Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

As the new year dawns, a fresh cinematic universe is on the horizon for DC Comics-based projects. With James Gunn at the helm, he doesn’t shy away from dispelling rumors surrounding ‘Superman: Legacy’ and potential additions to the revamped Dcu.
Recent rumors circulating about planned and unplanned Dcu properties have centered on the speculated ‘Waller’ TV Show. Initially intended as a 13-episode series, scripts were mostly complete, and casting had commenced. Phil Abraham was set to direct the initial two episodes, with Freddie Stroma reprising his role as Vigilante and Sean Gunn taking on Maxwell Lord. Supporting roles were to be filled by John Douglas Thompson and Ivanna Sakhno. The season was slated to be split into two parts, with the first half premiering in the spring of 2025 and the second half in the fall.

With the new year comes a new cinematic universe for the projects based on DC comics, and now that Gunn is officially in charge, he really does not hold back on debunking various rumors related to ‘Superman: Legacy’ and other possible projects that might be developed as a part of newly overhauled Dcu.
Recently, some rumors resurfaced regarding planned and (unplanned)Dcu properties, mostly related to the alleged ‘Waller’ TV Show. ‘Waller’ was supposed to be a TV series consisting of 13 episodes. The majority of scripts were complete, and casting has begun. Phil Abraham was supposed to direct the first two episodes. Freddie Stroma would return as Vigilante, and Sean Gunn would portray Maxwell Lord. John Douglas Thompson and Ivanna Sakhno joining in supporting roles. The season was supposed to be divided into two parts, with the first half set to premiere in the spring of 2025, followed by the second half in the fall.

This post contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #26.
In 1940, Mlj Publishers had a problem. Their standout artist Jack Cole (best known as the creator of Plastic Man) had left the company, abandoning the hit series Pep Comics and its star the Comet. Without Cole’s pencils, the Comet didn’t pop in the same way, and the company needed something drastic to save its sales. So in Pep Comics #17, a thug guns the Comet down, inspiring his brother to become a new hero called the Hangman.
The first superhero death in comic books set the trend for all that followed. Pep killed off the Comet not for any story reason, but because they wanted to goose sales. And not only does his death launch another hero, but he doesn’t stay dead for good — Mlj (now Archie Comics) brought back the Comet in the 1960s and the 1980s, eventually licensing him to DC Comics.

1953 was an important year for Marilyn Monroe. She'd been appearing in films since 1947, but '53 is when she became a star. That year, she appeared in three films for 20th Century Fox and one of them stands tall as defining her legendary screen persona: director Howard Hawks' "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."
Monroe plays Lorelei Lee, the titular blonde and one of the film's two co-leads; the other is her brunette best friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell). Lorelei is a bit ditzy and not shy about her expensive tastes (in men and otherwise), but there's no more loyal friend around.
Earlier that year, Monroe starred in the technicolor thriller "Niagara" as the murderous Rose Loomis, who conspires with her lover (Richard Allen) to murder her husband (Joseph Cotton). Hawks' film, though, was a musical comedy. Since she was playing a totally different type of character, Monroe needed to show a different side of herself.

1964, 1965 / 1.33:1 / 975 Min.
Starring Ray Barrett, Robert Easton, David Graham, Don Mason, Lois Maxwell
Written by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson
Directed by Alan Pattillo, David Elliott, John Kelly, Desmond Saunders
If nothing else, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Stingray should be celebrated for inspiring Team America: World Police, the gonzo marionettes-on-the-make political satire from South Park agitators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. If their 2004 farce was designed to provoke just about everybody, Stingray was also pretty out there, albeit in a trippy, Summer of Love kind of way. An aquatic puppet show swimming in psychedelic color, languid pacing, and underwater scenes apparently filmed inside a lava lamp, Stingray reflected the inveterate stoner’s mindset better than anything in Yellow Submarine. The entire series has just been released in an extravagant five disc box set from Network, Stingray: The Complete Series Deluxe Edition,...

Warner Bros. and DC Films have tapped writer Cat Vasko to script “Plastic Man” as a female-led action-adventure.
DC-based film production president Walter Hamada and exec Chantal Nong are overseeing for the studio as it shifts the focus of the two-year-old project.
The studio unveiled the initial “Plastic Man” pic in 2018, based on DC Comics’ quirky character that debuted in 1941. Amanda Idoko, who wrote “Breaking News in Yuba County,” was hired to pen the movie.

Black List writer Cat Vasko will write a female-centric version of “Plastic Man” for Warner Bros. and DC Films, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Amanda Idoko wrote the previous draft of the script which was meant to be a comedic action-adventure script. Although still in the earliest stages of development, Vasko will take the project in a new direction with a female lead.
“Plastic Man” was created by cartoonist Jack Cole for Quality Comics in 1941 and was later acquired by DC Comics. The character’s true identity is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian and the character was one of the first superheroes to incorporate humor into mainstream action storytelling.
“Plastic Man” has been published in several solo series and has interacted with other DC superheroes such as Batman. He was even a member of the Justice League at one point.
Former New Line co-founder Bob Shaye will executive produce.

“When you’re walking backwards, and you roll your shoulder backwards, it’s not a seduction—it’s a con.”
It’s one of the first impressions we get of Michelle Williams’ Gwen Verdon as she dispenses advice to a group of tired dancers performing “Big Spender” during her husband Bob Fosse’s 1969 film Sweet Charity. It’s a moment in the first episode of FX’s Fosse/Verdon, up for 17 Primetime Emmys, which shows how, not God, but Verdon, was always in the details of the choreographer-turned-filmmaker’s theatrical and cinema canon. To this day, Fosse remains the only entertainer to win the triple crown of an Oscar, Emmy and Tony in the same year—1973—all before he checked into a mental hospital feeling suicidal.
“There wasn’t a dance that she couldn’t dance, everything was in her repertoire,” Williams says of Verdon’s range. Unlike Fosse, she was a trained choreographer,...

FX's buzzy new miniseries Fosse/Verdon tells the story of one of the most famous pairs in showbiz history: choreographer and director Bob Fosse and his wife, dancer and choreographer Gwen Verdon. While it's Fosse's work that has been held up as the groundbreaking gold standard of modern Broadway dance, Verdon was iconic in her own right.
Verdon was a dancer from the age of 6, but her breakout performance came in 1953, when she turned a featured dancing role in the Cole Porter musical Can-Can into a showstopper that won her audience adoration and her first Tony Award. Her next musical, Damn Yankees, would prove to be one of her life-defining roles, in more ways than one. Her role as seductive, morally complicated Lola became one of her most iconic performances (earning her another Tony Award) - and it was on this show that she met Fosse, who she married five years later.

While talking to Cb about the character, Schwartz explains that Plastic Man could be DC’s Deadpool:

Is the world ready for a Plastic Man movie? They had better be, because Warner Bros. is working on one.
There's a Plastic Man movie in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Deadline reports that Amanda Idoko (ABC's The Mayor) is working on a Plastic Man screenplay at the moment. If you're not familiar with the character, he has been around since 1941, the creation of brilliant cartoonist Jack Cole. The character is a former criminal, Patrick "Eel" O'Brian, who after a robbery gone wrong, finds himself doused in chemicals that leave him with the ability to form his body into nearly any shape imaginable. He's a wise-cracking, comedic character, who has remained a semi-regular presence in comics since his creation.
This is far from the first time Plastic Man has flirted with the screen. The character had a middling animated series in the 1980s,...

Screenwriter Amanda Idoko ("The Mayor") will adapt the 1941 comic book superhero "Plastic Man" for a developing Warners feature, with New Line's Bob Shaye ("The Mask") on board as executive producer:
'Plastic Man', aka 'Patrick "Eel" O'Brian' debuted in Quality Comics' "Police Comics" #1 (1941), created by cartoonist Jack Cole as one of the first superheroes to incorporate humor into mainstream action storytelling.
"'Patrick "Eel" O'Brian', became part of a burglary ring, specializing as a safecracker. During a late-night heist at the 'Crawford Chemical Works', he and his three fellow gang members were surprised by a night watchman.
"During the gang's escape, Eel was shot in the shoulder and doused with a large drum of unidentified chemical liquid. He escaped to the street only to discover that his gang had driven off without him.

Warner Bros. and DC Films are in early development on “Plastic Man,” a movie based on DC Comics’ quirky character who debuted in 1941.
Amanda Idoko, who wrote the upcoming Allison Janney-Laura Dern-starrer “Breaking News in Yuba County,” has been hired to write “Plastic Man.” Bob Shaye, the co-founder of New Line Cinema, will executive produce. No director is currently attached to the pic.
“Plastic Man,” created by Jack Cole for Quality Comics, is able to transform himself into any shape. An orphan forced to live on the streets, he turned to a life of crime, was shot during a heist, and was exposed to an unknown chemical liquid that gave his body the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce, and mold himself into any shape. Thanks to a monk who tended to him while he was shot, he turned to law and order, and began...

I’ve seen a lot of DC fans talk about how much they would like to see a sequel to Man of Steel. Superman is one of their strangest characters in every sense of the word, but instead the studio is developing a Plastic Man movie.
The news of the Plastic Man film comes from Deadline, and they are reporting that Amanda Idoko (Breaking News in Yuba County) is set to write the script. Idoko really hasn’t done much, so this is going to be a huge project for her. As of right now the film doesn’t have a director or a greenlight, but they are developing it.
I can see why they’d want to make a Plastic Man movie. It’s a character that can deliver a lot of comedy, and that’s something they might be looking at tapping into more, especially with fans so excited about Shazam!

Deadline has confirmed that Amanda Idoko is adapting the Quality Comics’ superhero Plastic Man for an upcoming Warner Bros./DC feature, which does not yet have a director nor a green light.
Jack Cole created the character in 1941, and DC absorbed the brand in 1956. Plastic Man was a member of the Justice League and had a Saturday morning TV series that ran from 1979 to 1981. Plastic Man is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, who was originally a crook. When a heist goes sideways, he is drenched with chemicals, and when he wakes up learns he has the power to stretch and form his body like rubber. He then begins fighting crime.
Former New Line chief Bob Shaye is an Ep on the project. Idoko’s credits include the ABC comedy series The Mayor as well as the upcoming movie Breaking News in Yuba County, which stars Allison Janney and Laura Dern and is directed by Tate Taylor.

The curtain is falling on the MGM musical, and Gene Kelly’s final song and dance at the studio is for a Paris-set show biz tale about a dancing star and his trio of showgirls. Actually, the comedy and the actresses get more attention than does Kelly. The gimmick is a Rashomon– like clash of conflicting testimony, but we prefer to concentrate on the sexy dancing and Kay Kendall’s hilarious drunk act. Who thought a boozy beauty wailing opera songs would be funny?
