Our bodies sometimes still seem alive in the hours after we die, moving and even making sounds. Keep that creepy thought in mind as you watch our exclusive clip from Yam Laranas’ upcoming film “Nightshift,” which you can watch above.
The latest film from writer-director Yam Laranas (whose “Aurora” is now streaming on Netflix) closely follows a young woman working at a morgue (Yam Concepcion) who is trapped there by a harsh storm outside. Sleep-deprived and dealing with her own recent tragedy, she becomes alarmed by the sudden jerks and groans from the bodies around her. As a very long shift drags on, she begins to mentally blur the line between the living and the dead.
Though she doesn’t believe in life after death, she begins to wonder if she’s living through the end of the world — while trapped at work. In a morgue.

"Are you asking me to wait for bodies to get to shore?" The first trailer has debuted for a very interesting mystery horror titled Aurora from The Philippines. Made by Filipino director Yam Laranas, the film is about an island nation that is disrupted when a massive passenger ship named Aurora mysteriously collides and overturns. The story follows a young woman, the owner of a rundown inn, who must work to stay alive by finding missing dead bodies for a bounty - while at risk of danger from visitors who seek shelter in her home. Starring Anne Curtis (who also stars in BuyBust) with Mercedes Cabral, Andrea Del Rosario, Sue Prado, Ricardo Cepeda, Ruby Ruiz, Allan Paule, and Arnold Reyes. The imagery of the boat in this reminds me of the Costa Concordia disaster, it's just so eerie seeing a boat half flipped like that. Freaky. Here's the official trailer...

It would appear that Anne Curtis is having herself a year. Still fresh from her leading role in Erik Matti's high octane action picture Buybust, the Filipino star will next appear on the big screen in Yam Laranas' ghost story Aurora and the just-released theatrical trailer for the film looks nothing short of excellent. The passenger ship Aurora mysteriously collides into the rocky sea, and threatens an entire island and a young woman and her sister’s lives; they must survive to stay alive by finding missing dead bodies for a bounty, while at risk from visitors who seek shelter in their home. Aurora gets a Christmas release in the Philippines and will hopefully appear around the world shortly after. Check the trailer below....

“Aurora,” the upcoming horror thriller from director Yam Laranas, isn’t going to help you sleep easy: it’s the story of a perilous search for bodies after a shipwreck off a forgotten island. But the dead have their own agenda.
Laranas, who once made this excellent video for TheWrap about how to create a great horror movie, puts all his skills to work on “Aurora.” Shot in Batanes, the remote northernmost island of the Philippines, about 200 miles from Taiwan, provides the setting for a young woman (Anne Curtis) to receive a harrowing proposition.

A decade before Louise Linton became infamous for bragging about her and husband Steven Mnuchin’s vast wealth, she secured a film role because her then-husband gave about $200,000 to the production, the film’s director exclusively told TheWrap. Independent filmmaker Yam Laranas said he agreed to give Linton the part of “Katie” for the good of the production. Linton, who married Mnuchin after he became Treasury Secretary, was “not a bad actress,” Laranas said — but she wasn’t his first choice. “She wasn’t in the running at all. All I know is that one of the producers said I have a friend.

When director Yam Laranas first saw the creepy, imposing house where he would shoot his new horror film “The Wanting,” he knew the film’s score would need a dense, avante-garde vibe — the kind composer Mark Korven created for “The Witch.” But he assumed hiring Korven would be a lost cause. The film was shot in Hamilton, Ontario, and Laranas needed a Canadian composer under terms set by his Canadian investors, Lazarus Effects Inc., and the production and tax support he received from Ontario Media Development Corporation. Then Laranas’ editor, Diane Brunjes, asked him something that surprised him: “You know that Mark Korven is Canadian,...

Director Yam Laranas says that the scariest thing is the unknown, and there’s plenty of that to go around in his latest horror film, “Abomination.” The film, which was just released on iTunes, stars Tippy Dos Santos as a young woman who ends up in a psychiatric hospital after she is found on a city street with no memory of who she is. Her quest to learn her identity leads to a daring escape and a shocking belief — that she is a woman who was brutally murdered two months earlier. As you may have guessed, that leads to a few scares.

Whether you’re shooting a horror movie on a multi-million dollar budget or an iPhone, the most important thing is “always the story,” says director Yam Laranas. Just in time for Halloween, Laranas took a break from making his upcoming psychological thriller “The Wanting” to tell TheWrap about the art of scaring people silly. (You can watch the full video of his best advice above.) Because story is so vital, he starts by reading a script at least 10 times before devising a shot list for the entire movie. The “real scary stories,” Laranas says, touch on people’s “fears, nightmares and the skeletons in.

The new trailer for Abomination from director Yam Laranas feels like a machine-gun assault of creepiness. I've watched it twice now and, frankly, still don't know what it's about, but I want to watch it again. Laranas (The Echo) is like that; he and his team assemble footage that is dazzling and compelling, inviting a closer examination to figure out what, if any, meaning it might have. The trailer debuted at Fangoria, which has passed along Laranas' description of his thriller, influenced by Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome: "It's about a young woman who is found unconscious in a city street and claims to be another person who was brutally murdered two months earlier. "The Loft" is a new thriller that comes out this week, and it is a remake of a 2008 Belgian film of the same name. The original movie's director, Erik van Looy, returns to helm the redo, and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts reprises his role from the earlier film. He is joined by Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller and Eric Stonestreet in the story of a group of five married men who decide to share a loft together for extramarital affairs, only to one day find a dead woman laying in their bed. They try to parse together the details of who the girl is and how she came to meet such a grisly fate. Each man denies any wrongdoing, but it is clear to all that one of the men in their midst had to have been involved in the crime, as they were the only keyholders to the apartment,...

Movies can be different, but they can also be very similar. There’s nothing wrong with being similar, but sometimes a trend develops within film that is not a positive. Twists are such a trend, a trope of the horror genre that has been running amok in the genre for years now. That’s not to say that all twists are inherently negative. However, when the twist overtakes the film and works against what came before the twist, well, that’s a problem.
Such is the case with The Road, a film that is completely dependent on its twist when it never needs to be. When the actual twist happens most cinephiles will roll their eyes, and they are completely justified in doing so. The twist in The Road is obvious and serves no purpose other than to say,...

Ghosts can at times be very handy. At least in the sense of pushing your car across railroad tracks and out of the way of a speeding train. At least that's how they roll down on Munger Road, and you'll get to see exactly what we're talking about soon!

If you didn’t believe me when I told you The Road was a flick worth checking out, perhaps you’ll believe the public’s demand. After taking in roughly $82,000 thus far, screening in just 50 theaters, Yam Laranas’ chilling account of missing children and one damn eerie stretch of gravel is commanding a longer box office stay than initially planned.

If you haven’t seen director Yam Laranas’ supremely terrifying genre flick “The Road” in theaters, then you’re in luck: One of my Top 10 Films of 2011 is getting a one week extension. Which, of course, means that you have one seven more day to atone for not having seen the movie. However, making the journey to one of the cities you see below might be difficult, though the distributors seem to be sympathetic to your plight. To help those who don’t live anywhere near a scheduled screening, “The Road” is available on VOD, iTunes, and Amazon. Late to the party? Here’s a nifty plot-based cheat sheet: A twelve year old cold case is reopened when three teens are missing in an abandoned road. In the course of the investigation, deeper and gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered. After more than two decades, the secrets of...

The Road opened in cities across the country today as part of its limited theatrical release and is now available on a variety of on-demand services. During a recent talk with director Yam Laranas, I learned about the evolution of this film from a single story idea, scaring child actors, and his next project:
When did you first start working on The Road and what was your inspiration for the story?
Yam Laranas: I started in 2005 and was dabbling with the idea of creating a claustrophobic film that wasn’t happening in a haunted house. So I thought about how scary it is to be lost on a dark road, not knowing where to go. I remember being lost on a dark road during a road trip and you feel trapped.
What changed since your original idea from 2005?

In Filipino filmmaker Yam Laranas' latest thriller The Road (review here), we see what happens when a twelve-year-old cold case is reopened after three teens go missing on an abandoned road.
During the course of the investigation, more gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered, allowing after more than two decades the secrets of the haunted road to be finally revealed.
Today, The Road hits limited theaters here in the United States, making Laranas' spookfest the first Filipino project to ever get a theatrical release stateside which is quite an accomplishment. Recently, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Laranas about his film as well as why horror is where he belongs and where he'll be heading for his next genre endeavor.
Dread also had the chance to catch up briefly with the director at the red carpet premiere of The Road earlier this week at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood,...
