How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.

This year’s Humanitas Prizes for screenwriting, usually handed out at Beverly Hilton ceremony, were announced via the Los Angeles Times this year in solidarity with the unions on strike, including the Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers. And on top of awarding shows like The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Humanitas, an organization founded in 1974, also honored the striking Writers Guild of America itself with its “Voice for Change” award. Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.
Humanitas’ mission is to tell “stories that explore the human experience because we believe that the act of acknowledging our common humanity is transformational.” With that in mind, this year the organization’s winners include The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin for the teleplay for the emotional and critically lauded episode “Long, Long Time” in the drama television category. Amazon Studios has partnered with IllumiNative to create the IllumiNative Episodic Directors Program.
Over the next year, the inaugural cohort of early- and mid-career Indigenous filmmakers will shadow directors on the upcoming second season of the streamer’s neo-Western series Outer Range, which includes an Indigenous character among its main cast. The participants will be paid for their work, with travel and accommodations covered. Although the filmmakers will not be hired to direct an episode as part of their program participation (a component first introduced by NBCU Launch and subsequently adopted by other studios such as Disney), Amazon says that it will consider program alumni for future gigs.
“Amazon Studios is intentional in developing accurate stories and characters by and about Native peoples, and IllumiNative has been an invaluable resource in this work,” Amazon Studios and Prime Video global head of Deia Latasha Gillespie said in a statement. “We are...

In Showtime docuseries Murder in Big Horn, directors Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin take viewers on a sobering journey through several higher-profile cases of murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls in Montana. Across its three hours, the duo examines the similar and dissimilar ways the crisis — and the active effort to return them home or get justice in the wake of their deaths — has played out.
With its conclusion airing on Sunday, Feb. 19, the show weaves previous cases and evidence with new revelations while looking at another element fueling the crisis: crimes within the community. It’s a calculated choice that trusts its viewers’ understanding of its own storytelling structure, which as a whole meticulously unpacks all the factors at play around this ongoing string of murders and disappearances.

On February 3, 2023, Showtime premiered the docuseries “Murder in Big Horn.” It spotlights the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (Mmiw) that has been prevalent since colonization. Directed by Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin, the three-part docuseries examines the circumstances surrounding many of these cases. Watch the trailer below.
The docuseries told solely through the perspectives of those involved: Native families, Native journalists, and local law enforcement officers, currently holds an 82 freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read our review roundup below.

Late to the game, but still somewhat curious, Hollywood has slowly been integrating the phenomenon of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women into television storylines in recent years. Naturally, the industry has latched onto this long-unfolding tragedy in its usual way: Making Mmiw a secondary storyline within the development of a white protagonist.
I’m firmly in the “something is generally better than nothing” camp, but I would never say that shows like Big Sky, Dexter: New Blood, Alaska Daily or Three Pines were even fleetingly About Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. They namecheck a trend.
Showtime’s new docuseries Murder in Big Horn is actually about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (often extended to include “and Girls”) and, as such, it’s important. Directors Razelle Benally, an Indigenous filmmaker who identifies as Oglala Lakota/Diné, and Matthew Galkin (Showtime’s Murder in the Bayou) endeavor to give names and faces...

Their stories are achingly similar. A young Native American woman goes to a house party, or drinks with friends, or just ventures out into the Montana night. She doesn’t come home. Law enforcement, after untangling questions of jurisdiction, conducts a search. Sometimes the bodies are recovered, the cause of death chalked up as “hypothermia.” Sometimes they’re never found at all.

There are thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women (Mmiw) across the United States and Canada, and in Montana those numbers are particularly high. Over the past decade, dozens of young Indigenous women and girls from the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Nations have disappeared from Big Horn County, Mt and the surrounding area.
More often than not, those disappearances go unreported and unsolved. When bodies are found, local authorities are quick to write off the cause of death as exposure or hypothermia, despite contrasting evidence.
Showtime’s three-part documentary series, “Murder In Big Horn,” which bowed last month at the Sundance Film Festival, spotlights that epidemic by amplifying the voices closest to it. Filmmakers Razelle Benally (Oglala Lakota/Diné) and Matthew Galkin go deep into the community to interview family members, law enforcement, lawyers, local journalists and community leaders to paint a full and harrowing picture of what life as...

Whodunit? That question has long animated true crime. But as crime documentaries — about murder in particular — have multiplied in recent years, so too have the approaches to telling such stories. For filmmakers seeking to transcend what can be a formulaic genre, the question of "Who?" has taken a back seat to "So what?" What do these stories about victims and perpetrators say about us as a society? And why does it matter?

‘Murder in the Bayou': Ethan Brown’s Question Isn’t ‘Who Did It?’ It’s ‘Why Didn’t They Solve This?’
“Murder in the Bayou” — the Showtime docuseries from investigative journalist Ethan Brown and director Matthew Galkin — aired its fifth and final episode Friday. TheWrap spoke with Brown and Galkin about bringing the murder cases of eight women from Louisiana’s Jefferson Davis Parish to the small screen, and the questions that surround the still-open investigation.
Based on Brown’s best-selling novel of the same name, the series followed the murders of eight women who became known as the Jeff Davis 8: Loretta Lynn Chaisson Lewis, Ernestine Marie Daniels Patterson, Kristen Gary Lopez, Whitnei Dubois, Laconia “Muggy” Brown, Crystal Shay Benoit Zeno, Brittney Gary, and Necole Guillory. The oldest was 30; the youngest, 17.

A new piece over on Jezebel alleges that Spurlock’s production company is one built on a “fratty, boys’ club” culture, and that they were party to various acts of harassment at the hands of both Spurlock and his long-time partner Jeremy Chilnick.

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

Hey music fans, here’s a holiday treat for you. The Pixies formed in 1986 and split up just seven years later, parting on rocky terms. Eleven years later (in 2004), they reunited, and they’ve been touring and producing music since. In the years between, though, their music influenced some of the most iconic bands to emerge in the '90s, including Nirvana, Weezer, and countless others. In 2006, documentarians Matthew Galkin and Steven Cantor got behind the camera to explore the band’s reunion and get to the bottom of their split more than a decade earlier. The film, “loudQuietloud: A Film About the Pixies,” is now viewable in its entirety on YouTube courtesy of Noisey’s new Found Tapes show, which features rare, bizarre, and entertaining videos. The 85-minute documentary opens with concert footage of the band playing “Where Is My Mind” (arguably one of their most recognizable songs, popularized...

Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope was one of Peter's favorite movies [1] at Toronto and one of my favorite movies [2] of Fantastic Fest. It's a totally different film for the Super Size Me director as he stays off camera and follows several unique people on their journey to the mecca of pop culture, San Diego Comic-Con. In doing so , Spurlock dissects not only why Comic Con is such an amazing event, but why we geeks love what we love. The film is beautiful, inspiring, funny and, up until today, had only played at festivals. That'll change next year because Wrekin Hill Entertainment and the National Entertainment Collectibles Association have acquired the film for theatrical distribution in Spring 2012. In addition, the film will tour larger venue and bring audiences outside of San Diego their own kind of mini-Comic-Con experience complete with Q&A's, contests, presentations,...
