In another installment of “What the heck are we doing with our lives?” A 10-year-old Connor Esterson is developing the script for a “Home Alone–meet-The-Godfather”-esque movie titled Little Wiseguy. Working alongside the preteen are Hollywood Oscar winner Nick Vallelonga and Bad Boys writer George Gallo, gearing up to pitch it to studios around town soon enough. Esterson however has many talents up his sleeve, he is not only a budding actor but also aspiring to become a director in Hollywood.

Stars: Zachary Levi, Gina Rodriguez, Billy Magnussen, Connor Esterson, Everly Carganilla | Written by Robert Rodriguez, Racer Rodriguez | Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Writer/director Robert Rodriguez returns to the Spy Kids well after a 12-year hiatus, with an all-new spy family but an all-too-familiar story. I say all-too-familiar as Spy Kids: Armageddon essentially retreads the same plot as the original film – two kids, Tony (Connor Esterson) and Patty (Everly Carganilla), grow up completely oblivious to the fact their parents, Terrence Tango (Zachary Levi) and Nora Torrez (Gina Rodriguez), are spies working for the Oss. Like I said, familiar, right?
Of course, there comes a day that the kids find out their parents are spies – the day their dad Terrence’s “Armageddon Code,” a code that lets him hack into any place, any device etc., is stolen by evil game developer Rey “The King” Kingston (Billy Magnussen) and he uses it to...

The “Spy Kids” are back, and director Robert Rodriguez is once again spearheading the franchise through a soft reboot — this time for Netflix.
The clever, kids-have-to-be-spys-after-their-spy-parents-are-captured conceit returns in “Spy Kids: Armageddon” (now streaming), the fifth film in the franchise and one yet again written and directed by series creator Rodriguez. This time it’s a new family, led by Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi, who are battling an evil game designer (Billy Magnussen). Thankfully, their kids (Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla) spring into action. It’s got a ton of humor, a ton of heart, some classically “Spy Kids”-y action and some brand-new gadgets. What more could you want?
TheWrap spoke to Rodriguez, whose first “Spy Kids” movie premiered in 2001, about returning to the franchise, what other of his movies he would want to revisit and whether there’ll be another “Alita: Battle Angel” movie.

Robert Rodriguez isn’t against bringing original Spy Kids stars Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara back for another film. But the director says the time between the latest installment, Armageddon, and 2011’s Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, meant that it was “important to just start the franchise fresh.”
The filmmaker spoke about his decision to launch the latest Spy Kids chapter with a completely new family — and new set of leading child stars — in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I wanted to re-establish a new family,” he said of the choice to cast Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla in the new Netflix film, out Friday. “Because it’d been so long [since 2011’s All the Time in the World], it was important to just start the franchise fresh and then go from there.”

Plot: When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.
Review: Robert Rodriguez has always had two distinct film output: mature genre offerings aimed at adult audiences and family-friendly action flicks aimed at the youngest viewers. While Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios has used in-house special effects work to deliver pulpy flicks like Machete and the recent Hypnotic, the full-blown CGI worlds of the Spy Kids films have given the indie filmmaker a playground to make every childhood fantasy come to life. After four films centered on the Cortez family of spies, Rodriguez and his son Racer Max have written a franchise reboot centered on two new pint-sized agents as they use their knowledge of video games to save their parents and the world.

Robert Rodriguez brings his kids action series back to life with pleasant, if visually flat, results
For a few late millennials, the Spy Kids franchise has assumed a sort of vaguely remembered, but beloved mantle. I was seven years old when the first film hit theaters or, more accurately for the target demographic, hit a child’s tentpoles of culture – Happy Meal toys, TV advertisements, whatever spy “gear” classmates brought in for show and tell. The movies, particularly the 2001 original, were wacky and grandiose, goofily futurist adventures with cartoonish stakes. If you were a kid, Spy Kids (along with the 2002 sequel and 2003 3D edition) were an ultimate fantasy, with sick gadgets and cool parents (international super spies played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino).
Spy Kids: Armageddon, Netflix’s reboot of the franchise with the original writer-director Robert Rodriguez, understands the wells of nostalgia it’s tapping, though it doesn’t always reach it.

There are movies for children, and then there are childish movies. The latest directorial venture of American director Robert Rodriguez titled Spy Kids: Armageddon seems to be way more tilted towards the latter type. Rodriguez has his own niche in filmmaking. He started with the Mexican milieu that he knew so well and made films such as El Mariachi and Desperado, and later went on to direct cult classics such as From Dusk Till Dawn and his masterpiece Sin City. His films are so different from one another that one look at his IMDb page will tell us that he isn’t interested in telling similar stories. Yet he seems to have a strong affinity with the Spy Kids universe. He directed the first one in 2001 and then made three more sequels in the coming years, with the last one being released in 2011. He has now returned with the fifth installment,...

Robert Rodriguez is a filmmaker who found a way to work his career on his own terms. It helps that he is practically self-sustaining with his own studio and insists on doing some of the biggest parts of productions himself. The filmmaker recently explored the Hitchcockian thriller world with his mind-bending suspense film, Hypnotic, with Ben Affleck. Rodriguez is also a family-oriented director in every sense. Not only has he had success with the family action series, Spy Kids, but he also involves his own family with his movies. His cousins have been featured in his films, his former wife continues to be a producing partner, and his sons are now joining him behind the camera.

In April, Netflix announced that Robert Rodriguez, the original director of the 2000s action films, signed on to write and direct an upcoming "Spy Kids" reboot movie. Skydance Media optioned the film rights to Netflix with the intention of reimagining the spy thriller for a modern audience, according to Variety.
Officially titled "Spy Kids: Armageddon," the new project will be the fifth installment in the "Spy Kids" franchise, following the original 2001 "Spy Kids" and it's three sequels: "Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," and "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World." If you've ever stared off into the distance pondering the complexities of Steve Buscemi's deeply existential quote in "Spy Kids 2," or if you're still waiting on that instant Happy Meal microwave to hit the market,...

"We have to find Mom and Dad, stop the bad guys, and save the world." (Again.) Netflix has revealed an announcement first look teaser for Spy Kids: Armageddon, the Netflix reboot of this movie franchise. Director Robert Rodriguez is back to re-launch the Spy Kids series for Netflix. The film serves as a reboot to the original Spy Kids franchise. All of the original movies are also directed by Rodriguez: Spy Kids in 2001, Spy Kids 2 in 2002, Spy Kids 3-D in 2003, (plus Sharkboy & Lavagirl in 2005), and then the oddball sequel Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 2011. A new family of spies arrives this September. Rodriguez reboots the beloved Spy Kids franchise, inspiring a new generation of young heroes and taking the spy game to the next level. One thing you can’t fault Robert Rodriguez for — he makes the movies he wants to make. The notorious do-it-yourself director found his way into the studio system by way of cutting down production costs by working a number of positions himself and creatively shooting around normally complicated set-ups. His bets usually paid off when his films would hit and make a profit, thanks to his ingenuity. Ever since, he’s existed with one foot inside as well as one foot outside of Hollywood. After The Book of Boba Fett and the recent thriller Hypnotic, Rodriguez has returned to his unlikely family franchise hit with Spy Kids: Armageddon.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.

"The Afterparty" never stops! Christopher Miller and Phil Lord's mystery-comedy debuted to acclaim last January on Apple TV+, and while it found an answer to the question of who killed the pop star Xavier (Dave Franco) in the final episode, detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) wasn't ready to call it quits just yet. Haddish and co-stars Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao are now set to return for a second season that'll feature a new ensemble, a new set of genre-skewing detours, and of course, a new murder.

Robert Rodriguez has found his new “Spy Kids” (and their parents). Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson have been cast as the franchise’s new family. They take over from Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, who starred in the first three “Spy Kids” movies.
The logline for the new movie is pure “Spy Kids” nuttiness: “When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.” Considering the previous movie’s knack for casting fun actors in the villain role, expect the evil Game Developer to be cast in a similarly delightful way.

Chris Miller came up with the idea for The Afterparty years ago, when he knew he wanted to create a murder mystery that showed different perspectives from the witnesses. Although the project was put on the back burner as he worked on films like The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street, the time span allowed Miller to come up with the unique idea of telling the story of each witness in a different genre. The new idea sparked interest from Apple TV+, which ordered an eight-episode series, and the show’s success has led to a second season with 10 episodes.

“The Afterparty” executive producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord remain committed to mixed media presentations. Sure, there’s the multi-genre format of their murder mystery series, but their ambitions are perhaps even better explained by Season 1 star Ben Schwartz’s unorthodox appearance at the show’s Emmy FYC event at Hollywood Legion on Saturday.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Maggie,” the Season 1 finale of “The Afterparty,” which debuted on Apple TV Plus on March 4.
The stars of “The Afterparty” have been lying to their families.
That’s because the comedic whodunnit, which hails from director-showrunner Chris Miller and executive producer Phil Lord, established a strict rule of secrecy from Day 1. But after Friday’s finale revealed the killer to be Ben Schwartz’s Yasper, the cast can finally come clean to their loved ones, and hundreds of Reddit detectives can hang up their investigative hats.
“I’ve been semi-playing werewolf with everybody,” Schwartz tells Variety. “I still haven’t told my parents. My dad thinks it’s Maggie [Everly Carganilla], the little girl. My mom thinks it’s Walt [Jamie Demetriou]. My agents and managers don’t know because Chris told me not to tell anyone, and I’m very good at keeping secrets.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Afterparty” Episode 8, “Maggie,” including the killer’s identity.]
“The Afterparty” has ended. The killer has been caught. But unlike his prison-bound character, the actor behind the “who” in “whodunit” can breathe a little easier — at last.
“I’ve been lying to people for a year now.”
That’s Ben Schwartz, the actor behind Yasper, an Av technician and aspiring musician who turned out to be the suspect everyone was looking for throughout a tense, clever, and altogether rewarding first season of Christopher Miller’s Apple TV+ murder-mystery.
After a long night of interrogations, Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner makes an arrest and gets a confession out of Yasper, who sent Xavier (Dave Franco) tumbling to his death earlier that morning. Why? The former bandmates held a mutual grudge since their break up, one Yasper was willing to forgive if the megastar formerly known as Eugene helped jumpstart his nascent music career.

We have a confession.
On The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 8, Detective Danner finally got the clues she needed to solve the mystery of who killed Xavier -- minutes before the arrival of Detective Germain.
It was a satisfying conclusion to a meticulously planned, incredibly entertaining series.
Spoilers ahead! Read on only if you've watched the finale!
At first, it seemed like we would get an entirely Maggie-centric episode. Her tale was over in five minutes, but it gave us many answers.
First, let it be said once again that Everly Carganilla is as adorable as child actors get. Her line delivery was spot-on.
I decided I better go tell daddy that he forgot to give me the fruit snacks since he’d really want to know that.

Buckle up -- it's going to be a hell of a ride.
On The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 2, Brett tells his side of the story, which clarifies some confusion but stirs up even more questions.
If there's anything to take away from this episode, it's that anyone can be the hero of a story if you know how to frame it.
Brett was not exactly a likable character in The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 1, but that was mainly from Aniq's point of view. But then, why would Aniq view his romantic interest's ex-husband favorably?
Even in his own story, Brett struggles with self-awareness and tends towards being immature and irresponsible. However, he sees himself as a badass father who's just trying to do right by his daughter. That's his narrative, and he's sticking to it.
It makes sense that Brett's story is told as an action movie. They are generally male fantasies,...

Netflix’s “The Chair” has revealed to Gold Derby that 12 cast members will be eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The series, which debuted in August 2021, was created by actress and writer Amanda Peet and stars four-time SAG Award winner Sandra Oh. “The Chair” follows an eccentric group of English professors as they navigate personal turmoil, office politics and the unique political and social challenges of academia in the 21st century. Befitting its academic setting, “The Chair” offers a doozy of a thesis statement.
“I feel like someone handed me a ticking time-bomb because they wanted to make sure a woman was holding it when it explodes,” says Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, played by the exhilarating Sandra Oh, in a moment of well-earned frustration about halfway through the Netflix limited series. The newly appointed chair of her university’s English department, Ji-Yoon is asked to tackle problem after problem at a dizzying pace. Some are institutional, ironed out only via a delicate balance of polite schmoozing and steadfast resolve. Others are personal, be it an inconvenient crush on a ragdoll of a professor (Jay Duplass) or behavioral issues with her obstinate young daughter (Everly Carganilla).

In a time when real-life clickbait articles about political showdowns on university campuses read like repetitive, unfunny satire, “The Chair” manages to bring a light touch to a topic that tends to be high on self-seriousness and low on actual stakes. It’s largely thanks to Sandra Oh’s ability to humanize anything that this Netflix limited series (from showrunner Amanda Peet and the producers of “Game of Thrones”) manages to avoid taking the lowest-hanging fruit at every turn.
