The house lights dim, the sun rises on its first performance, and a powerful voice belts out: “Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba,” the first lyrics of “Circle of Life.” Lindiwe Dlamini, a member of the ensemble dressed in a white dress, holding African bird puppets in either hand with another on her head, nervously waits in the wings as she readies to take the stage in the opening number of Disney’s Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, the 1994 animated hit film about a lion cub who overcomes adversity and accepts responsibility for his pride and land to become king of the jungle.
“You didn’t know how the audience was going to receive it, [but] the energy was beyond belief,” Dlamini recalls to Et. The actress was 29 years old when she was cast in The Lion King, which opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Nov. 13, 1997. With the live-action remake of Disney's The Lion King currently in production, Elton John says he's looking to get on board.
John stirred speculation of his potential involvement this weekend, when he made a surprise appearance on stage at the Broadway production of the The Lion King, in honor of the show's 20th anniversary.
Et caught up with the legendary entertainer at the Elton John AIDS Foundation's Fall Gala on Tuesday, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City where he was honored for his philanthropic work, and he opened up about his unexpected performance.
"It was very exciting, I was a surprise," John said. "I wasn't able to be here for the 15th anniversary and it's been such an important part of my life, it's opened so many doors for me, and it was just great to see everybody."
"It was a great get together and very meaningful," he added.

Calling Disney. This Is Important.
With the cast of the upcoming Lion King remake getting better by the day -- Beyonce was announced to be voicing Nala last week -- it's hard to imagine how it could still be improved. Then on Sunday, Quavo perfected it with one tweet.
"3 Hyenas Lions King call us @Disney," the Migos rapper tweeted.

Ok, look, powers that be. We don't ask for much, but if we could have Quavo, Offset and Takeoff join this already star-studded franchise, well, not to be dramatic but our lives would be complete.
They wouldn't be the only musicians on the bill either. In addition to Beyonce, Donald Glover is set to voice Simba. Other cast members include James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar.
Additionally, Alfre Woodard (Sarabi), John Oliver (Zazu), John Kani (Rafiki), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), Eric Andre (Azizi...

Elton John Sings 'Circle of Life' With 'The Lion King's Broadway Cast For 20th Anniversary -- Watch!
We are feeling the love tonight!
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Broadway musical adaptation of The Lion King, the Tony-winning show hosted a special performance on Sunday night, featuring one very important guest.
Sir Elton John, who helped write the Grammy and Oscar-winning soundtrack for the Disney film-turned-musical, made a surprise appearance on stage with the cast, singing one of the movie's (and his) all-time classic songs, "The Circle of Life."
As the music icon played piano and sang, the cast backed him up with lyrics in Zulu.
It was a welcome return to performing for the "Rocket Man" singer, who earlier this year had to cancel two months of performances in Las Vegas due to a highly dangerous bacterial infection.

Director Jon Favreau has assembled quite an incredible cast of actors for Disney's realistic CGI animated remake of The Lion King. Most of the actors on the list we've already known about, but the one big confirmation is that Beyonce will officially be providing the voice of Nala. Here's the synopsis that was released:
From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. Walt Disney was a canny marketer, cycling his films in and out of release, on and off television, through the years, recognizing it would appear fresh to younger viewers and fondly recalled by those at later stages in their lives. That practice has continued into the world of home video with the films on rotation and we’re now getting The Lion King: The Circle of Life Edition after having received Masterpiece Collection, Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition. The new edition is already available as Digital HD and hits disc today.
An interesting thing to consider about the story itself is that Simba is being trained by his father to one day succeed him as King. This connection with a parent and this effort towards being prepared to rule is entirely absent from any of the Disney Princess films.

Chiwetel Ejifor (Serenity, Doctor Strange, 12 Years a Slave) is in talks to take on the role of the villain Scar in Jon Favreau’s upcoming remake of The Lion King. The character was originally voiced by Jeremy Irons, who you can watch in action recording for the film here.
Ejifor is a fantastic actor. He may not have the same kind of menacing voice as Irons, but he will still bring a level of greatness to the character with his own unique style.
If cast, he will join the previously cast Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as his father Mufasa, and John Oliver as Zazu. There was a previous rumor that Hugh Jackman was in talks to play Scar, which would have been great! But those rumors have since been debunked.

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller went incognito among the crowds at Coachella – but showed off their adventure on Instagram Monday.
Grande, 23, and Miller, 25, took in Hans Zimmer’s performance after the latter’s own set during the music festival’s second weekend in Indio, California.
The songstress seemed to be particularly moved by a rendition of “Circle of Life” – the Disney track that Zimmer produced with songwriters Elton John and Tim Rice for 1994’s The Lion King.
Wrote Grande, simply, “Sobbed.”

A show like “Planet Earth II” doesn’t come around every day. In fact, it’s been 10 years since the original nature docuseries wowed the world with mind-blowing filmmaking that was both visually breathtaking and emotionally stirring. 2016 isn’t done with us yet. Tyrus Wong, the artist who provided the visual inspiration for “Bambi,” died yesterday. Unlike some of the other celebrities who passed away over the course of the last year (and especially the last week), Wong at least lived a full life: He was 106 at the time of his death. By: Carson Blackwelder

If you’ve been paying attention to the 2017 Oscars race, you’ve likely heard of a little movie titled La La Land. The Damien Chazelle-directed romantic musical features numerous tunes throughout but Lionsgate is pushing hard for just two — “City of Stars” and “Audition” — in the best original song category. One question remains: does having multiple pieces nominated help or hurt a film? Let’s take a look back at what history seems to indicate.
La La Land — while likely a frontrunner for many categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, even the coveted best picture — we’re going to be focusing on the musical side. Both of the film’s stars, Ryan Gosling (jazz musician Sebastian) and Emma Stone (aspiring actress Mia), lent their vocal chops to these two numbers with him owning most of “City of Stars” and her dominating in “Audition.

Watch out Zootopia, Sausage Party wants to fuck up your Oscar hopes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is granting the Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg movie about cursing hot dogs a “full-out awards campaign.” Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman rationalized the decision to promote Sausage Party in this manner to THR saying, “Academy members are way smarter and more forward-thinking than people realize. They want to recognize bold, original, risky breakthroughs, and that’s what Sausage Party is, however subversive. Plus, it’s just plain cool.”
Sausage Party could potentially crack categories besides Best Animated Feature. The Lion Guard is a somewhat surprisingly good show airing on Disney Junior, and the story of Kion and his friends continues with a new DVD release The Lion Guard: Unleash the Power.
The release is the first collection of episodes available on DVD, and it’s not only a good selection because these are episodes that focus on the individual members of the Guard, but because these are some of the series’ most rewatchable efforts.
The show is not just a fun adventure for kids, but the series takes on a broad range within its episodic content, tackling some tricky issues, without actually decoding its own efforts and bogging down in overt explanation.
For example, the episode Fuli’s New Family spans a variety of issues, but chief among them is an examination of the idea that just because doing something seems objectively “right,” or, “how friends act,...

It doesn’t matter if you’re American, there is a Disneyland Paris, Disneyland Hong Kong, a Shanghai Disney resort, a Tokyo Disney resort, and a Hawaii Disney resort and spa in addition to the original Disneyland in Anaheim and the Disney World resort in Florida.
The magic that is Disney and all of its cartoons is a magic that transcends culture, entrances people, compels them to drive hundreds of miles in a vehicle that’s been through a life of love and hard-earned miles, and draws people back into reminiscing about their childhoods. Disney is basically synonymous with happiness. Those who grew up watching the classics learned a lot of valuable life lessons. Though there are many, here are just 6 things fans took away from the Disney classics:

Kiss cams at professional sporting events can get pretty damn awkward. Dance battle cams can be entertaining, but they put a lot of pressure on people to perform. Well finally, the best stadium cam idea has made its grand debut... Ladies and gentlemen... the Lion King cam. The Denver Nuggets' hilarious crowd cam encourages parents to raise their children above their heads, like Rafiki lifting baby Simba in Disney's The Lion King. The song "Circle Of Life" is the soundtrack to this amazing stunt, obviously. Sb Nation brought this to our attention following the Nuggets game against the Spurs late last week. Sam Robson is a man, a myth, a legend. Oh, you don't know him, you say. Allow us to introduce you. Robson is an a capella genius who just so happened to multiply himself 50 times in order to bring to you what is most likely the best version of The Lion King's "Circle of Life" that you will ever hear. Yes, that includes the original. We dare you to disagree. Using only his voice, body and percussion, Robson masterfully brings to you the childhood classic with the same passion you've come to know and love, but somehow makes it better. "I'm really excited to bring you my latest project," he writes beneath his YouTube video. "As a kid I remember seeing the Lion King and being...

In 1994 on this day, Disney’s “The Lion King” was released in theaters. I was four years old and distinctly remember being too scared to see it. When I finally did, on VHS in the safety of my own home, I found that it was indeed a frightening film, and to be totally honest I hold that opinion to this day. I don’t know if it’s the fact that Scar kills his own brother by pushing him off a cliff into a deadly stampede, or the constant threat of desperate, flesh eating hyenas with cruel intentions, but something about this movie chills me to my very soul. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful and life-affirming spectacle, it just has some very dark and complicated undertones. And hey, I’m not complaining, I love dark and complicated undertones, it’s just that as a sheltered and...

Passengers with delayed flights at Laguardia Airport in New York City got an unexpected show earlier this week. Also waiting out the heavy rainfall were the Broadway casts of “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” including Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart and Backstage cover star Adam Jacobs. To pass the time, the actors performed impromptu renditions of “The Circle of Life” and “Arabian Nights,” and Iglehart dropped an impressive freestyle to the tune of Black Star’s “Lions of Hip-Hop.” Check out the performances! The "Circle of Life" has a whole new meaning for Nik Wallenda as he heads down to Orlando at the end of the month.
On April 29, the seventh-generation tightrope artist will head to central Florida to attempt to walk the observation wheel called the Orlando Eye without a tether and a wire.
"It's 400 ft. tall, but I don't think I will be taking in much of the great view," Wallenda, 36, tells People. "I couldn't be more excited."
Wallenda, who has survived walking between two Chicago skyscrapers and across the Grand Canyon, says all of his walks are challenging but the one in Orlando is unique.

It’s spring break all around the country. While the annual week off from school is most known as the time of year when college kids make pilgrimages to warm weather destinations like Florida and Mexico, revelers in Panama City got an unexpected dose of early morning Disney as their hotel blasted "Circle of Life" from The Lion King. Watch their reaction for yourself below. You may not automatically equate spring break, which is usually thought of as a bawdy, R-rated affair (or at least hard PG-13, with lots of drinking and exposed skin), with the animated saga of Simba, but this is apparently an annual tradition at this one particular Holiday Inn. Every morning, promptly at eleven, they play the Elton John song over their loudspeakers to get the parade of revelers up and moving and ready for another day in paradise. You can see how ...
