Actors have to learn to do all kinds of interesting things in order to play various roles, from accents to dance moves to various skills and hobbies. Jennifer Lawrence learned how to skin and gut a squirrel for her role in the 2010 Kentucky holler noir "Winter's Bone," for example, and the actors in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to learn how to hold their breath for an extended length of time. For Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" and "Dune: Part Two," star Timothée Chalamet theoretically had to learn quite a bit, because there are many aspects of life on the desert planet Arrakis that just don't have direct Earth counterparts. It's not like he can just magically understand what it's like to be surrounded by the psychic power-giving spice, for example, but he certainly has to pretend. As his character Paul Atreides, who is destined to become the Muad'dib,...

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet, is the second of the two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The second part of the epic science fiction movie follows Chalamet’s Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people to wage a war against House Harkonnen. The movie has a brilliant background score by Hans Zimmer, which is very much liked by the audience and the critics.
Upon its release earlier this month, the movie opened to a positive response from the audience and the critics. The visual effects showcased in the movie, along with the direction, storyline, background score, and performances by the cast were highly appreciated by the critics as well as the audience. In a stunning cinematic universe where sand dunes rise like mountains and the fate of galaxies hangs in the balance, Denis Villeneuve’s first voyage into the Frank Herbert’s “Dune” saga clinched six of its 10 Oscar nominations. Yet, in a twist as dramatic as Dr. Wellington killing Duke Leto, Villeneuve found himself overlooked in the best director category — a snub that left fans (and pundits) in disbelief. I dare the Academy’s Directors Branch to make such an omission once again.
As “Dune: Part Two” unfolds, we dive back into the treacherous universe alongside Paul Atreides, played by the ever-charismatic Timothée Chalamet. Seeking vengeance for his father’s death (Oscar Isaac), Paul’s journey intertwines with new allies and enemies, portrayed by a constellation of stars including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem and Christopher Walken.

It took a village of Denis Villeneuve’s most trusted artisans to pull off “Dune: Part Two’s” epic Harkonnen arena fight scene.
As epic as its predecessor, Villeneuve’s sequel raises the bar with striking visuals. None is more jaw-dropping than Feyd-Rautha’s (Austin Butler) celebration sequence. The grand fight occurs early on in the film as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Lady Margot Fenring (Lea Seydoux) join the inhabitants of Giedi Prime to watch. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision.
Fraser was no stranger to using infrared lighting.
He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

The opening of Steve McQueen’s “Widows” is a great example of how filmmaking encourages us to create stories in our heads that exist across space and time. There’s a fantastic, rhythmic seesaw between domestic moments between a set of couples and moments of the men running from a heist gone wrong; in the intertwining of the two —with sound matches that couldn’t be coming from more different sources but still audibly line up — McQueen and editor Joe Walker lead the viewer to conclusions about who these thieves are in the moments right before they are no more.
“Occupied City,” McQueen’s latest film, expands on this particularly cinematic capacity to create story via the deliberate selection and omission of imagery — which is a roundabout way of saying that it’s a film about the Nazi Occupation of Amsterdam during World War II that doesn’t use archive footage,...

Director, Producer, and Co-Writer (with Chris Weitz) Gareth Edwards has been working on his idea for an original science fiction tale involving human interaction with advanced AI child for many years. Now that The Creator is finally reaching the screen I would say it is more like science fact, or at least a plausible facsimile. With recent warnings from Silcon Valley leaders about imminent dangers with the alarming speed of AI progress, and all the talk (especially with the guild strikes) about the threat of AI technology invading and possibly even shifting out of our control in frightening ways, Edwards has cooked up a hell of a story in which AI just might be the good guys – or robots as it were – in a world where humans could be losing the upper hand.
What The Creator is really about is what it means to be human,...

"The Creator," the new sci-fi film from director Gareth Edwards, explores a near future where AI and humans are at war. As you can see from the film's trailer, a nuclear bomb has destroyed Los Angeles, which results in the U.S. going to war with its non-human opponents. However, New Asia (a conglomeration of Asian countries) has embraced AI, putting the two sides at odds with one another. When an advanced form of AI is put into the body of a child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington) ends up taking the little girl on the run from the U.S., which has come up with a massive military spaceship called Nomad that can take out targets as small as an individual being from the sky.
/Film's own Vanessa Armstrong recently spoke to Edwards about the film, including the process behind the creation of Nomad.

As I've talked about before on /Film, "The Creator" is a movie that gives us an epic, emotionally brutal sci-fi story that is markedly different (and better) than most genre films being released today. The movie sees the United States in an all-out war with the AI community, who have sought refuge in Southeast Asia.
We see this conflict unfold through the eyes of a military veteran, Joshua (John David Washington) and the AI child he comes across (Madeleine Yuna Voyles). And while the story in the film is deeply personal, it also depicts the immense and brutal power of the United States via Nomad, a massive military spaceship capable of bombing AI strongholds to oblivion.
Creating Nomad was a long process for director Gareth Edwards and his team. "There was, I mean, hundreds of designs, probably," Edwards told me in a recent interview, where he also added that he...

The first “Dune” was just an “appetizer” for what Denis Villeneuve has in store with the sequel. “Dune: Part Two,” he says, is “the main course.”
Lucky attendees at the Las Vegas CinemaCon got a first look at Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” during Tuesday’s Warner Bros. Discovery presentation, via extended first look footage. It’s already been reported that the Wbd/Legendary film, unlike the 2021 Oscar-winning first entry, won’t appear at the Venice Film Festival as Villeneuve and team polish off the movie’s visual effects, though it certainly looked polished in that first glimpse.
Villeneuve says the new film picks up just where we left Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother after the original, and the trailer deepens the relationship between himself and Chani (Zendaya) and also shows a scene of him battling to ride one of Arrakis’ massive sand worms, which Chalamet confirmed...

Dune: Part Two is coming into focus, with filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya showing off a new trailer for the Warner Bros. and Legendary sequel at CinemaCon Tuesday.
“Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic, war movie. It is much more dense. We went to all new locations,” said Villeneuve. “I didn’t want a feeling of repititon. It’s all new sets. Everyting is new.”
He also said that while 40 percent of the first film was shot in Imax, 100 percent of this film was shot in Imax.
“In the first movie, Paul is a student,” said Chalamet of his character, Paul Atreides. “We really see Paul Atrides become a leader … become a redeemer of the Fremen people in a sense.”

Among them: Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two,” Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Wes Anderson’s “Astroid City,” and Yargos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.”
These concern momentous events — historical as well as fictional. The moral struggle of “Oppenheimer’s” titular scientist (Cillian Murphy) as a result of developing the atomic bomb; “Flower Moon’s” fact-based serial murders of Osage tribal landowners in Oklahoma in the ’20s, which led to the formation of the FBI; the continuation of the destructive messianic prophecy in “Dune”; the titular military genius (Joaquin Phoenix) consumed by love and power in “Napoleon”; the complex life of...

From the opening montage of the 2023 Oscars, the Academy signaled an effort to place attention on the crafts, following last year’s widely criticized decision to present eight categories prior to the live telecast and instead including clumsily-edited excerpts from those presentations in the live broadcast.
As part of this change, a film camera was featured on the Dolby Theatre stage as part of the cinematography presentation, which was introduced with a nod to Gregg Toland’s lensing of Citizen Kane, while host Jimmy Kimmel carried a boom at one point, offering a salute to sound pros. Additionally, short clips were introduced showing the recipients of the Academy’s SciTech Awards, which were presented on Feb. 24, including Gordon E. Sawyer Award winner, lens designer Ian Neil.

1939's "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" made James Stewart a star. And it's a good thing, too, considering how committed the actor was to the role of Senator Jefferson Smith. No further example is needed than the Filibuster scene, which necessitated a doctor be on-hand after Stewart requested a physician give him mercury dichloride to induce a sore throat and make his protracted speech and the resulting exhaustion more believable.
But if realistic exhaustion was what Stewart was after, he need only have turned to the film's director. Frank Capra was arguably the biggest filmmaker in Hollywood in the late 1930s, and had established a solid reputation as something of a perfectionist. Gregory Peck would later call Capra, "a very strong, determined, hands-on director," which was, in reality, putting it mildly. According to TCM, the Oscar-winning director paid fastidious attention to recreating the US Senate chamber on Columbia's soundstages — making a trip to Washington D.

Denis Villeneuve is a director with an ambitious vision, as seen in projects such as "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049." Creating films as massive as those requires incredible attention to detail, as well as a strong production team. Luckily, Villeneuve has both. "Arrival" earned a slew of award nominations, and the Roger Deakins' cinematography in "Blade Runner 2049" won Deakins the Academy Award the following year. "Sicario" is another film with great attention to detail on both a storytelling and technical level, receiving three Academy Award nominations for cinematography, original score, and sound editing.
Sound editing in a film is a technical aspect that can sometimes be overlooked when watching a movie, so no one would blame you if you didn't notice the more minute details in the film. One such aspect that may have gone unnoticed is the screaming sounds in a scene in "Sicario." The sound effect is...

Hans Zimmer is starting to hint at his work on the score to “Dune: Part Two.”
During awards season, director Denis Villeneuve would often joke how Zimmer would continue to send him music long after fellow Oscar-winner editor Joe Walker had finished working on the film. Said Villeneuve: “[Joe] didn’t hear from Hans for a long time. He took a long time to experiment.” Then, during editing, “we started receiving tons of music for weeks. It was like a big creative rush. It became a storm. When the movie was totally finished, Hans was still sending me music.”
When the director told him the project was over, Zimmer would reply, “I know! But there will be a second part! You need music for the second part! Listen to this!”
Speaking with Variety recently about his work on “Prehistoric Planet” and “The Survivor,” Zimmer reveals of “Dune: Part 2”: “I am just getting going.

The American Cinema Editors gathered with production designers, set decorators and more as a sign of solidarity to push the Academy for inclusivity as they look ahead to the 2023 Academy Awards.
Releasing a video statement that opens with a quote from director Francis Ford Coppola, “The essence of cinema is editing,” the editors addressed the Academy’s decision to trim eight categories from the main broadcast and pre-record the winning speeches in the “Golden Hour.”
The message was direct, “We feel cheated, insulted and angry by the way our art was deemed superfluous in favor of bloated performances and spectacle.” As they pleaded with other crafts to join in the call, they asked that in the future their voice be included in the conversation, “Give us a voice in this process. Let us work together to find a solution that truly honors filmmaking and assure this never happens again.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences passed judgment on Will Smith last Friday, offering a decision and a mea culpa in an attempt to put to rest the mess that dominated the 94th Academy Awards on March 27.
But make no mistake, the AMPAS Board of Governors has a lot more work to do and a lot more messes to clean up.
The 54-member Board of Governors was originally going to deal with Smith’s fate at its previously scheduled April 18 board meeting, an annual post-Oscars gathering at which the board typically reviews the last Oscar show and decides on rule changes for the upcoming year. But with the Academy under fire for not acting quickly enough on The Slap, it moved the meeting to April 8 and discarded everything else that would have been on the agenda.
All of that, the Academy says, will be dealt with at a later date.

When it comes to the 94th Academy Awards, the exclusion of eight categories from the live ceremony will always cast a dark shadow over the proceedings. This is especially true when considering the evening's best speeches. As it happens, a good percentage of them are unavailable to us, existing only in the edited versions that ABC aired. Riz Ahmed gave a powerful speech, but it's hard not to notice that Aneil Karia's words were utterly excised from the final edit. Other highlights include Joe Walker with the night's funniest acceptance and Alberto Mielgo's loving tribute to the art of animation…...

Failure, as they say, is the key to success. And evidence of such was on display at the Oscars on Sunday. The Academy’s controversial decision to pretape eight technical award categories before the live show was certainly not the biggest takeaway from an eventful evening. But the new format was met with disapproval from audience members, fans watching at home and Oscar winners in the below-the-line fields.
The eight awards presented ahead of the live show were rattled off in little over a half-hour to an auditorium at the Dolby Theatre that was roughly half-full. And instead of hosts Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes, the early crowd got “Dune” stars Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa.
For weeks, Hollywood’s crafts and below-the-line professionals have protested the Academy’s decision to present these categories off the live show. Various guilds from across the industry sent the Academy and...

If you were confused as to why a barely seen Johnny Depp film and a Netflix zombie movie were featured during the 2022 Oscars telecast, you’re not alone.
Nearly four years after the Academy proposed and then promptly scuttled a new “Popular Film Oscar” category, Oscar producers aimed to engage with fans of more “populist” films by introducing two fan-voted “awards” that would be handed out during the telecast: the “Oscars Fan Favorite” contest and the “Oscars Cheer Moment.” It seemed to be a thinly veiled attempt to highlight high-grossing films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which was only nominated in the Best Visual Effects category.
But the attempt promptly backfired, as the billion-dollar-grossing Marvel movie was relegated to fourth place behind an obscure Johnny Depp movie (“Minamata”), an off-brand Disney-style fairy-tale musical (“Cinderella”) and Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie flick (“Army of the Dead”).

It’s an Oscar moment that makes the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco look quaint by comparison. What is an unintentional envelope mix-up next to an intentional slap heard around the world? Twelve hours later, no can stop talking about last night’s Oscars… and that surreal moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face because of a joke that was in questionable taste.
The morning after, there are countless reports among entertainment outlets and hard-nosed news organizations alike: Rock is not pressing charges; Smith may be asked to return his Oscar; there was an after-party dance of “Getting Jiggy With It!” And oh yeah, some movies won some awards. Apparently.
For all the ugliness of last night’s spectacle, it is perhaps befitting of what was the most shameful Oscars in recent memory—a capstone on an evening that seemed to be about everything except the movies...

After what feels like another eternity, the 94th Academy Awards are finally in the history books. We were finally back at the Dolby Theater with a big production that we missed so very much last year. As with any Oscar ceremony, there are things that we loved, things we couldn’t stand and the just plain bizarre. But you can always count on some great acceptance speeches, and this year brought us some genuinely beautiful moments. Some brought up the historic nature of their wins like Ariana DeBose, others became overwhelmed in the moment like Questlove, and some we didn’t get to see in their entirety, but we were still able to see bits and pieces of them. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the six best speeches of the night. Do you agree with our picks? Let us know in the comments below.

As if the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences didn’t have enough embarrassment Sunday over Will Smith’s clobbering of Chris Rock, craftsman and filmmakers provided a postmortem backstage on the pre-show that saw eight categories relegated to a taping outside the live telecast.
Some took the high road, not wanting to distract from the evening’s win for their or their master filmmaker’s work, while others promptly assessed: AMPAS needs to fix this problem and not shortchange categories again. Those slots, which were recorded during the 4-5 p.m. Pt hour and then peppered into the live show, included Sound, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Documentary Short, Animated Short and Live Action Short.

Will Smith’s onstage smack of Chris Rock was the most talked about moment of the Oscars on Sunday. The incident prompted confusion and shock from people inside the Dolby Theatre and around the world, but there was little opportunity to discuss the matter in the Academy’s onsite interview room, where winners went to take questions from press after receiving their awards.
Up first was Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Rock was a presenter for the Best Documentary category, which Thompson’s “Summer of Soul” won. Sure enough, the first question Thompson was asked concerned the Rock-Smith incident.
“I’m not talking about that. This is about the Harlem Cultural Festival. We’re very happy right now to accept this award,” Thompson said.
The interview room’s moderator offered this after Thompson continued answering the question: “I caution you to not ask you questions referring to anything else in the show...

Chicago – Usually these Oscar wrap ups are ordinary. But in a shocking event at the 94th Academy Awards, eventual Best Actor winner Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Oh and by the way, Coda wins the Best Picture in a historic honor.
The Chris Rock joke was in reference to Jada’s hairline … apparently he didn’t know that she had an Alopecia diagnosis, which includes hair loss. He asked, referring to her bare scalp, if she was to star in G.I. Jane 2 (Ed. Note: I thought she’d been a young recruit in G.I. Jane the original). Will Smith took exception to the remark, walked on stage and slapped Rock. The ABC-tv feed bleeped the remarks, but international feeds caught Rock reacting by saying, “Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me.” Smith, not done,...

“Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser and editor Joe Walker were among those who spoke out about the Academy’s decision to cut eight categories from the live telecast at Sunday’s Oscars.
Earlier this week, dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers signed a petition challenging the move to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday. As threatened, guild members wore their badges upside down as a form of silent protest.
In the press room after winning the cinematography Oscar, Fraser, whose category was shown in main part of the show, said, “Everybody in this crowd realizes why this happens, we understand the economics. I just want my particular collaborators, the production design, editing, makeup and hair people to be equally rewarded for their jobs.”
Walker, who won for editing “Dune,” said, “I feel strongly that that was a disservice to our eight categories that were not televised live.
