Angelo Badalamenti, the Grammy-winning composer whose synthy soundtracks for Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet ushered dream pop into the mainstream, has died. Rolling Stone confirmed the composer’s death with his manager, Kraft-Engel Management. He was 85.
“Angelo Badalamenti was a composer, loving husband, father, and grandfather,” his family tells Rolling Stone via Kraft-Engel Management. “The family confirmed he passed away on Dec. 11, 2022 at 85 years old peacefully due to natural causes and was surrounded by his loving family. If someone found a TV network willing to give them 18 hours of original programming all under their domain, it makes sense that person would want to bring a bunch of their favorite bands along with them.
Over the run of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” David Lynch has used the close of every episode as a showcase for past collaborators. Some of these acts have been household names – who could forget Nine Inch Nails rounding out the infamous Part 8 – while others have been more under-the-radar favorites.
These are artists that not only fit thematically with each individual episode, but also hew close to Lynch’s personal fandoms. The director has been open about it in the past, including his appreciation for Au Revoir Simone. Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. There's a brief, very beautiful moment in Part 7 of the new Twin Peaks, during the scene in which hotelier Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) and his secretary Beverly Paige (Ashley Judd) are investigating a strange sound emanating from the walls of the Great Northern. Ben points in the direction that he thinks the soft, soothing tone is coming from, and for a second he seems to be pointing right at the camera—past it, really…toward our world, at those of us on the other side of the fiction/fact divide. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it breach, but it lays some subtle groundwork for what follows: The aesthetically and thematically provocative Part 8 fitted the Twin Peaks mythos into our very real history of atomic destruction. And this week's...

Twin Peaks is back, blowing minds and inspiring people across the land to shout “Hello-o-ooo!” at slot machines in the process. The Showtime revival of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult mystery series comes equipped with the now-iconic jazzy, moody music from Angelo Badalmenti, but several memorable songs are also featured, usually in the form of acts headlining at the Bang Bang Bar, because they apparently have great talent bookers in the town of Twin Peaks.
Now you can take in the Twin Peaks tunes courtesy of a Spotify playlist via Indiewire. It currently features music from Chromatics, The Cactus Blossoms, and Au Revoir Simone, and will be updated as the series progresses and the mystery unfolds.
Those hoping to stay firmly in the world of David Lynch beyond the Twin Peaks revival can pay a visit to Lynch’s Festival of Disruption, which returns to the Theatre at...

The original “Twin Peaks” and the big-screen “Fire Walk With Me” provided fans with a couple of the best soundtracks out there, in no small part due to Angelo Badalmenti’s score and tracks by Julee Cruise, best known for the song “Falling.” With Showtime’s new season of “Twin Peaks,” we once again enter David Lynch and Mark Frost’s surreal world, where the soundtrack is as compelling as before.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. Or, it could be a listen to this Lynchian mixtape inspired by the massive cast list released for the new iteration of Twin Peaks, which has a surprising number of musicians along with actors.
This list includes, but is not limited to, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Sky Ferreia, and Sharon Van Etten, along with actors who also dabble in music such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Bellucci, and Richard Chamberlain. The songs are tailor-fitted to the mood of the show, a combination of the eerie, sad, dark, joyous, and full of life.

After playing it live multiple times over the summer festival season, Nervo are finally getting ready to release their new track, “Rise Early Morning.” Today, the Australian duo has premiered the song via SoundCloud for fans to check out before it hits Beatport on November 17th.
As the lead single from their upcoming album, Collateral (which drops next spring), “Rise Early Morning” features the sisters’ signature melodic sound and their beautiful vocals, which mesh rather well with the musical style of Au Revoir Simone, who help out on the progressive track. It’s a great song and as Mim and Liv have said in the past, it feels “very Nervo,” which is a statement I couldn’t agree with more.
Check out “Rise Early Morning” below and let us know if you’ll be picking up the new Nervo track when it releases on Beatport next week.

"Are you kidding me, man?!" composer Angelo Badalamenti howls jokingly when Rolling Stone asks him what he thought of Twin Peaks, the TV series he scored in the early Nineties. "It was really off the wall. I thought it was either going to sink violently down the drain or, hopefully, capture the intrigue of enthusiastic people conversing by the office water cooler on a Monday morning."

It's hardly Martin Scorsese's most lauded film, but After Hours has its dark, weird moments. The film follows the misadventures of Griffin Dunne's Paul — the actor best known for his role as a rotting corpse in An American Werewolf in London. During an evening out, he has several surreal encounters with women and oddball characters that take him to New York City nightclubs, tiny apartments, and other dark corners of the city. Electro pop band Au Revoir Simone (the name is a shout-out to Pee-wee Herman) paid homage to the movie with their new video for the single "Crazy." The tune is nothing amazing, but the all-girl short is a lot of fun, capturing several key moments from the movie with a cheeky grin. We spotted the clip on Dangerous...

Even though MTV doesn't play them anymore, music videos are still being made, mainly thanks to the interwebs because a well made video can still make rounds and get in front of as many eyes as anything in heavy rotation in the olden days. With that it mind, we've got a couple that are worth your attention. First up, NYC pop trio Au Revoir Simone has released a new video for their latest single "Crazy," and it's a pretty witty homage to Martin Scorsese's "After Hours." If you've ever wondered what his one-night-in-New-York-City surreal comedy might look like in three minutes, this does a pretty good job. Best of all it doesn't take itself too seriously and has the same sense of abandon as Scorsese's flick; we think he'd dig it. If you like the song, you can hear it on their new album Moves In Spectrums in stores now.

The electronic duo are back in orbit with a brand new soundtrack to the first science-fiction film ever made
Last year, as Nasa retired its space programme and China announced its intention to put man back on the moon, the cosmic French electronic duo Air were holed up in their Parisian studio plotting their own lunar return. Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel first landed with the 1998 hit album Moon Safari, which went platinum in the UK and for a short while seemed to define the musical zeitgeist. Space and travel have been recurring themes in their stylish, sumptuous ambient electronica, from breakthrough single "Sexy Boy", whose video depicted a monkey flying to the moon, to 2004's "Surfing on a Rocket", both great slices of future-pop.
They've also composed elegant soundtracks for Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides, although not all of their six albums have been as stellar.

Buñuel goes new romantic. Michael Corleone as the guitarist's role model … David Lynch's favourite musicians discuss the relationship between music and the movies
Nick Rhodes, Duran Duran
What moment in film is most similar in its own way to the music you make, and how?
Fellini's La Dolce Vita – specifically, the Trevi fountain scene. I relate to it because of its style and meticulous detail. It's irreverent, and at the time it was made he was doing something that nobody else had done before. This is what we always strive for. Obviously, the results are in the eye of the beholder, but that's how I'd personally love to envisage what we do.

Directors Scott Ogden and Malcolm Hearn's documentary, "Make," is about four artists on the furthest fringes of our society. Isolated by their disabilities, they find a voice and try to make sense of a world that shuns them, through incredible works of art. These are the characters that inspired Sufjan Stevens' album, "The Age of Adz." Stevens, who called the film "a beautiful and insightful look at the sublime task of making art when nothing will else do," based his album's narrative specifically on the life and apocalyptic work of the schizophrenic artist, Prophet Royal Robertson featured in "Make."
Ogden first began documenting these people 12 years ago, beginning with a trip to visit Ike Morgan, and his paintings at the Austin State Hospital. The blind sculptor Hawkins Bolden, and severely disabled crafter, Judith Scott followed. Then Hearn joined Ogden in traveling the country, documenting more of their four subjects,...

According to the National Weather Service, today is a remarkably unique day in the sense that 49 of the 50 states in the country are dealing with snow today (Florida is the only state that doesn't have a snow problem today — even Hawaii has snow in the mountain regions). It's a rare case of universal weather for the bulk of the country. Whenever there's a big snow storm (like the blizzard that wrapped up 2010), it's usually an isolated problem (most of the stories surrounding that last storm focused on New York City and the surrounding areas). But this time around, a bulk of the country is working its way through problematic weather (with some areas — like Connecticut and Massachusetts — more troublesome than others).
That's why we're looking for your snow-related stories. Did you have trouble with your commute this morning? Did school get canceled and you're watching some movies or catching up with something awesome online?...

As Pop Culture would have it, you’d think that black people only listen to Hip-Hop and R&B. Just take a look at any product geared toward African-Americans whether it’s a movie or McDonald’s commercial and the underlying thread is usually the music.
And what about when black characters are introduced in mainstream movies with an accompanying rap soundtrack that announces their “blackness” like it’s on display. Is that necessary? Does that annoy that heck out of you or has it become something that you accept as normal?
Seriously, how often do you see black films spotlighting indie rock or alternative bands?
I wish I had a long list but only a couple films come to mind: Medicine for Melancholy and I’m Through With White Girls. Not only did Barry Jenkins craft a good story, the soundtrack is pretty rad featuring songs from New York...

You just can't turn your back on the Twitter-Wood feed. I stepped away for a couple of days to leave things in MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg's capable hands, and "Eclipse" director David Slade activated a new account. He hit the ground tweeting, too, commenting about notes he just received from Stephenie Meyer about the next "Twilight" film. (Editor's note: Clearly my hands are not terribly capable.)
Meanwhile, Jon Favreau was partying down this weekend, celebrating an end to principal photography for "Iron Man 2." Both directors, as well as two celebrities attending the Inter Milan/Chelsea match at Pasadena's Rose Bowl, an extremely confident Dane Cook and music suggestions from both Rainn Wilson and David Lynch also showed up over the last 24 hours. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter-Wood report for July 20, 2009.
