St. Vincent is tired of singers covering Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” while stripping away its original meaning. In a recent interview with BBC Radio, she called such covers “the worst thing in the world.”
Speaking to host Jo Whiley, the artist born Annie Clark praised “Hallelujah” as an “absolute masterpiece” and referenced how it took Cohen “many years to write” the song.

“[It’s] about the complication that it is to be alive — and the agony and the ecstasy and everything and all of the inherent conflict therein,” she continued, before blasting awful covers of “Hallelujah” on televised singing competitions.

Who says faith-based movies can't be fun?
Probably a lot of people, including those who refused to make it, even after scriptwriter, Jim Carroll, won more than 60 awards for his script at various film festivals in 2020 with a film called Assassin 33A.D. That doesn't mean they're right.
Even with all of the accolades, Carroll couldn't sell the film, so he decided to make some changes. I haven't seen Assassin 33 A.D., but from what I understand, Black Easter is a more pithy version that has been edited to appeal to a broader audience.
That makes some sense since this is a Christian, faith-based film. The premise is that a Muslim billionaire named Ahmed hires a group of geniuses to create a time machine so that he can go back into time and kill Jesus for perpetrating one of the biggest scams of all time.

Stars: Donny Boaz, Morgan Roberts, Isla Levine, Lamar Usher, Gerardo Davila, Jason Castro, Heidi Montag | Written and Directed by Jim Carroll
Written and directed by Jim Carroll, Assassin 33 A.D. takes the basic tenets of the faith film genre (i.e. Christian values) and shoves them into a schlocky, overly violent time travel plot. The result is deeply misguided and comfortably one of the worst films ever made.
After a prologue in which security guard Brandt (Donny Boaz) loses his faith after the death of his wife and daughters in a car crash, the plot centres on a group of science geniuses – including straight-laced team leader Ram Goldstein (Morgan Roberts) and his devoutly Christian colleague-slash-girlfriend Amy (Ilsa Devine) – who accidentally invent time travel while trying to create a matter transporter.
Their joy in their discovery is short-lived, however, because their wealthy boss Ahmed (Gerardo Davila) is secretly a Muslim terrorist...

Do you remember the first time you heard “Hallelujah?” Was it in Shrek? Maybe on a reality-singing competition show? Maybe you just heard it from a street musician somewhere and thought, “That’s a really nice song.”
It’s safe to say at this point, though, that the majority of people who’ve been touched by the song didn’t hear it from its writer, the late Leonard Cohen. Cohen’s song — like Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” vis-a-vis Johnny Cash — has become one of those rare examples of a song completely outshining its author as it’s made its way through pop culture.

The couple - who got engaged on the ABC show - just announced today that they'll be tying the knot on January 26. But here's the big news... it's going to be broadcast live on ABC.
So while we might be wearing our hat on the couch instead of in the pews, and we might be munching on popcorn instead of dining on the finest salmon, we are still looking forward to having a peek at the couple's nuptials. And while they might be doing things live, they're certainly not the first pair to invite a few cameramen along to their special day. These other celebrity duos did the same - with varying results...

It’s no secret that American Idol‘s ratings have slipped in Season 12, and tonight — despite some stellar performances by the Top 4 ladies — we witnessed several moments where you could practically feel the Nielsen numbers dropping by tenths.
There was Randy Jackson leering at Angie Miller after a particularly harsh critique and declaring, “I do like the leather shorts!” [Tonight's mathematical truth: Randy + the word "Leather" x Sexual Innuendo = Saw-level horror.] There was Nicki Minaj, trying to insert herself (her favorite pastime) into the middle of one of Mariah Carey’s critiques, and later, Ryan Seacrest breaking up one of the female judges’ tiffs with a “someone needs to be put in the corner!

We’re finally past American Idol's pre-taped auditions and selectively-edited Hollywood Week. The field this year is wide open, with no distinct Scotty McCreery-esque favorite. But at last we can see the newest crop of judges, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, handing out their critiques… live. That means we can now fairly compare them to their predecessors on the panel. Are they better? Are they worse? It's time to get all judgey on the judges — and not just on the new guys, but all the previous panelists, too.
Without further adieu, my ranking of every American Idol judge from best to worst. Of course I totally nailed it, but feel free to disagree in the comments.

Week after week and year after year, we were on pins to hear what the curmudgeonly Brit was going to say about contestants. And with good reason: he was usually spot on.

Phillip Phillips recorded his album in just three weeks. But if the 60-second previews of each song are any indication, it didn't diminished the quality at all. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Top 13 Guys: American Idol Recap
Let's start this season of American Idol right: with a multiple choice test. Don't worry, much like the Idol judges, I won't fail you, and the right answer will mean as much to you as the outcome of last night's show.
Which of the following was most annoying last night?
A: The fact that even with a new set and increased promises that this was the best season ever, nothing seemed to have changed from last year.
B. That the little constructive criticism given last night seemed to be aimed at producer favorites, feeling a little like Idol trying to use reverse psychology
C. That it was never certain exactly who had control over song choice
D. That we were supposed to laugh at the judge's antics, when in fact they were boorish and borderline offensive
E. That Heejun has been given the 'funny' edit,...

"American Idol" kicked off its Top 24 with the 12 men (plus a mystery extra guy!). It's really throwing us off having the Top 24 be in the big theater and not the tiny one with the Coca Cola dungeon up top.
We also miss seeing them walk awkwardly towards the camera with finger guns and winks and whatnot, though there was plenty of creepy weirdness as Ryan introduced them down the line. Please don't do that ever again, Heejun Han.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”

The confetti’s been swept up. The summer tour dates have been announced. And Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” is headed for a date with country radio. All of which is another way of saying that American Idol‘s 11th season is a mere seven months away.
With that in mind, I sat down and hammered out a list of 10 changes I’d make to the Idol machine to keep it humming along in high-rated, entertaining fashion. Check out my list of proposed tweaks, then hit the comments and suggest your own!

Scotty McCreery is the new American Idol! The teenaged country singer beat Lauren Alaina to win the the title which capped off a spectacular show. The two hour Season 10 finale took place at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and they really packed in as much as they could. Beyonce dazzled on stage, Jennifer Lopez sparkled in a very JLo-esque jumpsuit and old and new American Idol contestants turned up in hordes. Like Sanjaya Malakar — remember him? A lot of this seasons contestants got to sing with their idols like Tony Bennett, Tim McGraw, Tom Jones, Judas Priest …. and Lady Gaga! Jack Black rocking out? Classic!
But more than anything, we were just happy to see some of our contestants and winners of past American Idol’s. Adam Lambert who was so glam it hurt, Allison Iraheta, Jason Castro (with his preggers wife Mandy Mayhall), Kris Allen… the list goes on.

It’s hard to imagine what life would be like if your dad was the singer for one of the most successful punk band of all time, but that’s just a day in the life of Joey Armstrong, son of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. And somewhat fittingly, the 16-year-old drummer is now ready to follow in his father’s footsteps by forming a punk rock outfit with three of his chums.
Dubbed Emily’s Army — a name derived from two bandmates’ 15-year-old cousin Emily, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis — the group's rather sneeringly-titled debut album, Don’t Be a Dick, was produced by none other than Papa Armstrong himself and will be released through his own Adeline Records come June 14th.

Regardless of your contestant allegiance heading into the American Idol Top 3 results-show telecast, there were reasons to celebrate by the time the credits stopped rolling and the season finale of [cue imitation of Fox voiceover guy] Bohhhhhhhnzzzz [end imitation of Fox voiceover guy] began.
Fans of country music, the vitality of youth, plaid shirts, denim jackets, sparkly cowboy boots, the Make a Wish for Nigel Lythgoe Foundation, and the act of locking them doors and turning the lights down low had to be psyched to learn that the Season 10 finale will be a battle between 17-year-old Scotty McCreery and 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the youngest teen-vs.-teen finale in the history of the franchise.

Imagine watching a boxing match where a fighter gets bound tightly to the corner post, then relentlessly pummeled by his foe. Or a race where one horse is led to the starting gate, only to be pointed in the opposite direction of the remaining runners. Or a figure-skating competition where everyone performs on ice, except for one girl who gets violently hurled into a lake and told by the judges, “Hey, it’s not our fault you couldn’t get the water to freeze!” That’s kind of what Wednesday night’s edition of American Idol felt like, with Haley Reinhart...

It's that time of year when we make a completely arbitrary judgment on which "American Idol" finalists might end up in the winner's circle based on the profusion of weird junk being offered for sale under their name on eBay.
Unlike the truly bizarre homemade fan stuff we've seen in the past honoring Adam Lambert and Jason Castro, most of the top six remaining on season 10 have failed to garner the same level of crafty goodness in their followers.
As his status has slowly risen on the show, though, and he appears headed for a possible spot in the finale, rocker James Durbin has clearly laid the smackdown on the competition when it comes to eBay action.
