When it comes to casting “Top Chef,” talent is the most important element a contestant must possess in order to compete. “Everything else comes second,” said Ron Mare, the Emmy-nominated Senior Vice President of Casting at Magical Elves, which produces Bravo’s long-running culinary competition. But it’s no longer necessarily a skill with knives that the casting team is looking for.
“You have to have that talent level in order to go on a show like this,” he continues, explaining that casting “Top Chef” is far different from the many reality series he’s handled in the past, like, “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway.” As the series has evolved, so have the people cast on the show. While talent remains paramount, there’s more of an emphasis on compelling food stories, with host Padma Lakshmi telling “Entertainment Tonight” that “Top Chef” “shows audiences a very particular side of these chefs.

One Brian has stood out on “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” as Malarkey’s super-sized personality and hit-and-miss results in the kitchen have gotten him a lot of attention — some of it even good. But what about Bryan Voltaggio? He came into the season as one of the front-runners, according to the combined predictions of fans we’ve surveyed here in our predictions center. But he’s not off to a great start in cooking challenges. Will his luck turn around?
The first three episodes of the season went pretty well for Voltaggio. He won the first quickfire challenge along with his teammates Joe Sasto, Jamie Lynch, Kevin Gillespie and Melissa King. And he had one of the top dishes in both “The Jonathan Gold Standard” and “Strokes of Genius.” But then he hit a rough patch.

Given that the latest crop of contestants competing on “Top Chef’s” 17th season are returning players who never won the Bravo reality cooking show, most treat one another as peers and often pitch in when one of the players needs a helping hand.
But there is a returnee who is better at running his mouth and reveling in camera time than actually making fine-dining food. That would be Season 3 fourth-place finisher Brian Malarkey. The San Diego resident has opened restaurants across the country and pops up on TV with some regularity, either on early morning shows or as a judge on Food Network series. But based on the food he has put out this season, Brian’s cooking leaves much to be desired.

On nearly every TV reality competition show, there is one contestant who is a bit of an annoyance and not exactly a team player. On the current All-Star season of “Top Chef” that includes finalists, fan favorites and front-runners from past seasons who never won, there is an air of professionalism and camaraderie shared among the players — save for one.

Did Brian Malarkey truly live up to his name last week on the All-Star season of “Top Chef”? First, for a vegetarian challenge he decided to streamline his usual overloaded creation by basically serving mozzarella and tomatoes with a vinaigrette. All I know is, if I can make a dish served on the show, it is no winner. Disappointed head judge Tom Colicchio thought the dish was too simple, adding that, “It’s ubiquitous. We’ve seen it.” Even though Brian’s offering was the red team’s first course, it was already clear he was in danger of being on the bottom three.
But his own dish might have been the least of his sins Brian later seemed to throw a teammate under the bus. Because it was a team challenge, many of the chefs helped their cohorts when it came to plating their six-course menu. That was the...

“I’ve never heard ‘Pack your knives and go’ before. I feel very disappointed in myself. I did not put my life and my restaurant on hold to get eliminated. I came here to win,” says Lisa Fernandes, who was eliminated from “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” in the episode “You’re So Fresh” but had a chance to redeem herself against Joe Sasto in “Last Chance Kitchen.” Watch what happened above.

Three male cheftestants have been eliminated from “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” so far — Joe Sasto, Angelo Sosa and Jamie Lynch — but it looks like a woman will be on the chopping block in week four when the competitors have to make vegetarian dishes for the judges. That’s according to our racetrack odds, which are based on the combined forecasts of “Top Chef” fans who have placed their bets here in our predictions center.
As of this writing Lisa Fernandes gets leading odds of 37/10 of being eliminated. She previously competed on the show in season four, when she was a runner-up but landed at the bottom seven times in a row before the finale. She’s been doing alright in season 17, though, advancing safely through all three elimination challenges so far.

On last week’s Season 17 episode of “Top Chef,” Jamie Lynch was the All-Star eliminated for not having enough time to pour his jus over his seared chicken breast, leaving his plate inspired by baroque paintings rather tasteless. He had a chance to earn redemption in “Last Chance Kitchen,” but Joe Sasto bested him in another poultry challenge. This week, the Los Angeles edition of Bravo’s reality show has the 12 remaining chefs making dishes inspired by the animated film “Trolls World Tour” and participating in a vegetarian six-course meal Read on for our minute-by-minute takes on the fourth episode of the season, “You’re So Fresh” (all times Et/Pt).

“It’s pretty frustrating to be out of the competition so early,” says “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” contestant Jamie Lynch about being eliminated in the episode “Strokes of Genius.” “I haven’t had a whole lot of success with chicken in this competition. I would love to be able to come out on top.” Lynch had a chance to get back into the game by competing on “Last Chance Kitchen” against Joe Sasto, still alive after winning last week’s “Last Chance” episode. After winning the first elimination challenge of the season, Gregory Gourdet rose to the top of our “Top Chef” odds according to the combined predictions of fans who place their bets every week here in our predictions center. But after the second episode, “The Jonathan Gold Standard,” the balance of power has shifted. See where our racetrack odds stand now.
Gourdet did just fine in “Gold Standard,” making halibut, turmeric and tomato broth that passed muster with the judges well enough for him to advance him safely to the next round, but Bryan Voltaggio made the judges’ top three with his short ribs with charred eggplant puree, fermented radish and butternut squash vinaigrette. After that impressive showing he has shot to the top of our predictions with odds of 10/3.

When Atlanta-based restaurateur Kevin Gillespie, 37, competed on the sixth season of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” he ended up in third place. But he came in first in the hearts of viewers when he earned the title of Fan Favorite. No less than Wolfgang Puck declared him his favorite of all the “Top Chef” alums.
This time Kevin is even more determined to win. As he said in the second episode of season 17, which pits a line-up of returning All-Stars against one another, he has a very good reason why he was psyched for another chance to show off his culinary stuff. “It’s to prove to myself that I am not dying.” Kevin had surgery to remove a tumor from his kidney and spent a year fighting to recover. After overcoming such a serious health issue, this guy with a dry sense of humor clearly has a fire in his belly to succeed.

Joe Sasto was eliminated in the season premiere for an unfortunate seafood dish on flatbread. Angelo Sosa was ousted in “Gold Standard” for drowning a piece of tuna in super-sweet broth. So it was time for what Sasto called “an Italian throw-down bro-down” between the two chefs looking for redemption. And what better way to redeem themselves after their bad seafood than to make new fish dishes to be judged by renowned seafood chef Michael Cimarusti, who himself was a favorite of food critic Jonathan Gold.

Given that this season of Bravo’s “Top Chef” features 15 culinary whizzes from seasons past who just missed winning in their previous appearances, it is going to hurt every time one of these All Stars are sent packing. That is how I felt when Season 15 veteran Joe Sasto, he of the fab handlebar mustache and a knack for making fresh pasta was given the heave-ho on the March 19 premiere.
It’s true the Lost Angeles-based chef, who specializes in modern Italian cuisine, did commit several cooking sins both during the quickfire challenge and during the elimination round. In the quickfire, he chose to roll out fresh pasta and cook it without knowing how much time his team had to finish. Judge Padma Lakshmi was visibly displeased and described his homemade noodles as being “doughy, dry and chewy.” Luckily, his team made up for his flaws and won the challenge.

When you are faced with a season of “Top Chef” All Stars who just missed taking the top prize, it’s going to cut deep when the first returnee has to go. That is the case of Joe Sasto, a Los Angeles-based chef who came in third on Season 15, which took place in Colorado. We’re down to the Final 4 chef-testants on Season 15 of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” but there’s no obvious frontrunner to win at this point. Since it’s still anyone’s game between Carrie Baird, Joe Sasto, Adrienne Cheatham and Joseph Flamm, who do You think has what it takes to go all the way and join the “Top Chef” winners list? Hurry and make your predictions right now before it’s too late.
On paper Carrie looks to have a head start on the other three players. She’s won three Quickfire challenges and two Elimination challenges, making her the most successful chef in the top four.
