Skybound Entertainment, the multimedia company behind the Walking Dead and Invincible comics and TV series, is beefing up its editorial arm.
The company has hired longtime DC Comics editor Ben Abernathy to act as executive editor. The move had been expected since Abernathy left DC in January. Blake Kobashigawa, meanwhile, joins the company from comics company Idw as senior director, business development, while Alex Hargett has been tapped as Skybound’s director, brand, editorial. The company’s Arune Singh has been promoted to vp, brand, editorial.
The moves come after a banner year for Skybound’s publishing division and reflect a deeper commitment to the comic art form. Last year, the company launched what it called the Energon Universe, an umbrella for licensed G.I. Joe and Transformers comics, which have proven to hits with readers and critics. Major Spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Consider yourself warned. The latest installment of the long-running Transformers franchise is now playing in theaters, but the ending of Rise of the Beasts could shake up the series in a major way.
Related Weekend Box Office: Transformers wins the weekend with $60.5 Million
The ending of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts found Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) being offered a job with G.I. Joe, setting the stage for a major crossover between the two Hasbro properties. It’s something which has happened in comic-books, but fans were still surprised when it unfolded on the big-screen. Just how did the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover come to be? Turns out that director Steven Caple Jr. just included it in the draft, much to the surprise of the studio.
“So, in the beginning, I got the script, and I started developing Noah’s [Anthony Ramos] storyline,” Steven Caple Jr.

For G.I. Joe fans of a certain age, Conrad S. Hauser, aka Duke, is the G.I. Joe. Among the first of Hasbro’s revamped mail-away action figures, the character was created in 1983 as a descendent of the original G.I. Joe dolls. He’s also frequently been situated as the lead G.I. Joe character in cartoon shows, comic books, and finally Hollywood action movies.
Which along with the profile of an actor like Channing Tatum is what makes the opening scenes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) so shocking. After leading the first film, 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Tatum’s square-jawed 1st Sgt. Duke begins the sequel as practically a second banana to newcomer Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson). Then at exactly the 20-minute mark, Duke is unceremoniously obliterated in a fiery explosion after being betrayed by no less than the President of the United States.

Lights, camera, and a lot of regrets. Channing Tatum, Hollywood heartthrob, has revealed that he didn’t enjoy his stint as G.I. Joe. In fact, if he had his way, he would have turned down the iconic role at the start.
Surprisingly, Tatum’s misgivings about the script were the least of his concerns. In a revealing interview, the actor shared that studio execs twisted his arm into taking on the role in the popular franchise.

Tatum has been very vocal about his disdain for starring in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra back in 2009. But his recent revelations prove that he did everything in his power to walk away from the offer.
According to Variety, Tatum revealed that he tried to say no to The Rise of Cobra seven times before reluctantly accepting the part.

In 2001, the first two episodes of HBO's World War II miniseries, "Band of Brothers," aired just two days before the September 11 terrorist attacks, an event that would irrevocably alter America and its perception of its own war history, much of which it has mythologized on film. However, when creators Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks set out to adapt Stephen E. Ambrose's nonfiction book, "Band of Brothers," they wanted their follow-up to "Saving Private Ryan" to have the ring of historical authenticity.
On "Saving Private Ryan," Hanks had already found himself channeling his character, Captain Miller, when other members of the cast threatened to quit before filming even started. The experience of being forced to go "method" and attend a rigorous boot camp, led by the senior military advisor and real-life Marine veteran Dale Dye, left some of them wanting to bow out.

Dolls and dummies live so deep in the uncanny valley that horror films have been playing with them since the 1920s. In more recent decades, movies like Child’s Play and Annabelle and the brand new M3GAN have tapped into a mainstream appetite for watching your G.I. Joe get up of its own free will and stab you to death.

Somewhere along the line, Ryan Reynolds became the most playful actor we have. That might sound like faint praise; some would call him silly or lightweight or even, in his aggro irreverance, a touch smarmy. But genuine fast-break insolence is a quality that’s missing from the lumbering cheek of most of our paint-by-numbers blockbusters. He’s got a Nervous Nellie side that humanizes him, especially when it takes the form of a nerd’s verbal machine-gun fire. In his way, he’s a new screen type: the brainy goof in a pinup’s body.
Last summer, in the diabolically clever video-game head trip “Free Guy,” Reynolds finally got to be in a movie where the jittery digital-age fantasy elements skittered by every bit as quickly as his rapid-patter mind. The film was as jammed with media as Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” but more relaxed about its own insanity,...

Hasbro have been desperate for years to turn their most lucrative toy lines into blockbuster movie franchises, and the results have been less than stellar so far. Michael Bay’s Transformers series may have raked in close to $4.5 billion at the box office, but the quality seemed to get progressively worse with each subsequent sequel, not to mention takings dropping by $500 million between Age of Extinction and The Last Knight.
Competing scripts were commissioned earlier this year for a new entry, one a straightforward reboot written by Joby Harold and the other a Beast Wars adaptation to be scripted by James Vanderbilt. Are you familiar with Atlas Comics? If not, it was a comic book publisher that launched in the 1950s and it ended up evolving into Marvel Comics. However, when Marvel launched out of Altas to become its own brand, not all of the comic book properties followed. There were still a lot of comics that only Atlas was producing.
Well, the rights to all of those Atlas properties were picked up by Ghost Rider producer Steven Paul and he teamed with Paramount Pictures to adapt them into movies. Paramount doesn’t really have many lucrative franchises other than Mission: Impossible and Transformers and a few other Hasbro properties that they have yet to get off the ground.

Writer Evan Spiliotopoulos ("Beauty and the Beast") continues developing his "G.I. Joe" spin-off screenplay "Snake Eyes" for a Paramount/Hasbro standalone martial arts action feature:
Snake Eyes, originally part of Hasbro's 1982 G.I. Joe toyline, was portrayed by Ray Park in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (2009) and the "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (2013).
He is the team's original commando, with much of his history and information, including his real name, place of birth and service number, remaining "Classified". All that is known for certain is his rank/grade, originally 'Us Army Sergeant/E-5', eventually reaching 'Sergeant First Class/E-7'.
His primary military specialty is infantry, followed by hand-to-hand combat instructor. He has undergone drill sergeant training, and is a former 'Us Army Special Forces' and 'Delta Force' operator.
He was trained at the 'MacV Recondo School' and served in 'LRRPs' in Southeast Asia with both 'Stalker' and 'Storm Shadow.

With Paramount gearing up to shoot a Snake Eyes-centered G.I. Joe spinoff film later this year, the studio utilized its panel at Cinema Con 2019 to tease fans with the possibility of a third entry in its main series.
G.I. Joe 3 has been in the works at Paramount since the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but lukewarm reviews and middling box office business has slowed down any serious momentum for the project. Dwayne Johnson was set to reprise his role as Roadblock in a proposed third film titled G.I. Joe: Vigilant, but it seems like he’s no longer attached.
Instead, a new rumor from FullCircle suggests the Vigilant script has been retooled to focus on Philip “Chuckles” Provost, an undercover agent who must come out of hiding to take on Cobra’s latest threat, twins Tomax and Xamot and their time machine called the “Wheel of Time.

The creator of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us takes us through the five-year process to get his passion project made.
This guest column comes from Brian Volk-Weiss, creator and executive producer of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us.
In 2011, I was in a Borders bookstore when the initial kernel of the idea that would become The Toys That Made Us hit me like a ton of Energon Cubes; why were there so many books about the War of 1812 and zero about the origin of Transformers? Or G.I. Joe? Or He-Man? The War of 1812’s importance notwithstanding, how was it possible that hundreds of millions of people knew the names Optimus Prime and Snake Eyes, had their youths shaped by those characters, and yet not one book out of the thousands that were on display could be purchased and taken home to learn about their origins?...

When I was asked to review a film from 1975 called Supercock, I immediately thought that it sounded like a film that may have starred the late adult film performer John Holmes who was known the world over for being extraordinarily, if not freakishly, well-endowed. An Internet Google search turned up Supercock – the film I was reviewing and another one that starred John Holmes, a film I only joked about even existing! The latter didn’t surprise me in the slightest and I breathed a sigh of relief that I wasn’t being asked to review that film.
Supercock is a comedic outing concerning the sport of cockfighting with a humorous script that makes as many sexual inuendoes as you can imagine, to the point of it being a one-note joke that occasionally draws guffaws, smiles, and even a few rolling eyes. It was usually double-billed with the...

It’s not hard to see why Robert Zemeckis, a director who has often been drawn to finding the “human” side of technological flimflam, would want to turn the eccentric and touching 2010 documentary “Marwencol” into a dramatic feature. Like the documentary, Zemeckis’ “Welcome to Marwen” tells the story of Mark Hogancamp, a resident of Kingston, New York, who in 2000, outside a bar, was beaten by five louts to within an inch of his life. After spending nine days in a coma, he woke up, but his body was broken and he’d lost nearly all his memory. His friends, his failed marriage, his vast collection of ladies’ high-heeled shoes: He had no recall of any of it.
He took refuge from the trauma by designing and building a miniature World War II village, which he populated with uniformed dolls, many based on the people around him. The Belgian village of Marwencol,...

Hogancamp was attacked by a group of Nazis, leaving him with severe memory loss and some serious post-traumatic stress. As a way to cope with his fears and pain, he builds a model town called Marwen that he fills with custom-made G.I. Joe action figures. He lives out a fantasy life with...

An opening shot of shirtless Milo Gibson doing sit-ups while hanging from a ceiling bar in a Morocco hotel room raises expectations that “All the Devil’s Men” will be an unwitting exercise in “MacGruber”-ism — 1980s-style turbo machismo run amok. For better or worse, this U.K.-produced action opus doesn’t linger on that extreme end of genre caricature, though it remains hard to take fully seriously. To his credit, writer-director Matthew Hope’s third feature (following not-dissimilar “The Veteran” and zombie horror “The Vanguard”) mostly sidesteps the cheese factor in telling a tale of bullet-riddled skullduggery between mercenaries, CIA agents, and terrorists.
Yet there’s still a tang of C-grade cliché to a movie too obviously trying to pull off global intrigue on a low budget, with a surfeit of alpha-male posturing, hamfisted dialogue, and incessant gunfire ultimately failing to provide sufficient credibility (let alone production values). In case you forgot, Paramount Pictures is still planning to make a new G.I. Joe movie and the last we heard is that movie will focus on the fan favorite character Snake Eyes.
According to Variety, the studio is in talks with Robert Schwentke to direct the film. Schwentke has been hit and miss with some of his previous projects. Some of those films include Red, The Time Traveler’s Wife, R.I.P.D., Insurgent, Allegiant, and The Captain, which was a great film!
The script for Snake Eyes is being written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, who previously wrote Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
I’m on board with the idea of Snake Eyes getting his own movie. I hope that this movie will serve as a reboot to the G.I. Joe film franchise. I’m not a big fan of the previous two films, and I’ve...

Hasbro and Paramount continue developing a standalone martial arts action movie spinning off from "G.I. Joe", showcasing the faceless character 'Snake Eyes', to be directed by Robert Schwentke ("Divergent"), targeting a March 27, 2020 release:
"Snake Eyes" screenplay is by Evan Spiliotopoulos ("Beauty and the Beast") , focusing "...on the early days of the silent, masked warrior, as he attempts to join the ranks of the 'Ninja Clan' known as 'Arashikage'."
Snake Eyes, originally part of Hasbro's 1982 G.I. Joe toyline, was portrayed by Ray Park in the live-action feature "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (2009) and the sequel "G.I.

Robert Schwentke, the director of “Red” and “R.I.P.D.,” is set to direct “Snake Eyes,” based on the G.I. Joe universe, for Paramount and Allspark Pictures, individuals with knowledge of the project tell TheWrap.
The third “G.I. Joe’ film in the franchise, based on the world’s most famous toy, will be a spinoff film based upon fan favorite character Snake Eyes. Paramount’s untitled “GI Joe” Snake Eyes spinoff film will open on March 27, 2020.
“Beauty and The Beast” screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the first draft of the screenplay. The story centers on the character’s origins where he tries to become a member of the Arashikage Clan, a ninja clan based in Japan. According to “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra: The Essential Guide,” the Arashikage worked as shadowy assassins for generations, using deception to earn their keep as ninjas, as well as developing a reputation for being able to perform impossible tasks.

Doctor Who came back better than ever in 2005 and fans instantly took to Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor, even though he only lasted 13 episodes. While the show was a big success, major disagreements behind the scenes caused Eccleston to walk away from the job of a lifetime, leaving the BBC to quickly cast David Tennant in his place.
For over a decade, the actor refrained from speaking much about his problems with the producers, but recently he’s started to come clean. In a new interview with BBC Radio 2, Eccleston revealed that not only were things bad enough to make him quit but he then got into another battle with the network over how they handled his resignation.
“I made an agreement that I would say nothing about my departure, and I honored that because I was looking after the production. And then the BBC issued a statement, they...

Earlier this week, the internet was rocked by the revelation that James Gunn will be writing and maybe directing the planned Suicide Squad 2. While this was intriguing enough news in its own right, a subsequent report said that the upcoming DC flick won’t be a straightforward sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, while also raising the possibility of a total recasting.
But if you’re thinking that James Gunn could be given a completely clean slate to reinvent this series, Twitter user Daniel Rpk – who has a pretty good track record for inside scoops – claimed that this won’t be the comprehensive makeover that some fans are either fearing or fantasizing about, writing:
“I asked about it and was told “Think more like G.I. Joe: Retaliation than a full-blown reboot.” So It’ll be set in the same world, it’ll have some of the same actors but it’ll feel [fresh] and new.

Mathieu Turi's debut feature may have just released yesterday from Sony Pictures, but he's far from a newbie. In fact, the French director has been working behind the scenes of many huge franchise films for years, including G.I. Joe, Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films, to name a few. But after years of being assistant to the assistant, Turi knew he needed to make the leap into directing his own material and so took the plunge after meeting producer Xavier Gens. He pitched a few ideas and Hostile, a post-apocalyptic chamber piece of sorts, won out for its high-concept and low budget, and he was quickly off to the races. I had the chance to speak with Turi about...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Claws” Season 2, Episode 6, “Double Dutch.”]
The sweet and good-natured character Dean Simms has become of the breakouts on “Claws,” which is no mean feat for a show filled with flamboyant mafia bosses, drug dealers, ex-cons, and ex-prostitutes. But even if he has a stronger moral compass than that others, Dean is anything but boring.
Dean, portrayed by Harold Perrineau, has had perhaps the biggest character evolution on the TNT series so far. First introduced as a budding artist with autism who is completely dependent on his sister Desna (Niecy Nash), he’s become far more than a mere appendage to her life. Dean has created a much richer and more independent existence for himself that involves romancing his girlfriend Virginia (Karrueche Tran), moving in with her, and preparing to become an exotic dancer. But more importantly, he’s also become a man who can finally watch out for his sister...

Wow! Hollywood must really be hurting for ideas! Paramount Players has picked up the feature film rights to the classic toy brand Creepy Crawlers from Jakks Pacific.
There aren't any plot details regarding the film but it will be based on the classic toy molds of all sorts of creepy and slimy bugs. Creepy Crawlers was originally developed by Mattel in the early ’60s and was later revitalized by ToyMax in the ’90s, allowing children to create their own molds for "Creeple Peeple", "Mini-Dragons", "Eeeks", and more. Jakks Pacific is the current owner of the brand. I've included a few commercials from each era of the toy brand below.
I have no idea why anyone would want to make a Creepy Crawlers movie. That seems like a bottom of the barrel type brand that they're reaching for. I guess they might make something fun out of it. I'm not expecting much,...

Snake Eyes was the Vietnam War vet (due to be updated) who was horribly disfigured in a helicopter crash and would never talk again. He was taken in by the Arashikage Clan upon returning from the war and everything he learned there, combined with his military training, made him an incredibly lethal commando for G.I. Joe. Paramount isn’t done with the “G.I. Joe” franchise just yet.
While it’s not necessarily news that the studio is interested in reviving the franchise, based on the highly popular toys and cartoons from the ‘80s, The Hollywood Reporter says that Paramount isn’t interested in a team film anymore. Instead, the studio wants to focus on one ‘Joe’ in particular – Snake Eyes.
THR is reporting that Paramount is looking at Evan Spiliotopoulos to pen a “Snake Eyes” script based on the silent ninja hero.

Snake Eyes is easily one of the most of popular characters in the G.I. Joe franchise. He's just an all-around badass, and even though the first two live-action G.I. Joe films sucked, it was always a delight to watch him in action and kick ass.
Well, according to THR, Paramount Pictures is now developing a Snake Eyes solo film and they are looking to hire Evan Spiliotopoulos to write the script. Spiliotopoulos is best known for his work on Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter's War.
I actually love the idea of Snake Eyes getting his own film! I've always said that the G.I. Joe movies could work better if they put the focus on one to three characters. Just like Marvel did when they first launched their cinematic universe with Iron Man. I also felt that a G.I. Joe cinematic universe could be built in the same way.
