Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive is by far my favourite film of the year. By so far.
It very much deservedly won him the Best Director Award when it debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival back in May. And, in my opinion, it is quite simply one of the most awesome and coolest movies ever made.
Though it didn’t do as well as it should have at the box office, earning $43m., it still more than trebled its $13m. budget, which is an impressive accomplishment to make, especially with an 18-/R-rated film (a rating it very much both deserves and enjoys).
Ryan Gosling gives arguably the best performance of his career to date, with tremendous supporting performances from Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Albert Brooks – the last of which is tipped to having a shot at the Best Supporting Actor...

If titles like Mangled Meat and Super Fetus and Depraved don't clue you in to the fact that Deadite Press (deaditepress.com) is all about hardcore horror, then the covers will remove all doubt. There's a flayed corpse fronting Bryan Smith's Highways to Hell, and a helmeted, faceless nightmare on the cover of Dave Brockie's Wharghoul, and I refuse to even speculate about what exactly the screaming….thing is on the cover of Wrath James White's His Pain. I can barely stand to look at it. The point is, Deadite Press wears its intentions right on its torn and bloody sleeves, and that's a mighty refreshing change of pace in a world where most mainstream publishers decline to even put the word...

It has become quite obvious, now, that one must watch his or her words when starring in a "Transformers" movies, especially when the desire to draw vile dictators into conversation grows strong. See: Fox, Megan, and her Steven Spielberg-mandated firing.
But as her "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," replacement, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, soon learned, there's more than just verbal traps to be avoided while filming one of Michael Bay's blow-em-up blockbusters. The warning came from her on-screen love interest, series star, Shia Labeouf.
“Shia made it clear this wasn’t just about becoming a movie star. The shooting schedule was going to be grueling," Huntington-Whiteley told Women's Health Magazine, which she covers this month. And she confirmed that her co-star was right; their shoot in Chicago was anything but easy. “You’re in the sun all day long—dirty and smelly. It was like boot camp.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is currently making it’s way around the globe on it’s press tour while it’s released in every country that has a cinema. Our coverage of the movie has been rather extensive and much of that is thanks to Upbeat who have been fantastic at giving us interviews. The latest interview conducted exclusively for us is with mega-Producer, Jerry Bruckheimer who regular readers of the site will know is one of my favourites! As well as the previous three pirates movies, his body of work includes Top Gun, Armageddon, Crimson Tide, The Rock, Con Air, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys and Black Hawk Down to name but a few.
This latest movie sees him reunited with Disney for the fourth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and James White interviews the man himself!

Sony have been kind enough to give us the opportunity to debut these new images from their new movie, Faster. The movie hits UK cinemas 25th March, is directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson, Maggie Grace, Jennifer Carpenter, Tom Berenger, Billy Bob Thornton, Courtney Gains.
Synopsis: After 10 years in prison, Driver (Dwayne Johnson) has a singular focus — to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he’s finally on his mission…but with two men on his trail — a veteran cop (Billy Bob Thornton) just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) with a flair for the art of killing and newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It’s a do or die race to the list’s finish...

Courteney Cox‘s holidays just got a little bit tougher. As if her public separation from husband David Arquette wasn’t enough, the Cougar Town actress was recently served with a “chilling” document: her daughter Coco Riley‘s Christmas list.
“She wants a puppy!” Cox, 46, tells People with a laugh. “Which is unfortunate because we have two dogs.”
But with the 6-year-old landing firmly on Santa’s nice list, the actress seems resigned to her fate of a three-dog home, and negotiations between the two parties have already cleared their first hurdle.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway’s new romance, Love & Other Drugs, is arguably the sexiest movie of the year. Throughout the R-rated comedic drama (in theaters Nov. 24), they reveal nearly every inch of their enviably toned bodies. So it makes sense that their photo shoot for this week’s cover of EW would be equally steamy. In fact, the duo’s flesh-baring photo session was so sensual that we decided to put out three separate covers.
Photographer James White, who shot Gyllenhaal and Hathaway in New York, says the costars had an easy rapport. “I thought they’d be a...

To mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the massive underground and obscure film DVD collection Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film, 1893-1941, curator Bruce Posner presents a night of obscure and rarely publicly screened films, including several classics of the avant-garde.
Included in the program is what is considered the first underground film produced in the U.S.: Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand’s Manhatta. Completed in 1921, Manhatta is a visual poem celebrating the architecture of NYC.
During that same time period, the early avant-garde was in full swing in Europe and tonight’s program will also include several of that era’s most famous works, such as Man Ray’s Le Retour à la raison (Return to Reason), Marcel Duchamp’s Anémic cinéma, and Fernand Léger’s Ballet mécanique. (To...

Women-led films often attract sexist derision. Yet critics rave over male films such as the execrable Hot Tub Time Machine. Why the double standard?
I didn't enjoy Sex and the City 2. The script was blunt and repetitive, the characterisation illogical, the set-pieces overlong, the direction sloppy, the tone erratic. The scenes in Abu Dhabi were shallow, baffling and ignorant. Writer/director Michael Patrick King now has to tote this big glittery cake of caca on his CV for ever.
Oddly, though, for a film written by a man, the critics' insults were reserved for women, in a dazzling display of put-downs. Sukhdev Sandhu in the Telegraph sneered at the women for "all getting older" adding that Sarah Jessica Parker "looks like a cross between Wurzel Gummidge and Bride of Chucky", while Miranda "looks badly embalmed". In the Observer, Philip French ridiculed the "bitchy heroines" who enjoy "an orgy of...

In Hollywood, a magic 8-ball used to just be a vial of cocaine that allowed producers to think they're flying. But now it's also going to be a movie about an oversize billiard ball with a blue liquid-immersed 20-sided die inside it that enables indecisive people to make important life choices. For example, some exec at Paramount asked one, "should we make a movie based on the Magic 8-Ball novelty toy?" And it answered, "My reply is no." So the studio exec put the greenlight on it faster than he could snort a line.
Is the idea of a Magic 8-Ball movie surprising? To be honest, I thought this project had already been announced back when everyone was foretelling what other games and toys would follow Monopoly, Battleship, Ouija Board, Stretch Armstrong, etc., into multiplexes. Now it just seems like everyone's unveiling the appropriate 8-ball-related snark they've been working on...

Over the weekend, while you weren't wearing any pants, "news" hit the blogosphere that Logan Lerman is a primary candidate for the lead role in Sony's Spider-Man reboot. Last night, the "rumor" was "debunked" and most sites have since "updated" their "report" to reflect a claim by Sony (via Deadline) that Lerman is not cast, is not a frontrunner, is not even being considered . But HitFix, the original leak of the Lerman lead stands by the initial "story." (Also, Deadline somewhat recognizes that HitFix could still be correct.)
Whoever is right or wrong, I don't care. I just have to say that as a representative of movie blogging on his fifth year writing professionally in this medium, I'm embarrassed of all the back and forth and round and round garbage that goes with this "industry" of late. If I were merely a reader, I'd probably give up on the blogosphere...

It's a slow news day, so why not report on things as obvious as the announcement that Jason Segel will indeed star in The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time, which he co-wrote and has been developing since day one. And why not acknowledge that it's an "exclusive." Well, okay, Segel didn't have to appear in the movie, even if he's a popular star of TV and movies. Just as we couldn't be sure that Woody Allen would appear in a Muppet movie he wrote, neither could we have reasonably bet our house on Segel being the star of this one.
Meanwhile, I've got my own exclusive breaking news to report: I'm writing a post on Pajiba. I know, I've been doing them for awhile, but it wasn't confirmed that I'd be writing a post today. So, there you have it. Let the blogging on that begin. And maybe I'll...

13 years ago, little fanboy me got to meet Kevin Smith and talk to him about his plans for Superman. I got so excited (this was before I grew tired of Smith as a filmmaker). But it didn't happen. Years later I again got excited about Tim Burton taking the helm of a new Superman movie (this was before I grew tired of Burton as a filmmaker). It didn't happen. And years later I got excited again about Bryan Singer's movie (this was before I grew tired of trying to accept Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane). It happened, but it sort of didn't, if you know what I mean.
I'm not going to get excited about the news (which Dustin mentioned earlier) of Christopher Nolan's "godfather" involvement with the Superman franchise, either. And not just because I'm expecting to any day now grow tired of Nolan as a filmmaker.

Is it wrong that I'm more upset about the death of Miramax Films than of J.D. Salinger? The latter was just a reclusive author (of at least one novel I hated) who hasn't written in years anyway. The former was an independent film distributor that was releasing films as recently as December. (And as someone reminded me today in response to the news, these days there's not much difference between a corporation and a person.)
Miramax was nearly as old as me, and it matured about the same time that I did, in the mid-90s. I feel like we grew up together. But like me, it hadn't done much of significance in the last few years. I fear now that I too will be put to sleep, at least until Harvey Weinstein tries to give me mouth to mouth and save me.

Here are some facts:
Every film franchise that hasn't yet had a Part 3 will eventually be rumored to be getting one. Every one of these rumored threequels will "reportedly" be "said" to be getting the 3D treatment, which is the only reason the studio wants to make said threequel. Joe Dante has made a 3D film you've never seen called The Hole, which has been named the best 3D film of 2009 by a jury at the Venice Film Festival. Joe Dante loves movie theater gimmicks, as evidenced with his William Castle homage Matinee. Joe Dante is one of the most underrated filmmakers of our generation, and he deserves more work.
Now here is something an unreliable website probably made up based on all those facts:
"I have very good information from a top source that tells me another Gremlins movie is coming to the silver screens and it will be in stereoscopic 3D!

Cop movies usually come in a set flavour. You've got your grizzled veteran a week away from retiring. Your otherwise honorable plod who has to go crooked to provide for his family. And the undercover type who gets in a little too deep. But with Brooklyn's Finest, you get them all blended together like a street-flavoured policeshake!
The trailer for Antoine Fuqua's latest is now online at Apple and does indeed feature every one of the archetypes listed above. Richard Gere's the burned-out lifetimer counting the minutes until he can start fishing, Ethan Hawke's the man trying to keep his big family happy and Don Cheadle is the cop whose loyalties are shifting from his comrades to former prison buddy/drug kingpin Wesley Snipes.

When "New Moon" hits theaters this weekend, one thing you'll notice is a lot of shirtless young men. When Taylor Lautner, Chaske Spencer or other members of the wolf pack transform, you can clearly see shreds of pants flying everywhere. And at some point, they need to regain human form, right?

For fans paying attention to the new "New Moon" TV spots that came out over the past week and a half, they would notice that the wolf Taylor Lautner's Jacob Black transforms into looks a bit different than the original wolf in the first teaser trailer.
Well, that's because it is different — about 500 times different.
"Every CGI shot goes through sometimes hundreds of iterations," director Chris Weitz explained. "Like, for instance, that first shot we put out was a work in progress. It was probably version 150 or something. That shot itself is now at version 550, I think."

Wait, there's more! Ferris Bueller's Bff, Alan Ruck — who's currently recurring on FlashForward — has been cast as her husband, Frank. Look for Frank to develop a bit of a crush on Cox's character, further inflaming the Jules-Shanna rivalry. In case you didn't hear, the Bill Lawrence-produced Cougar Town was just handed a full-season pick-up from ABC. Photo Credit: Cox: James White/ABC; Harris: Sophia Quach/PR Photos...

Chicago – There are major chunks of ABC’s very disappointing “Cougar Town” with Courteney Cox that resemble a stand-up comedian so eager to please that you can see the desperate flop sweat forming on their brow as joke after joke hit the floor with a thud. More pathetically manic than honestly funny, it’s the writing on the weakest part of the network’s entirely new Wednesday night line-up that lets down its talented star.
Television Rating: 1.5/5.0 The title of “Cougar Town” subtly refers to the local high school football team but, of course, also references its lead character, a single mother named Jules (Cox) who lives in a town apparently just down the sex-crazed spectrum from Wysteria Lane on “Desperate Housewives”. One of the few remarkable things about “Cougar Town” is the single-minded focus of the premiere - Jules needs to get laid.
