Brian Trenchard-Smith has, by his own estimation, directed "42 crimes against cinema"... which brings us to his latest filmmaking infraction, Drive Hard starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.
From Rlj/Image Entertainment, Drive Hard will be available via VOD this week on September 4 and in theaters and on iTunes on October 3.
The action/adventure film was written by Brian along with Chad Law, Evan Law and Brigitte Jean Allen. Here's a synopsis:
With a heist in mind, a mysterious American called Keller (Cusack) arrives in Brisbane needing a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the local underworld, he tricks a driving school instructor, Roberts (Jane) into taking the wheel.
Keller chose well, Roberts just happens to be a washed out Formula-One driver. Chased by the cops and the mob, Roberts is forced to use his racing skills to evade pursuit on a Hard Drive that takes the two along the Gold Coast of Australia.

If you’ve seen The Expendables 2, you’ve noticed that Jean-Claude Van Damme was part of that cast that included the biggest action star names in the world, such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham and the legendary Chuck Norris. In the film, Van Damme plays a character named “Jean Vilain” – the lead villain in the film – and this was the fourth time Van Damme played a villain role during his acting career. The kind of actor who can change the skin of the macho man type of roles he usually plays.

Director William Kaufman's Sinners And Saints was one of the best action films, and one of my personal favourites, of 2011. The first great news is that, as some of you already know, it will have its Domestic Premiere at the upcoming North Carolina's ActionFest , the 'manliest, muscliest film festival on the whole damn planet', with director Kaufman and stars Johnny Strong and Tom Berenger in attendance. Now, Twitch has also got the exclusive scoop that Sinners And Saints 2 will be going into production this fall, with William Kaufman and Johnny Strong returning, and Chad and Evan Law (who worked with Kaufman on The Hit List as screenwriters and One In The Chamber as associate producers) penning the screenplay. The first time Brendan Fraser and director Eric Brevig worked together, they made Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D, and it turned a $60m. budget into $240m. at the box office.
The pair are now going to be re-teaming for William Tell: 3D, Deadline report, the tale of the classic Swiss folk hero with incredible aim who shot an apple sitting atop his son’s head with a crossbow.
Now a few years into the 3D technology revival/regeneration/however you’d like to describe it, you could arguably say that there’s less of a need to question why a film’s going to be shot in 3D. But nonetheless, I can’t see a very big need for this to be in 3D. Of course, there’s going to be the arrow shot, but that’s about it.

They previously teamed for their solid if bastardised 3D adaptation of Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Now director Eric Brevig and actor Brendan Fraser are re-teaming to take on another classic tale - "William Tell" reports Deadline
Brevig ("Yogi Bear") replaces Nick Hurran on the $27 million 3D historical family action adventure, the story follows the legend of expert marksman Tell who was arrested for not bowing to the hat of Hermann Gessler, the newly appointed Austrian reeve of the Habsburg emperors.
Tell shot an apple off his son’s head to win his freedom and later assassinated Gessler. His defiance sparked a rebellion which eventually led to the formation of the Swiss Confederation.
Chad and Evan Law are presently polishing their script. Shooting kicks off mid-March at the Castel Studios in Romania and on location in Switzerland.

Exclusive: Eric Brevig has been set to direct Brendan Fraser in William Tell: 3D, the historical family action adventure that will be shot next spring in Romania. Brevig replaces Nick Hurran. Brevig previously directed Fraser in the 3D hit Journey to the Center of the Earth, and also helmed Yogi Bear. Brevig is more than capable of shooting the splitting of an apple in 3D; he graduated to director from the position of visual effects supervisor on such films as Total Recall, Pearl Harbor, Men in Black and The Day After Tomorrow. Producer Todd Moyer said that he sparked to the idea of reteaming Fraser and Brevig. “Family action adventure is exactly what Brendan and Eric do best,” he said. “Eric’s skills and experience will make this film compete with any studio film.” Because Hurran dropped out, the film is now eyeing a mid-March 2012 start in Castel Studios...

Jean Claude Van Damme is returning to action and has signed on to star in Six Bullets. The film is directed by Ernie Barbarash from a script written by Chad and Evan Law (The Hit List). Van Damme will play "an ex-mercenary kidnapping expert hired by a martial arts fighter whose daughter has gone missing."
Six Bullets is budgeted for $10 million produced by the Motion Picture Corporation of America. Van Damme just worked with Barbarash and producer Brad Krevoy on the upcoming Assassination Games, which Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions bought worldwide distribution rights. Six Bullets begins filming in western Europe and North America in August.
I enjoyed Van Damme in his classic roles and am interested in seeing him return to action. What are your thoughts?...

If you listened closely, you heard his voice in last month's release of Kung Fu Panda 2, but now it looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme will return to some live-action ass-kicking very soon. His last venture on film poked fun at himself in the form of Jcvd, but now the longtime action star is getting back into his old groove with Six Bullets. Ernie Barbarash will direct the film which follows an ex-mercenary kidnapping expert hired by a martial arts fighter whose daughter has gone missing. Obviously this sounds right up Van Damme's alley, but I can't help but wish that after Jcvd, he might try something different. Variety says Chad and Evan Law (The Hit List) wrote the script which reunites Barbarash, Van Damme and producer Brad Krevoy who apparently collaborated on a project called Assassination Games which was just picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (though we're...

He kicked his way back from the career doldrums with 2008’s self-spoofing effort Jcvd, but since then Jean-Claude Van Damme hasn’t exactly capitalised on it, pumping out yet another entry in the increasingly irrelevant Universal Soldier franchise and writing/directing/producing/editing/starring in little-seen action pic The Eagle Path, which was filmed three years ago but will only finally limp direct-to-dvd this October. He’ll no doubt be hoping for better things from Six Bullets, which he’s just agreed to star in.Ernie Barbarash, who recently worked with Van Damme on Assassination Games, is stepping behind the camera once more for the tale of a former mercenary kidnapping expert who is hired by a top martial arts champ to find his missing daughter. Shades of Taken, then, and the sort of plot that makes us wonder why the fist-jabbing fighter doesn’t strike out on his own to find his sprog.

Emmerich's Anonymous Adds Three: Roland Emmerich's next film will be titled Anonymous and he has lined up Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis and Rhys Ifans to star. Emmerich is quoted describing the films as "an historical thriller because it's about who will succeed Queen Elizabeth and the struggle of the people who want to have a hand in it. It's 'The Tudors' on one side and the Cecils on the other, and in between [the two] is the Queen. Through that story we tell how the plays written by the Earl of Oxford ended up labeled 'William Shakespeare'." Redgrave will be playing Queen Elizabeth; Thewlis as William Cecil, old and young; and Ifans as The Earl Of Oxford. Emmerich says there are still nine lead roles yet to cast. John Orloff wrote the script, but there is word on whether Mark Anderson's "Shakespeare by Another Name" (pictured right) was used as source material.

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ray Liotta are answering the call for Millennium Films' Hero Wanted.
Brian Smrz will make his directorial debut with the film, which centers on a garbage collector who stages a bank robbery so he can be the hero and stop it in order to impress a girl who works at the bank. When the plan goes awry, he seeks revenge against the double-crossers. Chad and Evan Law penned the screenplay.
Shooting is set to begin next month in Bulgaria.
Richard Salvatore, Johnny Martin and David Ornston are producing. Millennium's Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson are executive producing.
Smrz worked as a second-unit director on such tentpoles as Superman Returns and X-Men before landing the Hero gig.
"I was very impressed by Smrz's creative vision and felt he would bring real style to this project," Martin said.
The Oscar-winning Gooding's most recent credits include Norbit. He next will appear in Ridley Scott's American Gangster opposite Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. He is repped by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorneys Jake Bloom and Ralph Brescia.
