As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

Sony Pictures’ Crunchyroll anime streaming service has ordered a remake of the anime series “Trigun,” based on a popular manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow.
“Trigun Stampede” will be produced in Japan by animation studio Orange and Toho. Details about the series are set to be unveiled July 2 during Anime Expo 2022 in downtown Los Angeles.
The series is based on the popular action manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow that “follows the story of Vash the Stampede, a legendary gunman and a pacifist with a bounty on his head,” according to Crunchyroll. It was produced as an anime series “Trigun” in 1998. In 2010, it was adapted as a feature film, “Trigun: Badlands Rumble,” from director Satoshi Nishimura and studio Madhouse.
Nightow and producers of the new series slated to appear on stage to discuss “Trigun Stampede.” Panelists, according to Crunchyroll, will include designer Kouji Tajima, Orange producers Kiyotaka Waki and Yoshihiro Watanabe and Toho’s Katsuhiro Takei.

For the past two Mays, Hollywood’s studio lots have remained quiet during the week they should be buzzing with the world’s top international acquisitions execs, excitedly chomping down on In-n-Out burgers and squeezing into grand theater halls at the annual LA Screenings.
Normal service will be resumed next week, as in-person screenings return for the first time since 2019 following the (seeming) end of the worst of the Covid pandemic. Execs are closing down their Zoom apps and instead eyeing up lunches in the sun and the programs that have most caught their eye during pilot season. As one UK buyer says: “It’s not quite as fun chatting over a cheese sandwich at home than fine dining in Los Angeles.”
But it’s hardly a secret that the LA Screenings aren’t exactly what they once were to the international TV community, with many shows taken off the...

After three years at Sony, Colin Decker is stepping down as CEO of Crunchyroll, with longtime Funimation exec Rahul Purini poised to run the anime brand as president.
The transition is occurring as Crunchyroll and Funimation continue to integrate their operations. AT&T sold Crunchyroll to Sony last year for 1.175 billion and the two anime operations have been joining forces in recent months.
Purini has been COO of Crunchyroll after holding the same title at Funimation.
Keith Le Goy, chairman of worldwide distribution and networks for Sony Pictures Entertainment, confirmed the move in a memo to employees. (Read it in full below.) Decker “championed and played a key role in our acquisition of Crunchyroll,” Le Goy noted, while Purini has been “instrumental in the company’s global and subscription growth” during his Sony exec stint.

Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures motion picture group chairman, has said many times, both on the record and in the private confines of Louis B. Mayer’s old office on the Sony lot, that he is an arms dealer in the arms race.
He is referring to, of course, Hollywood’s leading business mandate to launch and service streaming competitors to giants such as Netflix and Disney Plus — subscriber platforms that have become Wall Street’s golden geese after the global pandemic shuttered movie theaters and theme parks. With Amazon Studios and Apple TV Plus chugging along in search of narrative identities, and WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS working to grab eyeballs with vast film and TV libraries, many wondered how and if Sony Pictures Entertainment would enter the fray.

On the surface, Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment seem to be two studios heading in opposite directions when it comes to business strategy.
Disney is investing huge sums of money and resources into building direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Sony Pictures has vowed to stay on its traditional studio path, dealing high-end content to the highest bidders. But the two companies found common ground in a massive U.S. movie licensing deal that was more than a year in the making for Sony.
News of the agreement cheered Marvel fans, as it promises to make Sony’s Marvel titles — including various “Spider-Man” movies — available alongside Disney’s Marvel vault on the Disney Plus platform. For industry insiders, the real news is how Disney and Sony rearranged the traditional post-theatrical map for movies on their path to profitability through a maze of TV exhibition windows.

The Walt Disney Company and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced a multi-year content licensing agreement for U.S. streaming and TV rights to Sony Pictures’ new theatrical releases across Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution’s vast portfolio of platforms including its streaming services Disney+ and Hulu, as well as linear entertainment networks including ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic. The deal covers theatrical releases from 2022-2026 and begins for each film following its Pay 1 TV window. The agreement builds upon the companies’ prior arrangement which saw Spe movies licensed to FX in the post-Pay 1 TV window.
The deal also grants rights to a significant number of Spe’s iconic library titles, ranging from the “Jumanji” and “Hotel Transylvania” franchises to Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters films, including Spider-Man.
This gives Disney enormous programming potential across its platforms and makes them key destinations for a robust collection of Spider-Man films.

Disney and Sony have reached a multi-year deal for the post-pay-1 release window, a pact that will make Spider-Man and other major franchises eligible to stream on Disney+ for the first time.
The flagship streaming service and Hulu are among many platforms covered by the agreement, which the official announcement called “unprecedented.” A host of platforms under the Disney tent are involved, including ABC, FX, Freeform. No specific plans for Disney+ have yet been finalized, but Marvel fans had been wondering when Spidey and others would appear alongside the rest of the streaming stable. Upcoming Sony movies will head to Disney platforms after they stream on Netflix
Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment have agreed to a multiyear licensing deal that will grant Disney rights to Sony’s upcoming films following their streaming run on Netflix.
Earlier this month, Sony and Netflix agreed to a streaming deal that sees Netflix replace Starz as the place for Sony films to premiere after their theatrical and home entertainment runs. Disney has access to Sony’s films following Netflix’s exclusive window; so-called “Pay-1 windows” typically last for 18 months.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have set a significant new licensing deal giving the streaming giant an exclusive window for the studio’s theatrical titles starting in 2022.
The agreement, which replaces an output arrangement with Lionsgate-owned Starz dating back to 2005, provides Netflix with an 18-month exclusive window for Sony films. Multiple bidders had been angling for the rights for some time, with Netflix emerging the winner. Terms were not officially disclosed, but Netflix prevailed with an offer of $1 billion over four years, according to sources familiar with the deal.
There is a degree of flux in terms of when exactly the Netflix exclusive will kick in on each film given fast-evolving theatrical window strategies. Nevertheless, dozens of top titles are confirmed to stream there exclusively after they play in theaters and are released on home entertainment platforms.

Netflix has emerged the winner of a nearly two-year auction for the exclusive U.S. rights to stream Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases in the first pay TV window starting with the studio’s 2022 slate.
Netflix has also set a first-look agreement with Sony for all of the studio’s original movies produced for the direct-to-streaming market. That deal also requires Netflix to commit to a certain number of titles from the studio, but it doesn’t stop Sony from selling direct-to-streaming titles to Netflix’s rivals. In that case, however, Netflix would have to pass on the project for Sony to be able to sell it to another streamer.
As part of the pact, Netflix will license an unspecified number of older titles from Sony’s movie vault.

Disney is laying off staffers in its studio division — including six individuals at Searchlight — according to an individual with knowledge of the situation. A rep for Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the number of employees affected, but Variety reported that the cuts involved at least 50 staffers and the elimination of several hundred open positions.
Disney’s studio marketing group along with its theatrical stage team in New York will also be impacted. The reductions follow the news that ESPN is eliminating 500 jobs in an effort to cut costs amid the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro informed his staff on Thursday.
Back in September, Disney eliminated around 28,000 domestic jobs in its theme parks division due to uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, two-thirds of which will be part-time roles. The company blamed California for exacerbating its financial woes due to its “unwillingness” to lift Covid-19 restrictions that would allow Disneyland,...

Sony is merging its theatrical, home entertainment and TV distribution marketing operations under the co-oversee of Josh Greenstein, the studio’s Motion Picture Group President, and Keith Le Goy, the studio’s Networks and Distribution President.
The move comes at time for the Culver City, CA studio as it responds to viewers’ changing viewing habits during the pandemic, and the need to respond to emerging release patterns by harnessing Sony’s collective expertise in marketing a title through its entire lifecycle, across all platforms.
Due to the combining of departments, we hear that roughly 35 staffers were cut in distribution and marketing. While studio brass have been considering this type of restructuring for some time, the pandemic further hastened that decision.
Stateside, all theatrical, home entertainment and television distribution marketing divisions will be brought together, while there will be a regional model for those businesses abroad.

Entertainment Chiefs Talk Covid-19’s ‘Generation Defining’ Impact at Nab Executive Leadership Summit
There is no doubt that the coronavirus pandemic has had a “generation defining” impact on the entertainment business.
During the Nab Show Executive Leadership Summit, produced in partnership with the Variety Streaming Room, leaders from across the business gathered virtually to discuss how Covid-19 is changing the business across all platforms, and how Gen Z’s viewing habits are guiding their decision-making.
With the pandemic forcing production on pretty much every single film and television project to shut down for the time being, the depth and quality of a service’s library is proving key to getting through this difficult time for original content, according to Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks at Starz, who was speaking as part of the “A View from Above: TV Transformed” panel.

When the film and TV industry emerges from self-isolation to a forever altered landscape, one silver lining will be the online savvy newly gained by traditionally digitally-shy businesses, some of whom have reacted with lightning speed to devise virtual showcases.
A drive towards virtual events initially manifested in early March across disrupted festivals such as Cph:dox and Thessaloniki, which hosted Zoom-based pitch events. But now, a new wave of business-oriented, distributor-led virtual events need to prove their mettle as the full brunt of canceled April and May markets such as Series Mania, MipTV, L.A. Screenings and Cannes is felt across the industry.
Sony was one of the first studios to reveal plans for a virtual offering in lieu of their annual Screenings event in May, with plans for an on-demand experience showing off new titles such as Hulu comedies “Woke” and “Crossing Swords” and Adrien Brody-fronted horror drama “Chapelwaite.

Usually at this time of year buyers for TV outlets around the world stay keenly abreast of news about programs in the works for the fall television season. Many try to keep tabs on the hot prospects to prepare for shopping trips to come at program markets such as this week’s L.A. The venerable Sony Crackle streaming service is looking for a potential joint-venture partner or buyer for its U.S. operations, even as its Latin American service shuts down in April.
Crackle said it would shutter its Latin American subscription video service this week after concluding the business wasn’t economically viable. That news followed a decision last June to pull the plug on the free, ad-supported service in Canada.
“The decision to close Crackle Latin America is unrelated to the U.S. Crackle business, which is operated independently as an ad-supported Avod service,” Keith Le Goy, Sony Pictures Television’s president of worldwide distribution, wrote in a letter to staff that was obtained by Deadline. “We continue to explore potential strategic partnerships for Crackle in the U.S. and will share more information when possible.”

Sony Pictures Television is folding the Crackle Latin America subscription VOD service, which has 400,000 subscribers across 17 countries, after concluding the business isn’t economically viable.
Crackle Latin America first launched in April 2012 as an ad-supported streaming service — like the U.S. version of Crackle — before switching in 2016 to a subscription video-on-demand model, distributed through pay-tv partners. Crackle Latin America will shut down effective April 30, 2019, the result of Sony Pictures’ company-wide strategic review of its portfolio to prune underperforming divisions.
“After much consideration, we have decided that Crackle Latin America is not sustainable in the present highly competitive local environment,” Keith Le Goy, Sony Pictures’ president of worldwide TV distribution, wrote in a memo to staff Thursday, a copy of which was obtained by Variety.

There was certainly a buzz in the air at this week’s Mipcom. The market felt genuinely busy and a raft of A-list talent such as Ben Stiller, Issa Rae and Jenna Coleman gave it a spark of glamor. Some 13,800 delegates, including 4,800 buyers from 110 countries attended the international television market, which was dominated by chatter about the growth of digital buyers and the “never-ending” drama boom as well as concerns over what media consolidation means for the global market (as well as traditional complaints about the rain and the airport-style security).

Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment has launched a TV financing venture for genre series and international co-productions in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.
Skybound has created Skybound Galactic, headed by Rick Jacobs, producer and former literary manager at Circle of Confusion, the management-production agency that reps “Walking Dead” creator Kirkman.
“Combining the multi-platform capabilities of Skybound and Top Cow’s extensive library of IP with the best worldwide distribution in Sony is an unbelievable opportunity,” said Jacobs, who is CEO of Skybound Galactic. “I’m looking forward to continuing Skybound’s mission to help creators expand their content into new markets.”
The partners said the new venture would finance the development and production of television series. Sony Pictures TV is an investor in Skybound Galactic and will handle international sales rights for its projects. The focus will be on genre fare and the enhanced ability in a global market to...

Sony Pictures TV on Wednesday laid off a number of employees at its programming, home entertainment, and worldwide distribution divisions as part of its on-going consolidation at the company.
The exact number of job cuts is unknown, but an insider confirmed to TheWrap that several people were let go. Sony declined to comment when contacted by TheWrap.
Sony Pictures TV Chairman Mike Hopkins said in June, in announcing the reorganization, that the company was going to be forced to “make some difficult decisions.”
In July the studio cut over two dozen staffers in its film marketing and distribution departments, as management takes marching orders from Sony Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciqerra to have leaner operations in film and TV.

A long-expected round of layoffs has come to Sony Pictures Television’s recently consolidated unit covering worldwide channels, home entertainment, and program sales activities under Sony Pictures Entertainment distribution president Keith Le Goy.
The number of affected staffers is not known. But sources tell Variety that the layoff did not affect executives above the senior vice president level.
Sony in June consolidated multiple divisions in international and home entertainment under Le Goy — a move that presaged the elimination of redundancies. International TV networks, TV distribution, and home entertainment previously ran as separate entities under different leaders. In a memo to staff at the time, Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins wrote that the intent was to “create a stronger and more agile organization, one that is better able to pivot and capitalize on opportunities in a fast-changing and increasingly complex global marketplace.” Hopkins also emphasized at the time that Sony TV...

Exclusive: After two rounds of consolidation in the distribution operations of Sony Pictures TV, the merged division is undergoing layoffs. I hear staffers at the combined global networks/worldwide distribution/home entertainment unit were notified today that their positions are being eliminated.
There are no numbers available on the size of the layoffs, though one insider described the situation as a “bloodbath.” I hear there are a number of Sony TV veterans of 20-plus years on the list, including executives at the Svp and VP level.
I hear among those let go was Rachel Mizuno, Svp Marketing, U.S. Distribution, one of the highest-ranking women of color at Spt.
The writing seems to have been on the wall when, in February, Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins folded home video into worldwide distribution under Keith Le Goy, Several months later he also added global networks operations, which had been reporting directly to him,...

Sony Pictures Television has revealed the senior international execs that will lead the business as it moves towards a territory management model.
The Hollywood studio has named the “first wave of leaders” to run many of its major territories, while it is still searching for an exec to run the UK. Monica Veiga and Nathascha Rengifo will lead the Latin American business, excluding Mexico and Brazil, Phil King is in charge of Canada, Dai Huang will lead China, Noemie Weisse will boss France and Zelda Stewart is in charge in Italy.
This comes after Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins reorganized a number of areas of the company, mostly on the distribution side. After folding home video into worldwide distribution under Keith Le Goy in February, Hopkins now added global networks operations, which had been reporting directly to him, to Le Goy’s portfolio. The combined global networks/worldwide distribution...

Teenage superspy Alex Rider’s exploits are coming to the small screen after Sony and British producer Eleventh Hour Films teamed up for an eight-episode adaptation of “Point Blanc,” the second book in Anthony Horowitz’s young-adult series. The show will follow reluctant spy Rider as he infiltrates a controversial correctional academy for the wayward offspring of the ultra-rich. Acting as an an unofficial agent for MI6, he investigates the sinister purpose of the academy.
Drama indie Eleventh Hour optioned the Rider books and created a spec series project that Sony has now boarded. Sony Pictures Television’s international production and worldwide distribution divisions, under Wayne Garvie and Keith Le Goy, respectively, will work on the project. A Rider series was originally being developed for ITV, but the U.K. broadcaster is no longer on board. Sony will fully fund and look for broadcaster or platform partners.
