By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his career's second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, he'd pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school – Fast Times at Ridgemont High – for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything... (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit.
Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings.

We can finally chill. MTV is not only getting back in the music television business, it is bringing back the classic MTV Unplugged TV series. Created by Jim Burns and Robert Small, the acoustic music series premiered November 26, 1989 and ran through 1999, before being cancelled, or at least ending as a regularly scheduled series. From 2000 to 2014, MTV has put out occasional MTV Unplugged specials.

Pearl Jam were formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. One of the best selling grunge bands during its explosion in popularity, along with Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam have to date, released 10 studio albums. Choosing the best 15 from them albums is no easy task, especially with one of the strongest and most passionate community of fans whereby each one has their favourite track for a million different reasons.
While the other main grunge bands having all but faded away and with grunge declared ‘dead’ with Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, Pearl Jam carried on and branched out into other sounds, yet still managing to keep their signature sound. I've seen so much music over the years it's often difficult for me to find much that is authentic. I have to get off the beaten track and lurk around the fringes of the music scene. Find those pockets of music where the authentic bubbles and boils. Where artists are making authentic art, for themselves, for their small stake in the world; hoping to get some response back from an audience or a scene, hoping to be noticed, hoping to share their art.
I was talking to painter Ron English at lunch in Austin during SXSW and he reminded me how cities use to stake their claim in creating a music scene with an identifiable sound -- San Francisco in the '60s with the psychedelic bands like the Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, et al.; London's punk/new wave scene in the mid/late '70s with the Sex Pistols,...

The Voice UK's Live Shows are almost upon us! Ahead of Saturday night, Digital Spy spoke to Team Ricky's Emmanuel Nwamadi about his surprising musical idol and bringing soul to novelty pop hits.
On why he wants to be the next Seal
"I'm into grunge - Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Metallica and things like that. But I really love soul as well - what I'm trying to do is mix both of them together. I know it sounds like a fool's errand, but I feel like it can work. That's really what I want to do.
"I want to create my own genre. I feel like that whole rock-soul thing is gone, and the only person I could say was closest to that was Seal. There hasn't been a Seal since Seal - so I'm hoping to be that!"

Nearly a decade after Clerks II came out, director Kevin Smith will be making another sequel to his breakthrough movie Clerks. The filmmaker revealed the news in his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, attributing the film's sudden greenlighting to the poor reception his current film, Tusk, is getting in theaters.
"A year and change ago I was desperately trying to get Clerks III made for the 20th anniversary and that desperation – I must have reeked of it because I couldn't fucking find money and shit," Smith said, according to The Wrap. "But it was Tusk,...

Many will find it up for dispute, but I believe a review of legendary rock musician Ace Frehley’s newest album Space Invader fits in perfectly here. The former Kiss guitarist made a name for himself onstage as he stalked around in his interstellar costume while his instrument smoked and he fired off rockets into the sky as strobe lights flashed and flames jumped around him. His Spaceman persona grew to even more epic proportions in a sci-fi fantasy movie, video games, and through the pages of Marvel Comics and other publications. The larger-than-life cosmic super hero delivered humanity from the clutches of evil just like the Avengers, Justice League, or Fantastic Four.
You can take the makeup off his face, but you can’t remove the spirit of the Spaceman from Ace Frehley’s heart. The former Kiss lead guitarist is back and better than ever with the impeccably titled Space Invader.

Dawes will star on Sunday’s (27) episode of Guitar Center Sessions on Directv’s Audience Network, but you don’t have to wait until then to get a sneak peek at the Southern California’s folk rockers’ appearance. HitFix has an exclusive clip of the band performing “Someone Will,” the shuffling tale of unrequited love from 2013’s “Stories Don’t End.” The song starts off with Taylor Goldsmith telling a woman that someone will love her the way she deserves to be loved, and if she’d actually look right in front of her, she might see that it’s he’s in love with her. The song has a nice little twist at the end. Hosted by Nic Harcourt, Guitar Center Sessions features artists performing and talking about the inspiration behind their songs. Past artists have included Soundgarden, The 1975, Damon Albarn, The Wild Feathers, Snoop Dogg, 311, and LP. Upcoming...

The rock band Charming Liars recently released a new Ep, We Won’t Give Up. Frontman Charlie Cosser wants to offer the premiere the tracks as a series rather than as a single release. “We decided to release EPs just to give our fans constant songs that were coming out every three or four months instead of one big batch… then not hear from us for two years,” Crosser told uInterview exclusively. “We’re a brand new band, especially in this country, so we wanted constantly to be able to feed people with new music.”
Charming Liars have developed an eclectic sound based on their varying tastes in music. “We’re pretty proud of the fact that when we were touring with Alice in Chains, the main band that was on rotation in the van was the Backstreet Boys combined with Michael Bublé’s Christmas album. "Deliver Us From Evil" is the latest sweaty summer offering from Scott Derrickson, the co-writer/director of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Sinister." Eric Bana stars as Ralph Sarchie, a special ops police officer in one of the most dangerous precincts in Manhattan. Sarchie and his partner (played by Joel McHale) are used to seeing the worst that humans can do to each other, but some of the crimes on their beat have a supernatural flavor to them. Enter Father Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez), a priest who smokes and drinks and performs exorcisms. Sarchie's no believer, but when things start going bump in his house -- and threatening his wife (Olivia Munn) and child -- that's another story.
Derrickson and co-writer Paul Harris Boardman were inspired by the real Ralph Sarchie's tales of supernatural stuff he saw during his career as a NYPD, as detailed in his book "Beware the Night.

2013 was a surprisingly strong year for rock music, having gotten some new classics from seasoned bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, and Arcade Fire as well as young guitar-driven bands like Cage the Elephant, Middle Class Rut and Fidlar, just to name a few. On top of that we had serviceable albums from grunge-era acts like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Filter to round things off.
2014 is shaping up to be yet another great year for music too, as we have already gotten a handful of solid rock albums this year from Against Me, Kongos, Sleeper Agent, and Dinosaur Pile-Up, but many more are still on the horizon. Some of these albums might be ones from seasoned bands we have known and have been anticipating for years, and others are from young rock bands on the verge of a breakthrough that you...

With the 20th anniversary of the suicide of Kurt Cobain coming up next month, Seattle police knew they'd be getting plenty of questions about the Nirvana frontman. So a detective reviewed the case files - including evidence photos and statements. He found no new information to change the police conclusion that Cobain took his own life, but did discover four rolls of undeveloped film from the suicide scene. Late Thursday, Seattle police released two previously unseen images from those rolls. One showed a box containing drug paraphernalia, a spoon and what look like needles on the floor next to half a cigarette and sunglasses.

If you love Metallica, you know all about how great Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, Seek & Destroy and all of the classic tracks are. Metallica’s entire pre-radio play catalogue contains a litany of definitive songs that fans pretty much agree are great.
But there are also lots of Metallica tracks that aren’t as appreciated on such a large scale as the band’s more popular and acclaimed songs. With Metallica playing more and more varied setlists these days, digging into lesser explored corners of their back catalogue, we look at five of the best obscure Metallica tracks.

Even if you haven't Monte Pittman's name, chances are pretty good you've heard his music, as his mighty axe has swung through dozens of hit albums. He's played on nearly all of Madonna's records and tours since 2001, he co-wrote several songs on Prong's acclaimed albums Scorpio Rising and Power of the Damager, and his solo project Pain, Love & Destiny scored high on the charts, nabbing him several awards and nominations of his own. After spending many successful years in the indie rock and pop arena, Pittman has finally returned to his metal roots with the follow-up release The Power of Three – a dark and heavy project that finds him teaming up with another metal legend: Grammy-winning producer Flemming Rasmussen, best known for his contributions to Metallica's ...And Justice for All and Master of Puppets. The result is a feast of death, darkness and anguish that's unlike anything the artist has dished up before.

Speak by Marla Mase (backed by the Tomás Doncker Band is a strong album that immediately draws comparisons to the works of Hole, Veruca Salt or The Breeders albeit with a slightly heavier tone. I was reminded quite a bit of that mid-90’s ultra-aggro flannel rock. Bands like Brother Cane or early Alice in Chains without the ugly bite of some of their more well-known tracks.
“Piece of Peace” is a high-energy, aggressive track talking about the notions of human demands. “So what’s stoppin’ us?” Mase intones while discussing the needs of humanity. As a kind of anthem in these post-Occupy years, “Piece of Peace” really works. It strikes an angry chord but really is more a call to action that should speak to the budding revolutionary within all of us.

So now for just £4.99 a month you can get shows like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Hannibal and Eastbound and Down as they happen or whenever you want.
Considering that the movies package is now just £8.99 a month and the TV is £4.99 on top of this, it becomes clear that this is probably going to place them as the major contender now and Lovefilm/Amazon and Netflix need to start cranking out those exclusive series’ with major names pretty fast.

Pete Kowalsky is a very interesting character. A mainstay of the Florida Metal/Hardcore scene, he is best known as the vocalist/songwriter for Remembering Never, but is also notable for being the current vocalist for the band xBishopx, formerly known as xBishopx, which lyrically, focuses on the Straight Edge lifestyle.
He is known for being very opinionated and outspoken; he has hard line views on many issues that affect us all, whether we like it or not. He has written angry and thought provoking songs on matters such as animal cruelty, the meat trade, gay rights, faceless art critics, gay rights and much much more. If you thought Rage Against the Machine was as angry as politically motivated music gets, then you really haven’t listened to a Remembering Never record.

Pearl Jam has often been described as ‘the band that survived Grunge’. Their seminal work, 1991′s ‘Ten’, rocketed them to overnight superstardom and the forefront of the American music scene alongside fellow Seattle bands Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden.
Whether or not Pearl Jam actually belonged to the Grunge genre is still a hotly debated topic. The heavily distorted, downtuned guitars and angsty critical lyricism of their peers was almost totally absent from a lot of Pearl Jam’s recordings. They favoured delicate sounds, anthemic vocal lines and storytelling. Their sound transcended the typical Grunge noise. They seemed to be a standalone act. Something completely original, but a victim of the time’s need to label everything.

Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell has been on the vanguard for almost every important musical movement in the last three decades — alternative music, Lollapalooza, the rise of Edm, and Coachella, to name a few. Nowadays, though, it would seem the 54-year-old singer has different priorities — hanging with friends.
One of those friends would be Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell. The Chains have experienced a revival since hiring William DuVall to replace the late Lane Staley in 2007. That comeback trail has led to the also-reactivated Jane's Addiction and Alice In Chains teaming up to cross North America under the Rockstar Uproar touring festival banner.
Farrell couldn't be happier about reconnecting with Cantrell.
"I performed with Jerry at Sing Sing prison [for a benefit documented by MC5's Wayne Kramer] probably two years ago. That was the last time we hung out," says Farrell about Alice In Chains' central figure. "But other than that we had really lost touch...

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.
Yes, we get it. Times are tough and there's comfort in reflection, but enough is enough.

Mindy McCready's tragic death on Sunday makes her the fifth Celebrity Rehab patient to have died after appearing on the show. So, how did the show's leader, Dr. Drew, react to the recent news?
The celebrity doctor told Buzz Feed in part: "I am deeply saddened by this awful news. My heart goes out to Mindy's family and children. She is a lovely woman who will be missed by many. Although I have not treated her for few years, I had reached out to her recently upon hearing about the apparent suicide of her boyfriend and father of her younger children. She was devastated. Although she was fearful of stigma and ridicule she agreed with me that she needed to make her health and safety a priority."

Dear Judd,
Congratulations on "This is 40." It's good. I laughed quite a bit, at many parts. Your daughters are competent actresses. Your wife is exceptional. It seems to be moderately successful at the box office. Overall, job well done.
(Throat clear) That said, it's still way, way, way too long. Way too long. And here's the frustrating thing: You know it! Why else would you have the title be something so easily made into a joke about the length of the movie by hack film critics? It really, actually is 40 minutes too long. And yet you insist on keeping all of your movies at a robust two-plus hours, as if Gronk-spiking the viewer's patience in his face.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with a sub-120 minute comedy. "Anchorman" is 94 minutes. The heavier "School of Rock" is 104 minutes. Even your "40 Year-Old Virgin" clocked in at under two hours. The fact is, it's...

While turning 40 in Judd Apatow's latest might not be pretty, the writer/director/producer knows that of the many things that mark mid-life, music is a big one. And perhaps more than any other of his films to date, "This Is 40" is stacked with music. The official soundtrack boasts 17 songs, including new tunes from Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker, and Lindsey Buckingham. The movie itself features even more, including a handful of unlikely surprises. For example, pieces from Michael Giancchino's score for "Lost" are featured, along with "Fantine's Death (Come To Me)" from the original Broadway cast recording from "Les Miserables" (is this some kind of super sly Universal cross promotion?). Meanwhile, the '90s are represented with tunes from Stone Temple Pilots, The Pixies, Alice In Chains and Sublime, there are roof raising jams from Missy Elliott and David Guetta, while The Band, Paul Simon and Chicago.

It would have been difficult to imagine at the start of Season Three of The Voice that somehow Trevin Hunte wouldn't be the last he-diva standing, but when the time came last night for Hunte to peace out from the semi-finals, it wasn't much of a surprise. His backstory and tough road to self-confidence played well, but even with his immense pipes, he lacked a little spark. Into the final rounds go Cassadee Pope, Nicholas David and Terry McDermott, or Cass, Nick and Ter as host Carson Daly calls them.

With the re-emerging popularity of Gojira, French metal might be in for a renaissance period. Klone are a band who fuses together typical heavy metal sounds with grunge vibes that sound similar to Alice In Chains. Frontman Yann Ligner has a voice which at times sounds like Chris Cornell and this great range will undoubtedly serve them well.
There are tracks on the record which have that 90’s grunge feel to them which is obviously a positive aspect and gives the band an appeal to fans of a certain generation but also provides a platform for new fans to discover them and their unique sound. Songs like Into The Void have a real retro vibe and although in a lot of cases you would think it would make Klone sound awfully dated, it actually makes them stand out.

Eve to Adam got started around 2001 when Sassaris and his brother Alex moved from Florida to New York. “We moved from Florida in early 1999 to New York City to find a guitar player where we got connected with Gaurav Bali from New Jersey,” he said. “The core of this band has been together for almost 11 years now, since we released the first album in 2001.” The band’s sound comes from their love for the rock bands of the ’80s and ’90s. “Guns and Roses, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots…Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters…big rock, big choruses, great instrumentalists and passionate performances, that’s always what I’ve gravitated [ Read More ]

The teasers that Soundgarden have posted on Youtube within the past couple of days have got people asking a lot of questions. Mainly because there’s very little material in them to tease with. A few vocal lines, mixtures of distorted, jangling guitars and a brief instrumental later, many have been left none the wiser from the short clips. Apart from that Chris Cornell has grown his hair back, and someone killed a lot of animals for the new album cover. But have no fear, because there are a few clues lying around, if you know where to look.
First off, expect a much more poppy affair this time round. If the fairly upbeat and catchy Avengers tie-in single ‘Live to rise’ left too much to the imagination, then it only takes a glance at Cornell’s solo album ‘Scream’ to reveal what could lie in store. Whilst hopefully the...

How big a "Singles" fan are you? You may have worn out your CD of the best-selling soundtrack and made a pilgrimage to the landmark apartment house in Seattle. And you probably know all the cameos: Eric Stoltz is the mime that won't shut up, Tim Burton is the dating video director, and that's Jeremy Piven as a hyper supermarket clerk chatting up lead Campbell Scott. But for the film's 20th anniversary (it was released on Sept. 18, 1992) we've unearthed 25 things you might not know about "Singles," including that it was once set in Arizona or that it might have starred Johnny Depp(!). 1. "Singles" was in the works as early as 1984 and was originally going to be set in Phoenix, Arizona. 2. The movie took a different course after the 1990 death of Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone (whose remaining members would go on to form Pearl Jam.). As...

I’ve seen Gallows live three times (I may or may not have seen them another time – the jury shall forever still be out on that one), the first time in a tiny tent at a tiny festival in Pontypridd’s Ynysangharad Park called Full Ponty. It was my 17th Birthday, I’d not long been woken from a semi-comatose/semi-conscious powernap on the field floor by being dragged into a portaloo and having speed forced in my gums. I say forced.
The tent was rammed, the queue was huge and they were limiting who else was allowed in. Amphetamines fuelling the already confident but dazed drive of the valium and vodka, I decided I could wait no longer, I tried to break into the tent around a side, security saw me and gave chase. Somehow I managed to stumble into the front of the queue and was allowed in.

Every once in a while, a band will come on to the music scene and become a huge success in a short amount of time. One of those bands is Digital Summer, an aggressive modern rock group out of Phoenix, Arizona. The band has had a string of tours recently with the likes of Sevendust, Disturbed, Godsmack and Alice In Chains - just to name a few. Four of the band's singles, "Whatever It Takes," "Disconnect," "Just Run," and "Hostage," are being played regularly on major radio stations across the country. Along with all of this, one of the main things that I find most impressive about Digital Summer are the band member's interesting backgrounds. Vocalist Kyle Winterstein is a firefighter and paramedic. His brother, Ian Winterstein, is not only the guitarist for the group but is also a paramedic. The bassist, Anthony Hernandez, is currently getting his business degree in marketing.

Eminem is still the most popular musician on Facebook. It was a tight race, but ultimately, the Detroit rapper bested both Lady Gaga (53 million) and Rihanna (59 million) to reach 60 million Facebook fans.
Eminem has long been the most popular person on the social networking site, after taking the honor away from Michael Jackson in 2009. However, thanks to her Rihanna Navy, Rihanna is fast approaching 60 million fans herself, with approximately of 59.4 million fans.
Eminem's new milestone comes just a few months after announcing his latest solo studio album. "I'm kinda getting into my next record a little bit," the rapper told Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg in May. The album will be his first solo record since 2010's Recovery, and he confirmed that longtime friend and producer Dr. Dre will definitely "be involved".
The rapper-turned-actor even postponed filming "Southpaw" -- originally billed as "8 Mile" with boxers instead of rappers -- to focus on his new record.

Teen Wolf
“Omega” Air Date: 6/3/2012
Last year, MTV’s Teen Wolf became the hit the network had been craving. Not a reality show and not a comedy like Undressed, Teen Wolf was original drama. Well, that might be pushing it. The show was based loosely on the 1980s Michael J. Fox classic Teen Wolf, and is basically a Twilight meets MTV rehash with arguably worse acting. But it’s not all bad, and by the end of season 1, there was some stuff to root for.
The premiere opens on Jackson (Colton Haynes), emerging from the depths of a lake, t-shirt conveniently ripped around his perfectly sculpted, glistening body, with the bloody mark of “the bite” iridescent in the moonlight. He survived Derek’s bite, and it looks like we have another werewolf in town.
Or maybe two? At the hospital, Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) has fallen asleep while waiting on Lydia’s (Holland Roden) recovery.

At this point, there are only a select few people who still think of Dave Grohl as "the drummer from Nirvana" before they consider him "the frontman for Foo Fighters." Grohl has had way more years, hits and sold-out tours than his old band ever did, and his status as one of rock's best frontmen (and interviews) has elevated him to legendary status. But according to an interview with BBC Radio 1, he doesn't have any problem acknowledging his former band. Grohl told host Zane Lowe that not only is the new Foo Fighters album (set to drop at some point in 2011) being produced by Butch Vig (the guy who manned the boards for Nevermind, as well as other classics like Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and recent hits like Against Me!'s New Wave and White Crosses) but Grohl will also be collaborating with former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic.

Mark Salling is gearing up to roll out his first solo studio album "Pipe Dreams" in the United States on October 25. In anticipation for the album release, the "Glee" actor hit Tao Nightclub inside The Ventian Resort & Casino on October 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada to celebrate the record.
At the event which was also held to raise awareness for the American Red Cross, the Noah 'Puck' Puckerman depicter was accompanied by co-star Chord Overstreet who plays Sam Evans in the Fox's TV series. Wearing black outfit, the two wrapped arms around each other when posing together for photographers.
"Pipe Dreams" is led by "pop radio friendly" song titled "Higher Power". It features downbeat jam with 60s rock vibe which might not come as surprise since the actor has declared his love for throwback rock tunes when announcing the album earlier this year.
"I love nineties stuff like Alice in Chains and Nine Inch Nails.

Director: Rodrigo Cortés Writer: Chris Sparling Starring: Ryan Reynolds Today is not a good day for Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds). He has just woken up in a wooden box that is buried underground...but Paul isn't ready to die today. Paul is a contracted truck driver working in Iraq with the "post war" rebuilding effort. The last thing he remembers before waking up six feet under, is his convoy being attacked by a group of insurgents in a province where they were making deliveries. Other than that he has no idea who captured him and where he is. A planted cell phone is his only lifeline to the outside world, but it also brings it's own problems -- spotty reception, a half drained battery and his captive yelling demands from an untraceable number. Besides having the phone, Paul also has a Zippo lighter, an iffy flashlight and the contents left in his pockets.

Fontana, California - Detroit descended upon California as Eminem made a triumphant return to the West Coast at the Epicenter 2010 Festival on Saturday. Marshall Mathers performed just before fellow Motor City mavens Kiss, and what the rapper lacked in pyro he more than made up in fanfare. Still one of the biggest-selling artists in the world, Epicenter was one of only a handful of concerts Em put on in 2010. Cali happily welcomed Eminem back, roaring, dancing and rapping their approval.
Epicenter's first of two days was marked by sweltering heat in the 100s and a handful of performers whose absence from the stage was even longer than Slim Shady's self-imposed hiatus.

Alice in Chains' latest single "Lesson Learned" has got music video treatment. The clip follows a young man and woman in what seems to be an abandoned building. They bleed, suffering wounds all over their body as if symbolizing emotional learning they experienced in life.
The music video is conceived and directed by Paul Matthaeus, known for his main titles on the award-winning series "Dexter", "True Blood", and "Six Feet Under". Filmed in Seattle, it is comprised of over 6,000 still pictures stitched together to create a visually stunning stop-frame animated clip.
"Lesson Learned" itself is lifted from Alice in Chains' fourth studio album "Black Gives Way to Blue" which has come out since September 2009. The album debuted at No. 5 on Billboard Hot 200 with 126,000 copies.

The grand prize winner not only got a personalized Black Gives Way To Blue gold record, but VIP tickets to any date on the tour, a meet-and-greet with the guys in Aic and an autographed poster.
It was a pretty sweet giveaway, and not surprisingly, the entries poured in. Earlier today (September 14), we sent them all to the men in Alice In Chains, and they picked a big winner (along with three runners-up, who also get tickets to Blackdiamondskye and an autographed tour poster). And so, without further ado, here's who they chose.
