The North American rights deal for Japanese genre master Takashi Miike’s comedic vampire action thriller precedes the Midnight Madness screening in Toronto next month.
Yakuza Apocalypse premiered in Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and follows a mob lieutenant newly possessed of supernatural powers who is ordered by his dying mentor to destroy a rival gang.
Hayato Ichihara, Yayan Ruhian and Lily Franky star and the producers are Yoshinori Chiba, Shinichiro Masuda, Shinjiro Nishimura and Misako Saka.
“I wonder if it’s really okay to let this film loose outside of Japan,” said Miike. “As it’s not anything anyone can deal with on their own, it’s best to watch with friends.”
Samuel Goldwyn Films brokered the deal with Xyz Films on behalf of the filmmakers and has earmarked an October 9 release.

Released in the United States by WellgoUSA in November, the new Helldriver DVD/Blu-ray is chock full of low-budget zombie goodness. Originally released theatrically by Sushi Typhoon, bastard child of Japan’s Nikkatsu Corporation, Helldriver takes a unique and funny look at the zombie apocalypse.
An alien life form has turned the world’s worst mother into the queen bitch of zombies and proceeds to spew a dark ash into the skies over Northern Japan. The country has been split in two with a wall built to protect Southern Japan from being overrun by hungry zombies. With the north reduced to an apocalyptic wasteland the south has become overcrowded by survivors and food and living space is at a premium. The current administration wants to wipe out the zombies and take back the country, so they send a “volunteer” group on a suicide mission to...

The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film. Oh, what a night that was. As those following the Twitch Twitter feed already know the Canadian premiere of Mutant Girls Squad came at Fantasia last night and brought a few surprises with it.
Kicking things off, co-director Yoshihiro Nishimura and Sushi Typhoon producer Yoshinori Chiba hit the stage with Nyaff co-founder Marc Walkow - who also doubles as Sushi Typhoons North American press and festival guy - and dropped a pair of big, unannounced treats on the audience.
First: a promo reel for the entire Sushi Typhoon lineup including the first footage from Sion Sono's Cold Fish (very bloody), Noboru Iguchi's Zaborgar (very roboty), and Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi's Yakuza Weapon which featured regular Sushi Typhoon star Cay Izumi as a creation known simply as the Naked Human Weapon. I always assumed that kappa meant cucumber in Japanese, leaping to the conclusion as a result of an immodest consumption of kappa sushi rolls over the course of my life. I now know that kappa are green goblins that live in Japanese ponds, and who specialize in swimming and sumo wrestling; it is because the kappa's favorite food is cucumbers that the sushi received its name. These gaijin-centric facts are revealed early on in Death Kappa (2010) by a self-identified Professor Tanaka who speaks directly to the camera, and including them for viewers indicates the producers' awareness of the appeal of low-budget Japanese filmmaking in the West. Thanks to the unexpected success of splatter hits Tokyo Gore Police (2008) and Machine Girl (2008), producers Yōko Hayama and Yoshinori Chiba are familiar with the tastes of Western audiences and the first half of Death Kappa, with its similar barrel-scraping budget and gleeful stupidity, is familiar ground.

Fantasia Festival is North America [1]'s premiere (and largest) genre [2] film [3] festival [4]. It is also my favorite film festival and so I could not wait to share the highlights of this years line up. Here is a sneak peek at what we will be reviewing in the upcoming week of our podcast. Crush And Blush - Canadian Premiere South Korea Dir: Lee Kyoung-mi For her first feature, director Lee Kyoung-mi had some high-calibre assistance. Park Chan-wook produced, co-wrote and appears briefly in the film, as does Bong Joon-ho, director of The Host. This vaudevillian comedy doused in dark humour follows an unpopular woman who deviously schemes to seduce a colleague and keep him away from his mistress. Hong Hyo-jin seems born to play the fascinating and hard-to-follow Me-sook, an unforgettable, engaging and well-developed character. Love Exposure - Canadian Premiere Japan Dir: Sion Sono Prepare to witness miracles because Sion Sono (Suicide Club,...

Ok, so I'm lazy.. I copy and pasted the press release, which is after the break, and we have reviews of quite a few of the films playing, including White Lightnin', Left Bank, Blood River, Cryptic, Deadgirl, The Horsemen, I Sell the Dead.. with Kaifeck Murder coming soon (once I can figure out what to write).
Movies I'm really interested in seeing: French Pa flick Mutants, Smash Cut, Possibility of an Island, Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, and Thirst.
But alas, I won't be there. Instead, a friend of ours will be providing some reviews for the week he is there, so everyone give a big thanks to DirtyRobot! Woop!
Check out the film greatness after the break! Oh, and there's more to come...

While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:
