For me, what little knowledge I had over the years about the Pearl harbor attack in World War II that dragged the United States into the conflict, that had been a bit of a European conflict up until this event, was probably from watching a Michael Bay blockbuster from the early noughties which passed me by, and seemingly everyone else by!
I was surprised at just how this 1970 film stood up in a pre-CGI era of real effects and miniatures. The action is delivered in a semi-documentary style with key characters positions popping up on screen just before their dialogue, such as Chief-Of-Staff etc.
It appears that this film got a mixed-review from the critic fraternity upon release. One can only assume from the lack of character development beyond the black and white of what really happened! That is what is so good about this film. Its authenticity to real historical events that so many other War films tend to brushstroke with bits added on or told, how can I say it diplomatically, historical inaccuracies?
The film is directed by American and Japanese directors for a realistic take on events from both angles of the conflict. I have been highly praising of World War films I have seen that give the German angle such as the All Quiet On The Western Front films and Das Boot (1981).
