Revered documentarian duo Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker have been in the game long enough that putting together a reasonably engaging piece of work on an unlikely subject is old hat. In the same way, there have been enough documentaries about animal rights that audiences can accept nonhuman cognition and interiority as a given, without much need to rehash old scientific evidence. This is backed up in Unlocking the Cage, which includes a scene in which the characters discover a survey which shows that more than half of Americans believe to some degree that animals deserve at least some of the rights that come with personhood, rather than being relegated to the status of things for humans to do with as they please. In a straightforward but effective way, Hegedus and Pennebaker chronicle a multiyear effort to launch the first court case on behalf of a chimpanzee.

Breaking Through The Bars: Hegedus & Pennebaker Go Ape In Court With Animal Rights Activist Steven Wise
Having long ago been crowned the king and queen of the concert doc and the direct cinema political campaign, Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker have spent the last decade or so cinematically exploring new interests near and dear to their heart in the Meilleur Ouvrier de France in Kings of Pastry and animal rights with their latest, Unlocking The Cage. Quite possibly their most politically overt work as a pair, they’ve been following Steven Wise, an animal rights lawyer and president of the Nonhuman Rights Project, as he attempts to officially file for a writ of habeas corpus (literally meaning to free the body) in the name of several domestically imprisoned chimpanzees. The unheard of pretext for such a motion would render chimpanzees themselves a legal (rather than biological) person, and thus should...

If you cast a superficial glance at movie times and television schedules, you might think being a chef was just about rote culinary competitions and dudes hitting the road to get their fried food on. Jon Favreau is the latest to add to the trend with the indie charmer Chef, a film about a man who reconfigures his relationship with food by hitting the road in a food truck. It’s familiar material; television’s been giving us heaps of men hitting the road to please their taste buds for years from Feasting on Asphalt to the fan favorite Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. But of course, the world of chefs extends well beyond rumbling engines, fried foods, and manliness, and cinema’s modern crop of chef-centric documentaries is a great way to see the expanse of experiences and techniques that go into being a chef, as well as the fundamental basics they all share. Some...

Twenty years ago another recession was gripping America, documentarians were shooting on film, and D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus were immortalizing the election campaign of Bill Clinton. The renowned duo behind Kings of Pastry, Jimi Plays Monterey and many other films, is presenting The War Room at a 20th anniversary screening at Toronto’s Hot Docs Documentary Festival this week. “It was an idea we always wanted to do,” Hegedus told Filmmaker, “to see a man become President.” In 1960, Pennebaker gained valuable experience by co-editing and doing sound on the very first campaign doc, Primary by Robert Drew. With the presidential election just around the corner, The Criterion Collection has restored "The War Room," Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker's seminal behind-the scenes documentary on Bill Clinton's revolutionary (and winning) campaign for an extras-packed Blu-ray/DVD release. [Go Here for more Indiewire's Blu-ray/DVD picks of the week.] As the title suggest, "The War Room" doesn't center on Clinton, but on his crack team of consultants, including James Carville and George Stephanopoulos who went on to become media stars in their own rights shortly following Clinton's inauguration. Hegedus and Pennebaker, whose last film together was the 2009 cooking documentary "Kings of Pastry," caught up with Indiewire to discuss the continued relevance of "The War Room," revisiting their subjects 15 years later with their follow-up documentary "Return of the Wall Room" (included on the disc); and why...

James Carville campaigns in The War Room.
Directed by renowned cinema verité filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop) and Chris Hegedus (Kings of Pastry), the 1993 documentary film The War Room focuses on Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign.
The 1992 presidential election was a triumph not only for Clinton but also for the new breed of strategists who guided him to the White House and changed the face of politics in the process. In their behind-closed-doors account of the campaign, Pennebaker and Hegedus follow the brainstorming and bull sessions of Clinton’s crack team of consultants — especially the folksy James Carville and the preppy George Stephanopoulos, who became media stars in their own right as they injected a fresh spirit and spontaneity into the process of campaigning.

First Run Features announced today its acquisition of the award-winning documentary The Pruitt-igoe Myth from filmmaker Chad Freidrichs. First Run is planning a March 2012 theatrical launch with VOD, home video and television to follow. The deal was negotiated by Film Sales Company head Andrew Herwitz and First Run’s Marc Mauceri.
The Pruitt-igoe Myth tells the story of the transformation of the American city in the decades after World War II, through the lens of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing development and the St. Louis residents who called it home.
It began as a housing marvel. Built in 1956, Pruitt-Igoe was heralded as the model public housing project of the future, “the poor man’s penthouse.” Two decades later, it ended in rubble – its razing an iconic event that the architectual theorist Charles Jenks famously called the death of modernism. The footage and images of its implosion have helped to perpetuate a myth of failure,...

Following on the heels of big cousin Tiff, the Atlantic Film Festival may be smaller in scope but not in variety. Each year the film festival taking place in late September in Halifax, manages to strike a delicate balance between international arthouse and smaller, Canadian and even local films. Some of my favourites from last year’s festival included Mike Leigh’s quiet drama Another Year, Michael Goldbach’s appropriately dreamy Daydream Nation, Jacob Tierney’s follow up to his hit The Trotsky, Good Neighbours and legendary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker’s thrilling doc Kings of Pastry. While all engaging and dynamic films, they vary in subject matter, genre and scope. Some boast big names, others introduce us to previously unknown names but they were all found playing side-by-side at last year’s festival. After coming away from last year’s festival feeling positive about what it had to offer, I...

I've had someone point out that my time for "WWE: Raw" is apparently inaccurate for wherever they are twice now. I'd like to apologize, first of all, in case this individual missed the first hour of "Raw" when all the important plot lines are established and thus spent the second hour wondering why all these greasy men in swim trunks were throwing each other around the ring. I know that it's hard to follow the subtleties of such a show without all the information presented up front. However, I'd also like to remind all of you that whatever I put here is subject to local scheduling abnormalities and time zone weirdness. Most of the shows I list are listed by their Eastern time slots, so if you aren't blessed enough to live in the correct time zone then please always double check with a local source for anything you really don't want to miss.

For decades, director, producer, and cameraman D.A. Pennebaker has served as a peerless chronicler of the human condition and the artistic process in classics like Don’t Look Back, The War Room, and Monterey Pop. So it seems a little insulting, if not downright heretical, to complain that Kings Of Pastry, his latest collaboration with wife/longtime filmmaking partner Chris Hegedus, suffers because its subject matter overlaps considerably with the much-less-rarefied world of reality television. But it’s hard not to think of Kings Of Pastry as a PBS version of Top Chef: Masters. Kings Of Pastry follows Jacquy ...
