News of Michael Johns's death came as a shock in August. A month and a half later, his family, friends and fans gathered to celebrate his life in music.
"I wanted it to be like a rock 'n' roll celebration," the American Idol fan favorite's widow, Stacey, tells People of the memorial, held Monday at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. "I was surprised at all the people who reached out about singing."
The night was hosted by Johns's friend David Foster, the legendary producer, and included performances by Idol alums Ruben Studdard and Brooke White, as well as Katie McGhie,...

Sometimes I seriously question my obsession with American Idol. After all, there’s no other show on television that consistently causes spikes in my blood pressure — whether it’s from the blind fury I feel toward the show’s inept and inconsistent judging panel, the frustration I experience with its thoroughly uninspired theme nights and song lists, or the rolling rage of wondering things like “Where the frak is Pia Toscano’s finale duet?”
But Wednesday night’s Season 10 finale managed to dilute my cynicism, erase my grouchiness, and bring real human tears to my eyes. Call me a sentimental fool,...

Wednesday night, American Idol broke out the time-honored theme of “Songs From the Year You Were Born,” which is alternately known as “Excuses to Show Contestants’ Baby Photos” Week and also “Holy Crap, You Could Have Totally Changed That Singer’s Diaper!” Night. Song selections ranged from Nirvana to Whitney Houston (twice!), and from “I’m just gonna pretend that wasn’t the theme from Disney’s Pocahontas” to “Dude, Carrie and Allison sang it better, and as a matter of fact, so did Gina Glocksen.” And that was just the tip of the inscrutable iceberg.

It's that very special week of the year, when we collectively realize that "American Idol" contestants were born the same year we saw "Uncle Buck" at the Westbury Drive-In. It's the dreaded "Songs From the Year the Contestants Were Born" theme, or as I like to call it, "Producers Force Thia Megia to Sing a Song That Wasn't Written 100 Years Ago."
But this week "Idol" is also giving back. Portions of the proceeds from the studio recordings will go to helping the relief efforts in Japan. But really, the entire world benefits from watching Steven Tyler sing, "There's something wrong with the world today ... Oh, hi there. Let's talk natural disasters."
Before I point out that 75 percent of the season 10 contestants were born after "Mannequin" hit theaters, and 25 percent of them after "Mannequin 2: On the Move," let's rip right into the top 12's performances.

The Season 10 premiere of "American Idol" is less than a week away and to make the days go by a bit faster, Zap2it decided to take a stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
Each day leading up to the premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 19, we will post a retrospective on each season. We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!) and the black hole that was Season 3. Now it's time to take a look back at one of our favorite seasons.
Season 4 contestants in order of elimination:
Lindsey Cardinale
Mikalah Gordon
Jessica Sierra
Nikko Smith
Nadia Turner
Anwar Robinson
Constantine Maroulis

With news that producers on the British version of "X Factor" used Auto-Tune software to help sweeten the voices of a few contestants, I can't say I'm that surprised. Like "American Idol," Simon Cowell's "X Factor" aims to find the music industry's next big superstar. If the singers on "X Factor" and "Idol" are going to have to compete with contemporary pop acts — many of whom barely do an interview without a little audio sweetening in post-production — can you blame producers for a little tweaking here and there to polish their product?
In fact, I wonder if Cowell's old show might have gained a bit of shine from some tuning enhancements in the past. Here's my pick for five "American Idol" contestants who would have benefited from some minor pitch-correction.

The ninth season of "American Idol" marks the return of "Idol Gives Back," airing on Wednesday, and last week to get ready for the big night, former "American Idol" finalists from around the country volunteered at food banks to help support Feeding America. At the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Et caught up with Amy Adams (season 3), Didi Benami (season 9), Kevin Covais (season 5), Chikezie (season 7), Mikalah Gordon (season 4), David Hernandez (season 7), Kimberley Locke (season 2), Latoya London (season 3), Brandon Rogers (season 6) and Elliott Yamin (season 5). "It is important for us to be here because hunger is a real issue in America. A show like 'American Idol' can help bring so much attention to the issue. I think people tend to forget about it, especially in these times. Everybody is feeling the pressure of the economy and there are even more kids out there who don't have food," Kimberley tells Et.

As part of the ramp-up to "Idol Gives Back," past "American Idol" contestants are volunteering at food banks around the country.
One of the charities receiving the "Idol Gives Back" aid is Feeding America and in addition to donating money, the past Idols are helping with the Feeding America backpack program.
The idea is that children have food during the week when they are in school, but once the weekend comes around, they might be going hungry. These backpacks are filled with nutritious things like apple juice, tuna, milk, mashed potatoes and spaghetti and meatballs. The kids can pick up the backpacks on Fridays and return them on Mondays, then pick them up again the following Friday and so on. Also included in the backpacks are informational packets about nutritional food.

Hi guys - sorry I’m late. I was busy talking to Paula Abdul on the red carpet. Seriously. More on that later…
But for now, it’s time to live-blog the “American Idol” finale! Yay!
8:01 pm - Seacrest is introducing the judges with fun little montage that reminds us why they’re the worst judges on television. Also, Randy Jackson borrowed a bow-tie from (Mrs.) J. Alexander on “America’s Next Top Model.”
8:06 pm - What’s the worst part about being an “Idol” finalist? Having to sing songs about mountains and hurricanes or being forced to wear all white on the finale? At least Adam’s wearing space boots.
8:06 pm - Mikalah Gordon is in Conway, Arkansas. This is the first time they’ve seen a real live drag queen. It’s a night of firsts!!
8:07 pm - Carly Smithson is in San Diego.
