The coming weeks will tell us a lot about what to expect when it comes to the 2013 Oscar Awards as there are certainly several possibilities one could float, but in order to get to the end we must start somewhere so after this morning's announcement of the 2013 Oscar nominations, I have updated my entire batch of Oscar predictions. I am currently considering possible scenarios as to how this all could play out. The word "surprised" never really seems to fit with the Oscar nominations because, really, nothing should surprise us about the Academy when it comes to their selections. Yet, this morning did offer some seriously interesting choices that open up the race for a few, very likely scenarios. The first two scenarios have Lincoln winning, but winning in different ways, the second two offer up a couple of scenarios recent history have told us are not so far fetched.

The 2013 Academy Award nominations were announced today and it was the Best Director category providing the biggest shock. "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow, who previously won the award for 2010's "Hurt Locker," was snubbed.
"Argo" director Ben Affleck was also surprisingly left off the list, meaning frontrunner Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") will instead be facing off against David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), Michael Haneke ("Amour") and Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").
Those seven films were all also nominated for Best Picture, along with "Django Unchained" and "Les Misérables." Overall, "Lincoln" led the way with 12 nominations, followed closely by "Life of Pi" with 11 and "Les Misérables and "Silver Linings Playbook" with eight each.
The Best Actress category also provided plenty of headlines, as "Amour"'s Emmanuelle Riva, who became the oldest Best Actress nominee in history at age 85, was joined by "Beasts of the Southern Wild...

New York — It's hard to think of any song that has taken a stranger journey through popular culture than Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
Recorded in 1984, it was on the only Cohen album rejected by his record company. Virtually no one noticed when the song did come out on an independent label. Since then, through dozens of cover versions, high-profile performances and appearances on TV or movie soundtracks, "Hallelujah" has become a modern standard.
Author Alan Light reflected upon that while at Yom Kippur services in Manhattan two years ago, as he saw congregants in tears when the choir sang "Hallelujah." His curiosity led him to write "The Holy or the Broken," about the song's trajectory, about Cohen and about its most celebrated singer, the late Jeff Buckley. The book is out Tuesday.

Bad Boys. We love them. Even when we try to deny it, we know that a part of us gets starry-eyed at the leather, the attitude and the checkered pasts. It’s long been a cultural stereotype that girls love the bad boys, but in reality gay and bi men are just as susceptible to their charms. Ever since James Dean rumbled onto the big screen, people have been hooked.
Look into those eyes and try to resist...
But what is a Bad Boy, exactly? It used to be enough to simply be from "the wrong side of the tracks." But the concept has evolved over the years and today the Bad Boy is something more complicated and full of shades of gray. And sometimes a Bad Boy is really a bad boy, although that is a relatively new development when it comes to TV Bad Boys.

'Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses' opens Saturday in Seattle.

Seattle — It's fitting that on Monday morning, the inside of the "Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses" exhibit at the Experience Music Project in this Northwestern music mecca looked much like the band's music sounded: messy, splintered into 1,000 pieces, all over the place, yet somehow meticulously together and beautifully chaotic.
Museum workers inside this gleaming temple to the enduring influence of the city and region's musical heritage were in a mad scramble to get the first-of-its-kind exhibition of Nirvana artifacts into shape for Saturday's opening. Glass display cases with spots destined to feature one-of-a-kind treasures stood empty, while others were already fitted with touchstone effects. Among them were the iconic green sweater worn by late singer Kurt Cobain in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video,...

With so much ongoing discussion about whether or not video games are harmful, it is refreshing to hear designer, lecturer, and now author Jane McGonigal speak with such unbridled enthusiasm about how games are, not only already aiding us, but how they can help us improve society on a grand scale. Her argument, put too simply, seems to be this: Gamers pursue victory in a virtual world with a gusto unparalleled during most other, offline activities. If we can harness that drive and resourcefulness to tackle real world problems, we might have a chance at making the real world a better place. Sounds pretty pie-in-the-sky, huh? Best to let her make the case herself. This is McGonigal speaking from the Ted Conference in February 2010.
If that got your blood pumping and your mind racing, prepare to do a little enlightening reading. McGonigal's provocatively-titled first book, "Reality is Broken: Why...

In “Strangers,” a 1989 episode of the zeitgeist-y 1980s show thirtysomething, two minor gay characters are seen lying in bed together, post-sex. Despite the fact that the two of them never touch, the scene caused a major controversy, with the network, ABC, deciding not to rerun it after advertisers balked and the network lost more than $1.5 million in revenue.
Flash forward more than 20 years to “Everything is Broken,” the August 8th episode of True Blood. Eric and Talbot are openly having very suggestive sex when Eric says, suggestively, “Turn over,” to which Talbot enthusiastically responds, “Yes, Daddy!”
Granted, Eric ends up staking Talbot (with, um, an actual wooden stake), but two men talking about intercourse, mid-sex, on mainstream television? The scene couldn’t be much more explicit without being openly graphic.

While some of us may find ourselves letting our gaming lives slip into our everyday routines, I’ve often wondered what our gaming lives can actually teach us? This is a question that’s burned inside of me for many years now. I never understood why it was so easy for me as a child to completely memorize the entire layout of a video game, but so much more difficult to focus during class at school.
I always wanted to be on an adventure, rather than sitting in a classroom. Video gaming naturally provided me with all the thrills I would need: taking out aliens in Contra, stealing powers in Kirby, or just generally stomping face in Mario.
This trend of world saving didn’t stop in my early childhood. It continued throughout grade school, high school, and college after that. Even now, a year out of school, I find...

Actor-comedian Ben Stiller is in New York City, recovering from a broken arm as a result of a snowboarding accident. He doesn't suffer from more serious injuries, it has been confirmed, and so he is expected to make a speedy recovery from the injury.
According to various reports, Ben was admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital on Sunday, December 21 following the mishap. There he had top hand specialists treating his injury. He was released from the facility later that day.
A representative for Ben has confirmed the incident, saying in a statement, "I can confirm that he broke his hand snowboarding."
Ben Stiller, widely recognized for his role as Ted Stroehmann in "There's Something About Mary" (1998), will reprise his role as Larry Daley in "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian". A sequel to "Night at the Museum", the film will be released in U.S. theaters on May...
