He wasn’t the first and certainly will not be the last to launch big at Sundance with a directorial debut and then take a bit more time to navigate his way through a sophomore feature — a narrative that Cutter Hodierne would put together while the iron was hot. Following Fishing Without Nets, Hodierne now moves into the murky world of crypto. Anchored by a script penned by John Hibey (a participant in the 2023 Sundance Screenwriting Lab), Hodierne not only directs but also produces alongside Vanishing Angle’s Benjamin Wiessner (known for Werewolves Within) and Hibey. Cold Wallet, a heist thriller, exudes a vibe that seamlessly oscillates between a comedy noir, overt slapstick and the intricate layers of the criminal underworld.…...

Los Angeles, CA – Publisher Tokyopop announced the forthcoming launch on December 14th of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, an original new boys’ love manga inspired by the Netflix anime series featuring alter egos of characters from the hit Ubisoft video games in a highly referential homage to the early 90s.
The Netflix series follows Dolph Laserhawk, a rebel super-soldier who escaped the army and planning a final big heist with Alex Taylor before they sail into the sunset. The show was created by Adi Shankar (producer of Netflix’s Castlevania series) and is currently streaming.
“I’m so thankful to Adi, Ubisoft, and Tokyopop for letting me play in this wonderful sandbox that they’ve created,” says Ben Kahn. “I can’t wait for fans to see how Dolph Laserhawk’s doomed romance began, and how it irrevocably set him on his current path.”

The collectible makers at Funko have created a large line of Pop figures based on Hocus Pocus 2. There are, of course, all three Sanderson sisters, but also the new characters Cassie, Becca, Izzy, and Gilbert. Surprisingly, a new Billy Butcherson figure isn’t in the line-up. But there is The Witch Mother – and while the other Hocus Pocus 2 POPs will be available wherever POPs are sold, the Witch Mother figure will only be available through the Funko website. So if you want to get your hands on this one, head over to Funko.com before all the Witch Mother figures are sold!
ThatHashtagShow informs, “The Witch Mother plays a brief but significant role in the Disney feature Hocus Pocus 2. The character, portrayed by Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, meets the Sanderson sisters when they’re still children. Sensing witchy potential in young Winifred, the Witch Mother gives the sisters their iconic spellbook.

While many fans are still waiting to see Lucasfilm develop live-action projects set during The Old Republic that explores things like the Sith Empire (long before the Rule of Two) and origins of the Jedi Order, there was a bit of a compromise with the publishing side creating The High Republic setting. From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.

I don’t know if anything is more soothing than Owen Wilson smiling while sporting a mighty blonde afro. With light twinkling in his eyes, Wilson stares into the distance, surrounded by happy little trees for IFC Films‘ new Paint poster. It’s moments like this when I’m thankful Wilson is experiencing a resurgence in cinema. Between starring in Marvel’s Loki and Disney’s Haunted Mansion and becoming powered up for the underrated Secret Headquarters family film, Wilson is in a good place.
Paint stars Owen Wilson as Vermont’s #1 public television painter, Carl Nargle, for Brit McAdams’ latest project, and Bob Ross fans are salivating.

David Cronenberg‘s 1988 film Dead Ringers (get it Here) was seared into Oscar winner (for her role in The Constant Gardener) Rachel Weisz’s memory from the moment she first saw the film, as she found it to be “deeply psychological, deeply twisted, perverse and thrilling”. So when Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures asked Weisz if there were any projects she was keen to make, Weisz brought up the idea of a TV series version of Dead Ringers where she would play the twin lead characters. The project started moving forward in that moment, and Alice Birch – whose credits include Lady Macbeth, The Wonder, Normal People, and Conversations With Friends – was soon brought on board to write (along with an all-women writing team), serve as showrunner, and executive produce the series with Weisz and Ellison. We’ll get to see the result of their collaboration when this six-episode version of...

Morgan Creek Entertainment is bringing David Cronenberg‘s Dead Ringers to the small screen, with Rachel Weisz starring in and exec producing the adaptation. Bloody Disgusting has learned this morning that the limited series will be hitting Prime Video on April 21.
While you wait for a trailer, check out several first-look images below.
Billed as “a reimagining with a gender swap,” the project was given straight-to-series order by Amazon. It comes from Weisz, Alice Birch, Annapurna Television and Morgan Creek.

As was first announced by Variety, "She-Hulk" and "Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany is joining "Scream" and "Yellowjackets" star Jasmin Savoy Brown in a new sci-fi horror film from "Werewolves Within" and "Scare Me" director, Josh Ruben. The project is called "Green Bank," and both performers are slated to have leading roles. "In a marketplace where original, horror-thrillers slay at the box office, we need no further proof that audiences want to have fun at the movies again," Ruben told Variety. "That's the magic word. Fun. Horror is the bulletproof genre, and 'Green Bank' has the full package — it's smart, scary, and wickedly funny."
Protagonist Pictures CEO Dave Bishop also gave a statement to Variety, having said, "Josh has envisioned a perfectly paced roller coaster of a horror that expertly delivers on its promise to jolt, thrill, and terrify audiences, all while keeping them grinning from ear to ear." He...

HBO’s live-action seriesThe Last of Us has set a new record with its Rotten Tomatoes score.
The show, which premieres in the US on Sunday 15 January and on Monday 16 January on Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name.
Ahead of its debut, The Last of Us has been lavished with praise by many reviewers – including The Independent’s chief TV critic Nick Hilton.
On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently boasts a glowing “fresh” score of 97 per cent positive reviews.
The score is especially noteworthy given the tepid reception video game adaptations usually receive. Several – such as 1993’s Super Mario Bros or 2003’s Alone in the Dark – have been cited as ranking among the worst films ever made.

Believe it or not, horror-based musicals are a rarity. Sure, there's "Frankenstein - A New Musical," "Little Shop of Horrors," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," and "Dracula, the Musical," among a few others. But in the scope of musical theater history, those are mere blips on the radar. Considering original horror movies have raked in hundreds of millions of dollars over the last year alone, horror musicals should be a no-brainer. There is a treasure trove of stories that could easily make the transition from film to the stage. Of course, you'd have to make a few tweaks in the storytelling here and there, pare down the locations to a handful, and hire a strong practical makeup effects department. Let's face it, these days, you've gotta have the blood!
Flipping through the decades, '80s and '90s horror has an inherent theatricality to it, owed largely to Gialli and slasher influence.

One of the finest horror scores of 2022 was from a composer who's not a fan of the genre. Anna Drubich doesn't watch horror movies, but over the last few years, she's scored the hell out of several of them, including "Barbarian." Without obvious homages or references, Drubich composed an often subtle, hair-raising score that went low where the genre tends to go loud.
Over the last few years, Drubich has scored several horror gems: "Werewolves Within," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and "Fear Street: 1666." Outside of her genre work, she's scored a long list of films and shows in which people aren't running and screaming from monsters. The composer, who studied at the Moscow Chopin Music College and the Munich School for the Performing Arts, scores an array of projects in Germany, Russia, and the United States. Recently, Drubich took the time to discuss her career and how...

Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) provides the voice of popular cartoon character Velma Dinkley in the upcoming HBO Max series Velma, an animated show that’s intended for adult viewers. The ten episodes of Velma‘s first season are going to be released two at a time over the course of five weeks, beginning on January 12th – and with that date just a few days away, HBO Max has unveiled a poster for the show! You can take a look at that at the bottom of this article.
Developed by Charlie Grandy, Velma will tell the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. An original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.

Rian Johnson's new film "Glass Onion," a sequel to his 2019 comedic murder mystery "Knives Out," boasts, like its predecessor, a massively impressive cast. While the first featured the likes of Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, and Don Johnson, the sequel contains Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Leslie Odom, Jr. "Glass Onion," not to be outdone, also features notable cameos from Hugh Grant, Jake Tapper, Serena Williams, and Yo-Yo Ma. In a very amusing scene, the film's central detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) shares a video call with Stephen Sondheim, Natasha Lyonne, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Angela Lansbury, all playing themselves.
Since the filming of "Glass Onion," both Lansbury and Sondheim passed away, at 96 and 91 respectively. That they were willing to appear in Johnson's film is a testament to their gameness, and perhaps to Johnson's charm as a filmmaker.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. So, naturally, we’re theming this week’s streaming horror picks around it. There’s something about horror movies set in winter that makes for an added layer of dread. The dreary, sunless skies could be a factor in establishing a grim mood.
But it probably has more to do with the harsh winter weather escalating the threat level and reducing survival odds. These five titles bring the chills in more ways than one and are off the beaten path a bit. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
For this––our last episode of 2022––we bring on the extremely talented filmmaker Josh Ruben to discuss the legendary Sam Raimi. We primarily focus on some of Raimi’s earlier B-Sides: namely Crimewave (currently streaming on Tubi), The Quick and the Dead, and For Love of the Game.
Ruben himself stars in the new film A Wounded Fawn, now streaming on Shudder. This is a brutal, gnarly, allegorical piece of horror that earns a solid recommendation from The B-Side. Seek it out and enjoy! Ruben has also directed two top-notch features: Scare Me and Werewolves Within.

We are in a golden age of video game adaptations. What used to be a much-maligned endeavor, an almost-cursed undertaking, is now a well of possibilities that can produce some stunning works of film and television. Whether it's "Werewolves Within" and "Sonic the Hedgehog," or the stunning, award-winning "Arcane" and the unabashed fun of "Players," never has there been as much reason to get excited for a video game adaptation as there is now — and things are just getting started.
Arguably the most anticipated video game adaptation coming out in 2023 is "The Last of Us" TV series from Craig Mazin and the original game's creator, Neil Druckmann. The game is already rather cinematic and has great visuals, and one could wonder why exactly we needed a live-action adaptation. But Mazin's work with the near-apocalyptic drama "Chernobyl" and this show's stellar cast are enough to keep us intrigued -- and...

Shudder has developed a knack for being one of the most well-curated streaming services out there. For as much as other services like Netflix or HBO Max have much more to offer in terms of quantity, to the subscriber, those offerings can feel like a ton of fluff. With Shudder, it is a more targeted, "less is more" approach. But that's not to say they don't have a little something for everyone. Case in point, within a small window of time, they can release a sweet vampire comedy like "Blood Relatives," then turn right around and release one of the weirdest movies of the year with "A Wounded Fawn," which just made its debut on the service.
Hailing from director Travis Stevens ("Jakob's Wife"), "A Wounded Fawn" follows the story of Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind), a local museum curator who is dipping her toe back into the dating pool, only...

Shudder just dropped a December treat in the form of Travis Stevens' new surrealist cat-and-mouse horror film "A Wounded Fawn," starring Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben. After a successful run as a producer on genre documentaries such as "Jodorowsky's Dune" and memorable features like "Cheap Thrills" and "We Are Still Here," Stevens moved into the director's chair with the housebound thriller "Girl on the Third Floor" and the delightful vampire comedy "Jakob's Wife." For multiple reasons, "A Wounded Fawn" may be the most personal film Stevens has made to date, showcasing his passion for subversive art and mythology inside a classically structured story updated for modern horror audiences. Using the ancient Greek female archetypes of the Furies as a jumping-off point, "A Wounded Fawn" follows a sheltered museum curator (Lind) who finds her inner strength after doing battle with a charming art collector (Ruben) who turns out to be a serial killer.

The holiday season is now upon us, and it seems only right that we’re heading into December with a brand new Christmas-themed genre movie arriving in theaters later this week.

In the case of "I'm Totally Fine," the "What We Do in the Shadows" star makes every second count in a role that amounts to maybe five minute of screen-time. Guillén plays a passionate DJ who has good tunes and molly and really wants to throw a set for two (Jillian Bell and Natalie Morales).
Guillén brings a lot of levity to the film, which deals with the loss of a friend. Over the years, the actor has by all accounts been killing it on FX's "What We Do in the Shadows." He also starred in the best movie adaptation of a video game there is, "Werewolves Within." Guillén is now a reliably joyful presence in comedy, and as he told us in a recent interview,...

After being in development hell for nearly a decade, The Last of Us will finally premiere in 2023. The series is created by Craig Mazin, who crafted the excellent Chernobyl series on HBO. Interestingly enough, the casting is filled with notable Game of Thrones alums, as Pedro Pascal – who will play Joel – and Bella Ramsay – who will play Ellie – will lead the upcoming video game adaptation. Now, video game adaptations have gotten better over recent years, with The Witcher, Sonic The Hedgehog, Werewolves Within, and Arcane, showcasing that it’s possible to make a great crossover of

It seems that high profile werewolf movies are in short supply these days, doesn’t it? When you’re talking horror movies, there’s plenty of zombies to be had, vampires aren’t going anywhere, and slasher films will always come back into fashion.
But werewolves? They’re not so lucky. Maybe it’s because they seem to require a little more of a budget, and some proper special effects wizardry to make those transformations really pop. CGI werewolves just won’t cut it. And then there’s always the question of just how different you can really make any given werewolf story from the classics of yore. Marvel’s Werewolf by Night just did something really cool, but that’s a TV special and not really a feature film.
There have been a few signs of furry life recently, with fare like Wolfcop, Late Phases, and Werewolves Within starting...

Just about 30 years after the release of Hocus Pocus, the beloved Halloween classic has finally spawned a sequel with Hocus Pocus 2, and it looks to be a huge success for Disney+.
Hocus Pocus 2, which premiered Only on Disney+ this past Friday, has become the #1 film premiere on Disney+ to date, the streaming equivalent to topping the box office charts.
This statistic is based on “hours watched domestically in the first 3 days,” Disney+ notes.
Clearly, audiences across the United States were hungry to see the return of the Sanderson Sisters, with Hocus Pocus 2 making for one of this Halloween season’s first big events. For years those who never found much to love about the original movie have been wondering how big the fanbase really is, and it would seem we now a definitive answer to that question.
Yes, haters. People actually do love Hocus Pocus. And we love it too.

Hollywood has been trying to bring video games to the big screen since the mid-'90s and, admittedly, the results have been mixed. Sure, we've had franchises like "Resident Evil" pretty consistently do well at the box office, but what's been missing for most of that time is honest-to-God critical acclaim. But the tide has been turning in recent years with movies like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu." However, the tide turned dramatically in terms of acclaim in 2021 with the release of "Werewolves Within."
Based on the Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment Oculus game of the same name, director Josh Ruben's low-budget werewolf flick currently boasts a stellar 86 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it far and away the best-reviewed video game movie ever. So, how did Ruben do what nobody else could with a mere 6.5 million budget? I had the chance to speak with Ruben recently...
