Great chefs, but the production is an absolute mess
28 November 2018 | by unfunfionnSee all my reviews

Firstly, I have nothing negative to say about the chefs or the food. All 24 are clearly phenomenal at what they do and it's a pleasure to witness them doing it, whatever the format.

However, the production of Final Table tries really hard to spoil that experience. It's so overblown to the point that it reduces the show to low-brow pretentiousness. It feels like the producers were trying to create another Gladiators rather than a cooking show. The show does a poor job at hiding how pointlessly stretched-out it is with the needless long pauses before decisions and cheap drama. They could instead easily have made a 10 episode series with more segments about the chefs, the ingredients, or the cuisines featured. Perhaps they spent all of their budget on the crazy set instead.

The presenter is also incredibly annoying. It feels like he got paid to shout and say 'final table' as often as possible, because he offers little else.

The show ends up feeling like little more than a thinly-veiled attempt to boost subscriptions in certain countries by focusing on their cuisines and progressing local chefs to the final rounds, as great as those chefs may be.

Overall it was a surprise just how bad this show was, considering Netflix actually has a pretty great pedigree of cooking shows.

Who honestly thought this was a good idea?
