If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. Abigail stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Matthew Goode. One of the scariest home invasion movies of all time, Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers terrified audiences with its chilling simplicity back in 2008, introducing three masked killers who torment, torture and ultimately murder a young couple at an isolated home in the woods. A full ten years later, the characters returned in a sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night.
And six years after that movie, the masked murderers are back in director Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first movie in a brand new trilogy that will reboot the franchise.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be playing in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024, but when can we expect The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3?
We don’t yet have release dates for either of those two sequels, but producer Courtney Solomon announced at WonderCon this month that at least Chapter 2 is coming This Year.

Director Bryan Bertino crafted a classic of the home invasion genre when "The Strangers" hit theaters in 2010. Now, Lionsgate has teamed up with director Renny Harlin ("Deep Blue Sea") to revamp the franchise with not just one movie, but an entire trilogy that will not just remake the first film, but further explore these mysterious killers across three full movies. The studio is deeply committed, as all three movies are already in the can. Hence, they brought some new footage from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to this year's CinemaCon, and I was on hand to see what they had to show us. Buckle up, horror fans.
Harlin explained in an interview with /Film that he hopes to "answer some of those questions that I think all of us who enjoyed the original were left wondering" such as "Why? Who were the Strangers? Why did they do this? Is this completely really random,...

There is no The Strangers franchise without Bryan Bertino, who directed the original home invasion movie that paved the way for a sequel and now a reboot trilogy later this year.
Bertino (The Dark and the Wicked) is also making his own return to the horror genre with the upcoming Vicious, which has Dakota Fanning (The Watchers) on board to star.
Vicious has already been dated for release on August 8, 2025, and Deadline brings us another update this week. For starters, Devyn Nekoda (Scream VI) will also star.
Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things), Mary McCormack (The West Wing), Rachel Blanchard (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Klea Scott (Millennium), and Emily Mitchell (Ordinary Angels) have also joined the cast of Bryan Bertino’s Vicious, which is a Paramount production.

"Knock, knock!" "Who's there?" "Abject terror." "Abject terror who?" No, not actually the start of a joke, but the basic premise for The Strangers: Chapter 1, which here launches a fresh take on the home invasion horror concept first launched by Bryan Bertino in 2008's The Strangers. With Renny Harlin in the director's chair of what is planned as the kick-off for a trilogy, the trailer has stalked online:

Nearly 16 years after Bryan Bertino's The Strangers shocked cinemas (moments from that movie still linger in my mind rent-free), it's time to "witness how the strangers became the strangers" in the trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 ahead of its May 17th theatrical release via Lionsgate.

"Why are you doing this to us?!" "Because you're here." Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for a horror sequel titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, arriving in theaters starting this May. It's the next sequel in The Strangers horror series, but it's also the start of a brand new trilogy, sort of a re-imagining but using the same premise of creepy, masked people showing up at a home. Madelaine Petsch & Froy Gutierrez star as a couple who come into contact with the three psychopathic masked strangers while on a roadtrip through Oregon. Serving as the third film in The Strangers series created by Bryan Bertino, it's also the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone sequel films, where Chapter 1 will follow a similar premise to the the first film and takes place in the same continuity as the first two installments. This is directed by action master Renny Harlin,...

2024 has been a little barren for horror films, but fear not, my friends. Things are looking up.

What do you do when they come for you? Beloved horror franchise “The Strangers” is getting a revamp, courtesy of prequel “The Strangers: Chapter 1” starring “Riverdale” alum Madelaine Petsch. Two more sequels are due later this year, all from “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” director Renny Harlin.
In this first film, Petsch stars as a young woman who is trying to start a new life with her fiancé. Yet, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, the couple become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath co-star.
Sure, it may sound like a run-of-the-mill slasher, but “The Strangers” franchise has a haunting allure, thanks to its creation by filmmaker Bryan Bertino. The director has a “story by” credit for “Chapter 1,” which is helmed by Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

It’s been a minute since the last movie in “The Strangers” franchise; almost six years, in fact. But that didn’t stop journeyman director Renny Harlin from directing three new installments in the slasher series, all hitting theaters in 2024. Bryan Bertino‘s 2008 film updated the classic slasher narrative with a menacing home invasion twist to the delight of many horror. So how will Harlin’s films measure up again to the original and its 2018 follow-up “The Strangers: Prey At Night“?

Remember "The Strangers"? They're back — in trilogy form. Released in 2008, "The Strangers" is a wildly effective horror pic in which a couple finds themselves targeted at random by a trio of masked killers. Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the film made great use of sound design and slowly building dread to create a memorable scary movie that went on to become a sleeper hit at the box office. In 2018, we got "The Strangers: Prey At Night," a sequel that followed a similar formula but changed up the atmosphere a bit (it felt like more of a traditional slasher movie than the first film).
Now, we're getting a whole new trilogy, helmed by none other than Renny Harlin, the filmmaker behind "Cliffhanger" and "Deep Blue Sea." The plan is to release all three films in one year, and things are kicking off with "The Strangers: Chapter 1." Don't call it a remake,...

The third film in “The Strangers” franchise, which originated with Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film, stars Madelaine Petsch as a woman moving to the Pacific Northwest to start anew with her fiancé (Froy Gutierrez). Their plans go askew when they stay at an AirBnB in Oregon, where they are subject to the torment of three masked strangers that show up at their door.
Other cast members include Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Richard Brake and Ella Bruccoleri.
“Chapter One” is the first film in a new trilogy directed by Renny Harlin, who has previously helmed “Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” among other projects.
The original “Strangers” starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as the targets of masked killers who break into their home.

Paramount is polishing its crystal ball today and looking ahead at some of the films from the studio in the next few years. At least, that’s how it feels when Paramount earnings day comes along. The studio announced a 0.6% increase in stock today, with various release date announcements to whet investor’s whistles. Among the titles mentioned during today’s report, Paramount put dates on projects like Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot, a sequel to 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and more.
The Naked Gun reboot pratfalls into theaters on July 18, 2025, with Liam Neeson starring in the comedic role made famous by the late Leslie Neilsen. Akiva Schaffer directs, and executive produces the Naked Gun reboot, with Dan Gregor and Doug Man writing the script draft alongside Schaffer. One of the reasons this is exciting is that the trio partnered for the way-better-than-anticipated Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers film.

If there’s one thing horror fans love the most, it’s a solid scare that gets the adrenaline pumping. We’re forever chasing the thrills that a great scary movie can bring, which is no easy feat the more entrenched in the genre we become. That proves especially true in the current digital age, where there’s an overwhelming sea of options spread across multiple streaming services and platforms that can make finding the scariest offerings tricky. We’re here to help. As we head into the weekend, here’s a roundup of ten of horror’s most intense, bone-chilling movies.
These are some of the scariest horror movies you can and should stream this weekend.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe – AMC+, Hulu, Shudder, Tubi

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

The Bricklayer
When it comes to action that keeps you on the edge of your seat, instinct and experience count for a lot more than big budgets and CGI. Renny Harlin may not be making big studio blockbusters at present, but fellow professionals and fans alike know that he can deliver the thrills they’re looking for. When he and I met to discuss The Bricklayer, shortly after it reached cinemas in the US, the Finnish-born director was clearly pretty excited himselves. He loves making films like this, he tells me, as we go on to discuss his work with star Aaron Eckhart and his next project, a reboot of Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers.
“I think for an action filmmaker, I always had that dream of doing a spy thriller, my version of a James Bond kind of a movie,” he says, explaining what drew him to The Bricklayer.

When it comes to the horror genre, there's no larger fear than the fear of the unknown. Perversely (in defiance of good creepy storytelling) but understandably (because what better way is there to combat fear of the unknown than by education), audiences and filmmakers are drawn to continue the story of a number of ambiguous horror films through sequels, remakes, reboots, and other franchise-expanding efforts.
The original "The Strangers" is one of the most unsettling home invasion movies ever made, thanks to the large amount of realism and ambiguity surrounding the titular masked killers. Contrary to popular belief, there is an "explanation" of sorts for their actions in Bryan Bertino's 2008 film and Johannes Roberts' 2018 sequel, "The Strangers: Prey at Night" in the repeated line "Because you were home," indicating that their murder spree is nothing more than random violence unleashed due to opportunity. Yet the identities of Dollface, Pin-Up Girl,...

Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch hears knocking at the door and a voice from outside asks if Tamara’s home in the first clip from The Strangers: Chapter 1. The clip, which debuted at the New York Comic Con before making its way online, ends with someone walking behind Petsch’s character inside the house. Creepy!
Lionsgate offers this description of the first film in the new The Strangers Trilogy:
“From master director Renny Harlin comes a new trilogy of terror. In Chapter I, Madelaine Petsch stars as a young woman starting a new life with her fiancé. Suddenly, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. What begins as a fight to stay alive becomes one woman’s journey of courage and cunning in this horror series, bridging three compelling films.

The first clip from Renny Harlin's "The Strangers" remake has just dropped at New York Comic Con, and it's a sufficiently nerve-rattling introduction to the new movie. The 2 minute and 26 second clip plays through a familiar scenario for fans of Bryan Bertino's chilling 2008 home invasion flick, with a few key changes. In the role previously occupied by Liv Tyler, we see "Riverdale" star Madelaine Petsch, who's as captivating as ever as she assesses the potential threat standing outside her door.
The scene from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is a revamp of one of the most unsettling moments from the first movie, in which a woman who's alone in a cabin gets a visitor who keeps asking for someone named Tamara. We never meet Tamara in the movie, but the fact that this stranger won't stop banging on the door and asking about her again and again is creepy as hell.

Lionsgate is gearing up to unleash an entire trilogy of brand new movies set in the world of The Strangers, with The Strangers Trilogy set to be released some time next year.
This morning, Entertainment Weekly has provided us with a first taste of The Strangers Trilogy, previewing director Renny Harlin’s new movies with three first-look images.
“When this opportunity came to me, the idea of not doing a remake or a reboot but doing a trilogy based on the original film, I thought it was an incredible opportunity,” Harlin tells Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive chat. He also notes that the first film, The Strangers: Chapter 1, is similar to the original 2008 movie, while its sequels blaze a new path from there.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3, Harlin notes, “explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are of this kind of violence.

Have you been dreaming of Nicolas Cage? That's the question that Kristoffer Borgli's R-rated dark comedy "Dream Scenario" is asking. Cage plays a hapless, unassuming educator named Paul Matthews who might as well be the image next to the dictionary definition of "average, middle-aged white man." He wears sensible sweaters over collared shirts, there's a bit more salt than pepper in his beard, and his hairline hasn't been visible from the front for many, many years.
And yet, millions of strangers from all across the globe are starting to see him in their dreams. Sometimes he's a hero. Sometimes he's a bystander in the crowd. Paul's newfound stardom was exciting at first, but now he has to reckon with the reality that his presence is unwelcome and deeply traumatizing for countless people. Because sometimes, Paul is an absolute nightmare, invading people's dreams as if Freddy Krueger were a suburban dad.

We have no idea what the release strategy is going to end up being for these three movies, but it’s interesting that they’re being packaged together as “The Strangers Trilogy.” And we assume based on Lionsgate’s tease today that all three movies will be released next year.
