Michael Douglas has starred in some of the most iconic erotic thrillers ever made, from “Basic Instinct” to “Fatal Attraction,” so he knows a thing or two about crafting a memorable movie sex scene. In a new interview with The Telegraph, the actor gave his honest opinion about intimacy coordinators becoming the new normal in Hollywood when it comes to filming intimate moments on set.
“I’m past the age where I’ve got to worry about that. But it’s interesting with all the intimacy coordinators,” Douglas said when the topic of sex scenes came up during the interview. “It feels like executives taking control away from filmmakers — but there have been some terrible faux pas and harassment.”
“Sex scenes are like fight scenes, it’s all choreographed,” Douglas continued. “In my experience, you take responsibility as the man to make sure the woman is comfortable, you talk it through.

Has there ever been a more bonkers superhero than Deadpool? Equal parts violent and zany, this lethal mercenary, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth," first appeared in the "New Mutants" comic series in December 1990, albeit as a villain. Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) went on to star in his own mini-series. He eventually gained notoriety for his dark humor, meta-commentary, and affinity for breaking the fourth wall. Over the years, Deadpool has teamed up with or battled alongside Marvel's hero gallery and has since become one of the brand's most popular characters. In fact, according to Gitnux Marketdata Report, he's the most liked character on Facebook. So take that, Iron Man!
The release of 2016's "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds as Wilson, further cemented the character's popularity. Uniquely, this was the actor's second stint in the role, though the less said about his...

The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.
The British actor is now 19 and I’m meeting him once again over Zoom — this time, he’s in his London-area home — for this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. He’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Franklin.” The limited series follows Benjamin Franklin,...

Plot: In December 1776, Benjamin Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments. But his passion and power are put to the test when he embarks on a secret mission to France—with the fate of American independence hanging in the balance.
Review: Of all the television and big screen depictions of the Revolutionary War and the early days of the United States, few have focused specifically on Benjamin Franklin. The scientist, inventor, scholar, and dignitary has been a key character in many projects, notably played by Tom Wilkinson in HBO’s John Adams and by Howard De Silva in the musical 1776, but always as a supporting player. Despite being one of the Founding Fathers and having his iconic visage gracing the one hundred dollar bill, the first narrative production centered on his life is just now being released. Alert: Mpu is at its best when it brings compelling cases and victims forward.
And Alert: Missing Persons Unit Season 2 Episode 4 not only delivered on both but succeeded at organically shedding light on some of the most vulnerable victims of abduction, exploitation, and trafficking.
While the series' premise is finding missing individuals, like other shows of the same caliber (Found), Mpu doesn't often deliver on the "ripped from the headlines" vibes of capturing the real nitty gritty of missing persons.
There are so many different subgenres of individuals who slip through the cracks.
Anyone with a cursory knowledge of statistics on abductions and missing persons is aware of the most vulnerable parties: children, teens, the mentally ill, the unhoused, the Lbgtq+ community, women of color, particularly Indigenous and Black women, and so forth.
Somehow, despite its premise, Alert often skirts around those topics where other procedurals dive headfirst into them.

Did we see that correctly? Is Nikki Batista mobbed up?
Outside of the fact that Dania Ramirez would be amazing and gorgeous executing (pardon the pun) a Mob Wives parody, Alert: Missing Persons Unit Season 2 Episode 2, giving us this new insight into Nikki's past has certainly piqued interest.
There's no way that's the last we've seen of the dangerously dashing Charlie McGannon, right?
The throughlines for the season are difficult to assess just yet beyond a throwaway moment, suggesting that Jay is still looking into that bombing.
But the hour did bring out more of Kemi's original quirk and unique quality while having it tested with someone who is just as quirky as her and twice as awkward.
In some ways, the hour settled into itself and had more of the vibes from Alert: Mpu Season 1.
We had an unusual case that escalated rather quickly, evolving into something one...

Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty” parodied not one but two classic Stephen King stories in this past Sunday night’s new episode, which was titled “Rickfending Your Mort.”
In the episode, Rick hires an Observer to verify Morty’s homemade punch cards, but the cosmic all-seeing entity won’t stop playing clips from their lives out of spite.
The episode features clips from wild “Rick and Morty” adventures we’ve never actually seen before, one of which is titled “Maximum Overdrive With Clothes.”
The segment parodies the 1986 horror movie directed by Stephen King, only in this particular universe, it’s clothes that gain sentience and go on the attack.
In the very same episode, Rick and Morty find themselves in Stephen King’s infamous Pet Sematary, where they humorously test the science of the sour ground.

So, how accurate are some of those old sayings? Well, in the case of “You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family”, well…yes, 100 percent. That’s especially true with siblings, going all the way back to Cain and Abel. Sure brothers battle, but is that ditto for sisters? This weekend’s new comedy uses that as its “springboard”. These two ladies couldn’t be more different or argumentative, Fortunately, they’re both hilarious, and their characters are played by two talented actresses. You see, the elder is a party gal while the other is saddled with the title Quiz Lady.
We first meet the aforementioned Qz as a timid eight-year-old indulging in her favorite weekday activity, watching the live TV show “Can’t Stop the Quiz” hosted by true hero Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell). And she pretty much aces all the questions despite her older...

Chances are, you know someone like “Quiz Lady” Anne Yum. As played by Awkwafina, this socially awkward young woman works a boring Cpa job by day, doing her best to blend in with the gray walls of her cubicle. But every evening at the same hour, Anne tunes in to her favorite game show and becomes a star — even if her flatulent old pug, Mr. Linguini, is the only witness — as she answers every question quickly and correctly.
The kind of comedy perfectly suited to the comfort of one’s own couch, Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady” is the story of how, with the help of her outrageously extroverted older sister, Jenny (Sandra Oh), Anne overcomes her anxiety and agrees to appear as a contestant on “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” So what if she trips up in front of idol/host Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell) when she finally reaches...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Hulu releases the film on its streaming platform on Friday, November 3.
The 17-year gap between Awkwafina and Sandra Oh doesn’t do much to hinder their believability as siblings in the straight-down-the-middle comedy “Quiz Lady,” in part because that was never the point. The against-type casting wants to be appreciated for subverting the obvious placement, an inside joke opened to all viewers familiar with Oh’s résumé of chronic high achievers and Awkwafina’s affinity for slackers with an affinity for the chronic.
As screwup big sis and whirlwind of chaos Jenny, Oh rocks the big pants and language about “manifesting” borrowed from girls a little less than half her age, while Awkwafina has the wardrobe, daily routine, and life’s-been-lived defeatism of a “98-year-old spinster” as the junior yet far more mature Anne. They mix like Fireball and water,...

Game shows have become a weird new sub-genre at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, with Anna Kendrick telling the somewhat true story of a serial killer who appeared on “The Dating Game” in “Woman of the Hour” and the documentary “The Contestant” detailing a truly bizarre Japanese reality show that required its player to live naked in a room for more than a year winning prizes in order to survive.
And because it takes three to make a trend, Saturday night at TIFF brought Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady,” a spirited if slight comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as mismatched sisters whose fate is bound up in a nightly game show called “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” Both actresses try hard to keep this energetic concoction afloat, although the future of this Disney/20th Century property seems healthier on a streaming outlet than in theaters. (The plan is for a Nov.

Rita Gardner, an original cast member of the long-running Off Broadway phenomenon The Fantasticks, died Saturday of leukemia at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. She was 87.
Gardner’s death was announced by her friend and colleague Alex Rybeck on Facebook.
In 1960, Gardner, who had recently appeared Off Broadway in the Jerry Herman musical review Nightcap, was cast in what would be her signature role: Luisa, or “The Girl,” in the Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones musical The Fantasticks. Based loosely on Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play The Romancers, the musical told the allegorical story of two fathers who trick their children – The Girl, Luisa, and The Boy, Matt – into falling in love by pretending to oppose the union.

Joe Biden Warns That Donald Trump And Maga Extremism Threaten “The Very Foundations Of Our Republic”
Joe Biden’s speech in Philadelphia on Thursday evening was a full-blown attack on Donald Trump and Maga Republicans that “represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.”
Despite White House suggestions that the address would not be political, it’s hard to not see how it would not be seen through a partisan lens, or that it even makes any difference.
Just as the midterms kick into high gear, Biden turned the attention on his 2020 rival, Trump, who, by endorsing candidates like Dr. Oz and Blake Masters, has given Democrats new hopes of avoiding a wipeout by highlighting their opponents’ weaknesses and wild statements.
Biden’s pitch was that, while he’s worked with plenty of Republicans when he was in the Senate and during his presidency, the driving force of the party is Trump, with an agenda of denying the results of free and fair elections and,...

Australia’s Cumulus VFX has received a state government grant of A$1 million to relocate within New South Wales from Byron Bay to Ballina, where it will be linked to the Byron Studios that are now in development.
The move is just the latest in a succession of developments that are intended to keep Australia’s film and TV production sectors competitive.
The relocation and the grant will allow Cumulus to build larger premises and add 50 additional jobs, Nsw’s Parliamentary Secretary for Energy and the Arts Ben Franklin said.
“This funding boost will assist in the enhanced attraction and servicing of clients in Australia and internationally and is a pivotal first step in accelerating our strategic partnership with Byron Studios through the development and provision of critical infrastructure for the post production and Visual Effects sector in the Northern Rivers,” said Cumulus VFX founder and CEO, Will Gammon.

As Benjamin Franklin might have said, if he had witnessed the rise and continued growth of modern cinema, "Nothing is certain but death and taxes. And that most movies, if they make a reasonable profit, will get sequels whether they need one or not."
Anachronistic Ben Franklin has it spot on. Hefty profits can magically transform the most standalone and self-contained movies into a trilogy, tetralogy, or worse. We have proof. Some of the films on this list are completely unnecessary -- they were clearly made to satisfy shareholders, not because a cinema audience was clamoring for them. Some are here because, frankly, they're so bad that they...

Like finding a grubby, balled-up bill in your spangly g-string and uncrumpling it to discover doughy old Ben Franklin staring benignly back at you, Ana Lily Amirpour‘s third feature is a sweet, scuzzy surprise made all the sweeter/scuzzier because you don’t know quite what you did to deserve it. Certainly, at the Venice Film Festival –where “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” snuck into competition – giggling into one’s mask at its garish but gladhearted genre excesses felt like getting away with something naughty.

Seth Meyers isn’t here for the right-wing “bulls—.” Not after the latest shootings. On Wednesday’s “Late Show,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum condemned conservative Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity’s story selection in the wake of the recent tragedy in Colorado.
“On Monday, Fox News barely covered the horrific Boulder shootings in primetime,” Meyers said during his “A Closer Look” segment.
“Apparently,” Hannity considered Joe Biden tripping on the stairs of Air Force One “much more important,” Meyers continued. “My God, get your priorities straight.”
Yeah, Seth was fired up last night.
To be fair to “Hannity,” Monday’s show did (eventually) cover the Boulder shooting. Alicia Acuna was live on the scene immediately following a police press conference.
But that was not enough for Meyers.
“You guys repeat the same bulls— line every time we go through this awful ritual, that gun safety advocates are somehow rushing to politicize it,...

‘I Have No Idea What He’s Doing’: Trump’s Old Impeachment Lawyer Rips Trump’s New Impeachment Lawyer
Washington — On day one of the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, House Democrats on Tuesday afternoon laid out their case for why the Senate should proceed with an impeachment trial against a former president, citing the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the writings of legal scholars of all ideologies. Afterward, attorney Bruce Castor, a member of Trump’s defense team, stepped up to microphone. What ensued was a meandering and at times incoherent legal argument from Castor, one that by turns flattered the senators in attendance (“senators are family...

This time of year family’s at the forefront of the thoughts of many. Aside from being together (tough right now for some), the matriarch or patriarch is thinking about how to keep the home crew safe from harm and secure in their toasty beds. Unlike the Garrity clan from this week’s other big release Greenland, the Sharpe’s isn’t dealing with a planet-killing comet. His fears arise from the possible onslaught of stealthy intruders in the dead of night. It’s too bad that he doesn’t recall the quote from one of the founding fathers (maybe more of a cool uncle), Ben Franklin: “Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”. Still, it probably didn’t occur to him that his fears could inspire his whole “unit” to succumb to a Bad Impulse.

Bob Kaliban, a veteran voice actor and former president of the New York branch of the Screen Actors Guild, died December 12. He was 87.
Kaliban’s voice-over career spanned over 50 years and thousands of commercials, but he perhaps was best known for his long-running role as the “Ty-d-Bol Man,” the company’s nautically attired spokesman.
Born on November 6, 1933, in Lisbon, Iowa, he moved with his wife Pat to Garden City, NY, 50 years ago to raise their three children while Kaliban pursued a career on Broadway. He would go on to have roles in the 1960s shows How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Ben Franklin in Paris and The Conquering Hero.
He joined SAG in 1961 and AFTRA in 1962, appearing in such films as Brighton Beach Memoirs and Lovers and Other Strangers and on television shows including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tracey Ullman Show and Law & Order.

Stephen Colbert ripped President Donald Trump’s months-long criticism of using absentee ballots in the 2020 presidential election between him and Joe Biden, instead pushing Maga supporters to show up and vote for him in person next Tuesday amid the pandemic. Colbert called this move “the last act” of Potus’s “death cult.”
“The virus surge could have a big effect on Trump voters,” Colbert said during Tuesday’s “Late Show” monologue. “So far, 66 million people have voted early. In fact, projections indicate the majority of ballots will be cast before Election Day for the first time in history. As Ben Franklin so wisely put it, ‘Early to bed and early to vote, get him out of the White House before he digs a moat.'”
Colbert continued: “Most of the early voting has gone to the Democrats and on the other side, Trump has spent months warning his supporters against voting by mail.

Documentarian Ken Burns is partnering with the Library of Congress and two philanthropic organizations to present a new award to “Flannery,” a documentary about Flannery O’Connor.
Filmmaker Elizabeth Coffman and Jesuit priest Mark Bosco will be presented the first Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film on Oct. 17 at the library. The award includes a $200,000 grant to finish the film.
“‘Flannery’ is an extraordinary documentary that allows us to follow the creative process of one of our country’s greatest writers,” Burns said. “It also provides us a glimpse into her life, including her Catholic faith, her unusual sensitivity to race as a Southern white woman, and her daily struggles with illness and the prospect and reality of an early mortality. Steven Soderbergh excels at exploring the complex systems governing modern society with a delicious ironic tone. With “The Laundromat,” that tendency reaches a grandiloquent extreme. The director’s funny, searing look at the Panama Papers scandal unleashes a cavalcade of goofy fourth-wall-breaking explanations about shell companies, corporate tax laws, and offshore accounts. It has a gun-toting Meryl Streep shooting up a fraudulent insurance company, primitive cavemen to explore the origins of supply and demand, and a cameo by Will Forte as “Doomed Gringo #1.” There’s no telling where this movie will go in its quest to shake up a dense subject.
Needless to say, “The Laundromat” stuffs a lot of information into 95 minutes. The slapdash narrative doesn’t always click, and some of the devices are so on-the-nose one can practically hear Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns cackling at their cleverness. At the same time, , so that even the...

There’s a certain tingle that sets in when you realize that a thriller is naturalistic enough not to rely on thriller tricks. It means that you may be denied some of the knee-jerk pleasures audiences have come to expect — the jump scares and violent climaxes. The tradeoff is that it’s a lot easier to place yourself in the main characters’ shoes, to imagine what they’re going through as something that might actually be happening. And that, ironically, just ups the thriller juice.
“Blow the Man Down,” directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (it’s their first feature), is a drama of murder, sex, and small-town secrets set in Easter Cove, a fishing village in Maine that brings to mind the windswept coastal town of “Manchester by the Sea” — in fact, the place is so tiny and barren and gnarled it makes Manchester by the Sea look like Rome.

Harvard historian and New Yorker writer Jill Lepore’s latest book, These Truths: a History of the United States, is an epic, sweeping and often disquieting look at the nation’s past. The 800-page opus, starting in the 1500s and moving along briskly to Donald Trump, also serves as a liberal cri de coeur – an answer to conservative claims on the stewardship of our history, our founding principles and especially the Constitution.
Lepore, and Thomas Jefferson, argue that three central principals bind the American experiment: political equality, natural rights and popular sovereignty.
