Indian restaurants in London’s Southall neighborhood kept Bollywood star Alia Bhatt happy while working on location for her Hollywood debut, “Heart of Stone.”
The 2023 Netflix thriller, directed by Tom Harper and co-starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, in which Bhatt plays globe-trotting hacker Keya Dhawan, spent two months shooting in London — a long time away from her usual haunts.
“I really needed Indian food,” she told Variety at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, where she is part of the “In Conversation” side-bar.
The crew “were telling [me] where all these spots are — Southall, where you have amazing Indian restaurants. They got me some Indian food that really sated my tummy. There are so many Indian restaurants in London that it made me much more comfortable.”

One of the highlights of the Busan International Film Festival is its Open Cinema section. Its free screenings take place in the Biff Theater, an outdoor venue with room for hundreds of spectators. This year’s program included Thomas Cailley’s French sci-fi The Animal Kingdom; Revolver Lily, a Japanese period thriller starring Haruka Ayase as a super-assassin; and the Bollywood musical Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani / Rocky and Rani’s Love Story.
Directed by Bollywood veteran Karan Johar, Rocky and Rani pits two top stars––Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh––in a screwball romance that unfolds on a massive scale. Singh is Rocky, a “filthy rich” heir to a laddoo pastry fortune. Bhatt’s Rani hosts a controversial talk show where she defends liberal causes.
You know the formula: meet-cute, enormous song and dance, stupid argument, another gigantic song, eventual reconciliation followed by an even bigger production number.

ReviewTrembling, vulnerable, and oscillating between standing up for herself and giving the marriage another chance, Aishwaya carries the film on her shoulders.Sowmya RajendranA hand lights candles slowly one by one, the flickering flame offering hope in the dark. At the end of it, we see Ammu’s glowing face. She’s the bride-to-be. Directed by Charukesh Sekar, Telugu film Ammu is a familiar story in society but not on screen. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the titular character, a young woman caught in a violent marriage. If Jasmeet K Reen’s Darlings took the route of satire to lay out the psyche of a woman who undergoes domestic violence, Ammu paints a realistic portrait of it. Circle Inspector Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra) is an upright officer who is capable of showing sensitivity to survivors of sexual violence. He’s a loving and romantic husband who takes his responsibility towards his wife seriously.

Superhero movies and romantic comedies agree: Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It compels iconic heroes as well as wayward lovers, resets the moral compass and cleanses the soul. That is the ethos behind “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva,” the first installment in a Bollywood trilogy from director Ayan Mukerji. The film is both sci-fi/fantasy and Bollywood romance, an ambitious introduction to a mythological cinematic universe with the expected hiccups of building a massive world from scratch. It’s an admirable attempt and unmissable theatrical experience for any Bollywood fan.
“Shiva” sets up Mukerji’s “Astraverse” saga, in which a group of humans protect the sacred light of the universe in its various forms, called Astras: Water, earth, wind, and the film’s fire — but also animal powers, like the bull or monkey. The Brahmāstra is the last of these energies, carrying the essence of all of them,...

Photo: ‘Darlings’ Introduction Despite ‘Darlings’ being Jasmeet K. Reen’s debut film, there’s a sense of experience behind every move. Everything about it looks and feels like smart moviemaking. From its cinematography to its pacing to its acting, ‘Darlings’ is a not-so-hidden gem in the global ascendency of Bollywood. With two major production houses backing the film -- legendary Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and star Alia Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions -- Reen had all the resources she could’ve dreamt of. Editor’s Note: This story contains some spoilers for Netflix’s “Darlings.”
Netflix’s “Darlings” contains a hazard warning.
At the film’s end a title card says, “Warning: Violence against women is injurious to health.” It’s a lesson learned firsthand by Hamza (Vijay Varma) when his wife Badru (Alia Bhatt) holds him hostage in their own home after years of domestic abuse.
Directed by Jasmeet K. Reen and written by Reen and Perveez Sheikh, “Darlings” arrives at a critical moment for South Asian audiences. In July, photographer Sania Khan was found dead in her Chicago apartment in what police ruled to be a murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband after years of abuse. On the same day that “Darlings” screened at a Manhattan theater, domestic abuse victim Mandeep Kaur was found dead in what is now being investigated as a homicide.
Both cases have sparked conversations about domestic violence...

Darlings(Netflix)
Starring Shefali Shah, Alia Bhatt, Vijay Varma, Roshan Mathew
Directed by Jasmeet Reen
Debutant director Jasmeet Reen’s Darlings is an adorably seductive concoction about two women, mother, and daughter if you will, who decide to get rid of the man who insists on raining on their parade.
The droll premise is fodder for the darkest shades of comedy. Reen, who comes into directorial élan with very little pre-warning, styles a marital fable that is at once twisted at able. No one has ever thought of doing a film on marital violence where the abused wife and her mother get together to squeeze the life and breath out of the man who thinks it is his birthright to flare up on his wife when she inadvertently leaves a bone or two in the chicken biryani. Or, worse still, when she orders stilettos online.Tauba!

Get ready for outstanding performances and incredible music with those dark thoda comedy Darlings, which is releasing on Netflix August 5th. Alia Bhatt is not only starring in the film; it is her first home production with her company Eternal Sunshine Production. The noir comedy, directed by Jasmeet K Reen, also features the fantastic cast of Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma & Roshan Mathew. Not only that, the music is by two of the Best, composer Vishal Bhardwaj, with lyrics by the Gulzar.
Sung by Arijit Singh, the first song, ‘La llaaj’, has dropped, and it is melancholic melodious music brilliance. The moving music video gives insight into the noir and showcases hints of Alia and Shefali Shah’s extraordinary performances.
We were intrigued by the trailer but even more so now seeing the soul-stirring track ‘La llaaj’.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.
