Roberto Jr. and Luis Clemente spoke about their late father Roberto Clemente Sr.’s legacy as a baseball icon in their new uInterview.
On December 31, 1972, Roberto died after his plane crashed into the waters off the coast of Puerto Rico at 38. The purpose of his fateful journey was to transport crucial relief supplies to the earthquake-stricken victims in Nicaragua.
As a black-Latino player, Roberto faced significant discrimination throughout his career. Roberto’s relationship with the press was varied due to his assertive nature, and he felt he didn’t get the respect he deserved in his time.
Luis told uInterview founder Erik Meers of his father, “He certainly knew how he was going to take this privilege he was given to play, and he from the beginning knew he was representing the working class, the people that did not have a voice at the time. He found out about, you know,...

It’s possible to define the greatness of Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente with numbers.
Precisely 3,000 hits. Twelve Gold Gloves. Two World Series titles with a franchise that hadn’t won one in the 30 years before Clemente’s arrival. One World Series Mvp and one National League Mvp. The first Latino player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
The numbers for Roberto Clemente are fairly phenomenal.
But they’re inadequate.
Roberto Clemente is in a pantheon of sports figures because of the trail he blazed for Latino and specifically Caribbean players. He’s revered because his commitment to humanitarian causes was so all-encompassing that his death, at the age of 38, came while transporting supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He’s iconic because the things he did on the field that couldn’t always be measured statistically — his throwing arm, his on-field intensity — bordered on Bunyanesque.

It’s Game 6 of the 1971 World Series. Orioles-Pirates. Tied game, bottom of the ninth, two outs. Mark Belanger is on first when Don Buford rips a double down the line. Belanger should score easily on the play. Not today. In right field, the Pirates’ Roberto Clemente plays the carom perfectly — not easy in a visitor’s ballpark — and throws a perfect strike to catcher Manny Sanguillen, his best friend on the team. Belanger has to hold at third.
It was an extraordinary throw that Clemente made routinely during a Hall of Fame career that included two world titles, 3,000 hits, four batting titles, and 12 Golden Gloves. But it wasn’t all highlights, as the new documentary, “Clemente,” shows in aching detail. Even Clemente’s greatest talents were turned against him in an America that viewed number 21 as already having three strikes against him: Black, Puerto Rican and outspoken. Matter of fact,...

As famed Afro-Peruvian activist, choreographer, and poet Victoria Santa Cruz once said, "We need to recover our history, tell our own stories, and sing our own songs."
It is this sentiment that I live by when discussing Afrolatinidad. Afrolatinidad is not a new concept or idea. As a people and culture, Afro-Latinxs have been fighting for centuries to be seen, heard, acknowledged, and respected for their contributions to larger society. The term Afrolatinidad is used to describe the cultural identity and heritage of Black people from Latin America and Latin Americans of African descent, whose ancestors had undergone the experience of chattel slavery. Clarity is important here because there has been so much confusion about who is or isn't considered Afro-Latinx.
The confusion around Afro-Latinidad and who gets to claim it can be traced back to the complex history of mestizaje and racism in Latin America. Mestizaje refers to the mixing of Indigenous,...

The first time I heard "El Abayarde," I thought, "Who is this dude straight dropping fire lyrics on these reggaeton beats?!" Until then, reggaeton had been (at least to me) party music. It was my favorite beat to shake my ass to, and it filled me with pride to know that this genre had, in some part, blown up due to Puerto Rican artists. As a Boricua, I loved that all these up-and-coming lyricists were making their way stateside thanks to an infectious dembow beat the world couldn't resist. But to have someone spitting socially conscious lyrics - talking about police brutality, inequality, racism, and government corruption - was something new. Tego Calderón was the one who brought this consciousness to the world of reggaeton.
It makes sense that Calderón took on this mantle. Santurce, Puerto Rico (where Calderón is originally from), has a long, proud history for Black Puerto Ricans.

When my father, Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated, I was 10 years old. Although I was heartbroken, I remember being moved to learn that members of the Pittsburgh Pirates, led by the great Roberto Clemente, refused to play in the days following the assassination out of respect for my father.
Although other teams did not follow the Pirates example, Clemente and his white teammate, Dave Wickersham issued a statement saying “We are doing this because we white and Black players respect what Dr. King has done for mankind.”
There is a great tradition of African American professional and amateur athletes standing up for social justice. Jackie Robinson broke the “color barrier” in 1947 and continued to speak out for civil rights throughout his career. Muhammad Ali cited his religious convictions and opposition to the Vietnam War when he resisted the military draft in 1966. Olympic track stars John Carlos and Tommy Smith...

It all started innocently enough with a drunken question meant to jumpstart another dull Saturday night out on the town. What it became however, was an hour long debate on par with other eternal struggles like Lakers vs. Celtics, Capitalism vs. Communism, and Godzilla vs. King Kong. The question posed was innocent enough: Who is the greatest sci-fi/fantasy hero of all time? Names like Superman, Harry Potter, Robert Patrick, and the Original Green Power Ranger were tossed around, but in reality, the real answer to this question isn’t that hard to come by…it’s Luke Skywalker. Bar none, Luke Skywalker is the greatest sci-fi/fantasy hero of all time. In terms of adversity, skill, importance, and the weight of his failure, no other character comes close to matching the last Jedi.

With the surprise success of 2013's 42, Legendary Pictures wants to keep their interests on the field. To do so they'll trade Jackie Robinson for Roberto Clemente, as the Pittsburgh Pirates legend gets his life story optioned for the big screen. The untitled film is based upon David Maraniss' "Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero", and the company also entered agreements with Clemente's family for his life rights. Additionally, this upcoming biopic apparently comes from the heart for Legendary CEO Thomas Tull, as he's a board member on the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Clemente is the first Latino player ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. This was an honor served posthumously after the baseball player died in a plane crash in Puerto Rico on New Year's Eve, 1972, following efforts to help organize disaster relief in Nicaragua after an earthquake.

Is "42" right for your kids? Although it's rated PG-13, "42" is a fine pick for parents with kids ages 9 to 11 –- as long as they are mature enough to deal with the racial discrimination and slurs that are depicted in the biopic. It's a good idea to prepare kids and teens with an overview of Jackie Robinson's life and the institutional racism that existed not just in Major League Baseball but all of American society at the time. Here are five reasons to take your teen(s) to see "42." 1. It's a Lesson in Civil Rights: Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) didn't just break the baseball color barrier, he also prepared America for the Civil Rights Movement. Sure, it took another two decades to fully materialize, but Jackie Robinson stepping up to the plate was more than a sports milestone; it's one of the most important watershed moments in the history of the United States.

It’s been eight months since we profiled Jamie Nieto, the Olympic High Jumper, turned actor, turned director. I’m still waiting for the Roberto Clemente movie and the Blood Brothers web series. Come on Jamie when are they going to come out!??? In the meantime we can watch Jamie Nieto on his new online interview series produced by his Raising the Bar production company, "Holla Atcha Boy." No, he does not interview people on a street corner. The Olympic athlete interviews athletes and celebrities! The title of the show is a little jarring (okay A Lot) but I’m grateful that he didn’t name it Spikes of Gold or Dreams of Gold. It’s Holla Atcha Boy. According to the urban...

President Barack Obama was recently in Illinois to give a speech about gun violence, but his presence came too late for one Chicago teen. An 18-year-old woman was killed on the same day her sister sat behind Obama at his Hyde Park Career Acadamy speech.
Janay Mcfarlane was shot in the head at around 11:30 p.m. after visiting friends and family in North Chicago. Her mother tells the Chicago Sun-Times that the bullet was meant for the friend she was with. Earlier in the day, Janay's 14-year-old sister Destini was reportedly only feet from Obama when he spoke to a Chicago crowd about the need for gun legislation.
Meanwhile, a high school student named Frances Colon was killed in the city on the same day in a separate instance. She is the third student from Roberto Clemente High School shot and killed in Chicago this year, ABC News reports.

Espn has yet to announce the next round of documentaries to premiere in its "30 for 30" series, but here's guessing "The Clemente Effect," the trailer for which was just released, will be one of them. Directed by Mario Diaz, the film looks at the life of Puerto Rican baseball legend Roberto Clemente, a right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates player until his tragic death in a 1972 aviation accident at age 38, while on his way to deliver air to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. "He stuck his neck out for us and the Hispanic world is better for it," muses one interviewee, while another speaks of the prejudice Clemente faced: "I'm surprised, I didn't know they named a park after him. He wasn't even allowed to stay in the hotels with us." Espn has not yet announced a premiere date for the doc.

The Clemente Effect, a new Espn documentary on the life of the late Puerto Rican baseball right fielder, is slated to debut in the sports network soon. In the documentary, directed by Mario Diaz, Roberto Clemente’s “powerful life is examined.” In 1960, Clemente became the first Hispanic player to win a World Series in a starter position. He also received the Mvp award in 1966, along with the World Series Mvp Award in 1971. Hailed as a hero in his hometown of Puerto Rico, Clemente became a sports icon at the international level. Clemente is also known for his charity work in Latin America; he died in a plane crash while attempting to deliver aid to...

More often than not, auditions can feel thankless and ineffective. Actors may convince themselves that they did not get or were not right for the part and move on to the next audition. For Genia Nunez, simply showing up to read for one part was the key to ultimately landing another: the role of Cristina Zabala in the independent feature film “Baseball’s Last Hero: The Roberto Clemente Story.”The trek began for Nunez in February 2010 when she submitted herself online through Back Stage. She knew she was right for the role of Vera Clemente, wife of Roberto Clemente—the first Latino to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. “The part [of Vera] attracted me, the breakdown, everything that described the role,” Nunez says. “I said, ‘I can do this.’ ” Nunez auditioned in August of that year, was called in again in September, and had a final audition in...

The Bachelor bills itself as a modern-day fairytale — romantic wish-fulfillment for those of us who know better than to spend $13 seeing the latest from Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson. But strip it down and examine it under the Puerto Rican moonlight, and the show has as much to do with finding true love as its ABC comrade Winter Wipeout.

Let the exotic travels begin. We left Park City, Utah, and until the hometown dates that’s the last we’ll see of the continental United States. Our first tropical destination was a very small island off the coast of Puerto Rico called Vieques. We stayed at the very modern W hotel that sits right on its beautiful beaches.
When the girls arrived they came ashore via boat. You couldn’t really tell, but the surf was pretty big that day and the captain had a difficult time getting the boat on the beach so the ladies could get out.

The "Bachelor" and the ladies head for Puerto Rico, but it's no big deal because Courtney was just there. Frankly, I'm surprised they weren't turned away at the beach by a mob of angry Puerto Rican women who interacted with Courtney on her trip.
Nicki's Date
I love how Nicki says, "I feel like I'm very fortunate [to be going on the date]." Like, instead of saying "I'm very fortunate," she "thinks" she's very fortunate. Is she not sure? Does she have to wait and see if the date sucks or not? It's a stupid little thing, but it made me giggle.
And then I laugh harder when she squeals about the helicopter. We know there was no production assistant giving her electric shocks, the shot of them walking toward the helicopter was too wide. Perhaps Ben was pinching her really hard.
They are caught in a torrential downpour, but that's just better, it's romantic. Don't complain,...

"Bachelor" Ben and his 11 remaining ladies take off for sunny Puerto Rico in the latest episode. According to the episode description:
Nicki, the sensitive divorcee, learns that she will have the first one-on-one date. Ben picks her up via helicopter and the two escape to the mainland. They set out to explore charming, historic old San Juan when a thunderstorm strikes and they need to run for cover. Soaked through, they exchange their clothes for some authentic garb and then, coincidentally, the pair happen upon a local wedding.
The next day, Ben surprises nine women with a trip to the famed Roberto Clemente Baseball Stadium. It's all good fun as the group enjoy their time in the field. But then Chris Harrison informs them they will be playing a game against each other to decide who will get a beachside after-party with Ben. The losers will go back to the hotel.

Chandel: Shawn and Henry arguing over his call at the game. It's been a while since we've these two engage in an all-out shouting match, but what made it even funnier was that Gus and Juliet were watching and providing commentary. It was a pretty entertaining way to begin an episode.

Do you love classic baseball, and, in particular, are you a hardcore Yankees or Pirates fan? Does sitting down in front of a 50-year-old baseball game define the phrase "Sunday Afternoon"? Does your heart race at the thought of watching watch Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Roberto Clemente and Roger Maris play? If you answered yes to all of those questions, then you already know the drama of this game and may well want to own it.
If your not one such fan, you probably wont want to purchase this, but it does have some interesting points for more casual fans of the game (this reviewer included). It’s one of the last remaining baseball television broadcasts from its era, (accidently preserved in Bing Crosby’s wine cellar) and it’s fascinating to see how the game has changed in 50 years. Chuckie, the DJ/producer behind "dirty Dutch" house hits like "Let the Bass Kick" and the popular remix of David Guetta and Akon's "Sexy Bitch," is among the growing list of electronic dance music hitmakers exporting their brand of "unst-unst" to the States. But he'll make his mark Stateside in a big way as he joins Paul Oakenfold's Facelift Tour this fall.
With a tour schedule that includes more than 50 club dates, famed veteran DJ/producer Oakenfold will lead sets, along with Chuckie, Calvin Harris, DJs/ songwriting sisters Nervo, Sydney Sampson, Roger Sanchez and others.
Chuckie has had acts as diverse as Lmfao, Jermaine Dupri and Lil Jon jump on remixes of "Let the Bass Kick," while his version (with Lil Jon) of "Sexy Bitch" is a dance-floor burner.

The world continues to talk about Lady Gaga's video for "Alejandro," her latest and most provocative foray into the music video universe. It's an incredibly graphic, dark clip that features all sorts of religious imagery, out-of-this-world fashion and Madonna references. "Alejandro" has also elevated the name "Alejandro" to new heights.
But Gaga also references gentlemen named Fernando and Roberto in the song (which, if you remember, won the 2010 MTV Summer Jam poll), which begs the question: Even though the song is called "Alejandro," does the track also introduce the most famous men named Roberto and Fernando? Let's take a look.
Roberto
Roberto Benigni: Famous Italian film actor and director who won three Academy Awards for his work on "Life is Beautiful" (including Best Actor and Best Foreign Film). Famously told the Oscar audience that he wanted to make love to them all during one of his acceptance speeches.

Comic book readers know Brad Meltzer from his work on series like "Identity Crisis," "Justice League" or his current run on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight," but the celebrated author turned his focus to a distinctly different sort of hero for his latest project: a book collecting the stories of 52 real-life people and the little-known decisions that made them heroes.
Meltzer began writing "Heroes for My Son" eight years ago, when his first son, Jonas, was born. Wanting to collect the stories of people whose choices in life he could share with his son, Meltzer began a labor of love that finally culminated with the book's arrival on shelves this week.
"Heroes For My Son" offers a brief glimpse into the lives of everyone from Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel to Muppets creator Jim Henson, and while it isn't a comic book, it is a story of what makes people heroes.
