The Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 28 – Oct. 8, will honor the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen with its Golden Eye award in recognition of his “successful career and versatility,” the Swiss event said Monday.
Mikkelsen will accept the award on Oct. 6, and will present his latest film, “The Promised Land,” which had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival this month. Nikolaj Arcel’s film was described by Variety critic Guy Lodge as a “lavishly upholstered historical romp,” and “a Danish Western, built on black-and-white moral binaries and a yee-haw sense of intrepid adventure.”
Lodge wrote: “Notionally rooted in historical fact, but embellished with storybook romance and flouncing cartoon villainy, this roundly enjoyable Venice competition entry finally owes all its residual gravitas (and at least half its considerable handsomeness) to the expressive woodcut visage of one Mads Mikkelsen.”

Its successes as a film distributor have included the release of “The School of Magical Animals,” “Knives Out” and the “John Wick” franchise. This autumn, Leonine will release in-house productions like “Weekend Rebels” and “Girl You Know It’s True.”

The 18th Zurich Film Festival kicks off Sept. 22 with a muscular lineup that includes some of the year’s most anticipated international pics while also putting the spotlight on Swiss and German-language cinema.
In addition to a strong selection of U.S. films, including Oscar-winning writer-director Florian Zeller’s “The Son” and Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” Zurich is also honoring Sony Pictures Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard for their contribution to cinema.
“We are very proud that this year about one-fourth of our program are world or European premieres, which – especially when it comes to American films – are quite hard to get because there’s a lot of competition,” says Zff artistic director Christian Jungen.
Other big titles unspooling in Zurich include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King,” with Viola Davis; Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan; and Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,...

Swiss productions and co-productions are on the rise, driven in part by federal and regional funders that offer attractive opportunities for domestic and international filmmakers.
Quickly recovering from the impact of the pandemic, the local film industry has gotten off to another strong year with local films and international co-productions.
Elie Grappe’s Swiss-Ukrainian-French title “Olga” premiered at this year’s Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, while unspooling in Locarno were Lorenz Merz’s “Soul of a Beast” and Swiss-international co-productions like Stefan Jäger’s “Monte Verita” and Laurent Geslin’s nature documentary “Lynx.” Venice saw such Swiss co-productions as “Ariaferma,” by Italian helmer Leonardo Di Costanzo, and Bolivian director Kiro Russo’s “El Gran Movimiento.” And opening this year’s Zurich Film Festival (Zff) was Michael Steiner’s Swiss-German Taliban thriller “And Tomorrow We Will Be Dead.”

Undeterred by the pandemic, the Zurich Film Festival kicks off this month with an impressive lineup that includes its biggest ever film, James Bond pic “No Time to Die,” which is set to screen just minutes after its Sept. 28 world premiere in London.
Zurich was one of the few major fests to have a full physical event last year during the Covid crisis. Despite concerns about new variants, organizers are confident that health safety measures will ensure a welcome return to cinemas. Zff artistic director Christian Jungen says the festival is working with embassies to safely bring in guests from other countries while relying on a verification process that includes vaccination certificates, current negative Covid test results or proof of recovery from infection.

The 17th Zurich Film Festival will host the Swiss premiere of “No Time to Die,” the 25th James Bond film, on Sept. 28. The festival will also stage a retrospective of the other Bond movies starring Daniel Craig.
“We are extremely pleased to be one of the first in the world to show our audience the most recent Bond adventure,” Christian Jungen, Zurich’s artistic director, said. “We fought for months to get this premiere and had to negotiate every last detail with the distribution company Universal. Never before has James Bond been in the official selection of a film festival. I am further pleased that the Zff has succeeded in this coup as it sends out a powerful signal that highlights the importance of cinema. The film will explore themes of xenophobia and the refugee crisis and is told through a dynamic mixture of color and black with a dramatic narrative and international all-female voice cast, including Money Heist star Itziar Ituño. Miranda July’s Sundance title “Kajillionaire,” featuring Evan Rachel Wood and Debra Winger, and Josephine Decker’s Sundance winner “Shirley,” starring Elisabeth Moss, are amongst the first 10 galas announced by the Zurich Film Festival on Friday.
The galas also include Emmanuel Courcol’s Cannes official selection “The Big Hit,” starring Kad Merad (“Baron Noir”); Michael Dweck, Gregory Kershaw’s Sundance title “The Truffle Hunters”; and Uberto Pasolini’s “Nowhere Special,” that is up for a Horizons award at Venice.
There are a pair of homegrown world premieres – “Zurcher Tagebuch,” where Zurich director Stefan Haupt takes the audience through the changes in his hometown since 1961; and Rolf Lyssy’s “Eden für jeden,” a feel-good comedy that shows the allotment garden as a mirror of multicultural Switzerland.
Further titles include Ryan White’s docu-thriller “Assassins”; Ariel Winograd’s “The Heist of the Century”; and Michel Franco’s “New Order.”

The Zurich and San Sebastian film festivals, which tend to overlap in their late-September slots and traditionally try to pool resources, are teaming once again to deliver a special market initiative that the orgs hope will contribute to rejuvenating the beleaguered international film biz.
After months of pandemic disruption and cancellations, the European festival circuit is attempting to get going again, with Venice set to be the largest event to take place physically in this era on its September 2-12 dates. That will be closely followed by Spain’s San Sebastian (September 18-26) and Switzerland’s Zurich (September 24 – October 4), which are at this moment intending to also take place physically, barring significant second waves.
The Zurich Market initiative will run in the Swiss city September 25-28 and will present approximately 20 new titles to international buyers, with international sales agents invited to attend. The selected films will all be market premieres.

The Zurich Film Festival has revealed more details of its first Zurich Market, an on-site event organized in collaboration with Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival that will see the Swiss event hosting screenings in local cinema theaters for about 20 new independent titles.
Described by the festival in a press statement as “highly anticipated titles,” the movies will be screened from Sept. 25 to 28, the festival announced.
“Due to the ongoing global pandemic, many independent films with artistic merit were unable to hold market premieres and now threaten to remain without theatrical release,” explained Christian Jungen, artistic director of the Zurich Film Festival. He added: “The fact that the initiative is meeting with great interest in both the European and American film industry is of course highly encouraging.”

The San Sebastian and Zurich film festivals have teamed to launch new film markets that will cater to the gaps created by the cancellation of SXSW and the postponement of Tribeca due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The programming of both fall festivals will feature titles originally scheduled for spring fests SXSW and Tribeca. The markets will include buyers from around the world, and will introduce new sales projects. The initiative is supported by CAA Media Finance, with the backing of Wild Bunch and Film Nation.
San Sebastian has a large Europe-Latin America co-production forum that has been running since 2012, and the festival is used by sales agents to give Toronto world premieres a European platform. Meanwhile, Zurich has a long-running and vibrant industry hub. A film market is virgin territory for both festivals.
