alex Orlovsky.
The trio also produced Windfall, directed by McDowell with Collins starring opposite Jesse Plemons and Jason Segel. The film was released earlier this year on Netflix.
Based on the New York magazine article “The Many Lives of Crypto’s Most Notorious Couple,” the series focuses on Lichtenstein and Morgan, tipped to be either the masterminds behind one of the largest heists in history or a pair of hapless wannabe entrepreneurs who somehow stumbled onto a hard drive containing 3.6 billion in Bitcoin stolen from the Finex exchange.
