Neil Young and Crazy Horse are about halfway through their North American tour, and there’s already a strong fan consensus that this is their best run in recent memory, perhaps even going back to the Nineties grunge era they helped kickstart. A big factor at play is the addition of guitarist Micah Nelson, who has deep respect for the material and an uncanny ability to emulate the distinct styles of both Danny Whitten and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, his two main predecessors in the band.

Shortly after the dissolution of Buffalo Springfield in 1968, Neil Young teamed up with the core members of struggling L.A. rock band the Rockets, renamed them Crazy Horse, and spent the next five decades working alongside them. Their first record was 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, featuring classics like “Down By The River” and “Cowgirl In The Sand.”
But their early recording sessions produced a lot more music than the seven songs on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and Young is finally sharing this music on June 28 with the release of Early Daze.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse played Firstbank Amphitheater in Franklin, Tennessee, Thursday evening after a one-night rain delay. They rewarded the patient fans with a wild, extended set packed with surprises.

Neil Young played his “Love Earth Tour” kick-off show with Crazy Horse at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre on Wednesday night (April 24th).
The 14-song setlist primarily consisted of Young’s most beloved hits, including “Down by the River,” “Cortez the Killer,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Powderfinger,” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).” Notably, “Cortez the Killer” featured Young singing some of the song’s original lyrics from a manuscript that he only recently rediscovered.

In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse, and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he...

From a certain perspective, Micah Nelson’s entire life has been building up to the Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour this summer, where he’ll be taking over for Nils Lofgren as the group’s new guitarist. As the youngest son of Willie Nelson, Micah, 33, has been exposed to Young’s catalog for longer than he can even remember. “Neil’s music always sort of being around in the periphery,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I grew up going to Farm Aid every year, so he was always this sort of figure,...

Willie Nelson stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night to perform “I Never Cared for You.” The track appears on Nelson’s upcoming greatest hits collection, which is set to drop this Friday — just ahead of his long overdue induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The Red Headed Stranger took the stage with a full band (including his son and frequent collaborator Micah Nelson) and gave a spirited rendition of the 1964 song. His delivery added an extra bite to lyrics like, “Your heart has been forewarned all men will lie to you.” Replay the full performance below.
Nelson has a long history with Colbert dating back to the latter’s years on The Colbert Report. Back in 2008, Nelson and Colbert channeled David Bowie and Bing Crosby on an original song called “Little Dealer Boy” for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!

Just call them the Rolling Stoners.
You know you are music royalty when Keith Richards shows up to pay his respects. And the Rolling Stones icon was on hand Sunday for the second and final night of Willie Nelson’s epic, 90th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
At 79, Richards was the youngster in this pairing of living legends, and the two harmonized sweetly on two songs: Waylon Jennings’ “We Had It All” and the late outlaw Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever,” particularly poignant with its refrain, “Just like the songs I leave behind me / I’m gonna live forever, now.”
The Richards surprise came shortly after 10:00 p.m. on this cool, overcast night in the hills above Hollywood, nearly three-and-a-half hours into the evening’s celebration.

Neil Young made an appearance at the United For Old Growth march and rally Saturday in Victoria, British Columbia, where he played “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold” for the crowd. It was his first live appearance since Farm Aid in September 2019.
The rally was aimed at protecting old-growth trees and promoting “forest stewardship.” “I’m only here for those trees up there,” Young told the audience. “It’s a precious, sacred thing, these old trees. They show us the power of nature when we are being threatened. They show us the past.

After a two-year break because of the pandemic, this year’s Luck Reunion, the daylong gotta-see-it-to-believe-it festival at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch outside of Austin, was already destined to be special. Fans and artists alike were eager to commune in one of the most magical festival settings in the country. But the death of Bobbie Nelson, Willie’s older sister, last week at age 91 increased the emotional weight.

Bobbie Nelson, an original member of her younger brother Willie Nelson’s Family Band, has died. She was 91.
Nelson, whose traditional yet graceful piano playing was a key component of Nelson’s live show, died Thursday morning surrounded by family, according to a statement from the Nelson family. “Her elegance, grace, beauty and talent made this world a better place. She was the first member of Willie’s band, as his pianist and singer. Our hearts are broken and she will be deeply missed. But we are so lucky to...

There’s an inherent romanticism to the cowboy archetype: a restless wanderer, perpetually in search of his next heroic adventure somewhere in the American southwest. Billy Joe Shaver turned that idea upside down in his 1981 song “We Are the Cowboys,” pointing out that cowboys are just average folks of all stripes — “Texicans, Mexicans, black men and Jews” — and their heroism comes in fighting everyday injustices, from hunger to violence.
Willie Nelson covers the song on his upcoming album, First Rose of Spring, and released a video for the track on Friday.

Willie Nelson doesn’t turn 87 for another week, but Nathaniel Rateliff is already celebrating. The singer, songwriter, and leader of his band the Night Sweats has released the joyful track “Willie’s Birthday Song.” Featuring Nelson’s sister Bobbi Nelson on piano and his longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael, the song shouts out many of the Red Headed Stranger’s most famous song titles and melodies.

The eighth annual Luck Reunion was supposed to draw around 4,000 people to Willie Nelson’s Texas ranch this week, with a lineup that included Nelson, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff, and more. Those plans, of course, went out the window due to Covid-19.
Instead of canceling altogether, the small Luck Team — headed up by founders Matt Bizer and Ellee Fletcher — decided to get creative, reviving the festival as a livestream concert, with performers broadcasting from their homes for charity. The result was more impactful than any traditional festival could have been.

Today, 4,000 people were supposed to descend on Willie Nelson’s Texas ranch for the Luck Reunion, one of the most intimate and thrilling music festivals of the year. That plan had be put on hold due to the coronavirus, but instead performers — including Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Jewel, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, Margo Price, and others — will be performing via livestream.
Micah Nelson, who performs as Particle Kid, will also perform. Micah has put out a series of loose, wild psychedelic albums in the past few years that includes the excellent just-released ‘Live!

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real had a lot of touring lined up behind their new album Naked Garden (out March 27th), before our national emergency caused them to put those plans on hold. One of those shows was the Luck Reunion, a huge festival held at his dad Willie Nelson’s ranch that was supposed to take place on March 19th. Instead, Luck will be revived as a free livestream that will include Willie, Lukas and Micah Nelson, Jewel, Nathaniel Rateliff, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, Lucinda Williams, Tre Burt,...

The free livestream, filmed by many of the artists themselves, will take place Thursday, March 19th at 6 p.m. Ct.

Willie Nelson was the 2019 honoree when the Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing held its annual Grammy Week celebration on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Recognizing the “artistic achievements and creative genius” of the Country Music Hall of Fame member, the event featured remarks from Kacey Musgraves, who praised Nelson’s unexpected role as a unifier. “He has this really unique ability to unite and really bring people together. It’s unlike any artist I can think of,” she said. “Underdogs, outliers, Republicans, rappers, presidents. Everyone loves Willie.”

Now is the time to register for a weekend of philanthropy, music and fun hosted by Scott Medlock, an internationally renowned sports artist, and Robby Krieger, legendary guitarist for The Doors, from Oct. 27-29, in Malibu, California.
The eleventh annual Scott Medlock-Robby Krieger Golf Classic and All-Star Concert will kick off with a 20-mile Rock ‘n’ Ride on Saturday, Oct. 27, followed by the All-Star Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Saddlerock Ranch and the Rock & Roll Golf Classic with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29.
Longtime friends Medlock and Krieger organized the events to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. At his annual 4th of July Picnic near Austin earlier this summer, Willie Nelson welcomed Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke onstage to join him on guitar for set-closing renditions of “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” There’s a good chance that the country icon and galvanizing Democratic politician will re-create the moment later this month when Nelson headlines a concert and rally for O’Rourke in Austin.

For a guy who has never been afraid to take creative risks, it should come as no surprise that Neil Young is starring in a Western. In the first trailer for “Paradox,” a Netflix movie directed by Young’s girlfriend Daryl Hannah, the rocker takes on a role that would make Clint Eastwood proud. Touted as “an unrealistic tale of music and love” and set “sometime in the future past,” the trailer sees Young, who plays the ominous Man in the Black Hat, along with Lukas and Micah Nelson (Willie Nelson’s sons), who play the Particle Kid and Jail Time, respectively, are...

"The man in the black hat... I heard he can be kind of shady." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a film titled Paradox, the feature directorial debut of actress Daryl Hannah, which is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this month. Paradox is described as a "loud poem", a "whimsical western tale of music and love" where "time is fluid." The full cast features legendary musician Neil Young, along with Lukas Nelson, Micah Nelson, Corey McCormick, Anthony LoGerfo, Tato Melgar (of the band Promise of the Real), with Willie Nelson, Charris Ford, and Dulcie Clarkson Ford. This looks like a crazy fun, hyper-real, and totally mesmerizing mash-up of music and story. This also seems like something that would be best seen on the big screen (alas, Netflix) with a bunch of friends chilling out with beers and good vibes. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Daryl Hannah's Paradox,...

You say “a loud poem” starring Neil Young, and we say, “okay, but just how loud?” Daryl Hannah’s directorial debut, which will have its world premiere at the extremely-appropriate-for-a-music-movie SXSW Film Festival later this week, has now unleashed its first trailer. The film was picked up by Netflix ahead of its debut, and will hit the streaming service by the end of the month.
Billed by its new distributor as “a fantasy, a loud poem and a free-spirited tale of music and love,” the film doesn’t appear to fit neatly into any kind of box. And it’s sure as hell not just some rock doc focused on a beloved icon’s golden years. It’s not even a doc.
