It’s official: Godzilla business is booming. Godzilla Minus One just won an Oscar, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is ruling the box office right now – and on top of that, there’s plenty more small-screen Godzilla goodness to come from the MonsterVerse in another season of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters. The Apple TV+ drama, which streamed from the end of 2023, told a timeline-hopping tale of in-universe agency Monarch, which featured several appearances from Big G himself. Evidently, the show was a hit – because not only is there more Monarch on the way, but other connected series are being developed too.
For now, details are scarce – it’s unknown if the second season of Monarch will continue the story of the Randa family across the generations, or if it’ll drum up a new human cast. And while you’d expect more appearances from Godzilla, expect much speculation over the kaiju roster too.

Is there any movie opinion more wrong-headed than saying that Godzilla isn’t my Godzilla? Sure, you might prefer the serious allegorical Godzilla from the 1954 movie or, more recently, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. Or you might like the goofier Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Gigan and the newest film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Heck, it is absolutely okay if the American Iguana monster Zilla is your jam.
The only thing that’s unacceptable, that’s absolutely dumb and worthless, is saying that a particular movie doesn’t understand Godzilla. A movie may botch everything else around the giant lizard monster, as happens often in the United States, but the lizard always works. Not only would every movie be improved by the inclusion of a giant fire-breathing monster, but the King of the Monsters fits in a wide range of movies, making him (or her!) pop culture’s most versatile star.

Fantasy can cross over into several genres where you wouldn’t expect it to be found. Horror is one, of course; I dare you to watch Pan’s Labyrinth and not tell me it’s a horrific fantasy. But another is Science Fiction. Sci-Fi and Fantasy go hand in claw, and no more so than when it comes to Godzilla and his family of monsters.
In this edition of Fantasizing About Fantasy Films, we’re doing something a little different. We’re going with the new modern classic Godzilla Minus One. The return of the King of the Monsters from his home country of Japan and an origin story never previously witnessed. Prepare to be amazed as we see a Godzilla story told in a way that will surprise you, and which became one of the biggest hits of 2023 as we fly toward the monster in Godzilla Minus One.

The MonsterVerse has brought some great projects for fans, delving into the story of iconic monsters such as Godzilla and King Kong. The franchise officially began after the successful run of the 2014 Godzilla movie, leading to a shared franchise.

Adam Wingard grew up on the Shōwa era of Godzilla movies. That would be the period of time when Toho Studios produced monster movies during the reign of Emperor Hirohito—so all the kaiju flicks released between 1954 and 1975. This included ones where Godzilla was a scary emblem of nuclear radiation, sure, but more often than not, the Big G spent these decades as a glorified superhero who hung out with pals like Mothra or Anguirus on Monster Island.

While plans to further TriStar’s Godzilla franchise on the big screen fell through, the animated sequel turned out to be a great alternative. Godzilla: The Series debuted mere months after the 1998 film was released, and it went on to become a popular part of Fox Kids’ Saturday morning programming. And although this continuation had a limited lifespan of just two seasons, it still managed to do the impossible and redeem Roland Emmerich’s widely disliked adaptation.
Similar to Ultra Q, Godzilla: The Series saw Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos leading a specialized team — Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team, or H.E.A.T. for short — in the struggle against the giant and disruptive creatures (often referred to as “mutants”) who have begun to appear all across the globe. Aiding them was the lone, surviving offspring of Godzilla teased at the end of the film. And to ensure the juvenile Godzilla stood...

It's sometimes hard to see, given humanity's arrogance and egocentricity, but the truth is that we all live on a shared world. The process of sharing a habitat was never an easy one to begin with, but it's something that's only become more complex and vital over the past couple years, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing issues surrounding climate change. To put it bluntly: human beings, so used to being isolated, are barely able to co-exist with each other, so what hope do the rest of the species on Earth have?

While he is the irrefutable "King of the Monsters", Godzilla has recently found himself in the spotlight quite a bit. Between Apple's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series (streaming now), the Oscar-winning hit Godzilla: Minus One, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, kaiju fans have had a lot of time to spend marveling in awe of Big G. With that in mind, this upcoming Legendary Pictures movie will presumably be featuring Godzilla partnering up with his previous rival, Kong. Sure, Godzilla has often found himself taking on other giant monsters on his own, or being a party to the destruction of major cities because he (or she) actually just wants to lay some eggs or topple towns because he's a real mean bastard. However, when the going gets tough, Godzilla sometimes finds himself in a spot where it's more beneficial for him to have a teammate handy to stop various three-headed dragons,...

There will be many comparisons in the next day or three between Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki’s shockingly beautiful and elegiac epic about a giant lizard triggering nationwide trauma for a country in ruins, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the newest monster smash up between the Big G and the Ape from Skull Island. But right at the top, every reader should recognize this is a fruitless exercise; a contrast as meaningful as pondering the differences between a genuine Oscar winner and a Saturday morning cartoon.

Ever since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has been referred to in a variety of ways. There's Showa-era Godzilla, Heisei-era, Millennium Godzilla, Sexy Sporty Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, MonsterVerse Godzilla, Big G, and so on. While the character has gone through a number of various comparisons to other species throughout his 70-year screen career, he's generally either referred to as a giant dinosaur or overgrown lizard.
One animal Godzilla has typically not been compared to before is a cat. However, thanks to the directors of "Godzilla Minus One" and the upcoming "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," that is no longer true. To be fair, one reason this comparison has arrived relatively late in the character's life is because special effects technology has grown exponentially over the past few decades. The resurgence of the monster's popularity on the eve of his 70th birthday later in the year, enhanced in large part by the critical and commercial success of “Godzilla Minus One” as well, has made Godzilla one of the biggest movie stars in the world at the current time. Fans are undoubtedly used to seeing him in such a light, but the current mainstream attention and accolades thrown his way has been a welcome sight to see with the Big G getting plenty of praise for the first time in his career.

Over the years, Godzilla has been largely depicted as a destroyer. A living and breathing embodiment of death and destruction. The 1960s and ‘70s, however, are a notable exception. After having previously decimated Japan on more than one occasion, the iconic kaijū returned in a different capacity. Godzilla had gone from the planet’s leading ruiner to its greatest savior. This radical change now entailed Godzilla protecting humans as opposed to threatening them upon each landfall. The transformation, weird as it is, was gradual enough that fans were able to acclimate. Or, in the case of those who began their Godzilla education with these “heroic” films rather than the very first, certain G-Fans always saw Godzilla as mankind’s supreme guardian. As if turning the walking metaphor for Wmd into a hulking humanitarian wasn’t bizarre enough, Godzilla assumed an even stranger role early into his career: he was suddenly a single parent.

Writer-director Yamazaki Takashi’s Godzilla Minus One begins on an island outpost in 1945, as kamikaze pilot Kôichi Shikishima (Kamiki Ryûnosuke) makes an impulsive choice to feign technical issues so he can avoid carrying out his suicidally nationalist duty. To him, living in shame is preferable to dying for glory, though the airman’s decision fatalistically coincides with the first appearance of a certain ravenous reptilian, who devours his way through a troop of aircraft mechanics while Kôichi cowers just out of sight.

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.

Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

"Firefly" premiered on Fox in 2002 and soared for 11 glorious episodes before crashing and burning due to network meddling and gross ineptitude. Three unaired episodes were included on the subsequent DVD release, bringing the final episode tally to 14. The series was briefly resurrected with the 2005 film "Serenity," which concluded the narrative in a satisfying enough fashion. For diehard Browncoats — the moniker super fans have given themselves — the series has an outsized hold on our hearts despite its criminally shortened lifespan. As the theme song says: "You can't take the sky from me (us)."

Fan campaigns can be a powerful thing, and one of the most successful ones came in the form of the 2005 film "Serenity," which served as a follow-up to the cancelled-too-soon Joss Whedon series, "Firefly." Long before the cries for a "Snydercut" ever hit the internet, there was a fan movement to get answers following the cancellation of "Firefly" after only one season. Unlike the fan campaign that managed to get "Star Trek" back on the air after a wobbly first season in the 1960s, the "Firefly" fan campaign earned them a different reward: a big, bold action-adventure movie directed by the series' showrunner himself, Joss Whedon.
"Firefly" was a story about scrappy survivors and outcasts, and the theme song's chorus, "you can't take the sky from me," became the mantra of the fandom, who called themselves "Browncoats" after the series' rebel faction who had lost their universe-wide war. Whedon took...

December 20 marks a dark anniversary for sci-fi fans. On that day in 2002, Fox aired its last episode of Firefly — which, due to scheduling shenanigans on the network’s part, was the pilot episode of the series. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly was a spacefaring Western about the crew of the Firefly-class vessel Serenity as they eked out a living on the fringes of an Alliance-controlled star system. “When I pitched the show, I said this is about nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things,” Whedon told reporters in 2002. Those nine people were captain Mal (Nathan Fillion), lieutenant Zoe (Gina Torres), pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), companion-for-hire Inara (Morena Baccarin), mercenary Jayne (Adam Baldwin), mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), surgeon Simon (Sean Maher), child prodigy River (Summer Glau), and religious sage Book (Ron Glass). The show, given a Friday-night death slot, was practically doomed from the start,...

John Carpenter knows a thing or two about monsters. The now legendary genre director has created many iconic creatures out of near whole cloth—or with the collaboration of Debra Hill in the case of Halloween’s Michael Myers. And even with a movie like The Thing (1982), which is both a remake and adaptation, the creature designs Carpenter and Stan Winston came up for the eponymous alien is now the stuff of eternal nightmares.
What is less known about Carpenter, however, is that he’s also a massive Godzilla fan. Going back to when he saw the American version of the original 1954 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956), during its original release, Carpenter has had a lifelong affinity for the giant kaiju movies that came out of Japan, particularly those released by Toho Studios. But as he confesses to Den of Geek, “These movies have been appreciated in silence for years.

Though writer-director Joss Whedon may not be who we thought he was, there is no question that his television shows remain widely loved and celebrated. This is especially true of the imaginative sci-fi Western "Firefly," which aired for only 11 glorious episodes in 2002. Most fans wouldn't see the remaining three episodes until the series came out on DVD in 2004. Fox bungled this one, pure and simple.
Fans mourn what might've been the way Independents look back on the Unification War, but there's no profit to be had in wishing things were different. "Firefly" gave us 14 wonderful episodes before flying off quietly into that good night. At least there was a form of closure in the 2005 film "Serenity," and the story goes on in a series of graphic novels. As the theme song says, "You can't take the sky from me."
With that in mind, this piece means to sort the wheat from the chaff.

The great Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, "The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long." Most people think Tzu was talking about the importance of conservation and avoiding burnout. He could just as easily have been referring to the beloved sci-fi television show "Firefly," which graced our screens for 14 sublime episodes, briefly returned via the 2005 film "Serenity," and was never heard from again. Some things are simply too pure for this world.
Browncoats everywhere know the best thing about "Firefly" is the characters. The crew is a group of disparate castoffs, many of them lovable losers of a kind. Yet, they are all wonderfully unique and perfectly cast, bringing the witty and often surprising dialogue to life.
There are no bad "Firefly" characters. If all was right with the Verse, this would be a nine-way tie. However, by their very definition, rankings put somebody first and someone last.

"Firefly" broke a naming pattern. Creator Joss Whedon's previous TV series were named for their protagonists: "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." "Firefly," on the other hand, is named for its setting; the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity. The ship itself is the main character since it's the glue that holds all of the cast together.
Whereas "Buffy" was a hero's journey, "Firefly" is an ensemble. The supporting characters are as important as Serenity's captain, Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion). According to Adam Baldwin, who played the crude mercenary Jayne Cobb, there not being a single main character also meant none of the cast had the extra job security a lead actor usually does.
Adam Baldwin Explains The Title
"Joss Whedon: The Biography" by Amy Pascale features a quote from Baldwin, recalling what Whedon told the cast at the outset of the series: "You're all expendable. If I choose, you can go at any time.

With only 14 episodes to its name, "Firefly" had time to realize just a fraction of its creators' ideas. Since its cancellation, the show's actors and writers have discussed many ideas for unmade episodes. Among them is Alan Tudyk, who played Hoban "Wash" Washburne, the eccentric but very skilled pilot of the starship Serenity.
Wash never got much backstory during the series' abbreviated run — his full name is never even said aloud. The bulk of his character development, including his sole focus episode "War Stories," centered on his relationship with Zoe (Gina Torres). So, Tudyk took initiative in fleshing out his character. As he's recounted multiple times, he even had an unused idea for what Wash was up to during the Unification War. While his future wife was off fighting the authoritarian Alliance, Wash had a much different experience.

“Firefly” executive producer Tim Minear recently reawakened fans’ demand for a revival (or maybe just made their cries louder than they already were) when he tweeted out a picture from the final day of shooting on Joss Whedon’s short-lived, cult-classic Fox series. And then Whedon added fuel to their fire by retweeting this.
Since Minear started this whole thing, TheWrap asked both him and Fox’s president of entertainment, Michael Thorn, what it would take to revive the Nathan Fillion-led space western at the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday.
“The macro answer is, any time we look at one of our classic titles, if there’s a way to reinvent it for today so it’s as resonant now as the original was, and is, to the fans, we’re wide open,” Thorn said. “I loved ‘Firefly,’ personally, and I watched every episode. I didn’t work on it,...

For only the third time in Emmy history three black actors are among the nominees for Best Comedy Supporting Actor: Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”), Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”). Should any of these funny men prevail they would become only the second black winner in the category after Robert Guillaume (“Soap”) prevailed in 1979.
The late Guillaume won on his first and only nomination for “Soap.” Three years later Ron Glass received his only nomination for “Barney Miller” (1982). Then Eddie Murphy made history as the first black cast member from “Saturday Night Live” nominated in 1983. Malcolm-Jamal Warner earned a single nomination for his work on “The Cosby Show” in 1986. And Meshach Taylor also scored a single nomination for his work on “Designing Women” in 1989.

2016-12-28T14:57:00-08:00Taking Its Toll: 2016 Was a Brutal Year for Celebrity Deaths
As 2016 draws to a close, plenty of TV and movie fans are glad to see it go, given how many big-name celebrities have passed away since last January. There is, however, a chorus of naysayers who point out that lots of celebrities die every year, and 2016 was no different. Is it true, then, that the last calendar year took more stars than usual away from us?
In short, yes, it's true. Yes, every year dozens of people you might have heard of pass away, but 2016 was atypical in the number of deaths of celebrities who created iconic roles or had otherwise been at the top of their fields.
The year was particularly hard on legends of the music world, and more than one of those musical stars had a big impact on the film world,...

The Odd Couple just got hit with an eviction warning.
CBS won’t be ordering more episodes of the sitcom reboot’s current Season 3, our sister site Deadline is reporting. The season will run for 13 episodes, the same length as the previous two seasons. It’s not officially cancelled, but ratings for the remaining five episodes will have to improve — by a lot — to justify a fourth season.

Last week we saw the passing of Florence Henderson, Ron Glass, and Fidel Castro. This is a collection of three different names I never thought I’d be talking about together, but this has been an odd year to say the very least. What might be more odd? They all have a comic book connection.
Florence Henderson was best known for her role as Mrs. Brady in The Brady Bunch. Though the Bradys were almost exclusively a TV family at the time, the now-defunct Dell Comics put out not one but two comic books about the continuing antics of the Brady family.
She was also the first woman to host The Tonight Show, albeit as a guest host. That has much less to do with comics, but it’s important. And if you haven’t seen The Paul Lynde Halloween Special from back in 1976, I know it’s out of...

Ron Glass leaves behind a lot more than a body of work that earned him an Emmy nomination (Barney Miller) and sci-fi acclaim (Firefly).

2016-11-27T14:53:28-08:00'Firefly' Star Ron Glass Dies at 71
Ron Glass, whose TV career hit its early pinnacle on the 70s sitcom Barney Miller, died on Friday at the age of 71. Glass was more recenly known for his role of the Shepherd Book on the cult-hit sci-fi series Firefly.
After a series of guest spots on sitcoms in the early 1970s, Glass scored the role of Ron Harris, an acerbic New York police detective, on Barney Miller, the police-precinct comedy starring Hal Linden in the title role. Glass's Harris was smart and often sarcastically witted as he spent his time coping with the sitcom's wackier characters.
After the end of his run on Barney Miller, Glass spent the 80s, 90s and 2000s working extensively on TV series, never being off camera for an extended period of time until 2014.

Such sad news: Ron Glass, Firefly’s guru, has died at the age of 71.
Such sad news for you. The brilliant Ron Glass died on November 25th 2016 at the age of 71, it was announced by his representative through Variety.
Glass was initially best known for playing Detective Ron Harris, who moonlit as the author of such true crime books as Blood On The Badge, in the classic 70s Us sitcom Barney Miller. But for those of us of the nerdy persuasion, he was Shepherd Derrial Book, the spiritual centre of Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Glass, of course, reprised the role in the 2005 movie Serenity.

It's been revealed this evening that prolific television actor Ron Glass has passed away, aged 71. A cause of death has not been divulged as of right now, but multiple outlets are reporting that the actor's rep has confirmed his death. In 1982, he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for his work in Barney Miller, but in more recent years, he's perhaps become best known for different sorts of properties. Chief among them was Joss Whedon's Firefly. There, he starred as the mysterious Shepherd Derrial Book, and he later reprised the role in Serenity. He would later reteam with Whedon for the pilot episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and returned in a later instalment when we finally learned about Agent Coulson's resurrection. Other acting credits include Friends, The Twilight Zone, and Rugrats. As always, our thoughts go out to Glass' family at what is sure to be a very hard time for them.
