CBS sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" was a staple for American TV audiences of the '70s, thanks in large part to clever writing and Newhart's much-loved performance as psychologist and comedic straight man Bob Hartley. The show ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978, but it had a surprisingly long pop cultural afterlife. Characters from "The Bob Newhart Show" have popped up in everything from "Murphy Brown" to "St. Elsewhere" to "Alf," though their most famous reappearance came in the jokey "Newhart" finale in 1990. In it, Newhart wakes up in bed next to his wife from the previous series and discovers that this entire sitcom was all an elaborate dream. "The Bob Newhart Show," it turned out, was his real world.

Sherwood Schwartz's 1963 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" was a high-concept series that, thanks to the gods of syndication, remained in the public consciousness for decades after it went off the air. The show's impeccable theme song, written by Schwartz and George Wyle, may be the best theme in television history, as it handily explains the premise using a hummable sea shanty: five tourists boarded the S.S. Minnow -- manned by Captain Jonas Grumby (Alan Hale) and his first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver) -- for a three-hour tour off the coast of Honolulu. When the tiny ship hit some bad weather, the seven characters landed on a desert island, stranded. The series followed their merry attempts to survive.
"Gilligan's Island" ran for 98 episodes, ending its initial run in 1967, but reruns continued to air well into the 1990s. Yes, there was a time when "Gilligan's Island" was a reliable TV staple, occupying...

The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. In the US, it was the decade that gave us two thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Terminator and Tron. In TV land, Star Trek got a brand new Generation, Quantums Leapt, Knights Rode, and of course, Alf.
But on the other side of the pond, British science fiction television was doing things the way we British always have – for less money, and a bit more bleak. But it wasn’t all creepy John Wyndham adaptations and hostile alien invasions, the 1980s also delivered a couple of British space comedy classics, along with the most underrated series in sci-fi history.

The science fiction genre continues to thrill television audiences after more than 70 years, taking viewers to different worlds and exploring far-out concepts. However, just because the genre boasts rich storytelling potential and spectacle, it is, of course, not at all immune to the dangers of a sudden cancellation. In an era when even an early renewal order can't guarantee subsequent episodes, that means some sci-fi shows end on cliffhangers, never to be given a satisfying conclusion.
With the stakes often so high for sci-fi television, that makes these unresolved plot threads all the more frustrating for fans following a series and invested in the characters. From being stranded across time and space to fan-favorite characters faced with mortal peril, these cliffhangers threaten to overshadow a show's legacy. Here are the biggest television cliffhangers in the sci-fi genre that were left unresolved by cancelations from the studios or networks producing them.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is That a Meat Cleaver in Your Pocket — or Are My Parents Just Happy to See Me?
“What were they before they were leftovers?” That’s the dramatic meat hook on which Bob Balaban hangs his giddily middling 1989 horror comedy “Parents,” a surrealist satire set in 1950s suburbia, best likened to a chunky jello mold filled with human toes. I’ll admit, I wouldn’t serve cannibalism cinema this underbaked to mixed company; let alone the hubby’s new boss and his one-scene-having wife. But for the IndieWire After Dark family during ’80s Week,...

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) has hit something of a wall. The company reported its second quarter 2023 earnings this week, and while total revenue was up year-over-year, it fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The company’s stock price has taken a beating, falling to $0.88 per share in after-hours trading on Monday amidst news that it had absorbed a net loss of $43.7 million during the quarter.
The numbers suggest that Csse is having a tougher time digesting last year's purchase of Redbox than anticipated. Both CEO Bill Rouhana and CFO Jason Meier said during their conference call to discuss the report with analysts and investors that the company planned to “streamline” aspects of its businesses to help boost revenue flows, which means cuts could be coming to its streaming platforms Redbox and Crackle.

In the video, Esti sat with her mom, Chrissy Teigen, her little brother Wren, and another person, as she babbled happily. Off camera, Legend asked her, "What's my name?" The little one smiled in response as Teigen prompted, "What's daddy's name? Dada?" As In Its Wake begins Pastor Kurdt Waidmann is having a crisis of faith and asks God for a sign. He no sooner finishes than he gets the news that one of his parishioners was killed by a hit-and-run driver right outside the church. That probably wasn’t the sign he wanted, but The Lord works in mysterious ways.
In a restaurant, four friends Amy (Paige Foskett; Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities), Laura, Tim and Manny are trying to figure out what to do with their weekend.
At a nearby table, three businessmen Mitch, Sean, and Sam are doing the same. Until Sam decides to start trouble. But, before he and Tim can start throwing punches a familiar face appears and defuses the situation.

The alien puppet (Alf is an acronym for Alien Life Form) has been revived for a series of branded segments on Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort channel.

The expansion of free streaming services continues unabated. On Wednesday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) shared some details on its ever-expanding reach and upcoming original programming at the Iab Newfronts in New York. A month after launching a new advertising sales division known as Crackle Connex, Csse reports having an audience of over 80 million monthly active users, up 100% year-over-year.
This rapid expansion was aided by the company acquiring Redbox last May, giving Csse an out-of-home presence, but the majority of the growth comes from the addition of over 160 channels on the company’s free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) and ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services.

The NBC comedy Alf may have been something that could only happen in the ‘80s. Alf, short for Alien Life Form, was a puppet with the voice of creator Paul Fusco. His Melmac name was Gordon Shumway. Anyway, the idea of building a family sitcom around a stuffed character is something they probably wouldn’t do today. But, if you grew up on Alf or just discovered it on Peacock, Freevee, Shout TV, Crackle, Tubi, Vudu, Fubo or Roku Channel, there are a few other shows that deliver similarly oddball comedy.

Character actor and voice actor Earl Boen had a long list of credits, working on nearly 300 different projects over the course of a career that began in 1974. But for most movie fans, Boen will always be remembered for playing the role of Dr. Peter Silberman in The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, T2 3-D: Battle Across Time, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Sadly, it has been confirmed by Deadline that Boen passed away in Hawaii yesterday, January 5th, at the age of 81. In 2022, it's quite difficult to explain the deathly tight grip that "Married... with Children" had on American culture. The show, which first aired in 1987, was generally constructed like the 30-some years of sitcoms that came before it. There was a working-class father (Ed O'Neill), a doting mother (Katey Sagal), and a pair of precocious teen kids. They even had a stock "nosy neighbor" (Amanda Bearce). The gag of "Married...," however, was that the characters were all the most awful people you've ever seen. Dad was a slobby misanthrope who hated his family with open disgust, Mom's only survival trait was curt mockery of her slovenly husband, and the kids were various levels of idiotic, each pursuing sex and money with only the dimmest perception of the world around them. What's more, they often celebrated their own shortcomings. They were the below-average, all-American family you loved to hate.

Sony continues developing the 1986 NBC TV series "Alf" (aka 'Alien Life Form') for a big screen feature combining live-action and CG animation:
Jordan Kerner, who adapted "The Smurfs" for the studio will produce the new film with "Alf" creator Paul Fusco (original voice/operator of the "Muppets"-like 'Alf' hand puppet)...

As sitcom premises go, Bonnie and Terry Turner's ultra-popular sci-fi sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" is first rate. The show follows a quartet of nonhumanoid space aliens from a distant galaxy -- played by John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt -- who have disguised themselves as a human family in order to study our species up close. The show's comedy is derived from their utter cluelessness about the way the people in Ohio behave. "3rd Rock from the Sun" came in a long tradition of silly sci-fi sitcoms that included "Out of the World," "Alf," "Aliens in the Family," and "They Came from Outer Space." These were shows that took familiar American sitcom tropes, and skewered them by putting aliens in place of traditionally human characters.

The Tim Burtonesque depiction of suburbia, full of quirky characters and pastel colors, signals a very different type of horror movie in The Loneliest Boy in the World. One freak accident further isolates the timid and lonely Oliver (Max Harwood), sparking a desperate quest for friendship. He finds it in death, creating a sweet coming-of-age fairy tale in the vein of 2006 zombie-comedy Fido.
Oliver lives a reclusive life in the suburbs with his mother. He never ventures much outside the home, finding companionship through her and his beloved sitcom Alf. That changes when a wild series of events leaves mom dead, impaled on a garden gnome, and Oliver at the mercy of a social worker, Margot (Ashley Benson). The social worker is concerned with Oliver’s isolation and mental well-being, giving him a finite timeline to find friends before she intervenes. He takes her words to heart and unearths the recently buried,...

She appeared in about 20 episodes ranging from “The Stakeout” early in Season 2 to the 1998 finale.

Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe Team for Netflix Comedy Series ‘Unstable’ With ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ Creator
Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, have teamed with Victor Fresco on the Netflix comedy series “Unstable,” Variety has learned.
The Lowes will star in the series and also co-created it with Fresco, with all three serving as executive producers. It is set in a cutting-edge biotech research company, following an introverted, socially-challenged son who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father in order to save him from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often trolls his dad.
“We are very excited to be working with Victor, Rob and John Owen,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy. “The three of them – and their wildly funny, smart sensibilities – are a perfect fit for our growing slate of scripted comedies.”
Lowe currently stars in the Fox drama series “9-1-1: Lone Star.” His other notable...

Shout! Factory Acquires Rights To '80s Sitcom Alf, Will Expand The Property In Ways Nobody Asked For
Alright, kids, gather around grandma now and let me weave you a tale about an era of film and television that was surprisingly puppet-dominant. There were, of course, the forever series like "Sesame Street" and "The Muppets," the kind of programs where the IP is legally not allowed to die lest it break the hearts of millions. And there were the slightly weirder off-shoots, like "Fraggle Rock," or the more fantastical stories like "The NeverEnding Story" and its terrifying cousin "The Dark Crystal." And then, there was "Alf," the chronicle of an intergalactic hell beast that slaughtered animals...

Exclusive: Distribution rights to Alf, the puppet-fronted sitcom that ran on NBC from 1986 to 1990 and spawned an animated series and a cult following, have been acquired by Shout! Factory.
The company, in partnership with Alien Productions, plan to bring Alf titles to digital entertainment platforms in the U.S. Lionsgate, which previously had rights, had brokered a deal for the sitcom to stream on Fox’s ad-supported service Tubi but that agreement ended last fall.
The deal was announced by Shout! founders and CEOs Bob Emmer and Garson Foos; Alien Productions partners Paul Fusco and Brian Patchett. Gene Pao and Jeffrey Peisch, Shout’s EVP of strategy and digital and SVP of programming and new business development, respectively, also took part in the deal.
Alf, per the official logline, centers on Gordon Shumway, a furry, wise-cracking alien from the planet Melmac who crash lands into the garage of the Tanner family.

Sony continues to develop the 1986 NBC TV series "Alf" (aka 'Alien Life Form') for a big screen live-action feature:
Jordan Kerner, who adapted "The Smurfs" for the studio will produce the new film with "Alf" creator Paul Fusco (original voice/operator of the "Muppets"-like 'Alf' hand puppet) and "Alf" original TV series producer Tom Patchett. Ben Haber and Kenneth Kaufman will executive produce.
The "Alf" TV series produced 102 episodes, followed by the 1996 TV movie, "Project Alf", focusing on 'Gordon Shumway', an Et who crash lands in the garage of the suburban middle-class 'Tanner' family. Alf's home planet 'Melmac' exploded following a nuclear war, when he was off planet as part of the 'Melmac Orbit Guard'.
Covered in fur with a rippled snout, his heart is located in his head. He is sarcastic, slovenly and cynical, sometimes putting himself at risk of being discovered. He eventually becomes...

When everyone in the industry is quick to pump the brakes as to whether or not a reboot is a possibility it’s kind of obvious that the idea that’s in question is still kind of an iffy proposition at best. A lot of people remember Alf since he was one of the more lovable and amusing characters of the 80s, but bringing him back is still in the earliest phases according to the folks at The Hollywood Reporter. But the best question is what might happen if there is an Alf reboot, and there are a lot of different ways
