Taya Radchenko as Hera in Empire V
Given the political climate this year, one does not expect to encounter Russian films at festivals, but Empire V is something a little different. A vampire-themed satire banned in its homeland, it’s a film which the government in Moscow would rather you didn’t see – and the Fantasia International Film Festival has given it a platform.
Even if it weren’t for that, the chances are that this film would attract a lot of attention. It’s based on the book by Viktor Pelevin, which has been a hit beyond Russian borders. When I met up with director Victor Ginzburg, who was born in Russia but now lives in Venice Beach in California, he told me how Pelevin urged him to take on the project and how, despite attempts at sabotage, he hopes that audiences will get the chance to appreciate the...

Rama (Pavel Tabakov) is a vampire.
In writer/director Victor Ginzburg’s adaptation of Russian novelist Viktor Pelevin’s Empire V, however, the term takes on a whole new meaning.
Mixing the action of Nightwatch with the philosophical underpinnings of The Matrix sequels, Empire V is an unconventional entry in the vampire subgenre. Working as both an introduction to a sprawling new mythology, as well as a satirical critique of (Russian) capitalism, the film has already been banned in its home country where it was due to premiere last year.
The film’s politics aren’t exclusive to Russia, though co-star Oxxxymiron (aka Miron Fedorov) and lead actor Vladimir Epifantsev have both been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the former very publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine. For the most part, however, Empire V isn’t only commenting on Russia; its political commentary is broadly critiquing how the...

The Fantasia International Film Festival is back for its 27th annual edition, running July 20 through August 9, and it’s bringing one of Hollywood’s biggest stars––in spirit now; he’s officially canceled so as to not cross the picket line of the current SAG-AFTRA strike––to Montreal with a world premiere and career recognition. Nicolas Cage, his new film Sympathy for the Devil, and his Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award aren’t the only draw for this three-week event, though.

"A vampire employs the same mental constructs as a human but his thoughts follow a different path." An official trailer is available for a Russian film called Empire V, a vampire thriller from filmmaker Victor Ginzburg. Empire V is a social parody of modern Russian society being controlled by vampires. The film was originally set to be released by Sony in Russia in 2022. After the start of the Ukrainian war and one week prior to the film's release, it was pulled from theaters by the Kremlin and banned, making it a film without a country. It stars popular Russian rapper Oxxymiron, whose anti-war stance has recently led to him to be labeled a "foreign agent". Empire V follows a 19-year-old Moscow nobody who receives an invitation to join an elite and powerful echelon of society, only to discover the bloody secrets of a vampiric dictatorship who has controlled humanity since time immemorial.

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the opening film of its 27th edition: Pascal Plante’s “Red Rooms,” about a high-profile case of a serial killer and the woman (Juliette Gariépy) obsessed with him.
“It’s a film of enormous emotional force, unbelievably controlled and smart, with a staggering performance from Gariépy. Pascal is one of the greatest talents of his generation in Quebec cinema and among the strongest filmmakers in the country right now,” says festival’s artistic director Mitch Davis.
“In a sense, it’s an unconventionally grim note to open a festival on. It’s a profoundly disturbing film. But I know the audience is going to be left completely breathless by it.”

It’s going back to the U.S.S.R. Or more like going back to the aftermath of the U.S.S.R.
“Generation P” introduces the audiences with a wild, trippy movie of Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. As Russia starts to adopt capitalism, the film explores certain themes of advertising, mafia groups and even the country’s politics.
The film revolves around a young writer, Babylen Tatarsky, who was recruiting into the advertising industry. His journey started off innocently trying to promote certain brands in Russia, but it later took Babylen deeper into a mysterious corrupt advertising industry as he looked for inspiration through Mesopotamian mythology and drugs.
The movie is based off the fiction novel written by Victor Pelevin.

New World Distribution is partnering with digital advertising firm Winnol to release Victor Ginzburg’s “Generation P” in U.S. theaters and on VOD September 12. “Generation P,” which has screened at the Toronto Film Festival and at New Directors/New Films, is based on the novel by Victor Pelevin and looks at the rise of gangsterism and advertising in post-Soviet Russia. The rookie U.S. indie distributor plans to host a special director’s-cut screening of the Russian-American co-production that includes a video toast from the Moscow-based filmmakers, along with a release on 1,500 screens. “Their use of internationally known brands as part of the movie is genius,” said Winnol director of content and licensing Grant Kahn. “It is our goal to make the commercials shown in the movie part of a viral campaign that makes people embrace commercials as content.” Nwd also acquired rights to the film in India.

First, indieWIRE's Eric Kohn hosted a "Meet the New Directors" panel at the Film Society of Lincoln Center earlier this week and you can watch it here. It runs 63'12" and the guests are Jason Cortlund and Julia Halperin (Now, Forager); Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi (5 Broken Cameras); Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot); Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds); Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty); Joann Sfar (The Rabbi's Cat); Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st); and Clarissa Knoll (Street Vendor Cinema).
And the Fslc has posted separate Q&A sessions with Leon (Gimme), Pablo Giorgelli (Las Acacias) and Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption), all on one page.
Meantime, we've entered the home stretch. New Directors/New Films rolls on through the weekend and closes on Sunday night with a surprise — whatever it may be, it'll probably rank a roundup of its own. That aside, here's where we wrap it up.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art have announced that they'll be presenting 29 features and 12 shorts in the 41st edition of New Directors/New Films, running March 21 through April 1). The series, dedicated to "the discovery of new works by emerging and dynamic filmmaking talent," opens with Nadine Labaki's Where Do We Go Now? (see the Cannes roundup). A few notes on the other features:
The Ambassador (Mads Brügger). The La Weekly's Karina Longworth suggests that Brügger is "sort of the Vice magazine version of Sacha Baron Cohen, as financed by Lars von Trier. My former hometown of seven years, Santa Barbara welcomed me back with open arms — and by open arms I mean aggressive festival volunteers, and a short but unpleasant bout of food poisoning. I still love you regardless, State Street. Between bouts of trying not to hork in public, I managed to swing some wildly different screenings that left me more fulfilled than not with my time at this year’s festival to this point. I squeaked into the Metro Theater II just in time to catch one of the more mystifying but engaging films at the festival, Victor Ginzburg’s Generation P, an adaptation of Russian novelist Victor Pelevin’s book of the same name. I was born in 1980 — so while I do have some reference points for that decade, I’m considered a child of the 90s. I have vague recollections of the waning years of the Cold War, never...

If you are going to be late for a film called The Slut, be prepared to be seated in the front rows. For those who came in for the sleaze, it offered an eyeful of graphic love making scenes. Those in for the love of cinema must have been disappointed. The Israeli film by Hagar Ben Asher who also stars was about a single mother who could not keep male attention at bay. Trouble arises when one of her lovers moves in with her. Not a complete wash out but the end disappointed.

The 2011 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow and will run until September 18th. Now you’re going to hear a lot about the celebrities in town, the parties going down and the massive queues, but at the end of the day Tiff is about the movies. And with over 330 movies playing this year, there’s definitely no shortage of films to choose from.
After much deliberation and careful calculation we’ve made our picks. Between the five of us covering the fest, we’re likely going to see close to 125 of the films playing Tiff this year. Yeah, it’s a lot of movies. Certainly more than can be listed here. So we’ve asked our writers to narrow it down to their top three picks.

News is rolling out of Toronto for this year's festival, with the Galas and the Special Presentations sections announced. As always with Tiff, the sheer number of films can seem overwhelming, but with new films by David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method, pictured above), Terence Davies (!), Francis Ford Coppola, Wang Xiaoshuai, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, and William Friedkin added to big names that premiered already this year (including Almodóvar, Von Trier, Nanni Moretti, and Nicolas Winding Refn) it looks like the 2011 iteration will be as packed with must-see cinema as ever before. Photo: Content Media The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival announced 56 more movies added to its festival line-up this year with selections in the Vanguard, Midnight Madness, Documentaries, City to City and Tiff Kids programs. And to be honest, the line-up is filled with titles, most of which are absolutely new to me.
I have seen one of the films under the Vanguard banner, a selection of young and cutting edge features and I've heard of Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31, Ben Wheatley's Kill List (watch the trailer to the right) was a hit at South by Southwest earlier this year and the documentary selections include familiar names such as Werner Herzog, Morgan Spurlock, Jonathan Demme, Alex Gibney and Wim Wenders, the latter of which is delivering a 3D documentary centered on the dance world of Pina Bausch and her company.

It's a shaved down lucky seven, from last year's eleven titles that are the make-up of Tiff's Vanguard section and we've got some noteworthy films to point out including the world premiere to Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Headshot (see pic above) which promises to be a rather interesting cinematic experience. While last year we got such items as Monsters, Our Day Will Come and Adam Wingard's A Horrible Way to Die (he returns to the line-up this year in the Midnight Madness section), this edition appears to be a cut above, they've got a pair of excellent features we caught back in Cannes with Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31 (Un Certain Regard) and Justin Kurzel's Snowtown (Critics' Week). A highly touted item from Venice has also made the cut, and we're especially glad that we'll be able to see Tahar Rahim violently and emotionally lose it in Love and...

Russian vampires made a splash with fans when Timur Bekmambetov's visionary Night/Day Watch films rolled out of the land of vodka and really thick accents, and they're about to take center stage once again in a big screen adaptation of Viktor Pelevin's Empire, V.
According to Variety Cult Russian novelist Viktor Pelevin's vision of modern Russia as a vampire nation is to be turned into a feature film by New York- and Moscow-based writer-director-producer Victor Ginzburg, who has acquired the rights.
Ginzburg, who released his first feature last month, an adaptation of Pelevin's Generation P - a bizarre journey through the drugs and power-driven world of advertising in Russia in the early 1990s - says Empire, V is a loose sequel that takes off in even more weird directions.

Director Victor Ginzburg is poised to bring Viktor Pelevin's Russian vampire novel "Empire V" to the screen. The book is actually a sequel to Pelevin's "Generation P," which Ginzburg has already adapted. The follow-up veers into vampire territory, following a young bloodsucker in Moscow as he maneuvers through love, money and obsession with beauty. Is he an vampire version of Patrick Bateman? Ginzburg says the story "redefines the genre." He hopes to start the film in early 2012; his take on Generation P is currently played at Cannes.
