Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” one of the buzziest movies to premiere so far at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, has sold to Searchlight in a huge $10 million deal.
Given the warm reception in Park City, the film sparked an all-night bidding war among several distributions to land global rights, with the deal closing early Sunday morning.
Eisenberg directed “A Real Pain” in addition to starring alongside Kieran Culkin. They play cousins whose tour through Poland in honor of their grandmother sparks some serious family rivalry. Their co-stars include Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy and Daniel Oreskes.

Searchlight Pictures is dreaming of Jonathan Majors. The studio has acquired the actor’s body-building feature Magazine Dreams, which earned strong reviews last month at Sundance.
Majors plays Killian Maddox, a man determined to make it in the world of body building even as he faces a number of struggles, from dealing with feelings of alienation, anger issues and looking after his ailing grandfather.
Elijah Bynum wrote and directed the feature. He previously made Hot Summer Nights, starring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, which was released by A24 after a South by Southwest debut.
“We are very proud to bring Elijah’s powerful film to the world,” said Searchlight presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “Jonathan’s tour-de-force performance, both physically and emotionally, affected us in profound ways.”
Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige and Mike O’Hear also star in Magazine Dreams, which is produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy and Jeffrey Soros.

Searchlight Studios has nabbed U.S. rights to “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” a comedy about a widow who hires a sex worker that premiered at this year’s virtual edition of Sundance. The indie label is looking to push Oscar-winner Emma Thompson into the awards race and will debut the film exclusively on Hulu, its corporate cousin post-Fox’s sale to Disney.
The sale, which was for $7.5 million, comes in the middle of a lackluster sales market for Sundance movies. Cooper Raiff’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” does have several potential buyers circling, including streamers, and other films are generating some interest. Sony Pictures Classics purchased “Living,” an awards-y film with Bill Nighy, and Nat Geo has been active, buying “Fire of Love.” Aside from that…glacially slowwwwwww-going. No wonder sales agents were bent out of shape when Sundance went virtual. It makes their job so much harder...

As Hollywood gears up to head to Park City, Utah, for the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, one of the questions on everyone’s mind is how busy prominent streamers like Netflix and burgeoning platforms like Apple and Disney+ will be on Main Street.
Two years ago, Netflix and Amazon Studios dominated the indie marketplace with big-dollar acquisitions like “Mudbound” and “The Big Sick.” Last year, however, they had a quieter festival. Netflix picked up a handful of films like “The Kindergarten Teacher,” and acquired others well after the festival, while Amazon bought zilch.
Many indie film buyers and sellers believe that Netflix and Amazon have shifted their focus to their own production as opposed to acquiring titles, but that doesn’t mean the big streamers won’t pounce on a title or two that catches its team’s fancy.
