Before “Succession” set Emmy Awards records for its fourth and final season, it had a much more humble start. Its first season earned only five nominations, including three above-the-line bids for Drama Series, Directing, and Writing; it took home one for Jesse Armstrong’s season finale script. The Gilded Age has woven the story of Black New Yorkers into the larger fabric of its depiction of 1880’s society. Season 2 expands on this foundation by also showing a slice of what life was like in the South during the same period.
Peggy (Denée Benton) is very eager to cover the most important stories of the day for T. Thomas Fortune’s (Sullivan Jones) newspaper. Covering the Red Cross’s relief work last season has also whet her appetite for traveling beyond the city. During season 2 the opportunity to cover a big and meaningful story presents itself when Booker T. Washington offers Peggy and Fortune the opportunity to cover the opening of a new dormitory at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
The Tuskegee Institute, now called Tuskegee University, was founded in 1881 just two years before the main plot of the series begins.

Season two continues the ensemble format established in season one by centering the storylines of the Van Rhijins and Russells plus the stories of their respective household members. Peggy Scott’s plotline takes a deeper look into African-American society beyond the city. There’s also a new cast of guest stars and supporting characters creating tension for our established characters.
Season one left off with George Russell (Morgan Spector) successfully avoiding financial ruin because of the railroad accident. This season, George’s employees are growing frustrated with working long hours in the steel mills while George is concerned that the possibilities of strikes and boycotts will cost him his own livelihood and those who depend on his railroad company for theirs.

For those of us who can't get enough lavish period dramas about privileged high society folk and their servants, look no further -- The Gilded Age has everything you could want.
On The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 1, we are treated to a movie-length (80 minutes!) premiere introducing us to the many characters, relationships, and plotlines that will define the season.
Julian Fellowes struck gold with the wildly popular Downton Abbey, and The Gilded Age is arguably even better.
The Gilded Age does not disappoint in terms of spectacle. Bob Shaw's production design and Regina Graves' set decoration are flawless. Kasia Walicka-Maimone's costumes are works of art. It's all very decadent.
Not only are the production aspects magnificent, but the cast is superb as well.
A treasure trove of talents, the cast is made up largely of experienced performers from Broadway and the West End. Any theatre aficionados (myself included...

An aura of economic growth and wealth permeates the new drama “The Gilded Age,” premiering Jan. 24 on HBO. Christine Baranski is Agnes van Rhijn, a socialite living in early-1880s New York City with her sister, Ada Brook, played by Cynthia Nixon. The sisters represent the old money of New York’s aristocracy as it was beginning to be challenged by new people and modern ideas.
While production designer Bob Shaw needed to reflect the opulence of their home, he also wanted to give it a “lived-in” feeling. That meant hanging picture frames one on top of another and using pattern on pattern — on the wallpaper, the curtains and the chairs. He tried not to go overboard. “We had to convey that style without making contemporary eyes bleed,” Shaw says. The layering is what “gave that sense that they had lived there for 20 years.”

“The Many Saints of Newark” is a prequel to the beloved HBO series “The Sopranos,” but it unfolds in a much different sliver of New Jersey. This film is set in the apartment buildings and tenements of 1960s and ’70s Newark instead of the sprawling McMansions where Tony and much of his crew decamped on the show.

Netflix’s “The Irishman” struck out at the Oscars on Sunday night, despite its 10 nominations.
Martin Scorsese’s sprawling three-and-a-half-hour look at a gangster’s life received 10 Academy Award nominations on Jan. 13 and came away empty-handed.
“The Irishman” has now joined five titles that amount to the Oscar snubs hall of fame that hit double figures in nominations, but wound up with nothing at the awards ceremonies. That roster is led by Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple” and Herbert Ross’ “The Turning Point,” which both received 11 nominations. “The Irishman” now joins three other films — Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York,” the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” and David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” — with 10 nominations and no wins.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

Bob Shaw has scored his first Oscar nomination, as production designer for “The Irishman.” The film looks at U.S. history through the eyes mafia hitman Frank Sheeran and his relationship with Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa. The epic entailed 108 shooting days, with several locations each day.

I decided at age 16 that I wanted to design scenery; I was thinking theater. I designed “The Mandrake” at the Public Theatre when I was 20, then at 23, I designed “The Pirates of Penzance” with Linda Ronstadt on Broadway, working with a really wonderful director named Wilford Leach.

We built 28 sets and had 295 sets in all. Our locations were all over the place. There were a lot of locations that are only seen for a few moments.

In the last 20 years, only three Best Picture winners have also won the Oscar for Best Production Design or Art Direction. Yet there’s a very good chance that it will happen again this year. It’s a strong season for period production design Oscar contenders, with Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, Word War I thriller, “1917,” as the frontrunner. It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. Kicking things off was “In the Absence” by Yi Seung-jun and Gary Byung-seok Kam, a documentary on the tragic sinking of Mv Sewol ferry in 2014, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

Renee Zellweger is favored to land her fourth Oscar nod, this time for her turn as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy.” Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) are the odds-on favorites among lead actors.

With the shortened awards timeline, ceremonies hit hard and fast. Sunday night marks the 25th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, airing on The CW beginning at 7pm Est/7pm Pst. Taye Diggs returns as host the proceedings, which take place in the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. On the film side, this year’s nominations are led by Netflix’s “The Irishman,” with 14 nods. However, Martin Scorsese’s film came home empty-handed at the Golden Globes last Sunday. Production designer Bob Shaw knew the territory when he signed on to do Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” Not only had he worked with Scorsese on “The Wolf of Wall Street” and helped design the iconic organized-crime series “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” he was from South Philadelphia, the main setting in “The Irishman.” He even had relatives (his grandmother’s brothers) who owned a lingerie shop that didn’t actually sell lingerie. “Apparently, they were bookies,” he said.
