The Story: A goofball gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is forced to teach a remedial English class over the summer.
The Players: Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith & Shawnee Smith. Music by Danny Elfman. Directed by Carl Reiner.
The History: Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on “St. Elsewhere” which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on “Miami Vice” after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in The Presidio (even doing his own stunts – although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in Stealing Home,...

It’s got less than 40,000 miles on the odometer, comes with luxurious leather interior and sports a V-8 engine packing a whopping 200 horsepower. But its biggest selling point is that its previous owner was a retired NFL star who only drove it around town for light errands — and one epic freeway police chase.
It’s no mystery what happened to the late O.J. Simpson after he was arrested for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman — there was a trial, the glove, an acquittal, another 2008 arrest (and this time a conviction) for the armed robbery and kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas — but what about the white Ford Bronco? Back in June 1994, that vehicle captivated a nation, with 90 million viewers tuning in to watch the live news chopper coverage of it being pursued by scores of Los Angeles Police Department cars along...

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

True crime stories are in vogue, and there is no dearth of shows, movies, and documentaries in this genre. Such stories allow the human mind to understand how the psyche of a killer works and what could be the motivation behind the crimes he or she committed. There are also stories of serial killers such as Charles Sobhraj and Ted Bundy, who committed many murders and remained elusive for many years until they were caught. There was a psychology behind why men like them committed crimes and how they camouflaged themselves for a long time before law and order caught up to them. Catch Me a Killer is a show about a female criminal profiler who went on to be successful at her job of catching criminals.

Plot details are under wraps. Falling under Aggregate’s first-look deal with Netflix across film and TV, the sale comes at a busy time for the company, which most recently set up comedy The Chaperone at the streamer, as a potential star vehicle for Bateman. Recently bringing in Amblin vet John Buderwitz to serve as VP of Film, the company also last summer teamed with Netflix in a bidding war over David Gauvey Herbert’s 2021 Esquire magazine article “Daddy Ball,” which is being developed as a limited series for Bateman to direct, star in, and co-ep alongside Costigan and Roxie Rodriguez.

Every town seems to have that one house. The one that children walk by with hushed tones and dare each other to sneak onto the porch or ring the doorbell of. In the movies it’s the Myers House, 1428 Elm (at least in the later movies), or the House on Neibolt Street—usually run down and harboring a frightening history. In my neighborhood growing up, it was not a dilapidated old house, just one that seemed very out of place among the homes of the working class that surrounded it. It was a huge two-story white house, buttressed with gigantic pillars, and surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. I never saw anyone come in or out and I always wondered who lived there. In my mind it was a rich old Mrs. Deagle from Gremlins type, and I wondered, “what’s going on in there?” That question is the engine that...

If you’re under the impression that #Cybersleuths: The Idaho Murders is some sort of exposé on the Tiktok herd that believes they’re on an episode of True Detective or that it will give you real insight on the truth about the terrible tragedy that occurred in Idaho in November 2022, then I’ll stop you right here. Do not waste your time trying to watch this debacle of a documentary that doesn’t understand if it wants to heroize its subjects or paint them as complete failures. I suppose if I were any of the Tiktokers on there, I would be hugely embarrassed right now, but at the same time, I may have gained another 10,000 followers, so who cares, no? I mean, honestly, just because we’re a historically true crime-loving species doesn’t mean we’ll gobble up anything dropped at our doorstep. Can I sue for fake marketing?...

Dozens of American women lost their lives after an encounter with Ted Bundy, but it was a different tale for his wife, Carole Ann Boone. Although Boone was married to the vile American serial killer for barely six years (1980 – 1986), she earned an eternal reputation as the spouse of one of history’s most cold-hearted killers. For supporting Bundy and failing to see the manipulative camouflage of his foul character, Boone is often portrayed as a slow-witted woman so strongly infatuated with Bundy’s appealing looks that she forsakes common sense. To cut her some slack, Ted Bundy was charming...

Actor Charlize Theron famously won an Oscar for her starring role in the feature Monster. But the dramatic transformation she did for the movie almost interfered with its release.
Charlize Theron once shared why some were concerned about ‘Monster’ Charlize Theron | Ethan Miller/WireImage
Theron was heavily praised for her role as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. But leading up to the movie, few thought it would’ve gotten the positive buzz it did. The film’s director Patty Jenkins once told IGN that the feature was well on its way to being released on DVD. Theron’s involvement might’ve helped Monster secure a theatrical release.
“It’s banking on a straight to video release. Particularly because this was not Ted Bundy, this was living people right now who still were dealing with it. Aileen was alive at the time and there were people’s families. So for me,...

Imagine you’re in the middle of watching Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon try to outscore each other in game 5 of the NBA Finals when all of a sudden your broadcasters cut to O.J. Simpson slowly engaging in a police chase. Imagine further that you’re now so invested in the chase that you couldn’t possibly pull yourself from the TV. And who is that you see but Snake Plissken. That’s right, Kurt Russell has direct ties to the O.J. Simpson chase which came a few days after the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman.
As Kate Hudson told Jimmy Kimmel, the family lived near Simpson’s home at the time and Kurt Russell found his opportunity to be part of history. “It was the big chase. And Kurt…O.J. was on the 405 and Kurt all of sudden just went, ‘Oh,...

The not-so-secret fact about premieres is that the actors rarely watch, usually ducking out when the lights go down. They spend the film’s duration smoking cigarettes and reciting the cinema’s version of the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, i.e. the director’s predilection to use my worst take.”
That was not the case at Sundance’s world premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a ghostly thriller about the Payne family, a bougie clan with a significant number of problems including a spectral, uh, presence that could be friend or foe. On multiple trips to the washroom—blast the diuretic qualities of Diet Mountain Dew–I spied the entire cast watching the film with edge-of-the-seat anxiety, much like the rest of the theatre..

Shanola Hampton doesn’t think audiences are really prepared for what’s about to go down in the Found season finale.
The NBC series wraps its first season on Tuesday with an episode that the star told Deadline left her “in awe.”
After the penultimate episode, when Hampton’s Gabi Moseley finally revealed to her M&a colleague Dhan [Karan Oberoi] that she’d not only been been holding her kidnapper Sir [Mark-Paul Gosselaar] captive in her basement but using him to help solve the firm’s missing persons cases, her carefully kept secret seems like it’s close to unraveling. According to Hampton, the final episode will feature a moment between Gabi and the rest of the M&a crew that is so raw, she had a visceral reaction to filming the scene.
“By the end of it, Gabi ends up in the fetal position on the ground,” she said.

Exclusive: The BBC is developing a drama series about Bible John, one of Britain’s most notorious unidentified serial killers.
The as-yet-untitled show is understood to be in early-stage development with the BBC drama division. Buccaneer Media, which produces the likes of Irvine Welsh adaptation Crime and Paramount+ series The Burning Girls, is behind the development. The Pembrokeshire Murders scribe Nick Stevens was writing but is no longer attached, we understand.
Nicknamed due to his repeatedly quoting from the bible and condemnation of adultery while in the company of his final victim, Bible John is thought to have murdered three young women – Patricia Docker, Jemima MacDonald and Helen Puttock – between 1968 and 1969 in Glasgow, Scotland.
He has never been found, although several suspects have been linked to the case, including convicted serial killer and rapist Peter Tobin, but this was eventually disproved by DNA evidence.

Amazon has emerged the victor in another massive bidding war.
Following a competitive process, the Jennifer Salke-led streamer’s MGM Studios has won the rights to adapt the Vanity Fair story, “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him,” which ran in the magazine’s September issue. Though Morin never gained the pop culture notoriety of Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, he was suspected of more murders than either was convicted of.
As Miller’s story showcases, Palm, who ultimately escaped, maintained a relationship with her captor. In fact, after Morin’s arrest, he began calling, writing and even sending Palm Christmas cards from prison. In 1981, 19-year-old bright young boy Arne was prosecuted for murdering his landlord, Alan Bono. He was charged with committing murder in the first-degree, which, according to the law, translates into willfully killing someone with full intention. But Arne pleaded not guilty. And his defense was the first of its kind in the history of the United States—demonic possession. This is what the latest Netflix documentary, The Devil on Trial, is based upon. Sounds familiar, right? Yes, in case you are wondering, the popular film in the Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was indeed based on the same story. This time around, we get to see the real people who went through it. The real Arne, who is the focal point of the documentary, his wife, Debbie Glatzel, and her brother David, who also got possessed. The other family members of the Glatzel family also appear as narrators.

It might seem contradictory that the rise of short video clip popularity coincided with the popularity of long form journalism, but Netflix may be the common factor. The streaming network didn’t invent true crime documentation, but it helped shape the style, and keeps a vast repository of the hottest cold cases.
Real-life crime stories are riveting, whether the watcher is concerned about avoiding such events or solving them. There is something for every taste, from feature-length documentaries to full series. Not all crimes are equal under the laws of public opinion, but these are some of the most dangerously addictive true crime offerings currently available on Netflix.

Jana Monroe, former FBI agent and author of the upcoming memoir Hearts of Darkness: Serial Killers, The Behavioral Science Unit and My Life as a Woman in the FBI has signed with Rain.
Monroe was the inspiration and coach behind Jodie Foster’s Oscar-winning role as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. Throughout her career, she has consulted on more that 850 homicide cases, including serial killers Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ed Kemper and was the first and, at the time, only female agent in the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit at Quantico. She later became the first assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division.
In Hearts of Darkness, Monroe tells the story of her trailblazing life in shaping law enforcement and intelligence analysis. She explores the cases that have stayed with her, breaking down victimology, offering new insight into the minds of serial killers, and discussing...

Sometimes, when you’re looking to be entertained, only a thriller will cut it. If you ever find yourself feeling like life is getting inexplicably dark, and morality is becoming more ambiguous, immersing yourself in a tense world of serial killers, terrorists, and crooked sleazebags of all kinds is a pretty great form of escapism. The genre is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of tropes, so you could probably watch thrillers forever and never get bored.
Netflix’s thriller offerings are surprisingly well-rounded, offering a good mix of undisputed classics from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Greengrass as well as newer indie flicks that you may have missed. Whether you’re looking to revisit an old favorite, fill an embarrassing gap in your movie knowledge, or find something new and cutting-edge that will blow your mind, the genre always has something for you. “The Cable Guy is Not a horror movie,” you think to yourself while considering verbally punching me in the throat in the comments section below. You’re correct. But also, imagine this: If an unhinged, uber manipulative, obsessive, attention deprived stranger, with deep seeded mother abandonment issues, that you mistakenly let into your home and life began stalking you; turned your friends, family and girlfriend against you; had you arrested for crimes you didn’t commit; set up hidden cameras in your apartment; had you fired from your job; talked dirty to your mother; stalked and assaulted your ex’s new boyfriend in a men’s bathroom at a public restaurant and eventually kidnapped your ex with a stapler (exhale) all in the matter of a few days…
Wouldn’t that be… horrific?

Episode 2 of the new season of Black Mirror plays out almost like a found-footage horror in combination with a true crime documentary. It’s a little slow-paced, especially in comparison to episode 1, but still worth it. Definitely plays out a lot like Get Out, and we can’t help but make comparisons; still it’s a decent enough episode on its own though. Loch Henry takes us to a quaint town in Scotland as we meet film students who are excited to make their first documentary.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In Episode 2?
Davis is bringing Pia, his girlfriend from film school, to his hometown in Scotland for the first time. His mother Janet is very intrusive, and Davis asks her to stop, but she continues to be that way. Pia doesn’t seem to mind though as it would be normal for any parent to behave that way. They’re...

Gruesome tales of grisly murder. Horror stories of kids in cults. False confessions and authentic admissions.
True crime has taken over the documentary space, proving a reliable audience attractor for streaming platforms, network and cable channels. While it’s the most popular genre within nonfiction programming broadly speaking, whether that will translate to success with Emmy voters remains an open question. One thing’s for certain: there’s no lack of contenders — twisted tales dripping with blood.
Netflix leads the way with multiple suitors, among them Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, the grim story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, built largely around recorded interviews between Dahmer and one of his young defense attorneys in the early 1990s. It’s directed and executive produced by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, one of the leading figures in documentary.

The story, nay, the legend of Candy Montgomery is one that has become synonymous with Texas true crime. What seems like a case of jealous rage on the surface is more complex the deeper down the rabbit hole you go, so it's no surprise that Montgomery's tale has become the latest subject of the true-crime dramatization trend. Hulu's Jessica Biel vehicle "Candy" may have gotten the head start, but HBO Max's "Love & Death" (read /Film's review here) is aspiring to define the case through the eyes of Elizabeth Olsen.
So, how exactly did Olsen try and get into the mindset of an axe murderer? Well, according to the actor, she approached Candy Montgomery as an ordinary and otherwise complex human being. During a currently-archived SXSW Film & TV Festival live stream, Olsen explained that she decided to approach the fictionalized version of Montgomery with an open mind.

David Tennant took on one of his darkest roles to date when he played Dennis Nilsen – the notorious “Muswell Hill Murderer” who killed at least 12 young boys and men in North London from 1978 to 1983 – in ITV’s Des.
Tennant was the latest in a long line of actors to dramatise the lives of some of the world’s most prolific murderers – and it’s easy to see why such a part would be appealing. Playing a serial killer allows an actor to show their range and move away from being typecast. For those who’ve gone before them, such roles have been known to make a career, winning Oscars, Golden Globes and Baftas for those who take them on.

Elijah Wood may be having a bit of a moment with "Yellowjackets," but it's far from his only headline-grabbing role. Wood has been steadily working on our screens since the late 1980s, with a varied career that includes acting in TV and movies, doing voice work, producing and writing, and more.
While Wood definitely has become a permanent fixture in pop culture thanks to his role in "The Lord of the Rings," his career is much more eclectic and varied than just the blockbusters. He's the kind of actor who seems to delight in taking unusual and creative projects, with roles ranging from outright comedy and family-friendly hits to thrillers, dark dramas, and everything in between. Let's take a look back at some of his big-screen highlights over the years.

This post contains spoilers for the two-episode season 4 premiere of "Barry."
When "Barry" ended last season, it was with all the pitch-black drama of a series like "Breaking Bad" or "The Wire." The season finale featured a brutal, lengthy scene that saw Sally (Sarah Goldberg) beat a man to death after he tried to choke her, and a few scenes later, Barry (Bill Hader) was arrested in an LAPD sting orchestrated by the man he looks to as a hero. With Barry headed behind bars and his double life as an actor and assassin no longer hanging in the balance, one had to ask: how will this show ever be funny again?
The answer, it turns out, is by letting its comedy evolve alongside its subject matter. In its early seasons, "Barry" mined comedy from the desperation of Hollywood, cracking jokes about no-talent dreamers and washed-up B-listers. As Barry and...

Netflix’s Killer Sally three-part true crime series explores Sally McNeil’s side of her husband’s murder and the public’s perception of her during the trials. She claimed shooting her husband was in self-defense, and Ray McNeil had a history of violence and abuse toward her. Killer Sally dives into her defense team using “Battered Woman Syndrome” as a leading factor. But during that time and due to Sally’s image, the jury thought otherwise.

Sally was a Marine when she first met Ray McNeil, also a former Marine. Ray became interested in her when an acquaintance showed him a photo of her. At the time, Sally had developed a love for bodybuilding and competed. For Sally, it was “lust at first sight,” as Ray was also a bodybuilder.

To be a male serial killer of women one must be a misogynist. “Duh,” you’re probably saying, and yet we’re surrounded by sexy serial killer media, from Zac Efron as Ted Bundy to whatever Ryan Murphy is up to these days. It’s refreshing, then, that the historical crime drama “Boston Strangler” centers on a female journalist as she tracks that eponymous killer while avoiding glamorizing or sexualizing his actions.
Keira Knightley plays Loretta McLaughlin, a dogged journalist and mother of three who sees a way out of covering the lifestyle beat when she connects three similar murders. As she seeks justice for a growing tally of victims, her own womanhood is an inextricable part of the story.
The film begins in Ann Arbor, 1965, where a woman living alone is strangled to death. Her body is posed, nylon stockings tied around her neck in a sadistic, giftwrappy bow.

I am alone in the house. But I know she’s upstairs listening. If I keep the cartoons loud enough maybe she won’t hear me put on my Batman slippers. I shuffle softly to the door and pull it open just enough to squeeze through into the hall. There’s the front door. The bunch of keys on the mat where my mum posted them through the letterbox. Will I be able to find the right key in time? I look up and Jesmar is there, standing at the top of the stairs, with her patchwork playsuit, placid smile and straw-coloured fringe. The air is electric and I can hear a terrible moaning. I need to run but suddenly I’m swimming through concrete. Where is the key –
“Sir?” There is a light on my face. “Sir! Are you alright?” The air hostess is standing over me. The moaning is very loud now.

From Paranormal Activity to Grave Encounters, the most popular Found Footage movies tend to focus on supernatural horror. However, the sub-genre is capable of much more than that, with the believable thrills of the format becoming especially useful when telling stories about plausible terrors. After all, spooky media isn’t exclusive to fiction, with the True Crime genre offering up plenty of grounded scares without the need for literal ghosts and demons. That’s why I’d argue that the Dowdle Brothers’ controversial The Poughkeepsie Tapes is one of the most effective Found Footage flicks out there.
Not only is it a chilling addition to serial killer cinema, but it also serves as a rare example of a modern cult hit, with the Dowdles’ film becoming something of an urban legend due to the convoluted circumstances of its release. And with the film celebrating its 15th anniversary, I’d like...

Almost a decade into the true crime renaissance, appetites for fresh content – particularly of the white male serial-killer-next-door variety – remain insatiable. In December, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” became the second most-watched English-language show in Netflix history, while Ted Bundy, the subject of two new movies in 2021, is more or less his own subgenre.
The latest hit is “The Good Nurse,” which debuted on Netflix in November and recently picked up a Golden Globe nomination for star Eddie Redmayne. Directed by Tobias Lindholm, it follows Charles Cullen, who is serving 18 consecutive life sentences for killing as many as 40 New Jersey hospital patients and is suspected of killing hundreds more.
All the reasons why his story was destined to be made into a movie – the number of victims, his unusual methodology, the fact that he hid in plain sight for so long – were the same reasons Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne...

This post contains mild spoilers for "Babylon."
Damien Chazelle's "Babylon," an exciting, raunchy, expressionistic tale of debauchery in late '20s Hollywood, is currently — and quite unfortunately — bombing at the box office. This is a pity, as large-scale, R-rated Hollywood art epics are rare animals in the film marketplace of 2022, and audiences might find something striking and fun and even a little bit naughty at their local multiplex. "Babylon" tells the tale of three hopefuls, each trying to break into, or break back into, the film industry during its wild, lawless days. There is the film's Dickensian narrator Manuel (Diego Calva) who aims to work in a technical capacity. There is the ambitious would-be actress Nellie (Margot Robbie), a wild ball of madness who fights a snake. And, on the way down, is Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) a man whose career will definitely not recover from its current doldrums.

Teen drama One Tree Hill had a loyal fanbase, but one person who has no interest in revisiting the show is star Chad Michael Murray, who played main character Lucas Scott on the series, which aired on The WB and The CW between 2003 and 2012.
During a panel at Christmas Con, Chad Michael Murray discussed what has undoubtedly been his biggest success–although he doesn’t necessarily keep it too close to his heart. “It’s a section of my life that I deleted. A lot of development, a lot of growth as a human being, and just deleted so much of it.” Murray tried to break it down as best he could, saying, “I think we have hard drives, right? I’m probably like, you know when you get an iPhone that holds like 264 gigs: I’m down on a 32 gig phone because of old information, so booting everything up....
