Hispanic television audiences in the United States are driving higher viewership to mainstream sports programming, and helping to generate interest in sports franchises that have typically been underrepresented in the country, according to a new report from Nielsen.
The report released earlier this week said record viewership for key events like the UEFA Champions League and Copa América soccer tournaments were driven largely by an uptick in Hispanic audiences tuning in to traditional linear and streaming TV.
According to Nielsen, Hispanic TV viewers accounted for 73 percent of the Copa América audience in 2016. This year, that number dipped to 53 percent — which Nielsen said was proof that the tournament was going mainstream.

Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese stars in a new “Wicked” teaser released this week. “There’s a lot of noise out there,” Reese says in a voiceover as she is photographed walking down a yellow brick road. “It can surround you, pull at you, and weigh you down.”
“But I’ve got other plans,” she continues as strains of “Defying Gravity” from the film’s soundtrack begin to play. “Defy gravity,” Reese continues. “Rise above the noise. Nothing’s going to bring me down.”
That’s followed by her hitting a shot as she barely leaves the ground, followed by footage from the film as “Defying Gravity” continues to play.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA record for assists by a rookie in a single season during a Sunday game against Seattle Storm.
The Iowa-hailing player surpassed the record previously held by Ticha Penicheiro, who had 225 assists in 1998 while playing for the Sacramento Monarchs.
“Super proud of you,” the Portuguese guard said in a video shared on X congratulating Clark. “I know the work that you put in. A lot of people always talked about your shooting. I was always mesmerized about your passing, your court vision and how you make your teammates better. So this record is in great hands. And continue to do what you do, continue to elevate your game and the women’s game and the WNBA.”
The WNBA season was shorter during Penicheiro’s rookie year, per The Athletic, but it took her 30 games to reach the 225 tally. Clark exceeded that mark with 28 games in the season,...

A fun part for fans ahead of each Dancing With the Stars season is trying to figure out which celebrities might be cast.
With Season 33 approaching, fans are speculating and excited about a popular Olympic medalist potentially joining the cast.
The show has featured Olympic stars in the past, including Laurie Hernandez, Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson, Adam Rippon, and Apolo Anton Ohno.
Each celebrity competitor also won their respective season of DWTS, showing dedication to tirelessly practicing to achieve a goal. In the case of the Olympics, it’s medals, and with DWTS, it’s the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
While the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, France, have featured gymnast Simone Biles, track star Noah Lyles, and NBA superstar LeBron James, it doesn’t seem any of them will compete on the dance television show.
Instead, fans spotted a clue potentially revealing that a recognizable rugby star will join the DWTS Season 33 cast.

The league already has deals finalized with NBC, Amazon and Disney, but can add up to two more rights packages to its total inventory.
The WNBA isn’t quite done making deals. That’s according to Front Office Sports, who reports that the league is getting closer to selling two additional rights packages after finalizing deals with NBCUniversal, Amazon and Disney in late July. The three packages already sold will fetch $200 million per year, and if it sells the other two packages it can make more than $260 million each season over the 11-year lifetime of the contracts.
Key Details: Fos reports that CBS and Ion, who already hold WNBA rights packages, are the two most likely to get the outstanding game parcels in the new deal. The new WNBA deals take hold after the 2025 season. The WNBA has discussed negotiating rights deals on its own but is sticking with the...

They arrived as stars but left as family. For Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, and Kiki Rice, their final college basketball season brought new heights of fame, as chronicled in the riveting ESPN series Full Court Press. Yet it was the intimate glimpses behind the headlines that viewers loved most. We witnessed life on and off the court in a way few sports doctors dare.
Of course, seeing three phenomena at the peak of their powers made for dazzling highlights. Clark bombed long threes in Iowa’s record Kinnick Stadium crowd. Cardoso owned the paint for championship South Carolina. And Rice dazzled UCLA fans with her all-court mastery. Their skills transformed the game.
But what stuck with viewers were the quieter moments. We saw Clark’s joy in Christmas celebrations with teammates, a brief escape from her relentless competitive fire. Rice opened up to a sports psychologist, reminding us stars also struggle with pressure and self-doubt.

Sue Bird, a 20-year WNBA star, said that the alleged hate toward Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark is just trash talk that’s misinterpreted.
Clark takes the floor today at the WNBA All-Star game that pits the league stars against Team USA, the women’s basketball team for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
“I think the majority of WNBA players with their play, with their talk, it was just competition, not hate for a person,” Bird said.
“Caitlin will go down as, whatever you want to call it, the one who made the change, this pivotal person,” added Bird, who retired in 2022. She was speaking during an appearance on the Good Game with Sarah Spain podcast on iHeart. “She will, 100 percent. But in other leagues … it was never like when LeBron (James) came, ‘Oh, Michael Jordan didn’t matter.’ And for some reason that happened, and it caused this whole thing.

The deals are reportedly worth $2.2 billion over the course of their contracts. This represents a massive raise for the WNBA, coming at a time when the value of women’s sports broadcasting agreements is decidedly on the rise.
Key Details: The deal pays an average of $200 million per season. The contract allows the WNBA to sell up to two more game packages to other outlets. ESPN, Amazon, and NBC have agreed to revisit the deals if they are undervalued three years from now.

Caitlin Clark made her reputation as a scorer. But she can also dish it out.
Clark set the WNBA record for the most assists in a single game tonight, recording 19 against the Dallas Wings.
The record previously was held by Courtney Vandersloot, who had 18 in 2020.
Clark had a chance to get 20 assists, but her pass in the paint in the closing seconds was picked off thanks to stout defense by Dallas. Clark finished with 24 points to go with her assists record.
Clark had 13 assists through three quarters, tying her previous career-high. She then ripped off six more in the fourth, giving her 11 in the second half alone.
The record wasn’t enough, though, as Clark’s Indiana Fever were upset by the Wings, who entered the contest at 5-19.
Clark now has done double digit assists in seven of her last nine games. It’s also the fourth time in...

It’s the fourth quarter, game on the line, shot clock running out: Who are you looking at to make that game-winning bucket? Kevin Durant or… Willy Wonka?
The NBA finalized new TV deals with Disney/ESPN, Amazon, and NBCUniversal and Peacock for a combined $76 billion over the next 11 years, according to a report first in The Athletic. It’s one of the richest sports rights agreements this side of the NFL, nearly tripling the NBA’s last TV deal.
And while that number sounds crazy, it may be the safer move.
When even franchise titles or starry originals don’t guarantee butts in seats, sports are appealing because they don’t carry the same risk and uncertainty as movies. Sports ratings have only grown, and Hollywood needs a slam dunk.
On-demand and streaming stripped broadcast and cable of nearly all value, leaving sports with a stranglehold on the entertainment industry.

This year isn’t likely to be remembered for its television. Sure, TV will play its part in setting the historical record, but in an election year that’s also an Olympics year that’s also the second year in which Ben Affleck lost J. Lo (supposedly!), television will be critical in how we process 2024’s big events more than it will be remembered for producing its own entertainment and/or artistry.
But boy, is it putting up a fight. The first half of 2024 is replete with admirable, ambitious, and downright astounding series. Lulu Wang’s “Expats” and Issa Lopez’s “True Detective: Night Country” kicked off the year with a staggering one-two combination. “Shōgun” was right on their heels, along with the surprise sensation “Baby Reindeer” and the long-anticipated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
As Emmy season approached, the hits just kept on coming: Comedy lovers got “Hacks,” “Girls5Eva,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley’s voice carries great weight, having just led the Gamecocks to an undefeated 2024 NCAA season.
On Saturday morning, Staley gave her opinion on a hot-button of the moment: the race for WNBA Rookie of the Year between Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and the equally impressive Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky.
Staley was asked about the ongoing race by TMZ. Her verdict: Right now, it’s Reese.
“They both are having great years. Don’t get me wrong,” Staley told TMZ Sports. “If I had to pick a Rookie of the Year at this time … today, it’s Angel. Not a doubt. What she’s been able to do with the double-doubles.
“But listen, the season is halfway through, and Caitlin is coming.”
Clark received the most votes for the All-Star Game next week. Reese has a WNBA record streak of 15 consecutive double-doubles.

Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Quinta Brunson called out Harrison Butker at the 2024 Espy Awards for his Benedictine College speech earlier this year — and now the Kansas City Chiefs kicker has responded.
During a segment at the sports awards show, the three women encouraged the audience to enjoy women’s sports the same way they would other sports because “they are sports,” Venus Williams said.
“Except you, Harrison Butker — we don’t need you,” Serena Williams added, as Brunson chimed in, “At all. Like, ever.”
Butker responded to their comments in a statement, via NBC Sports, saying, “I thought Mrs. Williams was a great host and applaud her for using her platform to express her beliefs on a variety of topics.”

Host Serena Williams got the 2024 Espys off to a fun start with her monologue that addressed rap beefs with Kendrick Lamar, Shohei Ohtani’s translator, Bronny James getting drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers and — in the biggest reaction on social — Caitlin Clark’s start to her WNBA career.
Williams entered the stage surrounded by people in tennis outfits.
“Caitlin Clark had an amazing year and is nominated for three awards,” Williams started her joke at the packed Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. “You are the Larry Bird in that you are an amazing player, you have ties to Indiana, and white people are really crazy about you.”
Clark, who was not at the show, was nominated for three awards: best women’s athlete, best record-breaking performance and best women’s college athlete.

Serena Williams joined her sister, Venus, and Quinta Brunson in calling out Pat McAfee for his comments about WNBA star Caitlin Clark earlier this year at the 2024 Espy Awards. The trio also took shots at Harrison Butker.
Onstage at the ESPYs show, host Serena shared the stage with Venus and Quinta for a segment celebrating this year’s rise in popularity of female sports, thanks in part to Clark, who was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft in April after rising to stardom while playing for the University of Iowa.
The trio of women reviewed a list of terms that are acceptable when referring to female athletes, among them being “athlete,” “champion” and “dumbass” (because, as Brunson noted, all athletes are sometimes dumbasses).
“Just don’t use the b-word,” the group said, to some cheers in the audience.

Prince Harry accepted the Pat Tillman Award at Thursday’s ESPYs ceremony following controversy regarding the foundation’s choice to honor him. The prince received the award in recognition of the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games.
“I stand here not as Prince Harry, Pat Tillman Award recipient, but rather a voice on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation and the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the Invictus Games Foundation a reality,” the prince said onstage. “This award belongs to them, not to me.”
Pat Tillman was a safety for the Arizona Cardinals who enlisted in the U.S. Army after the 9/11 attacks. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2004 in a friendly fire incident. His eponymous award is “given to a person with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes [his] legacy,” per ESPN.

ESPN May Allow Other Outlets to Share WNBA Finals Broadcasts; Will Warner Bros. Discovery Reach Out?
Speaking on a podcast at the end of June, ESPN exec Burke Magnus said he sees an ‘upside’ to sharing the WNBA Finals in the league’s next rights deal.
The WNBA is seeing its surge in popularity from the 2023 season not only carry over but intensify this year. The arrivals of rookie phenoms like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have people buzzing about the sport, and ESPN and ABC are hoping to see record-breaking ratings for the 2024 WNBA Finals no matter which teams end up making the championship round; Clark’s Indiana Fever and Reese’s Chicago Sky are currently fighting for the eighth and final playoff spot. The rise of interest in the WNBA may lead one to think that ESPN would guard its exclusivity for the Finals series, but we now have official word from company officials that that isn’t the case. Back in February, ESPN inked a five-year deal for the rights to NFL Flag, and the league now says that the championship games will get distribution that would make other professional sports leagues green with envy.
The flag finals will run on the ABC broadcast network, Disney Channel and Disney Xd, and it will stream on Disney+ in a further expansion of the streaming service’s live sports efforts. It will also stream on ESPN+ and NFL+, and air on ESPN Deportes.
ESPN itself will televise 32 hours of matches, with all games also streaming on ESPN+ and NFL+ and some games also to be played on ESPN2 and on YouTube.
The NFL says that 280 boys and girls teams are participating this year, with six international teams also set to compete.

The WNBA is taking the world by storm and not just because of the arrival of all-star Caitlin Clark. The WNBA has had a powerful influence over American culture for much longer than Clark’s first season. The new Prime Video documentary, “Power of the Dream,” tells the story of how the WNBA came together to influence the election of Democratic Georgia state Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock over the incumbent Georgia Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler after she criticized the WNBA’s embrace of the Black Lives Matter movement. The WNBA played a key role in Warnock’s election, and changed the landscape of basketball and U.S. politics forever. You can watch the documentary, “Power of the Dream” when it premieres on Tuesday, June 18 on Prime Video, which you can watch with a 30-Day Free Trial of Amazon Prime Video.

The last time the Chicago Sky played the Indiana Fever, they knocked Caitlin Clark to the ground with a blindside hip check, resulting in a foul that was later upgraded to a flagrant foul.
In today’s game, they moved slightly north on Clark’s body, as archrival Angel Reese was called for elbowing Clark in the head and knocking her to the ground. This time, there was no doubt on the intent, and a flagrant foul was immediately called.
Clark got the last laugh, though, as her Indiana Fever won, 91-83, winning two games in a row for the first time this season.
Clark had 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead her team. Reese finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. The two players have been rivals since their college days.
After the game, Reese had some bitter words about her foul and the game’s conduct.

Serena Williams thinks Caitlin Clark is handling the WNBA tumult well.
Williams spoke to reporters at the Tribeca Festival about her docuseries In the Arena: Serena Williams, which premiered earlier this week. During her session, the New York Post reports she was asked about Clark.
“I just love that she tries to stay grounded. She said that she doesn’t look at her social [media],” Williams said.
“I get it. I don’t look at it either. It’s so important to continue to do what she’s doing. No matter what other people do, if people are negative, it’s because they can’t do what you do, basically. Hopefully she’ll continue to do what she’s doing.”
Williams had gone through a similar crucible as a rising young tennis star.
“I was bullied,” Williams said. “Things that I had to go through, now people would be canceled for saying [what they did] back then.

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God told Bill Maher on Friday’s Real Time that his appeal is that his audience thinks he’s sincere in his beliefs.
Among his beliefs: that Caitlin Clark’s immediate impact on the WNBA is because – in a league where the majority of women are Black and there’s a large number of gay players – she’s different, and that makes her more of a spectacle, like Tiger Woods in golf or Eminem in hip-hop.
“Caitlin Clark has the ability to put asses in seats,” Charlamagne said. “There’s been plenty of white women basketball players that aren’t putting asses in seats.”
Still, he acknowledged there’s an inherent unfairness that comes with that. A’ja Wilson of the WNBA Las Vegas Stars has been a top player for several years, a two-time Mvp. Yet Clark got a huge deal with Nike in her first year,...
