After 13 long years, Britney Spears's conservatorship finally came to an end on Nov. 12, 2021. The ruling came from Judge Brenda Penny, who deemed the conservatorship was "no longer required." The decision arrived after Britney's father, Jamie Spears, was suspended as her conservator that September.
On June 23, 2021, Britney addressed the court about terminating her conservatorship, which had largely been in control of her life since 2008. As the pop star shared her story, including the heartbreaking and "abusive" treatment she received over the years, a handful of Britney's former costars, friends, and family voiced support for her.
Now, nearly two years later, Spears looks back on that tumultuous time of her life in a new tell-all memoir, "The Woman in Me," out Oct. 24. Per an excerpt obtained by People published on Oct. 17, Spears reveals in her book that she "became a robot" during her conservatorship. "But not just a robot - a sort of child-robot,...

Troubled musicals, like troubled friendships, can often seem like defeats lying in wait, sponging up every last second of loving care, effort and good intention. So Maria Friedman’s smartly tended production of that most troubled of stage properties, the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth backwards musical Merrily We Roll Along deserves all the applause – and ticket-buying business – it’s getting at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre.
Opening tonight, the musical is drawing rapturous audience responses, no doubt in large part because of the splendid performances by three very appealing stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez.
But even if we could, for the sake of argument, put the talents of this delightful trio singing some of Sondheim’s loveliest songs, aside for a moment, the undeniable charm of this production has to be credited to a sort of relief – the relief of knowing that, for the most part, Friedman...

We’re looking at cinema through a pair of pink-tinted glasses because Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is everywhere right now. The Margot Robbie-led caper is defying all expectations and looks poised to kickstart a Mattel Cinematic Universe that includes an upcoming Barney movie with Daniel Kaluuya.
This is far from the first Barbie movie we’ve had, but as well as being the first live-action outing, its meta take on the IP is grabbing headlines. With some 64 years of Barbie history to pull from, the script has gotten away with weaving in some of the toy line’s many controversies.
Barbie has faced controversies of its own since its box office-smashing debut, such as an enraged minority of audience members calling out the movie “anti-men” propaganda. While Gerwig’s film continues to enjoy box office success, here are the real-life Barbie doll controversies that...

Noah Cyrus, 23, has hit back at the hateful comments over her appearance following her engagement announcement to fashion designer Pinkus.
“Since I’ve announced something so pure and happy for me and my life the internet and commenters have been working so hard to take the joy, love and happiness from me,” the pop singer wrote on Thursday in two posts to her Instagram Story.
The message comes three days after some online trolls were calling her “ugly” and “commenting on my face and body as you all did when I was just 11-12 years old… when I was still forming my brain.”
Cyrus also wrote that this online criticism led to her believing she “didn’t deserve to live” while growing up. She recalled how she became suicidal and dependent on drugs as a result. But she said she is now in a place where comments can no longer cause her to hurt herself.

Set in Yanji, a border city in the north of China, The Breaking Ice follows the blossoming relationship among three young adults in their twenties over a short few days of heavy winter snowfall.

Actress Lauren Ash is a thief. Before you call the cops, it’s scenes that this “Not Dead Yet” star is stealing. Every scene she is in — whether on this ABC sitcom or her last one, NBC’s “Superstore” — she owns. And rightfully so. Her privileged, pretentious Lexi has some daddy issues to sort out in order to break through that haughty shell of hers.
In this week’s “Not Dead Yet,” Ash’s Lexi conducts the employees’ yearly performance review at the SoCal Independent, revealing that she’s not as uncaring as many (aka most) people think she is. And when it comes to the bad personal relationship habits she has learned from her father, well, sometimes they work like magic — when she wants to get back at him.

Charlotte Church has reflected on Chris Moyles offering to take her virginity when she was 16 in comparison to the “more underground” misogyny of 2023.
Church rose to fame as a classical singer as a child, before going on to pursue a career in pop music in the mid Noughties.
In 2002, Moyles, who was then presenting BBC Radio 1’s drive-time show, offered to take the singer’s virginity, saying that he wanted to “lead her through the forest of sexuality now she had reached 16”.
Church, 37, makes an appearance on Kathy Burke: Growing Up, a new documentary for Channel 4 exploring the subject of ageing, in which Church opened up about the public reaction to her changing as she got older.
“It felt like it started to get dark when you were basically reaching puberty, that’s when they started to write about you differently,” Burke says, in a clip obtained by Metro.

‘Abbott Elementary’ Valentine’s Day Episode Woos Ratings Win Over CBS’ Super Bowl Commercial Special
ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” Valentine’s Day-themed episode was able to woo the 18-49 demographic on Wednesday, per Nielsen live plus same-day figures, in the mockumentary comedy’s first ratings win of the TV season. However, viewers still swooned over CBS’ Super Bowl Commercial Special, which had the highest average viewership of the night and was a close second to the Quinta Brunson-starring title’s demo win.
At 9 p.m., right after the early series premiere of the Gina Rodriguez dramedy “Not Dead Yet,” “Abbott Elementary” averaged a primetime night high with 0.56 in the demo. The episode, which saw Brunson’s Janine and Tyler James Williams’ Gregory inch closer to the highly anticipated romantic conclusion of their will-they-won’t-they arc, also netted 3.2 average million viewers overall. That was up by 50 from last week’s rerun installment last week.

A memory, even a very happy one, can be tinged with sadness after the fact — especially when viewed in a new light. This is the underlying spirit of "Aftersun," the debut feature film from Scottish writer-director Charlotte Wells. The project is clearly a very personal one; the film drifts along at a dreamy, quiet pace, slowly unraveling its story about an unforgettable vacation, framed like a collection of memories held together by home movies, photographs, and souvenirs.
The bulk of Wells' film focuses on young father Calum (Paul Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio). Calum and Sophie's mother have long since broken up; he isn't in his daughter's life as much as he'd like to be, so he treats their alone time together vacationing at a Turkish resort as a precious — if fleeting — opportunity. Sophie is the typical, precocious kid on the cusp of puberty. She's mildly embarrassed by Calum,...

When Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg and Nicole Galovski co-founded the production company Culture House four years ago, they insisted that their business stand out in Hollywood as an inclusive network of creatives that advocates for “healthy competition” and a community-based approach to filmmaking.
Already, the trio’s efforts are bearing fruit. In the past, Disney+ Day has landed in November, but this year it’s hitting this week – right before the D23 Expo gets underway in Anaheim, California (across the street from Disneyland). Thursday, September 8, to be exact.

Brie Larson opened up about the personal meaning behind her new docuseries, "Growing Up," in an Aug. 3 Disney+ virtual panel at the TCA summer press tour. The show follows a cohort of young adults, focusing on one person's story in each episode. With episodes that cover everything from grief to first loves, "Growing Up" has something for everyone. For Larson, who executive produced the show and directed one episode, the universal nature of shame inspired her to make the series.
"I realized that I was living with shame about who I was, and I was noticing how I was presenting myself to the world - either shielding certain parts of myself, and living in fear," she said. "And I was like, if I'm feeling this way, I'm feeling this way. . . That set me on this path, for years, of asking people who I was close to: What do you feel shameful about?...

It may not feel terribly fall-like outside yet, but the TV world is ready to flip seasons. After a few light weeks for premieres, the Sept. 7-13 period is notably busier: The NFL season begins, the Emmy Awards are on deck and there are a good number of season and series debuts across all platforms.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter‘s rundown of premieres, returns and specials over the next seven days. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but let THR point the way to worthy options for the coming week. All times are Et/Pt unless noted.

This month Disney will be hosting Disney+ Day, which means the streamer’s list of new releases for September 2022 is more jam-packed than usual.
Keeping with tradition, however, the biggest release this month is of the Marvel of Star Wars variety, with Star Wars taking its turn after Marvel did with She-Hulk in August. Prequel series Andor is set to premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 21 with three episodes. Starring Diego Luga as the titular rogue, Andor will take place in the time before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Disney has big plans for this property, with an uncommonly large 12-episode order set to run throughout the fall.
Some other big Disney franchises stake their claims with month with Pixar’s Cars on the Road and The Simpsons short “Welcome to the Club” both arriving on Sept. 8. Also premiering that day is the Robert Zemeckis film Pinocchio. Later on, Disney+ will...

Smriti Mundhra cannot be pigeonholed into one oeuvre. The creator of Netflix’s popular “Indian Matchmaking,” which released its second season recently, directed two episodes of Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever” for the same streamer, and a segment of Brie Larson’s upcoming Disney+ docuseries “Growing Up.” Her “Shelter” doc short on homelessness is nominated for a news and documentary Emmy, as part of HBO Max series “Through Our Eyes.”
Mundhra, whose father, Jagmohan, was also a filmmaker and ran the Culver City theater Meralta, took that name for her production company. “What I love about making films and this work is that it puts a human face on these kinds of big problems.”
Mundhra says viewers are drawn to “Indian Matchmaking” because it engages with topics that we don’t talk about a lot. “Some of it is cringey,” she says. “Some of the things we do...
