The biggest stars of the summer are likely to be giant robots, bands of mutants and a web-spinning costumed hero. Beyond masked crime fighters and intergalactic warriors, there are a few up-and-coming talents poised to make a mark on the big screen. Names such as John Lloyd Young, Nicola Peltz, Manish Dayal are likely to be met with blank stares by average moviegoers, but once summer closes, their days of anonymity may be behind them. Ben Falcone and Dave Bautista have higher profiles, but they are looking to build on that success by breaking into different aspects of the movie business.

A quick review of last night's "New Girl" coming up just as soon as I arrange for somebody to clear my internet history... So far 2014 has been good to "New Girl," and "Birthday" was another winner. It gave everyone in the ensemble a moment to shine, and had room left over for some funny bits from Angela Kinsey (reprising her role as one of Jess's co-workers) and Ben Falcone (making the first of what I hope will be many appearance as hipster-hating gay bartender Mike). It deftly mixed farce with emotion in a way the show does at its strongest,...

Now this is the episode that should have been positioned as the fall finale, don’t you think, Newbies? It had everything — a touching happy ending, misunderstandings and shenanigans, a glimpse of reconciliation between Cece and Schmidt, Ben Falcone (!), genuine Nick Miller chivalry (followed by the most passionate Nick-Jess smooch we’ve seen in months), something for Winston and Coach to do that resulted in actual character development, and Tran! ”Birthday” was New Girl at its most elemental, easily ascending to best-of-season status. I might even put it as one of the top five episodes of the whole series. Agree or disagree?...

James Gandolfini's final role jerks tears and warms hearts in this first world problems romcom from Nicole Holofcener
"For Jim" reads the message at the top of the closing credits, and few people will watch this gentle, touching romcom without gleaning an added poignancy from the fact it features James Gandolfini's last leading role.
Many of the encomiums to the actor, who died of a heart attack in June, paid tribute not just to his skills as an actor but to his personal generosity and humility. These qualities are to the fore in his role as Albert, a middle-aged self-confessed slob who finds himself on the wrong end of an inverted love triangle. Just as he falls for masseuse Eva, a winning Julia Louis-Dreyfus, she is busy buffing the trapezoids of his ex-wife Marianne, played by Catherine Keener, whose main subject of conversation is the failings of her former husband.

James Gandolfini and Kristen Stewart James Gandolfini did indeed die of a heart attack, an autopsy has confirmed according to various reports. The 51-year-old actor best known for his role as Tony Soprano in the hit HBO series The Sopranos, died in Rome, Italy, two days ago, on June 19, 2013. (Photo: James Gandolfini and Kristen Stewart in Welcome to the Rileys.) Following Gandolfini’s death, an Alt Film Guide post written nearly three years ago — about Welcome to the Rileys’ box-office performance in France — received thousands of visits. People wanted to check out an image showing Gandolfini giving Kristen Stewart a "fatherly" kiss. Directed by Jake Scott, Welcome to the Rileys features Gandolfini and (estranged wife) Melissa Leo as grieving parents whose daughter has suddenly died. In New Orleans pole-dancer-cum-sex worker Kristen Stewart, they find an uneasy "replacement." Regarding her work opposite a pro like James Gandolfini in Welcome to the Rileys,...

James Gandolfini movies James Gandolfini died today of a suspected heart attack while in Rome, Italy. Although the 51-year-old actor’s fame rests on his role as mob boss Tony Soprano in the hit HBO series The Sopranos, which earned him three Emmy Awards, three SAG Awards, and one Golden Globe, Gandolfini was also featured in dozens of big-screen productions. Most notable among James Gandolfini’s movie are the following: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), in which Gandolfini plays Big Dave Brewster, a boisterous department store owner who may be having an affair with Billy Bob Thornton’s wife, Frances McDormand, and who’s being (anonymously) blackmailed by Thornton himself. Steven Zaillian’s remake of All the King’s Men (2006), starring Sean Penn as a populist Southern politician, with Gandolfini as fellow ruthless politician Tiny Duffy, demoted to Lieutenant Governor. With a new season of “Arrested Development” just around the corner, Jason Bateman has figured that now would be the best time to mount his feature-length directorial debut with “Bad Words.” He’s already proving to have an eye for talent now that he’s cast excellent character actors Allison Janney and Philip Baker Hall. The film, a 2011 Black List winner, will find Bateman leading the picture as well, playing a bitter thirtysomething who exploits a loophole to enter the children's National Quill Spelling Bee championships.. Janney and Hall will play Dr. Bernice Deagan, the outraged director of the spelling bee organization and Dr. Bowman, the head of the spelling bee group, respectively. Kathryn Hahn, Ben Falcone and Rohan Chandz have also joined the cast. Bateman looks to be shooting the film fairly quickly, with production starting in L.A. this week. We really like the talent being assembled here,...

Allison Janney, Kathryn Hahn, Ben Falcone, Philip Baker Hall and Rohan Chandz have joined the cast of Jason Bateman's darkly comedic directorial debut "Bad Words".
Bateman plays a 41-year-old high school drop out who discovers a loophole that allows him to enter The National Quill Spelling Bee.
His entry draws vehement protest and outrage of parents and the organization’s director, and he quickly advances to the nationals where he meets an awkward young boy who is unfazed by the man's brash and ill-mannered ways.
As the competition progresses, the pair begin to form an unlikely friendship. With a long list of detractors threaten to derail his change of winning, Guy must find a way to stay focused on his true mission.
Darko Entertainment, Aggregate Films and Mxn Entertainment are producing and shooting kicks off this week.

Update: Variety also reports that Catherine Keener, Toni Collette, Ben Falcone and Eve Hewson have been added to the ensemble. Collette plays therapist to Keener, as well as Louis-Dreyfus’ friend, while Hewson is daughter to Keener, who is married to Gandolfini.
Tracey Fairaway and Kathleen Rose Perkins (you may know her from that show Episodes) have jumped on to Nicole Holofcener‘s next project, currently without a title, for Fox Searchlight.
The film stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a masseuse who falls in love with the husband (James Gandolfini) of a friend. Fairaway will play Louis-Dreyfus’ college-bound daughter, while Perkins will take on the role of step mom [Variety].
Holofcener has been an original voice in the world of independent world for a long time now, never seeming to get the credit she deserves as a storyteller. This cast feels both fresh and reliable, much like the brief synopsis we’ve been provided with.

In their hit song, “Hey Jealousy,” the Gin Blossoms suggest that if “you don’t expect too much from me, you might not get let down.” I admit I approached What to Expect When Your Expecting with that attitude and was pleasantly surprised. A departure from the brainless star-studded ensemble of recent Garry Marshall (Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve), this is not exactly cinematically nutritious but a pleasant-enough cupcake.
The interlocked, primarily Atlanta-based couples the film follows include Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) owner of an upscale baby boutique with husband Gary (Ben Falcone), Gary’s father (Dennis Quaid) and his much younger wife Skyler (Brooklyn Decker), two young food truck-owners Marco (Chace Crawford) and Rosie (Anna Kendrick) the star of a Biggest Loser-type of reality show Jules (Cameron Diaz) and her partner from a Dancing with the Stars-type show Evan (Matthew Morrison), a freelance photographer Holly (Jennifer Lopez...

Battleship: Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch Brooklyn Decker has two box-office disappointments opening on the same weekend: Decker is featured in Battleship and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Both movies opened way below expectations on Friday; in fact, official studio estimates released Saturday morning have them faring even worse than Friday night estimates indicated. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Peter Berg’s Battleship raked in $9m at 3,650 locations on Friday in the Us/Canada according to Box Office Mojo. That’s about $500k less than early estimates. For comparison’s sake: Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, at the start of its third weekend out, took in an estimated $15.3m. Box-office prognosticators were expecting Battleship to gross $40m on its first weekend out in North America. It turns out the alien invasion actioner / sci-fier will be lucky if it earns much more than $25m. A Universal release, Battleship cost a reported $209m.

Chicago – “Battleship” is getting a lot of flack this week for having little to do with its alleged source. I would argue that the awful “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is even more dishonest when it comes to its inspiration. Working from an instructional book that’s designed to prepare adults for impending parenthood, the film that steals its title turns truth into cliché. There’s little that feels real or honest in this greatest hits parade of stereotypes about pregnancy and the attempt to disguise it in manipulative sentimentality makes it all the more nauseating.

Fresh off her turn as freakish media creature Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, Elizabeth Banks is freaking out again in What to Expect When You’re Expecting — albeit in a more natural, or certainly more common, way.

Oh, how I initially cringed at the thought of Reagan and Chris going out the way they were dressed when "Couple Friends" opened.
Reagan preaching about dubstep and Chris' Phil Collins analogy were priceless, though, as was their decision to stay in and watch Downton Abbey. From the first scene, we were once again treated to hilarious anecdotes about life as new parents that rang very true.
Guest stars Ben Falcone and Nat Faxon were superb in their roles as Justin and Lawrence, respectively. There certainly was room for some overacting, but such was not seen at all as they played a gay couple version of Reagan and Chris to perfection. The interactions between the two couples were interlaced with just the right amount of awkward moments and allowed Chris to give in to his compulsion to fill the silence.
He did so with some gems as usual, which I...

When you see the marketing for What to Expect When You’re Expecting, you start to see that its mostly geared towards women. Since the movie, based on the pregnancy manual of the same name, is primary focused on women, a new trailer has emerged in hopes to drawn the men into watching the movie and if you are a fan of comedy, then you will recognize some of these faces.
So get ready to watch Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon, Ben Falcone, Rob Huebel, and Dennis Quaid talk about their experiences in What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
Though this trailer was meant to appeal to the male audience, I can’t help but think that it didn’t deliver. Not because there was a lack of manly things, but they are just trying to hard to get males to watch this by appealing to male interests.

Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Brooklyn Decker, and Anna Kendrick Baby Bump Style
You might have thought cool, collectible film posters were only for science fiction and comic book movies. Think again! What to Expect When You’re Expecting is really busting a move with five fabulous looks at their female stars. A few of them are sporting baby bumps, except that Twilight actress Anna Kendrick’s seems uber-small and I don’t really detect one at all for J-Lo.
Might the Jennifer Lopez character be adopting? Her poster includes a quote from her character, which reads, “I can’t wait to meet my baby.” What to Expect When You’re Expecting comes from Lionsgate. The comedy follows five couples loosely related one to another, in the way that ensemble casts often are, who all get pregnant or expecting around the same time. It’s a bit strange when a director can gather some of today’s best actors for an ensemble romantic comedy. Valentine’s Day came out, and again with New Year’s Eve. Both were critical flops, but the former was a hit. The latter is opening in theaters today. Now comes yet another ensemble romantic-comedy, only thing is, this movie doesn’t revolve around a holiday. Because we all know what happens on Halloween. What to Expect When You’re Expecting takes a comedic look at everything about babies, adoption, pregnancy (the first, second, and third trimesters) and everything that happens in between.
