Caroline Link’s wonderful, woefully obscure Best Foreign Film winner is an entertaining story of the perils of wartime emigration. It hits hard right now, with our own immigration crackdown underway. A Jewish family smartly escapes Nazi Germany at the 11th hour, only to find themselves imprisoned in detention camps by the British — who ironically consider them dangerous enemy aliens. The show is a glorious growing-up tale for a German tot transplanted to Kenya, and becomes an edgy romantic story when the mother repurposes her amorous needs to help rescue her family.

Frankfurt, Germany -- Tom Tykwer has secured a further €500,000 ($747,000) in financing from the German Federal Film Board (Ffa) for his film "Drei" (Three), currently shooting in Berlin.
"Drei" will be Tykwer's first German-language project since "The Princess and the Warrior" (2000).
The threesome drama centers on a fortysomething couple in Berlin who separately fall in love with the same man. It stars Devid Striesow ("The Counterfeiters"), Sophie Rois ("Learning to Lie") and Sebastian Schipper, who has had supporting roles in Tykwer's "The Princess and the Warrior," "Run, Lola, Run" and "Winter Sleepers."
Tykwer's longtime business partner Stefan Arndt is producing through their Berlin-based X Filme shingle. Shooting is set to wrap in November for a late summer 2010 release through X Filme's distribution arm X Verleih.

Cologne, Germany -- Like a middle-aged rocker going out for one more glory ride, Constantin Film is taking another go at its hit Werner franchise, revving up the animated series about a booze-fueled biker for a fifth film.
Based on Rotger Feldmann's cult comics, the first four entries in the "Werner" series have sold more than 13.6 million tickets in Germany, making it one of the most successful local franchises of all time. But while the first two Werner films -- in 1990 and 1996 -- were massive hits, selling nearly 5 million tickets each, the law of diminishing returns quickly kicked in. "Werner 3" (1999) sold around 2.8 million admissions and "Werner 4" (2003) just over a million.
The fifth film, titled "Werner -- Eiskalt!" (Werner -- Ice Cold), will be a mix of animated and real-life sequences and will mix fact and fiction with Feldmann playing himself as a passionate biker and comic book writer. Feldmann will...

Cologne, Germany -- He's had a rough ride from critics but German comedian Mario Barth got the last laugh this weekend when his film debut "Mannersache" (Man's Business) triumphed at the boxoffice.
The comedy, directed by Gernot Roll and featuring Barth's phenomenally successful brand of gender gap humor, sold 703,000 tickets in its opening weekend for a bow of About $6 million.
It was the second-best start of the year in Germany, after "Twilight," and the best bow for a German production so far in 2009. And since "Twilight" was able to goose its German figures with substantial previews ahead of its first weekend, Barth can claim the best four-day bow (Thursday-Sunday) in Germany this year.
Coming in a distant second was Oscar champion "Slumdog Millionaire," which drew an audience of 210,000 in Germany in its opening weekend. But "Slumdog," which bowed on just 190 screens, compared with 630 for "Mannersache," still had the best per-theater average,...

MUNICH -- Actresses shut out their male colleagues to take both acting awards at this year's Munich International Film Festival. In a surprise decision, the three-man jury of cameraman Gernot Roll (Nowhere in Africa), producer Uli Putz (Beyond Silence) and actor Ulrich Noethen (Downfall) chose two women for the Foerderpries Deutscher Film, Munich's top acting award, instead of awarding one of the prizes to a male performer. Joerdis Triebel won for her performance in Emmas Glueck (Emma's Luck), a drama from director Sven Taddicken, while the second award went to Rosalie Thomass for her starring role in an episode of German police series Polizeiruf 110.
